This Mahzor should be used in every synagogue and temple By Israel Drazin This is the first professional English and Hebrew prayer book for Israel’s national holidays: Yom Hazikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day; Yom Haatzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day; and Yom Yerushalayim, the Day that commemorates the return of Jerusalem to Israel. It is a book that should be used by all Jewish congregations and temples, every denomination, to celebrate the State of Israel and its history. The unique volume also includes the grace after full meals, the blessing after other foods, and the transliteration of the Rabbi’s and the Mourner’s Kaddish. The order of the prayers is comprehensive and complete and is based on the practices established by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel. The Hebrew script is the well-known, renowned, and easy to read beautiful Koren script. The English translation by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks is in modern English. Both the Hebrew and the English are composed in a format that places each new idea on a separate line, as in poetry, making understanding easy. Rabbi Shlomo Riskin wrote a moving introduction to the volume and Rabbis Moshe Taragin and Binyamin Lau composed a very informative and extensive commentary to the prayers that appears at the bottom of the prayers. The Mahzor, a word used for a “holiday prayer book,” is divided into two parts. The first part, comprising 661 pages contains what I just described. One encounters this by opening the Mahzor from the right. When one opens the Mahzor from the left, one finds a wealth of meaningful and educational material in 248 pages, a collection of important essays by leading scholars such as the now deceased Rabbis Joseph B. Soloveitchik, Zvi Yehuda Kook, Yehuda Amittai, Yitzhak Nissim, as well as from Dr. Erica Brown, Dr. Yael Ziegler, and Rabbis Binyamin Lau. Mosheh Lichtenstein, Shlomo Riskin. Jonathan Sacks, Herschel Schachter, JJ Schachter, Berel Wein, and many more; 27 essays in all. These essays are in essence an introduction to the Jewish view of the state of Israel as well as the history of Judaism and the Jewish and Israeli view of the future. This is an important book that should be read, even studied.

Well, in the mid-20th century, the State of Israel established four new days of remembrance. Yom HaAtzma’ut, Israel’s Independence Day, recognizes the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, was established in 1953. Yom HaZikaron, a day of remembrance for the fallen soldiers of Israel and victims of terrorism, was established in 1963. Yom Yerushalayim honors the reunification of Jerusalem, and the return of the city to Jewish sovereignty, in 1967.And so we have need for a new machzor, a new seasonal prayerbook. Koren Publishers, in cooperation with the World Mizrachi Movement, just published a Hebrew/English machzor for Yom HaAtzma’ut and Yom Yerushalayim. The Koren Yom HaAtzma’ut Mahzor is an elegant publication. The Publisher’s Preface expresses the hope that the publication of this machzor will "further strengthen the bonds between the Jewish communities in Israel and the United States, Canada, Britian, Australia, South Africa and elsewhere.” While acknowledging the controversy surrounding changing the traditional order of prayers, this machzor includes the special additions to the traditional prayer service that have been suggested by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel.Even if it isn’t your custom to attend synagogue on these special days, it’s worth reading through the commentary and the 200+ pages of essays about the themes of these days that are included with the prayerbook. The essays were written by major scholars, past and present, in the Jewish world, including Rabbi Tzvi Yehuda Kook, Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, Dr. Yael Ziegler, Dr. Erica Brown and many more iconic names. By including so much themed material, Koren has essentially given the reader two books in one. With the Passover Seder still on our minds, don’t miss “A Modern Day Dayeinu Song” whose 15 statements begin with:IF Hashem has brought us back to the Land of Israel,BUT not given us a sovereign state,DAYEINU – it would have been enoughThe Koren Yom HaAtzma’ut Mahzor reminds us that we are living in miraculous times, when the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy is headline news.http://jewishvaluescenter.org/jvoblog/why-we-jews-needed-a-new-prayerbook

— A Classic — Includes Active Table of Contents — Includes Religious Illustrations Clemens Brentano was a well-known and well-to-do German poet and writer. After he had met the German nun and mystic, Anna Emmerich, on September 24, 1818, he was so amazed, he decided to be her stenographer. He later wrote, “I feel that I must stay here, that I must not leave this admirable creature before her death. I feel that my mission is here, and that God has heard the prayer I made when I begged him to give me something to do for His glory that would not be above my strength. Aeterna Press

I thought this book was a lovely read, and give me renewed interest in the Bible itself. As with all her books, it is like reading the full story as opposed to the headlines. Because Anne Catherine was a nun, it is often supposed that this, and indeed all her books, are only for Catholics. However, for Jewish people, it gives a most profound knowledge of the rich Jewish culture two thousand years ago, and for Christians, it fills in the blanks that Mathew, Mark, Luke and John left - they probably didn't realise that two thousand years later, their readers would not know what a Jewish wedding was like (Mary's dress and hair do left me breathless!). After reading the Chapter of Christmas, you too will wonder how Santa Claus managed to take over this wonderful event. I have also read the four volumes of the Life and Passion of Our Lord. Easter has never been the same for me.NOTHING in her books contradicts the bible in any way. It just brings it to life.

