About the Author James Kugel: Starr Professor of Hebrew Literature at Harvard University (1982 to 2003), Kugel was Professor of Bible at Bar Ilan University in Israel, where he also served as chairman of the Department of Bible. A specialist in the Hebrew Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls, Kugel is the author of more than seventy research articles and thirteen books, including The Idea of Biblical Poetry, On Being a Jew, The Bible As It Was, How to Read the Bible (National Jewish Book Award for best book, 2007), and In the Valley of the Shadow. Merriman For this Christian reader, there is a good bit of terminology used by Orthodox Jews that was unfamiliar, but the included glossary helps. That said, I found the book to be a fascinating take on a problem that confronts Christians as well as Jews - what are we to make of the Bible in these modern and post modern times? Kugel takes text criticism as a given, as anyone who has read his "How to Read the Bible" would expect, and is supremely uninterested in refuting any of it. The point of that earlier work- that older interpreters had a methodology appropriate to analyzing the Bible as Scripture as opposed to treating it as just another ancient text to be subjected to skeptical academic criticism- is made here but on a more personal and emotional level. I have read other works by Kugel and hope his health allows him to write many more. After I purchased this book, Amazon kindly recommended others, most of which I had either read or was familiar with. All of those shared one thing in common- they fail to escape the tyranny of the historical critical method. Kugel does.

He's one of the top biblical scholars in the world, but makes everything very accessible to the lay reader through this format. A lot to think about as Passover approaches.

About the Author Alan M. Hallene Jr., PhD. is the father of three grown sons, one whom he anticipates reuniting with someday in heaven. I hadn’t intended to read it all in one sitting, but couldn’t stop myself. The author’s voice is sincere and compelling as he relives the shock of discovering his son’s body following suicide. The raw pain he shares awoke the grief I’d experienced in losing loved ones years earlier. God reached out to this broken parent during his darkest moments and offered him hope and assurance in deeply personal ways—ways that fit his specific needs perfectly. The very knowledge of God’s caring enough to reach out not once, but eight times in just a few minutes will to carry this man through life until his relationship with his son can be restored in heaven.Reading Allen Hallene’s retelling of God’s tenderness brought to mind not only my own losses, but magnified the ways our Lord softened death’s blow for me as I grieved. What a gift to be able to look back and remember things in that light. Without his insight I might never have gained that perspective.Writings centered on suicide are never easy, but Hallene and Marshall have produced a book that turns it on its head— uplifting and hope-filled. It will help ease the heartache of anyone grieving because it focuses not on death itself, but on heaven. This book belongs on everyone’s bookcase as a reminder of God’s loving presence in our time of need.

DiFalco The Hope of Heaven (God's Eight Messages of Assurance to A Grieving Father) by Alan M. Hallene Jr. is a confirmation that God still speaks to us today even in our darkest hour. The author of this true story is brave to share every detail of his son's suicide in order to reach others and spare such a tragedy from occuring to them. Heart wrenching but uplifting, this book is bittersweet and has many powerful messages. At times it is raw and hard to read making the message more remarkable as we realize the pain the Hallene family had to endure in order to recall and share it. I was honored to review this book for the BookLook community in exchange for my views. This book is an excellent resource not only for those who lost loved ones but also is instrumental for those facing depression. All christains would benefit by reading.

Fortunately I have not had to experience any suicide in my life but I have had people close to me make attempts and though I am forever grateful that they didn't succeed I have always been told that if you take your own life you don't go to heaven. This book really made me see death in a different light. Suicide or not this father experienced what I'm sure had to be the most horrific pain in his life and yet he was able to feel some peace. This book not only helped me think more about death and the what happens after but also about being a better Christian and how our faith really does help us in every aspect of our lives. I want to thank the author for sharing his story with us. You and your family will continue to be in my prayers. Christy

