Ever since the first pathways were cleared through Maine's forested wilderness, something we now call Bigfoot has haunted the edges of civilization. The difference between a contemporary cryptozoological sighting and an encounter with a Wild Man in the eighteenth century is the modern presence of a popularly shared conception of Bigfoot. Whatever one may think of Bigfoot-an extant relict hominid, pure bunk, or something tantalizingly possible-the idea of a large, hairy, man-like creature roaming North American forests is ingrained in our culture. Shadows in the Woods chronicles Maine's rich Bigfoot record in Native American traditions and beliefs, Wild Man sightings, modern Bigfoot encounters, literary appearances of hairy man-like creatures, and strange somethings in tales and stories suggestive of Bigfoot. Whether physical or ethereal, the mysterious presence behind the legend of Bigfoot casts a significant shadow in the Pine Tree State.

Greenville, Ohio: Coachwhip Publications, 2015. ([...]) No physical address noted. 515 pages, paperback, photos, maps, tables, extensive bibliographical notes, footnotes. ISBN: 1-61646-284-1. $22.95, order through Amazon.com The first thing I noticed about this book was how deep the bibliography is: nineteen pages and loaded with information. A sampling: “Wild Man At Large In Minot.” Boston, Daily Globe, July 21, 1896. Bigfoot, be it myth or reality, is not a modern day invention. I would expect a book like this to be penned by Maine’s well known cryptozoologist, Loren Coleman, but instead it is written by a shy and little known Daniel Green, 44 (no relationship to the famous John Green). Said the reclusive author to me, “To be a part of your newsletter, with its reputation for consistency and high standards, is quite a compliment.  I respectfully demure on the photo.” No picture of the writer is seen in the book and there is no “about the author” section. The author’s writing is clear and easy to grasp. A sampling, “This book is not presenting material as evidence for Bigfoot in Maine and not intended to convince nor cast doubts in regards to the existence of Bigfoot. The present volume in intended to chronicle Bigfoot in Maine in both past and modern contexts.” The author doesn’t come right out and state that Bigfoot exist but offers this instead: “I am sympathetic to the belief held by many…” in the reality of Bigfoot. In his 1978 book, John Green noted four reports from Maine and the late Rick Berry, in his 1993 book, lists 10 reports up to the time of publication. Daniel Green has noted 43 sightings just for the year, 1993, and a great many more before and after that time. Instead of calling the people who research the topic “Sasquatchians,” Daniel Green has a chapter devoted to this, called “Personalities and Expeditions,” There is depth of scholarship offered in this exhaustive tome including chapter 11, “Historical Literature - Musing on Indian Devils and Other Stories.” If you sidestep the old references to Bigfoot you can move right up to the modern era and the author has done a nice job describing contemporary reports. On January 12, 2005, R. Brown found tracks in Gardiner, Maine which measured 16 inches long by 7 inches across. The stride was “7 feet.” The witness followed the tracks “for a mile before quitting.” There is very little downside to this book. Perhaps I would have noted chapter number and name on each page instead the obvious, the title of the book, Shadows In The Woods. It would have made the book more user friendly. Having the footnotes at the end of the chapter instead of the back of the book may have helped as well. Daniel Green’s book will undoubtedly be the main Bigfoot book on Maine for many years to come and is a worthy addition to your library, whether you live on the West or East Coast. A lot of work went into this book. Noted Janet Mullen in a recent review, “Mr. Green’s writing and skills at compiling stories is superb.” Finally, from the back of the book: “Whether physical or ethereal, the mysterious presence behind the legend of Bigfoot cast a significant shadow in the Pine Tree State.”
