About the Author Michael Fishbane is the Nathan Cummings Distinguished Service Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of Chicago. He is the author and editor of numerous books, including The JPS Bible Commentary: Haftarot (2002); the National Jewish Book Award–winning Biblical Interpretation in Ancient Israel; and The Kiss of God: Spiritual and Mystical Death in Judaism. Fishbane received a lifetime achievement award for scholarship from the National Foundation of Jewish Culture and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

I was expecting something smaller, on the order of the commentaries on the other megillot (good as they are), but this is far larger. Every single verse is explained with the full gamut of traditional commentaries, looking at it from all the various perspectives, while more modern explanations are given in lengthy essays following. It will take some time to digest it fully, but it looks quite promising from the start.

By Kathleen Farrell The JPS Bible Commentary on the Song of Songs is an incredible resource for reading and study. The introduction explains clearly the issues surrounding the inclusion of this book in the Hebrew Bible, detailing the rabbinic discussions about the canon. Also included is an overview of some of the language aspects, including repetition, similes and dialogic structure. The Song of Songs is placed in the historical and geographic context of the Ancient Near East, showing parallels with Mesopotamian and Egyptian love poetry. The commentary itself is thorough and beautifully presented, addressing the traditional four levels of Jewish interpretation: Peshat, Derash, Remez and Sod. At the end of the book is a concise history of Jewish interpretations of the Song of Songs.

On the one hand, it is exceptionally detailed and evaluates the history of interpretation from every possible vantage point. It also applies four traditional Jewish interpretive models to each section of the text. While I am in awe of the scholarship, I found myself frustrated by the lack of clearly articulated opinions. This is less a precise commentary of the text than it is a compendium of interpretive possibilities. For my purposes, it rates 3 stars.