A book for student to aid in their calling to missions By Chris Land There are many conferences that happen all over the world and especially hear in the United States. Some conferences happen yearly and every other year. We have Passion, Desiring God, Together for the Gospel, and The Gospel Coalition. Some of these conferences will have a certain theme to them but what one conference that was focused on students. Some of you would say, "Isn't what the Passion conference does?" I am talking about one that focuses on students whose hearts are for the nations. Those who desire to do missions.In December 2013, thousands of student gathered together to be mobilized for missions. To go in places where it is dangerous. To places where it is remote and people don't know who Jesus is. This conference featuring John Piper, Conrad Mbewe, Ricahrd Chin, Mack Stiles, Matt Chandler, Michael Oh, David Platt, Thabiti Anyabwile, Kevin DeYoung, and D.A. Carson is called CROSS, which also happens to be the title of this book.Each chapter is a general session each preacher did during CROSS. Piper addressed the chief end of missions which is the supremacy of God in the joy of all people. DeYoung's chapter was on the five surprising motivations for mission where he addressed the doctrines of grace also known as T.U.L.I.P. which are the five points of Calvinism. I love Mack Stiles' chapter where he expressed if you are called to be a missionary, you must be inspired by the gospel. It does no good for a missionary to go over seas and not love the gospel as they serve the people.One thing this book addresses is that not all Christians are called to be missionaries. Some are called to go while some are called to stay. David Platt addressed that in the conclusion of this book. What is most important is your obedience to God on whether or not you should be in the mission field. When I was in college, I heard a lot about missions. I kept thinking if God wanted me to go. I felt the speakers who I heard kept making me feel guilty that I am not a missionary. Praise be to God, this book did not give that impression and I hope those who heard these messages felt the same.This is great book to give to a student considering missions. I think youth pastors will benefit from it too as well as those in college ministry to equip their people.

Vanegas I am always looking for ways to motivate people, especially the students I teach at an undergraduate level. I have to confess that, despite all my years of teaching, and the countless anecdotal examples I have encountered on motivation (and demotivation) among students from diverse disciplines in the course I teach, I have not been successful in fully understanding motivation. I recently received a free review copy of this book, and I read it from start to finish as soon as I opened it, as it captured my interest immediately. After reading it, I feel that I now have a framework, which offers both enough structure and ample flexibility, for possible approaches I could use to design high impact learning experiences that motivate students (and also myself). I found the book well structured, with a clear flow of ideas, enjoyable to read, and full of opportunities for pause and reflection. For anyone involved in creative activities, in my opinion, this is a book worth exploring.

Food for the creative soul By Marial Shea I was on the bus reading Motivation for Creative People when I felt a tap on my shoulder. “Excuse me,” said the lady in the seat behind, “but what’s that on your Kindle? I’ve been reading over your shoulder, and it looks so interesting.”I gave her the name of Mark’s book and recommended it enthusiastically. I told her I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of this book.I’ve read a LOT of other books on creativity and motivation, so I’m a tough sell. Mark’s book was a pleasant surprise, both for its new ideas and for his fresh synthesis of those basic concepts I thought I already knew. If you’re new to the subject, I think this would be an excellent introduction; but if you’ve been around, you’ll still find lots of meaty ideas to chew on.Best of all, Mark delivers consistently useful insights and suggestions with the promise that “all the solutions offered in the book have been tested with real people facing real challenges.” The tone of the book is congenial and compassionate, even when he’s kicking butt. I felt like I was sitting down with a caring friend. And he illustrates every concept with a story, either from his own creative practice or from public figures or his many and varied coaching clients.Some of my favorite stories are the ones he tells about his own struggles to find his creative path. During his student years, he literally made himself sick trying to force himself into a life of scholarship. This is a guy with a deep understanding of how we sabotage ourselves and put off our own happiness—and, most importantly, how to turn that around.The book shows signs that Mark has not entirely left his scholarly ways behind. How refreshing to encounter a self-help book with a backbone of deep intelligence. He can write equally convincingly about the latest trends in social media AND the creative habits of Shakespeare and Trollope.Mark wields symbols and metaphor like a poet, not surprising given that he is also a published poet. I liked his use of the pinwheel as a symbol for his four principles of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic, social and personal. “The promise of the pinwheel,” he says, “is to get you out of black-and-white thinking. It’s not a case of creativity versus money, or following your heart versus following the crowd. It’s about how to incorporate all four types of motivation in your career, and make them fuse together with joy.”I was coached by Mark briefly, over a year and a half ago, and not a day goes by when I don’t draw from what he taught me. The guy’s got the goods—and now readers, too, can benefit from his wisdom.Oh, and I’ll just add that, after working for years as a book editor, I was delighted to read a self-published book without spotting a single error! Thanks to the author for respecting his readers enough to get his book properly edited.