There is not a lot of mention of her in the Bible and I was curious because this book is written "from the visions of Ven. Anne Catherine Emmerich." As I expected this is much more than someone's fictional interpolation of the scant Biblical information. It is actually an on-going interview with the very ill Emmerich. There is a lot of repetition because her words are not often edited but she tells some amazing information much of which is verified by ancient writings other than the Bible. This gives credibility to her "fly on the wall" observations of Mary, Joseph, the three wise men and even St. John the Baptist and why he grew up in the desert. It was fascinating.

By A Customer Miss Emmerich relates in minute and often beautiful detail her visions of the life of Mary, from her conception to her assumption. Although not necessarily historical, the visions are a benefit to meditation on the events that we do know to have taken place, and help transport the reader back to Palestine in the first century.

Many people ask why more Catholic priests don't speak up about the crisis roiling the Church: the rampant sexual abuse of children and youth, the second-class status of women, the denial of dignity and respect for gay and lesbian persons, and the woeful and at times criminal behavior of bishops. Crying Out for Justice Full-Throated and Unsparingly is one priest's personal story of awakening to the urgent need for structural reform. Tim Stier's 25 years of experience as a parish priest in five parishes in the suburbs of Oakland, California, and ten more years in voluntary exile, provide ample evidence that the Catholic Church is in dire need of change. Real reform requires truth telling and this book does a lot of that. The abysmal leadership in many dioceses and parishes causes real suffering to real people.

I do know this story of the 3 innocent boys, told in this book, as true because one of the boys is a relative of mine. . I feel it is about time that someone takes the time to get this out there as it was news at the time in local papers. To my knowledge nothing had been done further till now and shoved under the rug. This book written with truths and courage is one that has needed to be told, and hopefully something will come of change within the Catholic Church. "Tell the Truth" is how we were raised, now time for the Church to correct the wrongs that have been done, and "Tell the Truth" to all. I am still a Catholic, in my believe of God, but not with the way the church is handling this.

Tim Stier is able to be fully honest about what ails the Catholic Church at the dawn of the 21st Century. His account of his own journey and reflections on the state of the priesthood, parish and diocese life, the abuse crisis, and the treatment of women and homosexuals will resonate with many other Catholics in exile, or considering exile.

We both left the service to enter the seminary, and we both ended up as Whistleblowers. I commend him on his well-written book. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down until I finished it (at 2AM). I know from first-hand experience how difficult it is to stand up to the Institution that we were led to believe is "The Church," even though the Church is really the People of God, who have been badly shortchanged by the Institution. Like the prophets of old, we all need to "Cry Out for Justice" for all of the People of God today. We also need to oppose the bureaucrats who sacrificed innocent children to protect their reputations and careers.

A new edition of Gregory Dix's masterpiece, still essential reading for students and scholars and in print constantly for fifty years.

Dom Gregory Dix's classic account of the development of the Eucharist rite continues to be the definitive and authoritative work on the subject. He presents his massive scholarship in lively and non technical language for all who wish to understand their worship in terms of the framework from which it has evolved. He demonstrates the creative force of Christianity over the centuries through liturgy and the societies it has moulded. His great work has for nearly fifty years regularly been quoted for its devotional as well as its historical value, and has regularly attracted new readers.

In this book for the first time, critical studies in the learned periodicals of many countries have been carefully sifted and the results arranged to give a clear picture of the development of the Eucharistic rite.

The reason is that Dix is perhaps the most thorough and erudite liturgical scholar of the 20th century. `Shape' is a classic that has fundamentally shaped most Protestant and Catholic denominations. To the person not familiar with `liturgy,' it means `work of the people,' and is the way in which Christians have traditionally worshipped. It is a common worship, in which the worship of various separate churches is similar, but varies by time of year, and with the local culture.Dix starts with an introduction to the Liturgy; then he moves on to the performance of the Liturgy. Then he begins his historical quest, in which he attempts to find the roots of the liturgy in the Biblical documents, moving into the pre-Nicene time period. It was in the very early pre-Nicene times that the Eucharist came to consist of a four-action shape: offering, thanksgiving, fraction, and communion. He discusses the Eucharistic prayer, the local traditions, the meaning and theology of the Eucharist, consecration theology, sanctification of time, and the ceremonial. He then discusses the completion of the shape, and the use of variable prayers. Then he covers the medieval liturgy, the Reformation liturgies (with particular attention to Anglican issues), and a call for renewal.Overall, Dix's work is monumental. Sometimes, it is a bit too monumental. The work is 764 pages long. Much of what he says could be condensed into probably 200 pages effectively. However, his attention to detail is marvelous: he has read every Church father writing 2-3 times! Dix is partly responsible for the rediscovery of Liturgy in most mainline Churches, from the Evangelical Lutheran Church to the United Methodist Church. His research into early liturgies has demonstrated the Jewish nature of many Christian liturgies. I highly recommend this book. However, a little patience is needed to get through the entire book.

