On Dee Branch’s first date with Johnnie Oliver, a fourth-generation funeral director, she knew she was in for a unique relationship when he had to leave “for just a minute”—and he came back to the car with a corpse.

Over twenty years later, Dee was still in love with her charming southern gentleman when he passed away suddenly in 2007. Determined to carry on Johnnie’s work, Dee earned her mortuary science degree, only to find herself no longer needed in the family business. So Dee crossed the racial divide in the most segregated industry in America and joined the staff of an African-American funeral home as a single white woman.

In The Undertaker’s Wife, Oliver draws from her wealth of experience to provide candid and often hysterically funny advice on dying well and surviving the loss of those who have gone before. Her insights on the common ground of grief, survival, and the ever-present faithfulness of God (to all of us, regardless of our race, religious upbringing, or socio-economic background) will help readers prepare for one of life’s only certainties—and do it with wisdom, grace, and a healthy dose of joy.

This is a heartfelt account of one woman's journey through life, love, marriage and death (on many levels.)If you want a good laugh (as in belly laugh where you have tears streaming down your face) this is the book to do it. Granted, the entire book is not that way, there are many different emotional reactions caused by this memoir, but laughter is certainly one of them. Most of the time I don't read memoirs with any gusto, but I finished this book in a single afternoon. The author is so honest about her feelings and I felt a kinship with her early on in her writing. This is a book that you won't forget once you have read it. I am not particularly religious, and there is a lot of talk about God in this book, but it is not the in your face sort of preaching that many books present. Instead, you will find the beliefs of this woman and those she came into contact with during the course of her life clearly stated, but she never tells the reader what to believe.I have the utmost respect for Dee and her ability to not only roll with the changes in her life but to improve it every step of the way. She also offers some great advice.I definitely recommend this book. This review is based on a complimentary copy from the publisher and provided through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

The humor spills off the pages in tummy aching doses, enabling the reader appreciate the sad moments of loss. I love the simplicity of Dee' s relationship with the Lord, and how real she is in her questioning and assumptions about God. This book put a smile on my face from page one to the end, with an evenly spread sprinkling of tears which made it a 5-star read...not to mention the most useful advice for everyone destined to die eventually!

Their stories are some of my favorites. Just like the author, Dee Oliver, describes on her first date, my friend has had to be a part of a few "detours" with her husband while a "third wheel" joined them in the back of their van. So I was excited to read some more stories from an undertaker's wife. This book shares the true story of Oliver's first dates with her husband, a fourth generation funeral director, as well as his sudden death which left her with their three girls to raise. She then shares her journey into becoming a certified funeral director. This book, while entertaining, wasn't super captivating for me. There are bits of humor, some of which is redundant, and glimmers here and there of her faith. The story is interesting, but I found myself having a hard time relating to her wealthy, Southern lifestyle: she mentions being in Garden Club, and the Country Club, and her decorator, and lawn guy, and botox. Actually, she mentions botox A LOT. Which just felt strange to me.I did appreciate the vulnerability she shared, and I liked that the last few chapters were more "how-to" than story. She shared what was helpful to her in her early widow days. And she shared what spouses should do to prepare for their death, because we never know when it will happen and the even the smallest preparations-- like having your obituary already written-- can help your grieving family tremendously.I finished this book wanting it to contain a little more depth, but it was a unique story none the less.I was provided a copy of this book from the publisher, but all opinions are my own.
