Lauren F. Winner—a leading writer at the crossroads of culture and spirituality and author of Still and Girl Meets God—joins the ranks of luminaries such as Anne Lamott and Barbara Brown Taylor with this exploration of little known—and, so, little used—biblical metaphors for God, metaphors which can open new doorways for our lives and spiritualities.

There are hundreds of metaphors for God, but the church only uses a few familiar images: creator, judge, savior, father. In Wearing God, Lauren Winner gathers a number of lesser-known tropes, reflecting on how they work biblically and culturally, and reveals how they can deepen our spiritual lives.

Exploring the notion of God as clothing, Winner reflects on how we are “clothed with Christ” or how “God fits us like a garment.” She then analyzes how clothing functions culturally to shape our ideals and identify our community, and ruminates on how this new metaphor can function to create new possibilities for our lives. For each biblical metaphor—God as the vine/vintner who animates life; the lactation consultant; and the comedian, showing us our follies, for example—Winner surveys the historical, literary, and cultural landscapes in order to revive and heal our souls.

Wearing God: Clothing, Laughter, Fire, and Other Overlooked Ways of Meeting God, by Lauren F. Winner

Review “A gorgeously written and compelling investigation into what it means to strike up a friendship with the Living God.” (James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage)“The images Lauren introduces me to in Wearing God have stayed with me, enriching my prayers and broadening my view of God. I love her writing, and this book is no exception.” (Shauna Niequist, author of Bread & Wine)“In Wearing God—a book both winsome and erudite—Winner convenes a salon of saints and biblical writers to reveal that God is much more than just Shepherd or King and far more interesting than we thought.” (Fred Bahnson, Wake Forest University School of Divinity, author of Soil and Sacrament: A Spiritual Memoir of Food and Faith)“Lauren’s curiosity about the life of faith is so compelling—and her intelligence so engaging—that there is nothing more satisfying than settling down with a new book from her. The only problem is that it is impossible to read her without being changed; so advance at your own risk.” (Barbara Brown Taylor, author of Learning to Walk in the Dark)“Combining spiritual insight and beautifully descriptive prose . . . Winner looks at the ways God can be known through the everyday and familiar. [Her] honest, charming reflections stir the imagination and invite the reader to explore . . . the treasure trove the Bible provides.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“If Christianity is to regain its credibility, or even its positive character, people are going to have to read books like this! Winner opens up Scripture in ways that are loyal to the Great Tradition, and yet readable, faith-filled, and applicable to the world we actually live in.” (Richard Rohr, O.F.M., author of Falling Upward)“Lauren Winner explores less familiar biblical descriptions of God and how each shapes the way we think about who God is. Wearing God is a warm, playful reflection that not only expands our understanding of God, but also highlights the delicate interweaving of language and imagination.” (Relevant Magazine)“With her trademark acerbic wit and wry honesty, Winner delves into a few seldom used biblical images for God. . . . A mixture of anecdotes and thought-provoking analysis, Wearing God proves a wise and appealing companion on the journey.” (Shelf Awareness)“Provides a playful and thoughtful excursion into fresh ways of seeing and savoring the Divine in the unfolding of our ordinary lives.” (Spirituality & Practice)” [An] appealing book . . . a thoughtful mediation on God, spirituality, and the fabric of life.” (Booklist)“Lauren Winner’s Wearing God is playful, serious, informative, devotional, and as important as it is gratifying. . . . I read it with the sort of joy one feels when watching someone utterly hit their stride.” (Christian Century)“Winner is a gifted writer (and a voracious reader).” (The Charlotte Observer)“[These] metaphors clarify and inspire. Winner, no iconoclast, has painted us some pictures worthy of veneration.” (Aleteia)“This book begs to be savored, to be revisited, to be slept with, prayed over, and pondered.” (RevGals)Winner parses centuries of people trying to make sense of God [and] deploys her lively spiritual imagination and bookworm sensibility to take us beyond cliché and into new territory. . . . She sees invitations to consider mystery where many of us see only a wall. (The Rumpus.com)

From the Back Cover

"Around five years ago, I began to realize that my pictures of God were old. This intersected, not coincidentally, with my newfound wakefulness to the scriptures, and it led me on a search: what pictures, what images and metaphors, does the Bible give us for who God is, and what ways of being with God might those pictures invite?

