Chad Gibbs has lived his entire life in Alabama, the buckle of America’s Bible Belt, where Christianity is a person’s default setting. In Jesus Without Borders, Gibbs steps outside of his very comfortable existence, to learn what it’s like to be a Christian anywhere else in the world.

Over the course of many months, Chad and his Alabama worldview spent time with believers from Beijing to Rio de Janeiro, worshiping with them and observing not only how their faith influences their daily lives but also how their daily lives influence their faith, in hopes of learning which parts of his faith have been compromised by the American Dream.

Reflecting on conversations and experiences, Gibbs wrestles with a wide range of questions from his conservative Christian background, including politics and patriotism in the church and how living in Alabama has shaped his views on pacifism, alcohol, and Christ himself. An attempt to extract and examine the biases in the author’s own faith, Jesus Without Borders will have readers questioning if they believe certain things because they are a Christian, or because they are an American, as they meet believers from around the world with differing views on a variety of subjects.

Told with Gibbs’ trademark humor, Jesus Without Borders enlightens and entertains, introducing readers to believers around the world in hopes of eliminating prejudices and misconceptions, clearing away the parts of our culture that keep us from seeing a clearer picture of Christ, and living connected to the family of faith around the globe.

By The Joseph Craven I'm not going to say this to puff up Chad's already puffed ego, and I can't give an unbiased review of "Jesus Without Borders" since I was in the book, but I do want to share/promote it a bit.I actually got sad when I finished reading the book, a little upset that there wasn't more to read. That seems funny to say, since it's technically a travel book and not some stirring and emotional novel or something. But it connected with a lot of really important things. It appeals to the restless desire to see the world, but even for those of us who are in love with where we are, it encourages us to broaden our perspective of the rest of the planet. As a person who loves my hometown much, much more as a result of seeing more of the world, I loved that appeal. It pushes against complacency that often creeps up in our American Christian lives, away from actual physical persecution that happens elsewhere, but also sheds light on there are people in our faith around the world who live without fear, no matter the potential harm. As a person who is afraid of all kinds of pointless things, I needed that push.It points out that there are a ton of divides in our faith, and that people all around the world look at different things with totally different views, and maybe those who believe slightly differently than the rest of us aren't our enemies. As a member of a smaller Presbyterian church yet an employee at a larger Methodist church but who also gets constantly mad at every opinion I see on Facebook, I both loved and hated this point.Or maybe it's just a travel book, and Chad is a funny writer. Whatever. All I really know is that I loved being a part of it, underlined a lot of it, laughed at most of it, bought a few copies for other people, and got sad when I finished reading it.

Consisting of part humorous travel writing (food, lodging, sites, soccer!) and part observation of Christian culture around the world, the author shares his experiences of visiting 13 international locations. This book resonated with me because I, like Gibbs, have grown up in the southern U.S. in the same Christian denomination, and it wasn't until I began to travel did I begin to understand how varied (and beautiful) the body of Christ is around the world.I recommend this book for people, like myself, who have been bitten by the travel bug. Reading it will either satisfy those desires for a time or cause you to break open a piggy bank and book a flight.I also recommend it to American Christians who have the "God-blessed-the-USA-so-why-would-I-want-to-go-anywhere-else" syndrome. I find that way too many Christians have a narrow or misunderstood view of the world outside our borders.Besides, it's jolly good fun to read.