55 of 56 people found the following review helpful. Senior Pastor of Grace Community Fellowship By David W. Kaiser An excellent overview of the liturgical development of the early church. I would recommend this book to all people like myself that are non-liturgical. Dix brings out that the general outline of the service of the Eucharist "is everywhere most remarkably the same after 300 years of independent existance in the widely scattered church" in the Mediterranean region. If the non-liturical fundamentalist arguement that pagan intrusion was the origin of the Eucharist service were true, we would expect to see widely divergent local customs surrounding the eucharist service. The only explanation to explain the remarkable similarity is a common origin that must date to the very beginning of the Christian movement, before its missionary expansion. This would mean that the original design of the Eucharist liturgical service was done with Apostolic oversight. This is blockbuster news to a non-liturgical cleric like myself. After reading this book, I now have more of a respect for the desire of my liturgic brother to keep the shape of the liturgy as it has been handed down to him or her. And I now will be more open to incorporating parts of the liturgy into our non-liturgical service. This is a must read for those that are contemplating throwing out the customs and practices of the liturgical service as being boring and repetitious. Instead the ministry of the liturgical church needs to teach what Dom Gregory Dix writes to the laity of the church, so they understand the various parts of the service, what they mean and their Apostolic origins. If someone had done that for me when I was an adolescent growing up in a liturgical church, I might have stayed in the church, instead of moving on to be a pastor in a non-liturgical denomination.

With the "rediscovery" of the richness and depth of the ancient forms of worship, the reprint of this classic on liturgy is very welcomed.Dom Gregory Dix, an Anglican scholar, began a short presentation of the shape of liturgy that by his own admission became an expansive examination of how the Church has worshipped over the centuries. The research is outstanding and the general usefulness of the book is amazing considering the length to which the author has gone to verify his conclusions. This outstanding work is a key for those theologians, pastors and priests seriously interested in the worship of the church through the ages. A serious layman can obtain much from the book as well.

The cross of Christ has long been a historic and revered religious icon as well as a divine dividing line within humanity. The powerful Pure Flix film Do You Believe? ushers the timeless question of the meaning of the cross to a deeply personal place: What does it mean to me? Is it only a symbol or truly salvation? The Do You Believe? 40-Day Devotional is a  journey centered around the eternal evidence and powerful proof of the great love of God with the sacrifice offered for humanity associated with only One, His Son, Jesus Christ. In the film, a challenging question is brought before our politically correct culture: If you were accused of being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you? Regardless of your own answer to such a question, or the place in life you may find yourself, these 40 days can be an investment into your future and more importantly, your eternity as you pursue a deeper level of faith for yourself. The Do You Believe? Devotional book is a daily walk through the word of God with inspiring quotes from the film. It offers a respite from the rush of life and the peace and hope made available only through the cross.

By Vincent Although I am not a real believer in astrology and determining someone’s character by the time they were born, I feel like this book is a great beginner’s guide to astrology to anyone who is interested in it. It explains the main traits and personality aspects of the different animals or calendar indicated astrology symbols. For someone who is not familiar with it or wants to find out more about themselves by looking up what they are, this book is a nice introduction. It shows positive aspects, personality traits, and other qualities for aries, gemini, etc. Often you find those predictions in newspapers about your week, but the elaborate explanation is missing. In this book you can see the basics and understand the background of each one of them better.

I hate to admit it but I'm definitely addicted to reading about the subject, and mostly about myself LOL. I like reading different interpretations on the various signs and how they interrelate. Although I know there's really no scientific basis behind astrology, it's somehow continues to be highly accurate from my perspective. I don't know how that works but, I'll take it :-). Anyway, I picked up this book on the fly to read while on the bus. It's definitely a great read and I had fun with it and that author seemed fairly knowledgeable of the subject. If you're looking for a good introduction to the subject of astrology and the zodiac, I would definitely suggest this book by Taylor.

An easy-to-understand book on astrology By John Hayes I bought this book as I wanted to understand astrology beyond the horoscopes that we all see in the media. As Susannah explains :"It's the study of relationships and patterns from the planets in motion, our birth chart, and the make-up of elements."It is a well-written,easy to understand book. She explains each of the zodiac signs, which I found fascinating as my own is remarkably accurate.