"One of the invitations of this book—and, I think, of the Bible—is this: you can discover things about God by looking around your ordinary, everyday life. There is a method here, and it is Jesus's method. Jesus, after all, specialized in asking people to steep themselves in the words of the scriptures and then to look around their ordinary Tuesdays to see what they could see about holiness and life with God. This is not merely entertaining wordplay to give overactive minds something pious to do. It is the Bible's way of making us aware of God and of the world in which we meet God."

—from Wearing God

So begins a wise and lyrical journey as scholar and Episcopal priest Lauren Winner tries on overlooked metaphors for how we meet and experience God. Chapters on God as clothing, laughter, flame, food, wine, and a laboring woman not only invite us to understand God in a new way, but each reveals God to be much closer and more intimate than we imagine, opening up the opportunity for experiencing and knowing God more deeply. If God has felt distant or absent, or if your reading of scripture has become cold or rote, reading Wearing God can serve as the hymn that revives you.

If you've been looking for new ways to see God in the world and in your own life, Lauren Winner does so in an accessible way. She's so good at taking academic knowledge and making it relevant to contemporary life. It's a great book for further reflection on the spiritual life; one that can rejuvenate a stale relationship with God.

A helpful view of God from different perspectives By half.pint This book, more than any other, is one that captures the essence of Lauren Winner's writing style. She has the uncanny ability to invite God into the chair on the front porch for an intimate dialogue as friends. Perhaps she can do so because she wrote this book in conversation with diverse groups of people - bringing insights from those of Jewish and Christian faiths; the perspectives of strangers, of loved ones; and the voices and stories of both the incarcerated and the free. She paints a picture of God for us that is worth further meditation.

God is a shackled birthing mother By Clint Schnekloth Winner promises to surprise us with "overlooked" ways of meeting God, and she does not disappoint. In fact, she goes one step further, and surprises us with new ways to actually understand God. It's really remarkable. A couple of chapters approach metaphors somewhat common in liturgical faith communities, like clothes, bread, and wine. These chapters are still very rich. But what really stand out are chapters on "Laboring Women," "Smell," "Flame," and a concluding postscript on her ministry in a women's prison. In these chapters, I found myself reading about God and encountering God in ways I literally hadn't before, not because they had been unavailable to me (they are, after all, in my personal experience and in theological literature) but because I had overlooked them. Literally. As just one example, Winner spends much of the chapter on "Laboring Women" actually describing the birth process, and recognizing the shift that has occurred in our culture where more men than ever are present at births, but also more women than ever don't know the personal experience of birthing because, for a variety of reasons, they aren't having children. But then Winner goes on to look at Trinitarian language for God, offering one such image--Mother, Baby, Midwife--I had never considered, even though one is able to find language for this analogy in Scripture itself, and all over the patristic and medieval writings. This is the other surprise of Winner's book, all the wonderful short quotes she pulls from throughout Christian history. Her book is already powerful enough as it is. The quotes make for a faith compendium I will be returning to over and over to inspire me.Finally, Winner offers a variety of challenges in the book that will change how I act. For example, did you know that many incarcerated women who are pregnant are actually shackled during the birth of their child, including chains wrapped around their torso and bodies. Not only is this dangerous for the baby, it is inhumane and against international law. Winner's deep identification with incarcerated women wends its way through the whole book, and makes it not just a memoir, but a call to justice. You really need to read it.