If you feel stuck, hopeless, discouraged and confused, this is definitely the book for you! Motivation is not this abstract thing that happens to you, it is something that you can put into action and this book is showing you how and why. It will bring clarity and give you specific steps to uncover what area you are stuck with and how you can get back on track. It is also about your values and how this relates to your motivation, how to identify them and build upon them. It makes you take a close look on how you work and how you can work for you, instead of against you. What really gave me clarity, were the different business models, where you'll identify in what area of your life your creativity lies and how you can move forward from that point.I also love how this book incorporates all reading styles: Whether you like stories or just want to get practical step by step tips or examples, it reaches every reader on the right level.Absolutely a MUST, if you feel stuck, want to be inspired or were just wondering where that motivation comes from! :-)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Freedom Clause by Colby Sutter: Review By Mosholder Colby Sutter’s Freedom Clause: 14 Amendments to Freedom is an interesting book. It starts off as he (Colby Sutter) tells us the story of his past and of the skeletons in his closet, leading into his prayer for the book and how he hopes it will help everyone who dares to read the challenging novel, then into what we can do as the readers to free ourselves from the chains the devil has wrapped is up in. In the beginning, as Colby narrates his beginning of violence and drugs, at first it made me feel terrible about enjoying the story. I thought, I’m reading someone’s past and the terrible tragedies that have happened to him… Why am I enjoying it? However, I realized that what I was enjoying was not his past, but seeing for myself the change in him after God made Himself present. (Though He is always present, I hope you understand what I mean.) The mere fact that Colby would share something as intimate as this is amazing. I can see him sitting in the room with his hands clenched together, pressed to his forehead, wondering if he should really be sharing this. (I am not sure if that happened, I am just saying that this is what I imagined.) He wrote out what he was living and breathing, and how God changed his life for the better. My favorite chapter in this book is Chapter 3; Amendment 4: Forgiveness. I have a lot of forgiving to do in my life, and this book took me one step closer. You see, I always thought I was a forgiving person. I always thought that I let things go easily – That I let them roll off my shoulders and I didn’t say anything about them. But this chapter got me thinking… I do roughly two times the amount of “Well I forgave him, but let me tell you what he did…” that Colby talks about (page 62) than I do of letting things go and forgiving. I thought I was a forgiving person, but this helped me realize that though I am not, I can become one. So, Colby Sutter, thank you for your novel. It took courage to follow God’s Word and His request for you to share your life, to put it all at His mercy, and the mercy of your readers. This book gets a 9/10 from me. (Because this only goes through 5, I give it a 5/5.) The stories, the "interactives" (I am not sure what else to call them), and the hope it gives the hopeless are all given from the mind of a man who wants to serve the Lord and to help the world become a better place.Colby: Wonderful job! I thoroughly enjoyed myself reading this. I hope you like my review, and I hope we can meet in the future!To the rest of you: READ IT! If you need something to change your life in a short amount of time, this is the book. This is the book that will place a seed inside your life that the Lord will grow into something amazing.

