As the United States sinks to the bottom of a housing-collapse recession, Williston flames into the only hotspot of economic growth in the country. While the oil-rich subterranean ground is blasted apart with new fracking techniques, down-on-their luck people pour into Williston — hoping to strike it rich and turn their lives around. Everything is maxed out. Walmart’s parking lot is a shantytown of RV’s, rent prices quadruple as inflation soars and money changes hands fast and furious. For many locals, this is what they’ve been waiting for! Another chance to get rich, to fleece the newcomers and oil companies alike. Everyone wants a piece of the action and the townies who run the local government, expect bribes and practice extortion at every opportunity. As in Washington D.C., as in Williston, N.D. This is a story of boomtown greed.

This was a very easy read, fun and entertaining. I have always been curious of the story of the Bakken Shale oil boom in North Dakota. The author does a good job of blending a fictional story with some of the reality of what it must have been like in this crazy boom town. There are lots of quirky characters, all looking to get a piece of the action. Some were winners and some were losers. If you need a fun book for a vacation, weekend get away or long plane ride, this won't disappoint.

By Dane County EXPLOITATION OF FARMLAND AND WATER COMING TO THE RURAL AREA BY YOUThis book is a wake up call for anyone who thinks that sacrificing our water and land for the sake of "jobs" is a good trade. This book is terrific with how it uses the third person story telling style. The reader is caught up in the story at a personal level (wondering what is going to happen next) and observing the destruction of farmland and aquifers through the eyes of the characters. I wish that the voters of Wisconsin could have had this read to them in 2010. Then, we would know exactly what kind of people are supporting our conservative politicians and what their agenda of greed is all about. They would see exactly what methods are used to get at the resources, who really profits, and what is left behind. There are no oil shales in Wisconsin, but there is mineral wealth. And, in the remote areas of the driftless region, the same greedy people are destroying the hillsides with extracting sand. As the late George Carlin said: "They hold all the cards, the tables are tipped, and they don't care".

By David R French This book is, sadly, a realistic depiction of current events occurring in the Oil Patch. And, as always, history repeats itself. Reading Mr. Schmaltz's book made me think of past "booms" in America involving oil, gold, silver, etc. Inevitably the introduction of sudden, immense wealth brought great prosperity to some at a great cost to many which was not always recognized at the time. During last year's elections I listened to current North Dakota politicians bragging about the great job they are doing to bring all of this wealth into the state (like they had anything to do with it). Some of the characters in this book sound just like them!