Rejoicing in Christ, by Michael Reeves

Review "Rejoicing in Christ is just what the title implies―a delighted feasting on the person and work of our Lord. . . .In short, Rejoicing in Christ lives up to its title. Not every Christian will read it, of course, but I cannot imagine that Christian who could read it and not sense his mind stimulated and his heart stirred. Read and enjoy―you will find your soul nourished and your heart enlarged. This will likely be the most enjoyable book you've read in a long time." (Fred G. Zaspel, Books at a Glance, May 20, 2015)"Rejoicing in Christ helps us celebrate who Christ is, His work on earth, His death and resurrection, His anticipated return, and how we share in His life. It aims for something deeper than a new technique or a call to action. In an age that virtually compels us to look at ourselves, Michael Reeve's calls us to look at Christ. As we focus our hearts on Him, we see how He is our life, our righteousness, our holiness, and our hope." (Facts & Trends, May/June/July 2015)"Can you talk too much about Christ? Michael Reeves argues no! This book calls us to rejoice in the one in whom is found all joy. No small Jesus here―Jesus writ large and made much of. Enjoy this book and enjoy the Christ to whom this book points." (Josh Moody, pastor of College Church, Wheaton, IL)"This is how to write Christology: biblical, theological, historical, pastoral and spiritual! Theology at its best from one of today's best theologians." (Simon Ponsonby, pastor of theology, St Aldate's Church, Oxford)"Mike Reeves has done it again. This is another rich, deep, simple, joyful, thrilling book―theology that does what theology should, pointing us to Jesus, marveling and celebrating." (Andrew Wilson, elder at Kings Church, Eastbourne, and author of several books, including If God Then What? Wondering Aloud About Truth, Origins & Redemption)"Reeves has expounded a crucial and central doctrine of the gospel with clarity and verve. This is a scintillating treatment of a vital subject." (Robert Letham, lecturer in systematic theology, Wales Evangelical School of Theology)"Michael Reeves has written a simple and yet elegant introduction to the work of Jesus Christ. He provides a wonderful overview of Jesus in eternity, Jesus triumphing over evil and Jesus reigning forever. Reeves shows that for believers, our life is from Christ, and Christ is our life! His account of Christian doctrine about Jesus is complemented with a treasure trove of historical artwork depicting Jesus, stimulating the mind as well as the heart." (Michael F. Bird, lecturer in theology at Ridley College, Melbourne, Australia)"God created us 'to glorify and enjoy him forever.' But what does it mean to enjoy God? Michael Reeves has a knack not only for making great truths accessible, but for leading us to bask in the warmth of Christ. Our mediator not only in salvation, but in creation and the consummation, Christ isn't just a gift-giver―he is the Gift. As an example of devotional theology, this book stands out. If you want to love Christ more, you need a better view of him. Rejoicing in Christ gives you a front-row seat." (Michael Horton, J. Gresham Machen Professor of Theology, Westminster Seminary California)

