Padre Pio died on September 23, 1968, his funeral attended by over 100,000 people. During the fifty-eight years he was a priest, his monastery at San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy, became a mecca for pilgrims from all over the world. Born Francesco Forgione on May 25, 1887 in the town of Pietrelcina in southeastern Italy, Padre Pio joined the Capuchin Order in 1903 and was ordained in 1910. On September 20, 1918 he received the sacred wounds of Christ, the stigmata, which he bore the rest of his life. Renowned for the stigmata, which modern medical science could not explain, Padre Pio also possessed other unusual qualities, such as bilocation, celestial perfume, reading of hearts, miraculous cures, remarkable conversions, and prophetic insight. Although he did not leave his monastery and was under obedience not to write or preach, this humble Capuchin monk became world famous for his piety, his counsel, and his miracles. He was universally regarded as a saint in his own time. Pope John Paul II beatified Padre Pio of Pietrelcina on Sunday, May 2, 1999 in St. Peter's Basilica Square before a throng of 650,000 devotees of this famed 20th-century stigmatist. His faithful followers now look forward with anticipation to his canonization. "Remember that God is within us when we are in His grace, and outside of us when we are in sin." -Padre Pio

Content By A Customer If you are looking for specific information about Padre Pio, such as miracle healings attributed to him, this is the book for you. Each chapter covers a different topic. One deals exclusively with the healings, another contains spritual advice he gave to people and another lists bilocations. It doesn't read like a chronological biography with all of these events mixed together. Overall, I found this to be one of the better books I've read on Padre Pio.

There are many books written about him, and this is one of the best and most complete. He was a Capuchin friar born in southern Italy in 1887 and died in 1968. He bore the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, for 50 years. He also possessed other unusual qualities, such as bilocation, odor of perfume, the reading of hearts, miraculous cures, remarkable conversions and prophetic insight. Because of his ability to read hearts many people sought to confess their sins to him. Although he heard confessions for 12 to 14 hours a day, it was necessary to register 10 days in advance because so many people desired his spiritual direction.I highly recommend this book and also "Stories of Padre Pio" by Madame Katharina Tangari.
7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. This is an Excellent Book By Eric B. Borgman To be honest I didn't think I'd find another really good book on Saint Padre Pio. I figured Padre Pio: The True Story couldn't be topped, but this book which is older is perhaps a nice counterpart with Ruffin's biography. Whereas this book is not as detailed on the biography parts of the book it is more detailed on the miraculous aspects of Padre Pio. It gives some detailed acounts of cures, miracles and conversions. Often times giving the names and dates of the people involved. It has detailed accounts of his medical reports as well as discussing his ability to bilocate. It even has a whole chapter on Padre Pio's spiritual maxims and another on letters to his spiritual children. I have no doubt to the authenticity of Padre Pio's holiness and his works which were done by the grace of God. Skeptics who try to say that St. Pio's wounds were faked and that he was a fraud don't know what they are talking about. Padre Pio after working a miracle would always direct the the cured person to God instead of himself. He would tell them to thank God and not him. This is an excellent book and recommend it for any Padre Pio fan.
