The novel is partly an origin story, with a huge cast of characters swarming around - many of whom become the central figures of later novels in the series - and partly an account of the December 1851 coup d'état that created the French Second Empire under Napoleon III as experienced in a large provincial town in southern France.

The Fortune of the Rougons (illustrated), by Emile Zola (illustrated)

About the Author ?mile Zola was a French writer who is recognized as an exemplar of literary naturalism and for his contributions to the development of theatrical naturalism. Zola s best-known literary works include the twenty-volume Les Rougon-Macquart, an epic work that examined the influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution on French society through the experiences of two families, the Rougons and the Macquarts. Other remarkable works by Zola include Contes ? Ninon, Les Myst?res de Marseille, and Th?r?se Raquin.

In addition to his literary contributions, Zola played a key role in the Dreyfus Affair of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His newspaper article J Accuse accused the highest levels of the French military and government of obstruction of justice and anti-semitism, for which he was convicted of libel in 1898. After a brief period of exile in England, Zola returned to France where he died in 1902. ?mile Zola is buried in the Panth?on alongside other esteemed literary figures Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas.

By William Shriver Over and over, I keep seeing reviews of these novels that misidentify the order in which they're meant to be read. (For example, "HIS EXCELLENCY, the sixth novel of the series . . . .")In his introduction to the 20th and final novel (DOCTOR PASCAL), Zola specified the order he intended the series to be read, and it differs greatly from the order in which the books were written. So, now that you're on the first of twenty, make a note of the LOGICAL order of the books, and you will enjoy them much more:1)La Fortune des Rougon (tr. THE FORTUNE OF THE ROUGONS); 2) Son Excellence Eugene Rougon (tr. HIS EXCELLENCY or CLORINDA); 3) La Curée (tr. THE KILL); 4) L'Argent (tr. MONEY); 5) La Rève (tr. THE DREAM); 6) La Conquête de Plassans (tr. THE CONQUEST OF PLASSANS or A PRIEST IN THE HOUSE); 7) Pot-Bouille (tr. POT LUCK, PIPING HOT!, RESTLESS HOUSE or LESSON IN LOVE); 8) Au Bonheur des Dames (tr. THE LADIES' PARADISE or THE LADIES' DELIGHT); 9) La Faute de l'Abbé Mouret (tr. ABBE MOURET'S TRANSGRESSION); 10) Une Page d'amour (tr. A LOVE EPISODE); 11) Le Ventre de Paris (tr. THE BELLY OF PARIS or THE FAT AND THE THIN); 12) La Joie de vivre (tr. THE JOY OF LIFE, HOW JOLLY LIFE IS! or ZEST FOR LIFE); 13) L'Assommoir; 14) L'Oeuvre (tr. THE MASTERPIECE or HIS MASTERPIECE); 15) La Bête Humaine (tr. THE BEAST WITHIN or THE HUMAN BEAST); 16) Germinal; 17) Nana; 18) La Terre (tr. THE EARTH or THE SOIL); 19) La Débâcle (tr. THE DOWNFALL); and, 20) Le Docteur Pascal (tr. DOCTOR PASCAL).Beginning with LA FORTUNE, the books proceed more-or-less according to the family tree, from the Rougons to the Macquarts, and chronologically across the generations. Following LA FORTUNE, SON EXCELLENCE is about the Second Empire's tendency toward totalitarianism, as embodied in Eugene, the eldest son of Pierre Rougon. It makes sense to read it immediately following LA FORTUNE. If you read it as the sixth book, you will have first read about the second son's exploitative and decadent Parisian life. You will have also read a book that summarizes the entire first half of the series in its theme of haves and have-nots, and two books about the struggles between secularism and clergy in a provincial town, shown from different sides of the issue. Likewise, NANA will contain much that will elude you if you read it in the ninth position instead of the seventeenth, where it belongs. This series of novels is a very rewarding reading experience, the type of endeavor like reading Proust that will stay with you your entire life. Eleven of these are in the public domain, available for download for whatever e-book reader you might have. (Google "free kindle books" and you'll find a wealth of free literature.) Those that aren't available in the Mondial editions are available in the Oxford World's Classics series. And in case you were wondering, if this were a single novel, it would be 6,680 pages long. C'est pas possible!