21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. This is how theology ought to be done! By Chris Woznicki There was once a day when most theology books were written in order to elicit a worshipful response from the reader. This was especially true of books on Christology – these books were intended to make the reader see how awesome, powerful, gracious, kind and all out joy inducing Christ was. However, our theology books have slowly began to be written by specialists out of touch with the heart of the church – and thus these types of theology books have become the exception rather than the norm. Michael Reeves’ book Rejoicing in Christ seeks to take us back to the days when worshipful theology books were the norm. He seeks to present a through and rigorous Christology all the while presenting it in such a way that causes people to (this is not be being clever) rejoice in Christ. This book is based on the notion that at the center of Christianity is not an idea, rather its not even the “gospel” – the center of Christianity is Christ himself. Everything begins and ends with Christ. At one point he even says that “to be truly Trinitarian we must constantly be Christ centered.” (23) He is absolutely correct! This little book has 5 short chapters. Chapter 1 covers Christ’s role in creation and his preexistence. Chapter 2 covers his humanity an life prior to the crucifixion. Chapter 3 covers his death and resurrection. Chapter 4 covers how our lives as Christians are grounded in our present union with him. Chapter 5 is concerned with eschatology. You might summarize the book like this (119): Past: Having died with him, we can look no further back into our past than him. Christ, not our failure, is our history. Present: United to him, we now share his glad life and standing before the Father. Filled with his Spirit, we are made ever more like him. Future: the judge of all the earth is our faithful Savior; when he appears we will be with him, we will be like him and we will be co-heirs with him. What great news! There are a couple of themes that weave themselves throughout this work – all themes that many evangelicals have sadly forgotten or just plain ignored. The first is a sort of Adam Christology – here Reeves does not simply cover the typical Romans 5 passage or simply discuss federal headship – rather Reeves consistently comes back to the notion that Christ fulfills Adam’s humanity in a sort recapitulation of Adam’s vocation. The second is an emphasis on union with Christ. This theme was certainly central to the reformers like Calvin and Luther, but has been ignored by many evangelicals up until recently. Both of these themes – which constantly pop up in every chapter of the book are grounded in Patristic themes. This sure makes sense – because a lot of Reeves theology has affinities with T.F. Torrance’s theology. It’s a sort of Reformed take on Patristic theology.I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I think that you will enjoy it took. Rejoicing in Christ represents the perfect blend of head and heart. Rejoicing in Christ exemplifies what Christian theology ought to look like – its academically rigorous yet always reverent and worshipful. But that is not only the goal of Christian theology – it’s the goal of human beings as well… or as the WST puts it: 1. What is the chief end of man? A. Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever. As you read this wonderful book I have no doubt that you will be led to glorify God because of it and find yourself rejoicing and enjoying Christ more than you did before you even cracked this book open.(Note: I received this book from IVP in exchange for an impartial review.)

Dillard I recommend Reeves' Rejoicing in Christ as the 21st century equivalent of On the Incarnation by Athanasius! Reeves' teaching about Christ is very Scriptural, accessible, clear, engaging, stimulating, soul-feeding and heart-transforming! Reeves helps the reader to know and rejoice in Christ more, and to want to know him and rejoice in him more and more! I think people should also read Athanasius' wonderful little book On the Incarnation as well, but whether they do or not I hope they will read Reeves' Rejoicing in Christ.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The Joy of Christology By James R. V. Matichuk The problem with much Christology, of both the high and low varieties, is that it can be dry-as-dust boring. Just the mention of the term, and eyes glaze over. The church historians may remember the fire and intrigue of earlier eras, theologians may happily enter the world of doctrinal abstraction, but for most of us, Christology remains opaque. We may be happy that someone is thinking about it somewhere, but we never delve too deeply ourselves.Michael Reeves, author of the delightful Delighting in the Trinity and teacher of theology at Wales Evangelical School of Theology has once again helped us discover the joy of serious theological reflection. Rejoicing in Christ uncovers the joy in all that Christ is and has done for us. In five chapters (plus a brief introduction and conclusion), Reeves worshipful prose reflect on Christ’s divinity; his humanity; his life, death, and resurrection; how we share in his life; and his victorious return and the renewal of all things. This is a short book, but meaty–doctrinally delightful and exuding with praise for the God revealed in Jesus Christ! In writing this book, Reeves is picking up on the tradition of worshipful theology once common among the Puritans, “Once upon a time a book like this would have been utterly run of the mill. Among the old Puritans, for example, you can scarcely find a writer who did not write–or a preacher who did not preach–something called The Unsearchable Riches of Christ, Christ set Forth. The Glory of Christ or the like” (9). In fact these Puritans are Reeves dialogue partners throughout. He refers often to the works of Richard Sibbes, John Owens, Jonathan Edwards and the like. The caricature of the dour Puritan is not evident anywhere in these pages. Other theologians, pastors, poets and artists of other eras are also woven into his larger Christological song.I love this book. I appreciate the way that Reeves reveals Jesus as the eternal Word. He declares, “Here, then, is the revolution for all our dreams, our dark and frightened imaginings of God, there is no God in heaven who is unlike Jesus” (14). Reeves invites us to reflect on how the person and character of Jesus shows us what God is like–not who he became when taking on flesh, but the sort of God, God always was. He reflects on who Jesus was and how he shared in the Trinitarian life before his Incarnation. But his Christological reflections also wrestle with Christ’s humanity and what Jesus shows us about what it really means to human–taking up again our function as ‘image bearers of God’ (52). In his incarnation we discover the Christ who has been ‘lifted up on the cross, lifted up from the grave, lifted up to the throne: all to share with the world his victorious life (81). Reeves chapter on our sharing in the ‘life of Christ’ and Christ’s return do not shrink back from reflecting on suffering and difficulty, but uncover the joy of abiding and the hope of restoration. This entire book will help you appreciate the way Christ has given us ‘every blessing in the spiritual realm’ (Ephesians 1:3).My one small critique, if you may call it that, is that this is sold by IVP’s academic imprint (IVP Academic). While this book should certainly be read by scholarly folk, I would hope that regular readers would not be scared off by this being an ‘academic book.’ This book is great for any thoughtful Christian. I give it five stars!Notice of material connection: I received this book from IVP academic in exchange for my honest review.

