This Mahzor should be used in every synagogue and temple By Israel Drazin This is the first professional English and Hebrew prayer book for Israel’s national holidays: Yom Hazikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day; Yom Haatzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day; and Yom Yerushalayim, the Day that commemorates the return of Jerusalem to Israel. It is a book that should be used by all Jewish congregations and temples, every denomination, to celebrate the State of Israel and its history. The unique volume also includes the grace after full meals, the blessing after other foods, and the transliteration of the Rabbi’s and the Mourner’s Kaddish. The order of the prayers is comprehensive and complete and is based on the practices established by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel. The Hebrew script is the well-known, renowned, and easy to read beautiful Koren script. The English translation by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks is in modern English. Both the Hebrew and the English are composed in a format that places each new idea on a separate line, as in poetry, making understanding easy. Rabbi Shlomo Riskin wrote a moving introduction to the volume and Rabbis Moshe Taragin and Binyamin Lau composed a very informative and extensive commentary to the prayers that appears at the bottom of the prayers. The Mahzor, a word used for a “holiday prayer book,” is divided into two parts. The first part, comprising 661 pages contains what I just described. One encounters this by opening the Mahzor from the right. When one opens the Mahzor from the left, one finds a wealth of meaningful and educational material in 248 pages, a collection of important essays by leading scholars such as the now deceased Rabbis Joseph B. Soloveitchik, Zvi Yehuda Kook, Yehuda Amittai, Yitzhak Nissim, as well as from Dr. Erica Brown, Dr. Yael Ziegler, and Rabbis Binyamin Lau. Mosheh Lichtenstein, Shlomo Riskin. Jonathan Sacks, Herschel Schachter, JJ Schachter, Berel Wein, and many more; 27 essays in all. These essays are in essence an introduction to the Jewish view of the state of Israel as well as the history of Judaism and the Jewish and Israeli view of the future. This is an important book that should be read, even studied.

Well, in the mid-20th century, the State of Israel established four new days of remembrance. Yom HaAtzma’ut, Israel’s Independence Day, recognizes the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, was established in 1953. Yom HaZikaron, a day of remembrance for the fallen soldiers of Israel and victims of terrorism, was established in 1963. Yom Yerushalayim honors the reunification of Jerusalem, and the return of the city to Jewish sovereignty, in 1967.And so we have need for a new machzor, a new seasonal prayerbook. Koren Publishers, in cooperation with the World Mizrachi Movement, just published a Hebrew/English machzor for Yom HaAtzma’ut and Yom Yerushalayim. The Koren Yom HaAtzma’ut Mahzor is an elegant publication. The Publisher’s Preface expresses the hope that the publication of this machzor will "further strengthen the bonds between the Jewish communities in Israel and the United States, Canada, Britian, Australia, South Africa and elsewhere.” While acknowledging the controversy surrounding changing the traditional order of prayers, this machzor includes the special additions to the traditional prayer service that have been suggested by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel.Even if it isn’t your custom to attend synagogue on these special days, it’s worth reading through the commentary and the 200+ pages of essays about the themes of these days that are included with the prayerbook. The essays were written by major scholars, past and present, in the Jewish world, including Rabbi Tzvi Yehuda Kook, Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, Dr. Yael Ziegler, Dr. Erica Brown and many more iconic names. By including so much themed material, Koren has essentially given the reader two books in one. With the Passover Seder still on our minds, don’t miss “A Modern Day Dayeinu Song” whose 15 statements begin with:IF Hashem has brought us back to the Land of Israel,BUT not given us a sovereign state,DAYEINU – it would have been enoughThe Koren Yom HaAtzma’ut Mahzor reminds us that we are living in miraculous times, when the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy is headline news.http://jewishvaluescenter.org/jvoblog/why-we-jews-needed-a-new-prayerbook
