I admit, I've written many versions of this review. But I never leave reviews, without first thinking through the effects of a book. And Axis had so many effects, that I ended up thinking a long time. Here's the result of that. So, what do I think of Axis of Aaron?Well, it's unexpected as a work. Johnny and Sean are fun people to me. That's always been the dominant impression I got from their stuff. But as fun as these guys are, I've never forgotten the intellect that always bubbled under the surface. With this book, that intellect suddenly came to the fore. Don't get me wrong. This is still a fun read. It'll make you lose time, and forget to live life for a bit. But as fun as it is, this book will make you think. Not just about itself, but about yourself, too.I think that's the strong point of Axis. It challenges you, it makes you question what you think you know. And since it deals with the very nature of reality, that's a heck of a question to ponder. The key thing is, Axis does all that, while still being an amazing story.Because as mind-bending as it is, it's still a narrative. And a strong one, too.How strong, you may ask?Well, when I was reading this, I felt like I was free-falling. Towards the end, it was like reaching terminal velocity. I found myself saying, "No. It's not possible. I can't fall any faster than this. My mind is shot. What the heck are these guys doing to me?" As uncomfortable as that question was, I couldn't help turning the pages. I think that says it all, about how good of a story this is. As uncomfortable as it is to read at times, you can't NOT read it.It's almost some weird, compulsive thing. Ebon's all confused, and you're all confused, and you're questioning your sanity, but you don't want to stop the ride. That's what it was like for me. I got carried away. Ebon's journey became my own. I felt the confusion he felt. I identified with his dilemmas and moral questions. I felt his unraveling, his desperate desire to forget, and his increasingly futile attempts to make sense of it all. Yes, it was uncomfortable. No one likes having their sanity shaken up. But I would never trade the discomfort for anything. It's made me learn about myself, and that's priceless.Truth be told, I think the book's effects prove something.Only the best stories carry us with them. Only the best stories make us think while we feel. Only the best stories make us question ourselves. These sorts of stories change us, and we're never the same at the end. Axis of Aaron is that kind of story. It's not the easiest thing to read, but it is worth it. If you're looking for a way to kill time, this makes for time well-killed.I recommend it to everyone, and am happy to say so.Sean and Johnny - you guys hit a home run again. Keep the stories coming.

Truant have proven themselves to be one of the most dynamic writing teams of the past decade. Each novel they release is full of memorable characters, fascinating locales, and solid storytelling. With their latest offering, the standalone tale Axis of Aaron, the duo have crafted their most memorable location yet: a Twin Peaks-esque island community in which very little is what it seems. Unraveling the mystery with the novel's protagonist, the heartbroken Ebon Shale, is integral to the fun, so I don't want to say too much more about the plot, but be prepared for a dark and twisted ride, but also a hopeful and uplifting one. I finished this book several weeks ago, and can't stop thinking about it. It's probably the best book I read in 2014.

By Annabele NO SPOILERS in my review, feel safe reading it  This isn't my usual read I'm more of an apocalyptic horror sci-fi mystery gal, when asked by the Authors (via email to their mailing list) if I would like a Free ARC (Advanced Reader's Copy) of a literary mind-bender, in exchange for an honest, impartial review, I thought to myself, why not? I do them for other Authors, why not for Sean and Johnny too?It took me awhile to get into this book, but that was only because I am so used to their sci-fi, apocalyptic paranormal horror books. I kept waiting for something along those lines to pop-up on me. After a few chapters, it finally registered in my brain that this is a serious book, no zombies or whatever will be jumping out at me. So in order to give the book a Fair read, I started over again from the beginning. That said, on to my review.BLURB from description: The main character, Ebon Shale suffers a tragedy in his life, he wants familiarity around him after the sudden death, and illuminated betrayal of his new wife (and long-time girlfriend). Fleeing to the quiet seaside town of Aaron, a place that's been calling him back since he was a child, he is hoping to disprove that old adage "You can't go home again." Desperate to forget and terrified of being forgotten, once there he feels lost. The small town's citizens are as odd as its energy, and seem to shift the reality before him. Will Aaron help Ebon forget, or will it swallow him whole? The book flips reality to the point you where you don't know what way is up or down, drifting back and forth until you start to wonder what is real and what isn't, until you become as confused as Ebon himself, you find yourself wondering all the while, where will it all lead?I personally loved the story, there are so many events where you can really relate, this in turn allows you to strongly identify with the main character. Sorry to be so vague, but I really can't get into detail or say anything else, that would require spoilers and I just won't go there. You will just have to read the book yourself and find out.I was surprised how much I Really enjoyed this book, but then it was written by two of my favorite authors, and while I have never read such a serious book (or subject matter) from them before, it was well done.No noticeable typos, errors in sentence structure, the storyline and characters were well developed. Highly recommended.NOTE: I was given a Free Copy of this book in exchange for an honest and impartial review, and as those who know me can attest, a Free Review Copy doesn't prevent me from giving a bad or One Star review if I didn't like a book.
