Being fit is something many people aspire to—but what happens when an enjoyable challenge becomes an obsession? Fit Not Healthy is the gripping story of Vanessa Alford, a young woman who enjoyed running as a way to keep herself fit and healthy. She soon discovers she has a talent for long-distance running and trains for her first marathon. She loves it—and soon sets her sights on the 2005 Melbourne Marathon. When she finishes in under three hours and in third place, Vanessa is offered commercial sponsorships and attracts the attentions of elite coaches. Instead of enjoying her win however, she is driven to improve her performance. She pushes her body harder and further, determined to become the best runner she can be. Despite her increasing success and her own training as a physiotherapist she soon finds herself trapped in a spiral of extreme dieting and exercise in order to improve her performances and maintain her "fit and healthy" look. Ignoring the growing concern of her family and friends, Vanessa denies there is anything unhealthy about her fitness training, until the day she finds her body has started rebelling against her. A compelling story about the dangers of overexercising and chasing perfection in a society that rewards and applauds the fastest and the fittest

Review "This is an honest and heart-wrenching journey which gives a real insight into the life of what some athletes put their minds and bodies through. I saw numerous parallels with my own career. An example of an overpowering inner force that warps your reality. Sport can be wonderful but at times lead you down a dangerous path of absorbing passion. Vanessa plunges blindly into self-sabotage by pushing her body beyond the limits. A great read and excellent warning to all high achievers driven to extremes to excel. It’s a story of hope and redemption." —Jana Pittman, two time World Champion, Commonwealth Games gold medallist, three time Australian Olympian"I congratulate Vanessa for writing and sharing about an important and often silent aspect of an athlete's experience with food and training. Her raw honesty about her treacherous battle with her inner voice and revelations will inspire many and are a testament to her strength and integrity." —Anna Vassallo, accredited practicing dietitian"[a] gripping memoir…[the author's] voice rings throughout with a sense of honesty and the wisdom brought by retrospective reflection." —Publishers Weekly"Alford offers a candid and unsettling account of her struggles, and the added journal entries and photographs provide an intimate glimpse of an intelligent, gifted athlete unable to recognize the depth of her illness." — Craig Clark

About the Author Vanessa Alford lectures in sports medicine and is completing her Doctorate of Philosophy in Indigenous Health. She also teaches pilates. She is committed to maintaining a balance between life and health. She continues to jog, but only for 30 minutes at a time a couple of times a week.

GREAT MEMOIR ON THE CURSE OF EXERCISE ADDICTION By Deborah L Rose AS someone who has struggled with an eating disorder for over half my life, and a severe component being an ocd-like exercise addiction, i found this to be one of the best (and most relatable) books I have ever read on the subject of compulsive exercise and the struggles athletes face with positive reinforcement from society for what appears to be a "healthy behavior" (exercise) , and the compliments and respect for what appears to be such a lean and toned physique.... when underneath our bodies are suffering the overuse injuries and complete exhaustion resulting from overexercise. The book demonstrates how completely all encompassing an exercise addiction is - how "selfish" it appears to others, as we lose precious time we could spend with our loved ones - yet our addiction (that voice in our head) will not permit us to deviate from the self-prescribed (self-inflicted) routines created by our brains. I found this book an easy read, I felt less alone and comforted reading the words of someone else whose struggles mirrored mine . I had learned of the book after hearing Vanessa interviewed on a Podcast ( I think it was Ben Greenfield's fitness podcast) and couldn't wait for the release of the book. I have purchased two copies. I gave one to a friend who is struggling with the same compulsions and she is enjoying it too.