By Craig This book is like 2 books in 1.It weaves lessons and workbook style activities to truly change your life together with a very personal story of Colby's life struggles and successes. Read it through without doing all the exercises because I wanted to get more information on Colby's personal journey.Now I'm re-reading it in order to focus on addressing my own struggles.I haven't had the same journey as Colby but the exercises allow you to focus on your personal challenges.

The author explains the connection between belief systems, thinking, feeling, and behavior, how they interact and their consequences. The book is based on solid, well researched scientific evidence and gives 7 easy to implement steps to modify the elements that build your success in life. Chapter two of this book is a masterpiece. it explains the effects of negative thinking and its central areas identifying the types of negative thinking. The typology of negative thinking, based on the research of Aaron Beck and his disciple David Burns, give us a template to really understand negative thinking. The author goes on, in next chapter to gives the ways of modifying negative thinking and thus the behavior that results from it. He explains that there are two opposite basic mindsets, the fixed and the growth mindset, based on the research of psychologist Carol Dweck. Dweck who studied the subject for two decades discovered that each mindset had its patterns of though and action. With these elements, and many other fascinating results from scientific research on language and other areas the author builds a extremely effective way of transforming our behavior and thus changing the way we relate to others and to the world. This book is a unique tool for self understanding and self change. I'ts one of the best books I've come across on how to change yourself, but most importantly, on how to understand yourself. It would be great if school and college students could read this book. It could change their destinies.

The point is how to have the habit of thinking positively. Honestly I have read some books on this subject but they did not work out well on me. So I tried being positive once more and give this book a read. And I find many interesting and new things in it. In short, it contains 7 key steps to build effective, powerful and sustained positive thinking. I like the quotes and the examples it presents. I also like the section of body language in positive thinking. Do you know there are high power poses and low ones? And a smile in the mirror everyday can make big change in your life.

Jakes: Lessons of Leadership Success” is an outstanding book for someone that wants to get in touch with the spiritual side of life. With his 50 life lessons of wisdom by Time Magazine’s America’s best preacher, you can develop your spiritual direction just by reading the pages. The book is like having a spiritual adviser by your side. Through practical application of the concepts you can become more inspired to face life’s biggest challenges. I strongly recommend this book.

It does not however directly reference is the Bible as is sometimes the case with TD Jakes. Its worth, however, is boundless. The only reason I dropped one star is that it is poorly edited. There were misspelled and misplaced words on every third page which is too bad because it became a distraction from the content of the book.

A book that discusses the aspects of each of the congregations in the US or world is a great reference tool in understanding what others believe. Is this book the one to choose for that purpose? First, I will discuss its contents, pros and cons before giving my final opinion.Rhodes' book begins with a very short history of the church (4 pages). He then defines 'denomination,' 'protestant' and gives a description of how to use the book.The books covers the following churches:AdventistsBaptistsBrethrenCatholicChristianCongregationalEpiscopalian and AnglicanFriends (Quaker)Fundamentalist and BibleHolinessLutheranMennoniteMethodistOrthodoxPentecostalPresbyterianReformedWith each congregation, Rhodes begins with a date of origin for the church, census of members and number of congregations. He then describes their beliefs and gives a chart of fast facts for the church. There are several added "fast fact" charts that detail theologies such as Calvinist and Arminian. Each congregation gets 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 pages (except the Roman Catholic Church where 10 pages are written.) Some congregations have a robust history leading into discussion of the divisions within, such as the Orthodox church.Pros:--A large swath of churches is covered.--A good index aids in finding churches. For instance, I wanted to find out what the Nazarene church was like, and the index pointed me to the Holiness section, which I was not aware they were part of.--There is an index of persons that helps in determining which authors are from which church.--Rhodes speaks from an unbiased viewpoint. One could not tell he is conservative dispensational Protestant from this writing.Cons:--Rhodes left out a couple of churches I have wanted to learn about in my town, namely Unitarian. Granted, many do not consider the Unitarian church to be strictly Christian, but it is a prominent congregation that would be helpful to have in the book.--The book is VERY vague about church beliefs. Many of the churches described deny the inerrancy of Scripture, but that can not be determined by the wording used, as the writing makes little distinction between those that call the Scriptures inerrant and those that do not. One must read between the lines or have some knowledge of the church to discern Rhodes' writing. Views of Scripture is only one of the vagueries, but is the most prominent.--The book does NOT discuss the issues that set the churches apart. Worship is spoken about, again, in vague terms. Is Christ present in the Eucharist of the Lutheran churches? One cannot tell from this book. (Some Lutheran churches do teach this and some don't.) Which churches put high focus on speaking in tongues? One cannot tell from this book.My greatest critique is vagueness. Granted, Rhodes could not have been very specific without relying on some theological bias. But, more specifics could be told. From this book, it is very hard to tell why there are divisions. What divides the American Baptists from the Southern Baptists? Episcopalian from Anglican? Greek Orthodox from Orthodox Church in America? Volumes could be written, but little of it could be found out in this writing.Is this book the one to choose for the purpose of understanding other congregations? I have to give a resounding no. The breadth of this book is a blessing and a curse. He doesn't leave many out, but the book would have to be much longer to give any insight into the differences between the congregations discussed.