A very impressive and enjoyable book By Joe Cox If you find yourself contemplating reading a book that will entertain you, or a book that will make you laugh, or a book that will challenge your preconceptions about Christianity and America, well, put those books back on the shelf, and grab this one, because it does ALL of those things.Chad Gibbs's concept is simple-- travel to various nations, meet local Christians, attend worship, and see what he learns about faith, about America, and about Christianity outside America. The results pack a poignant punch. The book can be informative, poignant, and challenging-- and will make you laugh every now and again, in case it's getting too serious. My wife and I both enjoyed this book, and I've already found myself recommending it to other readers. It's a fun book, it's an important book, and it's one that I highly recommend.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Strongly Recommend! By KAK As a relative newcomer to the Wiccan path, this book was a pleasure to read. It was insightful to me on multiple levels as it contained new information, but also confirmed what I'd read from other sources. To my particular delight, I found references to many of Scott Cunningham's works. His wisdom and teachings went a long way in letting me know I'd finally found my path, and I was so pleased to find another author who so openly supported and encouraged solitary, personalized practice!Kardia writes in a style that is both engaging and informative. She passes her information on in a manner that is easy to understand and I found myself making connections throughout that I hadn't necessarily made before. One particular example is the connection between the wheel of the year and the story of the Goddess and God. I would recommend this book to any newcomer to Wicca or the Pagan path and look forward to other publications by this author.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Wonderrfully Magickal By Lisa I received a free copy of this book for review. The book is chockful of information on how to live wicca today with the minimum of fuss. Instead, the book focuses on the joy and celebratory way of honoring the seasons. I found out that I have once in a while participated in the wiccan celebrations without fully understanding what I was doing. This book clarified a lot of things - like the meaning of casting a circle, calling the four corners, etc. The import is great. The book also reinforces positivity as a great outlook in life. It is true that the energy you send out to the universe will return to you, magnified. Positive messages. Positive thoughts. To achieve this we need to train our minds to think positively all the time.I realized that living wicca today, in this present century is not difficuclt. We only have to look around us, be glad and rejoice about life and the simplicity of life, of connecting not only to each other but to the elements - earth, wind, fire, air, and spirit. But it takes a lot of willpower to think positively with all the nuances and subliminal messages pervading this age of technology.

I was received into the Church when I was six years old. Strictly speaking, therefore, I am not a “cradle” Catholic but a “rocking-horse” Catholic. At the time of my birth my parents, both of whom had been baptised into the Protestant Church, did not believe in or practise any definite religion at all; neither, I think, did they attach the least importance to any.

It tells about Caryll Houselander's experiances as she begin to see that the Catholic Faith was the correct faith, along with the help of one of her best friends and some nuns she stayed with. It brought back so many memories of my own baptism and my sister's. In so many ways it reminded me of my walk with the church. You will see how she realized that she was not as good a person as she thought she was. She learned this after living with the nuns for a few years. It is a fun book to read and will make you smile many times. I would highly recommend it to everyone!

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A Rocking Horse Catholic By SusieQ The title refers to the fact that the English author wasn't a "cradle Catholic" but rather was baptized at age 6, when her mother semi-converted to the religion; thus she was a "rocking horse Catholic".I wish I knew why Caryll Houselander (1901-1954) isn't a better known religious author today. When I asked about her books, at a Catholic bookstore, no less, all I got was a blank look from the sales clerk. "Carol who?" She was an excellent writer, with the knack of making Catholic complexities reasonable; understandable, to the Catholic and non-Catholic alike, and yet, almost everything she's written has fallen out of print.A Rocking Horse Catholic is a short memoir of Ms. Houselander's childhood and young adulthood. Written in a simple, direct, almost conversational style, it's an autobiography that can be read and enjoyed by anyone of almost any age. While I don't really admire Houselander's poetry (at least, from the samples in this book) her prose is by turns humorous, moving, and always engrossing. She ultimately gained penetrating insight into herself and the persons around her. While bearing in mind that the Catholic faith and practice have changed in certain drastic ways since Ms. Houselander's youth, I think this autobiography would make an excellent gift to a young Catholic, or anyone who's interested in reading about a journey through (and to) religious faith.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A Rocking-Horse Catholic By Richard Ketchum I read a few parts of this book, a few years ago. It was a borrowed copy, so I couldn't finish it at that time. I think it is one of the better books Caryll Houselander has written. Written in true Houselander form, it is inspiring in only the way she can present the Catholic Faith, from a truely human point of view. Easily readable and hard to put down. There are two ways to read this book: 1.) Start early Saturday morning and just don't stop, or; 2.) [the way I did] Read until you reach a point where you feel you should stop for a time, and meditate on that for a few days... pick it up a couple days later and do the same thing again. The hard copy I am now ordering will be for my wife, for our anniversary. I know she will read it in one sitting, then I will be able to pick up right where I left off a few years ago. Believe me...you will enjoy it and order more for your best friends, and better yet, your worst enemies. God Bless and happy reading.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Go Vegan! By Murphy Richards According to the author, a vegan diet is essentially made of plants, such as vegetables, fruits, grains and nuts. A vegan diet promotes abstinence of using animal products in your foods in the spirit of rejecting the commodity status of animals. Consumption of fruits and leafy vegetables supplies the basic needs of a body for various vitamins. In addition to being rejuvenating to the mind, they provide proper care to the body. The book encourages individuals to participate in vegan diet as it offers various recipes which are highly nutritious and taste good as well. It is also argued that growing plants take much fewer resources than growing animals on farms which often takes a heavy toll on the environment. Therefore, the essence of a vegan diet is to fulfill the ethical duty of being a human being while simultaneously enjoying the nutritious boost a vegan diet provides.