This really helped in getting some basic formations down. I liked the way each pose was named, and there was a clear picture for each pose. I did want a little more description about how to do each pose, but that would be my only complaint. This seemed like a good book to get started in practicing your yoga positions.

A Short Guide to Praying as a Family: Growing Together in Faith and Love Each Day, by Dominican Sisters of Saint Cecilia Congregation

About the Author About the Authors: The Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia (The Nashville Dominicans) Eight centuries ago St. Dominic de Guzman, inspired by the Holy Spirit in response to the needs of his time, founded an Order with the mission of preaching for the salvation of souls. Dominic s love for God and neighbor continues to inspire the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia Congregation today, as they joyfully embrace the Church s call to the new evangelization. Founded in 1860 in Nashville, Tennessee, the Sisters live a contemplative-apostolic life of community, study, and apostolic service in a monastic framework that fosters contemplation. Through the apostolate of teaching, the Sisters have the privilege of serving students and families in the United States, Canada, Australia, Italy, Scotland, and the Netherlands. Under the protection and guidance of Mary, the Sisters seek to live in fidelity to the Church and to bring others to Christ. About the Photographer Father Lawrence Lew, O.P. A Dominican priest of the Province of England, Father Lawrence shares his love for beauty and his talent for capturing it through thousands of photographs of sacred art and architecture, of people and nature. Father Lawrence reflects, I find that, as Hopkins said, the world is charged with the grandeur of God, and so my photos might be likened to an offering of thanks to God for the goodness I see around me. His gift for photography is becoming more and more widely recognized. We are very grateful to Father Lawrence for his generosity in providing the stunning photographs of stained glass contained in this book.

Full-color illustrations throughout of beautiful stained glass from around the world, photographed by Dominican friar Lawrence Lew, are perfectly matched to the text. The guide contains all of the traditional Catholic prayers and others less well-known, accompanied by helpful ways to incorporate prayer into modern family life. A perfect choice for young families and new converts, or anyone wanting to infuse their home life with more prayer and blessings.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Every family should have this book! By Thomas L. Costa I highly recommend this beautiful book to anyone looking for something to bring the family together in prayer. In addition to being a practical collection of prayers, it contains thoughtful explanations of these prayers to better understand the why and when some of these prayers should be used. The artwork on the cover is just a sampling of the images you'll find on almost every page. The art is a treat for the eyes that even my youngest children find fascinating. I enjoyed the history, stories and instructions that are sure to help me and my family in our prayer life. This would make a great Mother's Day or Father's Day gift!