Clark I found this book to be interesting in many parts, but fairly redundant and often too vague to be as helpful as it could be.The church history is interesting, and it is valuable to realize where all of the Christian denominations fit in the family tree. I also felt it is structured as a nice reference, so one could easily find a specific denomination.However, after a while, all of the theology started to seem to be the same--rather than highlighting the differences, he regurgitates the statements of each denomination in slightly different words for each one. Rather than reiterating the slightly different verbiage for each denomination regarding each major point, it woudl have been helpful to have a basic template with such things as inerrancy of scripture, belief in the Trinity, belief in the human and divine natures of Christ etc--and then have Yes/No or comments on how a specific denomination differs in one particular area. A chart comparing denominations would have been helpfu.I also found it frustrating that not much was said about worship style or structure of church services. While the cover of the book talks about it being handy for someone looking for a new church (or something like that), some things like liturgical worship style (yes/no, or shades of grey) or style of prayer (formal, thees and thous--or informal, "we just"...), or type of music (traditional hymns, organ music vs contemporary worship). Only a few churches who were considered very unique--ie, all singing a capella--were described in detail.I did find the "fast facts" interesting, although not always handily placed--definitions of 'millenial' beliefs were way after the first mention. And the comparision between Armenian and Calvinistic beliefs was interesting, but left out other perspectives which are neither of the 2.All in all, this is a decent book, a decent place to start learning about different denominations. I do wish it had more meat to it, and less redundency; more structure and focus on comparison/contrast and less regurgitation of what ever is on the church website.

Johnson Being a retired Congregational (UCC) minister the first thing I took a look at, in a Christian bookstore, was Rhodes' account of the people later to be known as the Pilgrims who traveled to these shore on the Mayflower. I was very surprised to read that they were led here by their pastor, John Robinson. In fact, John Robinson stayed behind in Leiden, Holland and died there in 1625. His wife who succeeded him once made plans to travel to America but for reasons unknown canceled them. As the assembly which had met at the "green gate" dwindled, she later joined the Dutch Church.John Robinson is rememberd for having said, "God hath yet more truth to bring forth from His holy word."Unfortunately, Rhodes doesn't seem as scholarly as others who have written about denominations, such as Mead, Hill and Atwood in the Handbook of Denominations, which is what I reccommend.