Die Wise does not offer seven steps for coping with death. It does not suggest ways to make dying easier. It pours no honey to make the medicine go down. Instead, with lyrical prose, deep wisdom, and stories from his two decades of working with dying people and their families, Stephen Jenkinson places death at the center of the page and asks us to behold it in all its painful beauty.  Die Wise teaches the skills of dying, skills that have to be learned in the course of living deeply and well. Die Wise is for those who will fail to live forever. Dying well, Jenkinson writes, is a right and responsibility of everyone. It is not a lifestyle option. It is a moral, political, and spiritual obligation each person owes their ancestors and their heirs. Die Wise dreams such a dream, and plots such an uprising. How we die, how we care for dying people, and how we carry our dead: this work makes our capacity for a village-mindedness, or breaks it.Table of ContentsThe Ordeal of a Managed DeathStealing Meaning from DyingThe Tyrant HopeThe Quality of LifeYes, But Not Like ThisThe WorkSo Who Are the Dying to You? Dying Facing HomeWhat Dying Asks of Us AllKidsAh, My Friend the Enemy

Die Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity and Soul, by Stephen Jenkinson

Review “Stephen Jenkinson’s elegant and sorrow-freighted book brings prophetic insight rather than pastoral affirmations. A true story-man, Jenkinson paints image after image on the cave wall of his parchment. Die Wise is a formidable body of work, road-tested in ways most of us hope never to know about. Stay with it, hold the sorrow as the gift it is, savor in small, immense chunks. Every word is an invitation to trade fantasy for imagination. There isn’t a book like it.” —Dr. Martin Shaw, author of Snowy Tower: Parzival and the Wet, Black Branch of Language

52 of 53 people found the following review helpful. slow at first, powerful by the end By A reader I had quite mixed reactions to this book. On the one hand, the author clearly has many years of experience working with dying people, their families, and various health workers. He writes with great sensitivity. Sometimes his stories brought back vivid memories of deaths of loved ones: the mysterious course that life can take; the fear on all sides; the unknowns; the frustration with the medical system; the strangeness of it all (especially watching someone's consciousness wax and wane - can they hear us? are they aware?) and the relief that simple kindness could bring.Several things make this a difficult read: first, the subject matter; also, an underlying cynicism from Jenkinson, and partly the writing itself, which tends to be wordy and to wander in unexpected directions, the way one might in an impassioned conversation about a cherished subject. Jenkinson repeats his ideas many times, and spends long stretches of the book telling us what is *not* working in our society's approach to death before finally beginning to write about about how to "die wise." He is extremely critical of the modern practices that extend the lives of people with life threatening illnesses, and of palliative care as offered today. The implications and complications of all of this are revisited many times: "more time" (to live) means "more dying" (as opposed to a quick, peaceful death that is not anticipated.)However, as the chapters go by, Jenkinson's ideas for a better way gradually emerge, and well into the book, he writes eloquently and passionately about true acceptance of death and honest conversation with the dying, as opposed to "cheerleading" and denial of what is really happening. He uses lots of imagery from nature, and occasionally quotes beautiful poetry to underscore his points. Not the easiest read, but in the midst it all, there are touching and even beautiful moments. Recommended to readers who can be patient and flexible with the above.

