Let's see...this is the part where I convince you that you need this book. This book will massage your feet. This book will bring you a fuzzy blanket at the end of a long day of parenting your tiny little insanazoids. I promise to make you snort laugh at least once. After reading this book, you'll rock jazz hands, be able to sing on-key, and never, ever have to fold laundry again. Okay, they told me I'm actually supposed to tell you a little about the book. Um, right. Look. Here's the thing. Too many of us women are frazzled and lonely, isolated in our minivans while schlepping bags, strollers, and munchkins to and fro across town. It doesn't have to be this way. In this guide to "momlationships," I use a dating analogy to take us "around the bases" to our home-run friendships, the ones that last a lifetime, not just a soccer season. This is our journey to each other, to finding our people and being other people's people, to learning how to bless each other and not destroy each other.  It's sometimes scary. And always awkward. Let's have some fun.

And after all, all of the women in the 'female fiction' books you read, or TV shows (think Rachel and Monica and Phoebe) or movies (Thelma and Louise? Beaches?) seem to have learned that finding and maintaining those relationships is a piece of cake, right? I mean, they just happen so naturally, right? Guess what? WRONG!It's scary! And it's even scarier when you're a young mom (or newly married) because, let's face it...old things have passed away. Like your friendships with single friends who don't have to clean up projectile vomiting at 3am or refrain from hitting a husband over the head when he looks at you wrong. The biggest thing they worry about is a broken nail or a bad hair day. Gahh...you're lucky if you even get a shower this week! But the thought of striking up a friendship with someone you don't know strikes fear in your soul. You're immediately taken back to middle school when the all important thing in life was whether the popular girls would accept you into their little popular girl clique. What if the grown up prospective friend gives you that head to toe and back to head "look"? You know the one. What if? What if she laughs at you? What if she thinks you're weird? Or needy? Let's be real. The grown up women in your circle are highly unlikely to do that. And if they are predisposed to that kind of behavior, you're in the wrong place. So how do you meet women friends who are in the same boat? In her book, 'Women Are Scary', Melanie Dale takes a hilarious look at how we search and and find others who want to journey along with us in this crazy, fun, beautiful life. The step by step how-to book is laugh-out-loud funny as you explore finding friendships within the context of the old (heretofore all male standby) first base, second base, third base, and when you're really, really lucky, fourth base - which is a friendship that you will value and treasure. You know, if we searched for female friends with the same laser-like focus that we employed when hunting a husband, we'd all be better off. For some reason, we expect female friendships to just happen. Why is that? When you're single, you're hyper alert and sensitive to prospective husband material. But prospective friend material. You expect it to drop in your lap. Guess what? Work it, girl! Anyone friend worth being and staying in your life is someone worth searching for and working to keep.Melanie gives you a ton of ideas of where you will find like minded women, and when you do find them, how to recognize them. And after that, how to begin the first little budding friendship. How to go about having 'Mom Dates'. These are the all important times that you carve out of your schedule to spend with your friends. You know, those women who will tell you the truth about your mom jeans? Or that you have toilet paper hanging off your rear? Or the eye makeup that you think says, "Come hither" really says "Run for your life!!!"?You have to realize that it's time to stop wondering why you don't have a bunch of great female friends like everyone else (news flash - we don't) and start working on it. Start doing something about it. Start making it a priority. Because it is. Your husband is your #1, but he cannot give you what your female friends do. He freezes when you ask, "Does this make my butt look big?" Your female friends? Hah. They say, "Well, uh, yeah, it kinda does." If they're real friends. If not, they freeze, too.You will totally enjoy this book by Melanie Dale. And you'll find yourself excited about finding some moms to date!I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Has Good Points By Amanda Klopping Women are Scary is ostensibly a book about how to find, make, and keep female friends while managing to be a mother at the same time. What it ends up being is a humorous memoir about the difficulties that mothers have trying to maintain adult friendships. Which, as most moms get, is a tough thing to do. I'm still not quite sure what to make of this book. It starts off very funny, but the style started to wear on me after a while. The author is a blogger, and while I'm sure her writing style is perfect for a blog, I think there just isn't enough substance here to be worthy of a full length book. The premise is interesting, but you can't buy this book thinking it's going to be full of awesome relationship advice. For moms out there, truly, I think we know who makes a good fit for us and who doesn't. It all comes down to the time that we have for socializing. This book is valuable if you just want a good bubble-bath kind of a read that's going to cheer you up at the end of a long day full of too much spit-up and not enough adult conversation. This book is going to remind you that you are fulfilling a very important God-given role, and that you are not the only one who doesn't channel June Cleaver every day. I also appreciate this book because it acknowledges all mothers equally - adoptive, birth, "working", "stay-at-home" and every other label that society has put upon us. It also has some incredible suggestions for simple charitable works that mothers can do while on play-date outings with each other. I'll be looking into some of these ideas myself, and the book is worth a read if only for those suggestions.Disclaimer: I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

By Beloved I will start with the minor critiques since I want to end this review on a positive note. The first is likely on the publisher's side, not the author. As a reader, I want to highlight what speaks to me, not what the publisher thinks should speak to me, I found the highlighted text very distracting especially when it immediately followed that same text in the paragraph. A lot of great things struck me on a personal level but none of them were what was highlighted on the page. I was also a tad disappointed about the lack of dialogue of single mom friendships. Trying to make friends as a single mom with a group of woman and their husbands, is absolutely petrifying. It can be downright cruel at times and the "mom monsters" Dale refers to are usually out in full swing. I also understand that never being a single mom, this was not Dale's wheelhouse, so I completely forgive her! Now on to what I liked/loved: The book is honest. I know with 100% certainty that Dale is as genuine in real life as the book makes her seem. Having had the chancer recently to meet her, I know that she truly will give you a full frontal hug and mean every second of the squeeze. Her book is not to sell books, it is her real stories, passion and humor. She is as genuine as the day is long and that is the type of author I will always connect with through their writing. I'm certain others will too. She is wiling to be vulnerable in effort to be a part of a mom friendship. Some people never become willing to do this- they just wait to see if it happens and miss out on a lot of friendship opportunities. I love that she gives clear guides on how to put yourself out there. Her points about using mom friendships to do good in the world was really interesting to me and not something I had ever considered. I'm excited to try to round up the girls to do one of the activities she mentions in the book! Moms on a mission is simple and brilliant. I also love her faith through very difficult times and the insight of the dialogue in her head as she processes what is happening to her and her family. She makes me laugh numerous times throughout the book and while some of what she writes about is sad, she presents it as it actually happened and not in the typical author's "go for the cry" motivated writing style. She is not interested in getting the reader's reaction, she is interested in telling her story in the most honest way possible so that another mom who is struggling may connect. She is endearing, funny and a great author. I was able to visualize every single scenario she presented because she is amazing at painting the picture with both humility and love. It's a great book and I highly recommend it.