About the Author

Dru Joyce II was born and raised in East Liverpool, Ohio. He is a graduate of East Liverpool High School and Ohio University, with a degree in Business Administration. Dru moved his family to Akron in 1984 for his position at Con Agra. In 2004 Dru left Con Agra after twenty-six years to coach basketball full-time. Service and Leadership By John Bird In Beyond Championships, Coach Dru Joyce writes about the lessons he has learned, along with the values he has strived to instill in his players, through basketball.To Joyce, coaching and life are both about serving others:“Growing up doesn’t mean getting bigger or getting older. It means coming out of the delusion that we are here just for ourselves, just to have our own needs met. It means realizing we were put on this earth to make a difference. It means stepping further and further away from the misconception that we deserve things and more into the idea that we are here to serve.”Joyce has been a successful coach in two ways. First, he has had some outstanding players and teams and has won a lot of championships. Second, and more importantly, he has shaped a lot of lives in a positive way.One of the young men who Joyce coached—LeBron James—wrote this in the book’s forward:“On the court, the goal will always be to win a title. But off the court, the more important goal remains to shape the lives of young people in the community in the same way that Coach Dru shaped mine. We have all read the stories about how coaches overstepped their position of trust. We don't hear much about the coaches that go beyond the role of "coach" and make positive changes in their team. In the book, Beyond Championships, Coach Dru Joyce writes about the lessons he has learned, along with the values he has worked to instill in his players, through coaching basketball.To Joyce, coaching and life are both about serving others:Growing up doesn’t mean getting bigger or getting older. It means stepping further and further away from the misconception that we deserve things and more into the idea that we are here to serve.Coach Joyce has had a long and successful career in coaching for a couple of reasons. The list of championships that he has led teams to win is certainly impressive. He clearly knows the sport and how to encourage players to achieve the skills necessary to win. But secondly, and more importantly to me, are the stories his players share about how he has been the most important force in their lives and is the one responsible for helping them to make the needed changes to be successful both on and off the courts.One of the young men who Joyce coached—LeBron James—wrote this in the book’s forward:On the court, the goal will always be to win a title. But off the court, the more important goal remains to shape the lives of young people in the community in the same way that Coach Dru shaped mine. And if I can do that, even just a little bit, then I will have accomplished something that means so much more to me than any championship.While I am not a huge basketball fan, I enjoyed this book. The principles and encouraging work ethic can be applied to any area. It's not all about winning. It's more important to be made of honor and integrity..and to help those around you to reach their potential. By Andrew Smith I’m a member of the Family Christian Bloggers and they provided me with a free copy of Beyond Championships for this review.In Beyond Champions, Coach Dru II shared ten powerful principles he learned in his life and how they have influenced him as a coach. Some of these included, “The Beauty of Rock Bottom”, “The Power of Words”, “Dare to Dream”, “Take Charge of Your Mind”, and much more. He began the book about how decisions create the environment in which we are living in and they have an impact on the rest of our lives. He worked for a business corporation, ConAgra for 25 years and he was making a good living. He eventually discovered he wanted more and he wanted to follow his true passion, coaching basketball, and working with the young. Leaving his good paying job and changing careers was a tough decision but he realized this choice changed his entire life. He strongly believes in teaching his players the importance of making right decisions and asking themselves where they want to be in the next few years and making sure they plan for their futures.One of my favorite chapters was, “Use the Game; Don’t Let the Game Use You” because this one he opened up about his son, Dru and how he encouraged his son to press on even when it looks impossible. Dru had a dream of playing basketball but he is only five foot two and he struggled with insecurity. People would constantly criticize him for being short and they thought he wouldn’t be able to effectively play basketball. In the Divison III state championship game, when Dru was a freshman, his coach decided to send Dru out into the game. His team was three points down and Dru shocked the audience when he scored seven three pointers and won the game with 21 points. He now plays professional basketball in Germany. He didn’t let people stop him and tell him he couldn’t do it, he pushed on to accomplish his dreams.I would recommend this prevailing book to anyone who enjoys sports and reading a book that has a potent faith built message. I liked how Coach Dru shared personal stories ranging from his past relationships, to meeting his wife, raising a family, business field, and coaching. He was very transparent throughout the book about his disappointments, mistakes, and triumphs and what he learned through the ups and downs. This book taught me the importance of planning for the future and making wise decisions because they affect my life and others. This book would make a great gift to any youth sports fan as well as adults.