I loved The Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and was hoping that this would be a great companion book on the important subject of America's death phobia from a different angle. So let's start with the good: the author clearly knows his subject. His deep commitment to it saturates the pages. He addresses some critical issues surrounding death, dying, and - importantly - struggling to die in our modern culture. He has good stories that have the potential to movingly speak to the complications we've created for ourselves, and the horrible positions so many people find themselves in. The book has tremendous potential for power, depth, and impact.Unfortunately, it never achieves that potential. It was agonizingly slow to read and hard to process, because the author has an exceptionally idiosyncratic writing style (for lack of a better description). I read a lot, in many different genres, so I'm usually pretty good at adapting to an author's writing style. But here I found myself constantly re-reading sentences - not just twice, but four and five times trying to decipher what the author was saying. Sentences and paragraphs were set up in ways that, although technically grammatically acceptable, were extremely hard to follow, bouncing back and forth between people and subjects. Powerful lessons and subtle emphasis were completely obscured by unnecessarily hard to follow writing.Although everything was genuinely connected, and should have been woven seamlessly together as part of a larger picture, transitions were not smooth. The text didn't jump jaggedly from one topic to another so much as never clearly establish where you were or where you were going. I'd abruptly realize that I was reading about something completely different than I had been two pages ago, with no idea how we got there or why, and wonder what happened to the previous topic, since it hadn't been resolved in any way.Reading this book felt like being lost in a huge, exotic city and wandering around corners and down narrow, densely packed streets. You know that all the streets are interconnected as part of a larger, clear city design, but you can't see it. There are fascinating things everywhere that could take days to explore, and provide plenty to savor, but they're so lost in the babble of unfamiliar languages, bright colors, and packed crowds that you can't quite reach or touch them.I feel like the author is one of those people who would be great to interact with in person, in a specific, small-group setting designed around the material. Sadly, he did not (in my humble opinion) succeed in translating his message into an accessible form in this book.

Good Substance; Bad Form By Zoeeagleeye The excellently titled "Die Wise" by Stephen Jenkinson is a work of passion, poetic sensibility and high intelligence. So why only three stars: well, it may seem I quibble, but let me state my case. First, Jenkinson, despite his deeply rooted prose, tends to overwrite. If you had all the world and time, you could imagine yourself sitting down with an interesting and knowledgeable friend and discussing various aspects of life. All to the good. But let's face it: you're not a participant in this "discussion." You are an audience member. You have no input and are at the mercy of whatever the speaker (Jenkinson) wishes to throw into the mix. If he takes a left turn and you want to go right, too bad. For example, he announces that he will tell a story. Fine. But more than 29 lines later he is still telling you what a story is, what it stands for, how it changes, matters and expresses. In delightful prose, perhaps, but somewhat off the point of the book. Here is a lovely part of it, though: " . . . stories that can only be told when the land sleeps under snow, when the saplings snap, when the night sky is so blue black that the stars are like ragged holes dug through from the other side to let the light of the Other World into this one for a time." See what I mean? Glorious, but off the mark.Second, he tends to objectify medical personnel, using them to make his point without regard to their humanity. Perhaps he doesn't mean to do this, but it comes across that way.Third, somebody, either Jenkinson or someone at North Atlantic Books made the really stupid decision to print the book in small, gray print. I can't tell you how difficult it is to read! My eyes were aching and watering after 25 pages. These two choices do a disservice to the writer and to the publisher because if I saw this book in a bookstore I would reluctantly put it back on the shelf. How bright was it of someone to choose such light gray color and tiny print in a book whose primary market, it seems to me, is the elderly? It's like serving a gourmet meal on chipped, cracked and dirty plates. But if you think you can stand the eyestrain, a little verbosity and haranguing, you will be rewarded with well-considered writing, interesting perspectives, a philosophical bent and knowledge about the "end times" that await us all.

