In THE SAVAGE PROFESSOR by Robert Roper, Professor Anthony Landau, renowned epidemiologist, returns to his home in the Berkeley Hills to find a woman, a former scientific colleague, naked and quite dead in his bed. Her death sets in motion a chain of events—and murders—that will have the locals terrified, UC Berkeley's academics pointing fingers, the cops under pressure to solve the crimes, the tabloid press crying for blood, and Landau as everyone's number-one pick for serial killer of the year. Newsweek has called author Robert Roper, "An authentic American voice," and USA Today has written of him: "A major talent, clearly a master of disguises and the telling detail, a writer with a clear but perfectly eccentric vision."

Newman Anything Robert Roper writes is worth reading, in my opinion. He's one of the best novelists and non-fiction writers of the last 50 years--"Royo County," "The Trespassers," "Cuervo Tales" are all flat out brilliant. With "The Savage Professor," he's written a genre novel, but one with a lot more to it than your average crime novel. I dug this crazy crime novel gone sideways: homicide, epidemiology, satire (not sure if it was intended, but Berkeley sounds more excruciatingly p.c. than even Minneapolis, where I live—good stuff!), poignant moments, terrific writing, etc., all to be found within. I found it to be fascinating, entertaining, and a whole lot of other things.

Would the real Robert Roper please stand up?I bought this book after admiring the well researched and equally well written The Road to Lolita. This book was written by a very accomplished writer, but I could not stand the (to me) unnecessary graphic violence and sick-making mutilation scenes . . .Is it a sign of our times that authors feel the need to include such things to reach a broad public that will buy their books (or is this really the.author's way to present this otherwise deep and satisfying story)? If so, and it does not quite seem to hold true for this book, according to sale figures, it is understandable but not a welcome ploy, at least not to me. The book is loaded with interesting and likable people, including the so multi-faceted protagonist, Wonderful reflections about relationships, career motivations and envy . . .I love the idea of the role of the police versus that of his so-called defense team. Ultimately, who solves this crime, anyway, and who collects astronomical fees?

The Dirty Old Professor By Jane I live in Berkeley and wanted to like this book, but I didn't because the protagonist is just plain narcissistic and misogynistic. The women are all sex objects and either submissive or bitches. Many of them end up brutally murdered. The book is filled with phony self-reflection rather than depth of character. There isn't much of a mystery either.
