Few words entice and incite like the word witchery. Thousands of self-identified witches, pagans, and magical practitioners embrace the word, but seldom go beyond the practice of the well-accepted and learned forms of "traditional" witchcraft to explore the path of old-witchery. Orion Foxwood invites readers to walk on the path of old-style witchery, a nature-based practice that is as old as the swamps and as wild as the woods.

For the first time, Foxwood reveals some of his own deeply personal rituals and spells directly from his own grimoire of witchery; he highlights the differences (and similarities) between Wicca, "traditional" witchcraft, and old style witchery. By weaving his own path to witchery throughout the book, he gives readers examples of how to identify the way toward this path.

There is a revolution among the Pagan and Witchcraft communities, a movement away from prescribed ritual and neopagan practices and a reaching back toward what Foxwood says is in the heart of any true witch: a thundering call deep within their very blood to become a healer, a reckoner, a protector of magical arts, and a guardian of the wild woods.

Review "I personally know this man--the teacher and the author--Orion Foxwood, now you too can peek into the soul of this dedicated self-actualized witch. This is not a book of spells or diagrams of formalized ritual or even a Goddess Greeting. Instead, you now have a simple but powerful map on 'how to' connect with the Source through tried and true old world witchery ways. Wherever you are , whatever path you are on or even if you know not where you are, you can find your way and learn to Light your own flame in the cauldron to unlock your higher self through this treasure of a book." --Bloody Mary, author, teacher, and voodoo queen"There have been few serious books analyzing traditional witchcraft, or 'witchery' as Orion puts it. He clearly draws from genuine personal experience and looks at the subject in a way few have dared to. It is an inspiring and thought-provoking work on the subject of 'witch blood' and hereditary witchcraft." --Janet Farrar and Gavin Bone, authors of A Witches Bible, The Witches Goddess, The Inner Mysteries and Lifting the Veil"One of the most important voices in witchcraft." --Margot Adler"At 85, I marvel at the amount of genuine advice now offered to those who have heard 'The Call'. Though I am often called a witch, it is not my path, but mine is just as ancient and as sacred. I honour Orion's path, and for a short and precious time was trained in its British version. What you read here is beyond price. This man has given his whole life to this path and has now offered his teachings and experience to those who come after him. Many will buy it for the wrong reason. A few will buy it and know that what they hold in their hands is pure, genuine magical teaching." --Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki, director of studies, Servants of the Light

While I have read, and greatly enjoyed, many of the books about "traditional witchcraft", witchcraft isn't a set beliefs, or even practices, really...it's a Living Power and It lives in your Starry Blood. Many of the folks who practiced witchery didn't always call themselves witches or have a very formal belief system, or even theology. They had Sight, and spirits who taught them. They had a sense for the Power in the Land, that led them to the places where the Veil is thinner, where the "tracks" are. Don't listen to the folks on this page who are concerned about the stang not being mentioned; tools will come, will be given. A witch isn't just someone with an alternative religion. A witch is living magic. That's what this book is about.

Some of the charms and techniques could be useful, and I found myself copying down notes to add into my grimoire. A few of the quotes from his teacher made me laugh and gave the book a friendly, warm tone as opposite to the various "Serious Witch/my witchcraft is realer than yours" attitudes many witches have these days when it comes to discussing non-wiccan witchcraft.Whatever people are calling their craft these days is fine, and a nice break from the silly pagans who claim "I'm an eclectic Wiccan" (as if that even makes sense), but this is definitely not "traditional witchcraft" in the Cochrane vein if that what's you were looking for.No explanation of the stang. And what really irked me was Chapter 3: Treading the Mill of Magic in which the author writes, "there are many other forms, which I cannot share in a book, that involve opening a mill of magic using movement and dance forms using brooms, stones, deer antlers, and other items to shape the power of the mill". Wait, what?! You make a chapter on treading the mill and then at the end turn around and say that you cant share the physical techniques that are used:/That makes no sense, considering those general techniques have been shown on youtube, discussed on podcasts, and explained in various books. I could see not being able to discuss oathbound secrets but he could have at least given the reader a glimpse into some of the previously published techniques.Overall, I feel like this book just wasn't for me. The author does have some good advice and shares his thoughts based on his experience working in different traditions, and the visualization exercises were good, but I just didn't feel like he really gave enough practical information for creating rituals or spell work.

A perfect introduction to Traditional Witchcraft By Phoenix I'll start this review by saying I am VERY picky when it comes to adding to my magical bookshelf. I hesitate, ask around, read reviews, ask again, hesitate once more, and finally go for it. Once I receive the book, I am usually horrendously let down. This was not the case with this book.In this title, you will not find a plethora of spells and charms, nor a list of magical tools. You will not see a section for "holidays" or celebrations. Instead, you will find a fantastic piece of writing where the author pulls no punches and makes honest clad recognizable by any who are "of the blood." Orion makes it immediately clear that he is not giving information from one unbroken line of witchcraft, and even states it would be impossible to do so. Among other things, I thoroughly enjoyed the sections speaking of the witch-blood, witch-fllame, and familiar spirit.Apart from these sections, the author gives multiple lists of examples of what might be considered "witchery" (his abbreviation for traditional witchcraft), all of which proved to be very validating for me. What sets this book apart is that it does not make assumptions about the reader. While most books on this subject begin assuming the reader has at least some form of understanding, this book grabs the attention and guides you on your way, printing material most other books will not touch for reasons unknown.I've only had this book in my position for a day, and have already read through most of its pages. This title is now included on my covens required reading list. I have suggested it to dozens if people already, and suggest it to every witch who identifies with the traditional path. This book is only an introduction, but it is a fantastic introduction which will not only help you on your path, but validate your practices and beliefs while simultaneously challenging you in all the right ways.