Throughout his life, James Boswell struggled to fashion a clear account of himself, but try as he might, he could not reconcile the truths of his era with those of his religious upbringing. Boswell’s Enlightenment examines the conflicting credos of reason and faith, progress and tradition that pulled Boswell, like so many eighteenth-century Europeans, in opposing directions. In the end, the life of the man best known for writing Samuel Johnson’s biography was something of a patchwork affair. As Johnson himself understood: “That creature was its own tormentor, and I believe its name was BOSWELL.”

Few periods in Boswell’s life better crystallize this internal turmoil than 1763–1765, the years of his Grand Tour and the focus of Robert Zaretsky’s thrilling intellectual adventure. From the moment Boswell sailed for Holland from the port of Harwich, leaving behind on the beach his newly made friend Dr. Johnson, to his return to Dover from Calais a year and a half later, the young Scot was intent on not just touring historic and religious sites but also canvassing the views of the greatest thinkers of the age. In his relentless quizzing of Voltaire and Rousseau, Hume and Johnson, Paoli and Wilkes on topics concerning faith, the soul, and death, he was not merely a celebrity-seeker but―for want of a better term―a truth-seeker. Zaretsky reveals a life more complex and compelling than suggested by the label “Johnson’s biographer,” and one that 250 years later registers our own variations of mind.

