About the Author Gloria Englund, founder of Recovering u, breaks new ground in the field of addiction recovery and support. As an ally of the recovery community, she honors all pathways of recovery. She is a psychotherapist who holds a Master of Arts degree in Human Development. Families Can Learn from One Mother’s Story By Steve What a powerful book full of information very helpful to others who are Living in the Wake of Addiction. The author dedicated her book to all who are living with a loved one’s addiction—and who are yearning for support and knowledge. She provides both, focusing on a mother’s love as well as her determination to help others now experiencing what her family did. I especially appreciated her chapter on “Myths” about addiction. Much has changed relative to the insurance designation of addiction as a “substance use disorder” since the author’s 33-year-old son died in 2007, which means more people who are addicted can get help. This is what’s really alarming. The use of heroine has become epidemic based on its demand by a new market: white suburban youth, and white women. These people started with opiates/pain killers, and when the prescription bottle was empty, they felt like they still needed “something” to make them feel the same. Sadly, they are now addicted to heroine as a replacement for pain meds. None of us knows what tomorrow brings for one of our loved ones. With the strong legacy and stigma of shame connected to being addicted to something—drugs, alcohol, gambling or sex—it can be hard to seek help and admit your family has a big problem. The author’s story is told from a mother’s heart, and her “pulled-out” lessons learned from being another “unwilling expert” are clear and directed to help families like hers.

Living in the Wake of Addiction presents a strong challenge to this undeserved stigma. Beyond the engrossing and drama-filled narrative, there is something new here. Gloria Englund provides guidance for how we can become bridges, rather than obstacles, to our loved one’s recovery. I applaud Gloria for creating this balanced and pioneering work. Hers is a voice of reason, and a voice of hope. She is dedicated to paving the way for a cure, while providing wisdom and encouragement for the long journey toward that goal.This book is an easy read. It's well-written, has a gripping story line and has practical, down-to-earth advice about what to do and what not to do when you love someone suffering from the disease of addiction. It's a resource I'll turn to whenever I need to give some words of wisdom to someone struggling with a loved ones' addiction. For example, just today, I received a phone call from a friend whose brother is an addict. They live together in their father's home. My friend didn't know where to turn in order to make some sound decisions about what to do about his own life, and how to best care for his ill brother and his erratic behavior, as they face the quick and steep decline of their father's health who has served as their mediator.