Boswell's Enlightenment, by Robert Zaretsky

Review The key theme of Robert Zaretsky’s splendid new book on James Boswell is that his life was a roaming drama of self-discovery… Boswell’s Enlightenment is thus about the art of living. Boswell’s interest for the historian lies not with the originality of his thought―there was none―but as an example of someone who struggled, Zaretsky shows, ‘to bend his person to certain philosophical ends.’ Hume, Johnson, Rousseau and Voltaire were asked to help him divine what those ends might be. Zaretsky’s elegantly written book, then, stands alongside a growing literature―including the works of Pierre Hadot (Philosophy as a Way of Life) and Alexander Nehemas (The Art of Living)–that renders the history of philosophy not as an academic pursuit, but as something wrought in pursuit of the common good. (Gavin Jacobson Times Literary Supplement 2015-10-09)Zaretsky’s buoyant and rigorous ‘intellectual adventure’ is a successful attempt to place the writer within the broad tapestry of the European Enlightenment…In Zaretsky’s book, we see the effect of one great mind upon another, again and again, and thus we see the evolution of Boswell’s dazzling prose style. (Andrew O’Hagan New York Review of Books 2015-06-04)Enthralling…Boswell’s Enlightenment proves that the world’s greatest biographer makes a fascinating subject in his own right. (Josh Emmons Los Angeles Review of Books 2015-05-13)During his life, Boswell was known more for his associations than for his accomplishments, but it’s time, historian Robert Zaretsky thinks, to give him his moment in the spotlight…Zaretsky’s telling is as much an intellectual history as it is a coming-of-age tale, though one gets the sense that Boswell never quite came of age… Zaretsky’s account of this conflicted man is a sympathetic, fluid, and very enjoyable read. We see a man in search not so much of wisdom as of seekers of wisdom. As much as he tried, Boswell never became an intellectual equal with the great thinkers of his day, but as an observer of them (and of himself) he had no peer. (David Nolan First Things 2015-08-01)Entertaining… [Zaretsky] put[s] Boswell forward as, among other things, a harbinger of our own day, a living symbol of a transition from the high-minded ideals of a more pure intellectual world to the self-centered obsessions of day-to-day reality. (Steven Donoghue Christian Science Monitor 2015-03-25)Engaging…Boswell’s Enlightenment is a readable, smart, accessible introduction to a self-absorbed but likable young man who reminds us the Age of Enlightenment was also the Age of Exuberance. (Fritz Lanham Houston Chronicle 2015-04-11)James Boswell, best known as Samuel Johnson’s biographer, was a lifelong seeker of truth. He struggled to put together his Calvinist religious heritage with the insights and perspectives of the Enlightenment. From 1763 to 1765 he toured Europe not just to see the historic sites but to encounter some of its greatest living thinkers, among them Rousseau and Voltaire. Zaretsky adroitly chronicles Boswell’s intellectual journey and introduces the reader to the varieties of 18th-century Enlightenment. Boswell’s struggles remain with us―over the relationship between faith and reason, the nature of human liberty and equality, the duties of citizenship, the role and limits of the state, and what constitutes the good life. (Christian Century 2015-03-20)Zaretsky believes Boswell was an exceptional talent, notwithstanding his weaknesses, and certainly worthy of our attention. Glossing several periods of Boswell’s life but closely examining his grand tour of the Continent (1763-1765), Zaretsky elevates Boswell’s station, repairs Boswell’s literary reputation, and corrects a longstanding underestimation, calling attention to his complicated and curious relationship to the Enlightenment, a movement or milieu that engulfed him without necessarily defining him…Bristling with the animated, ambulatory prose of the old style of literary and historical criticism, the kind that English professors disdain but educated readers enjoy and appreciate. (Allen Mendenhall Liberty Unbound 2015-06-22)James Boswell (1740‐1795) comes to life in Zaretsky’s recounting of his European grand tour in the mid‐18th‐century… Zaretsky introduces the Enlightenment greats who taught and molded Boswell. The vast store of knowledge our traveler absorbed in so few years makes for truly enlightening reading… This wonderful rendering of Boswell digs deep into his probing, enquiring life and the fast friends he made at every turn. (Kirkus Reviews (starred review) 2015-01-01)This sparkling work is a partial biography of one of the 18th century’s most arresting figures―someone often taken to be emblematic of that intellectually critical era. Zaretsky sees James Boswell―known for ‘his oddness, his youth, and his melancholy’―as embodying the Enlightenment’s many conflicting currents and torn by them all. Seeking to escape from conflicts between the flesh and Protestant religiosity, and between the ancient and modern, the young Scot sought and gained the acquaintance and counsel, much of it unsettling to him, of some of the age’s great figures―Samuel Johnson, Voltaire, Rousseau, David Hume, John Wilkes, and Pascal Paoli―in a famous two-year tour of the Continent. Boswell’s earnest search for answers to life’s bewildering puzzles continues to fascinate. Zaretsky brilliantly, sometimes movingly, adds to that fascination… So convincing are Zaretsky’s observations, so sure his touch. (Publishers Weekly 2015-01-26)In this beautifully written account, Robert Zaretsky plays Boswell to Boswell, as the young Scot goes in search of Europe’s great thinkers―and in the process discovers his own calling. Part biography, part history of ideas, it makes for a thrilling intellectual journey. (James Shapiro, Columbia University)Zaretsky has written an engrossing study of James Boswell, the renowned biographer of Samuel Johnson and the equally famous diarist…There must have been something irresistible about Boswell’s personality for such a young man to have been able to secure the attentions of these men, not to mention the close friendship of literary titan Samuel Johnson. A fascinating character study, Boswell’s Enlightenment helps readers understand what that something was. It is also the story of Boswell’s struggle to reconcile his strict Calvinist upbringing with the ideas of the Enlightenment and with his tempestuous impulses and literary ambition. (J. Hoffman Choice 2015-09-01)Robert Zaretsky’s excellent book provides a wealth of information about Enlightenment thought, all of it brought to life in the mind and imagination of that irrepressible Scot, James Boswell…Boswell’s Enlightenment is also the reader’s enlightenment. The book surveys the major ideas of this period’s thinkers, from luminaries like Johnson and Hume, Voltaire and Rousseau, to somewhat lesser lights like Adam Smith and Hugh Blair, Montesquieu and Diderot…The book deserves the highest praise. (D. T. Siebert The Key Reporter 2015-12-02)

Frederick Pottle set . There is no exaggerating the fascination of his character, his candor in his writings and in his diaries is, I think, not to be equaled in English. Unlike the writers of the 20th century confessional school, Boswell is totally unstudied. Having read nearly all that he wrote, I feel as if I know him better than most friends and a lot of family. His life problems are common to us all, family, money, spouse, career and sex. I would only limit it by saying it is the life of a male, not a female. In politics, he was embarrassingly sycophantic re: the royals and much of the aristocracy, yet he had a strong, almost radical, empathy for the ordinary person, as evinced in his legal defense of the poor and mistreated. Should there be anyone considering this book who has not read deeply in Boswell, go to it. Again, the clarity of his self revelation is almost unbelievable. The theme of this study is that Boswell, in addition to a domineering jerk of a father, a long suffering wife, a serious drinking problem, guilt about his children, general inferiority-complex (thanks, Dad) and a wastrel’s spending habits, suffered deeply from intellectual angst occasioned by his Scot/Calvinist “faith” and the modern ideas blooming in the enlightenment, many of whose key figures he ardently courted. Screwed Voltaire’s mistress (partner) whilst escorting her to England and muscled in on Hume’s dying days with a couple bottles of wine, for instance. Johnson, by the way, suffered the same angst, tho an Anglican. For those already well read in Boswell beyond the Life of Johnson, this book will seem slight. Additionally to being rather superficial on Boswell, the supporting cast - Hume, Voltaire, etc. - are sketchily drawn. And one could hardly expect a grounding on the thought of them from such a book, of course. On the other hand, if you have read and enjoyed the Life And are looking for a little more information on Boswell, this is a good place to start. It is an easy and quick read. I’d repeat, however, that the best place to encounter Boswell is in the journals themselves. Read one, say the London Journal, and you may be hooked. They’re all available new or used at reasonable prices on Amazon or Addall.

Inspired Travels with Boswell By George Cotkin Robert Zaretsky moves James Boswell out from under the brilliant shadow of Samuel Johnson and places him at the heart of the Enlightenment. Boswell was a fascinating character, traveling about Europe and literally knocking unannounced on the doors of the famous, Hume, Rousseau, Voltaire, and many others. Boswell was a man of depths and contradictions, as Zaretsky expertly demonstrates, drilled in Calvinism as youth but wandering around Europe in search of sin; upholding a religious sensibility but flirting deeply with doubt; living a full life yet fretting constantly about death. While Zaretsky wisely does not make the case for Boswell as a major Enlightenment figure, he employs him brilliantly to tease forth the varieties of the Enlightenment experience. Readers will find Zaretsky's prose elegant and his discussions of ideas nicely accessible without sacrificing anything. As a study of a fascinating fellow and of the reach of the Enlightenment, this book is unparalleled.

Poorly written but entertaining By Jeffrey Rubard James Boswell -- the 18th century Scots writer most famous for his immense biography of his friend Samuel Johnson -- is someone whose attitudes and observations still speak to our present. Unfortunately, Romance language professor Robert Zaretsky tries too hard to make Boswell contemporary: he doesn't quite describe Rousseau's common-law wife Therese Levasseur as "swiping right" for Boswell, but that's about the feel of his book *Boswell's Enlightenment*.Since Zaretsky is unsure of his audience, there is much amateurish stage-setting regarding 18th century Britain and not enough information about the book's main topic, the youthful Boswell's "grand tour" of Europe which had him meeting up with the famous *lumieres* Voltaire and Rousseau. Anglophiles who have read the *Life of Johnson* cover to cover (it takes a while) would still not know about the encounters Boswell had with the Continental elites, and the background on 18th-century continental Europe (as well as the Corsican General Paoli, who figures fairly prominently in Boswell's book) is valuable, but the treatment of what we have been instructed to call the "British Enlightenment" is ham-handed: Johnson is present as comic relief only, presented as a distant second in influence on Boswell to the more colorful John Wilkes. Discussion of the Scots and British character of that time is halting at best, and at the end of the book we still have not been given a convincing explanation of why Boswell was famous in the first place. As a "special study" it's okay; as a chronicle of a great literary figure and his times it leaves much to be desired.