Like all the books in the series, this one stands alone as a self-contained novel. It will be especially enjoyable, however, to those who have read some of the other books in this series, as many of the characters introduced in this book go on to "star" in their own novels. The story takes place in the fictional town of Plassans, based on Zola's hometown of Aix-en-Provence. Zola begins the book by sketching the layout of the town, and its history, and then goes on to outline the first three generations of the Rougon-Macquart family tree. Because of the many characters introduced in this novel, there is no one main protagonist, but rather a series of intertwining story lines. These story lines range in tone from a biting cynical realism to an almost Victor Hugo-esque romanticism. The book takes place at the time of the coup d'etat in Paris which began the Second Empire under Napoleon III. At that time, various factions were competing for the throne of France--the Royalists, the Republicans, the Bonapartists. The citizens of Plassans, who only receive news from Paris through second-hand rumors, are choosing which side they are on as they await the outcome of the political upheaval in the capital. Their choices are based not so much on their political convictions, but rather on who they think will end up victorious. Everyone wants to be on the winning side of the battle so they can reap the political, financial, and social rewards once the smoke clears. What results is an in-depth study of the motivations of several fascinating characters, and a powerful meditation on ambition. How far is one willing to go to secure greater wealth and status for himself and his family? Is there a place for selfless conviction or heroism in a society based on such selfish concerns? Zola tackles these serious issues, while managing to inject a bit of humor into the proceedings as well. Fans of Zola's better-known works will certainly enjoy this novel, but it can also be read and appreciated by those who are not familiar with Zola's work at all. It is a shame that it has been out of print for so long; fortunately it is available in ebook format, free on several web sites.

The vast panorama of the Rougon-Macquart family and their illegitimate children parallels Guiding Light or Dynasty. However, what makes this novel art as opposed to vapid entertainment is the theme of heredity and - more importantly - his social criticism.Almost the entire family is corrupted by the desire for wealth without the need for talent or ability. Interestingly, the novel is suggestive that this family springs from a line plagued by insanity. Seems there's a comment there! The only two heroic characters are Marie and Silvere. Their romance and sacrafice are especially poignant in the face of the people who actually come out on top. Tracing the rise of the Rougons, it is apparent Zola wishes to illustrate that ideals are wonderful but ultimately it's connections and timing that propel you to the top. This single point defines the difference between Zola and his opposites, the Romanticist writers who were grand believers in moral integrity and individuality. The all consuming urge to attain position without effort corrupts these characters into amoralists who pick sides in the turbulent political times, not based on ideals or convictions, but on how they can best capitalize and profit. What is especially sad is that none of these characters have any especial plans for utilizing their prosperity. They simply want it so they can sit and do nothing. They are as intellectually empty and they are morally bankrupt. This is an excellent translation and the text is very easy to read (which is a compliment both to Zola and the translator). The tapestry woven by Zola is fascinating, even as you shake your head at the depravity of most of the characters. My only criticism of Zola in this book is that he relies too heavily on exposition as opposed to characterization. However, he's covering a lot of ground here and the scope of the family he outlines is pretty vast for such a relatively short book.Bottom line, I enjoyed reading it. For people who enjoy literature, this is a thinking man's tawdry soap opera.

“When there is no enemy within, the enemies outside cannot hurt you.” ~African Proverb Do you ever look at people who are successful, healthy and happy and wonder what their secret is? Why you can't be like that? After more than a decade long struggle with emotional eating, depression, and low self-esteem, I realized that the reason I couldn't be happy like the people I envied was that I didn't love myself. For me, developing self-love has been profoundly healing. I can hardly believe how effortless it has been for me to quit overeating, exercise daily, attract a loving relationship, and have the career of my dreams. Nowadays, people come to me for counseling, convinced that they’re hopeless. There's no way they can learn how to unconditionally love themselves! I meet people who say they envy that I love myself, since they’re too messed up, worthless, unattractive etc. to be loved. The reasons they believe this vary greatly, but the common ground is that they were made to feel unlovable, unaccepted or worthless in the past and feel too low to recover. You may recognize yourself in the following stories:

  • How can I love my fat body? I hate it.
  • I was abused as a child and told I deserved it.
  • I do so much to please others and they do nothing in return.
  • My dad said I wasn’t smart enough to amount to anything so why try.
  • I’ve been put down by my family since childhood. It’s too late to change that low opinion I’ve had drummed into my head.
  • My first real love criticized me non-stop and I can’t let go of feeling I’m not good enough to be loved.
These messages leave a deep imprint and you probably developed habits, automatic responses of the mind, that correspond "I'm unlovable" "I don't matter" to yourself and the outside world. You may be in the habit of eating too much junk food when you feel bad, criticizing the things you do wrong, ignoring your positive assets, always saying yes to others, or staying with people who treat you poorly. You deserve so much better! Now, it's true that these habits can't be changed overnight, but with patience and consistency you can reprogram yourself and develop true unconditional love and acceptance for yourself, as the imperfect person you (we all!) are. Even if you can't meet the expectations of others on a daily basis, don't excel at anything or don't look like a Victoria's Secret model. Everyone should be treated with respect, understanding, love and acceptance. Including YOU. Don't fall for the myth that self-love is selfish; it's not. In the end, the more you love and take care of yourself, the more you will have to give others. In this guide "The 7 Habits of Self-Loving People" I will help you to:
  • Develop new habits that will significantly boost your feelings and actions of self-love on a daily base
  • Realize the importance of taking good care of yourself and your body, and how to bring this in practice
  • Let go of self-talk, behaviors, things and people that do not serve you
  • Understand why it's so important to forgive yourself and not feel guilty about your mistakes
  • Become aware of who you really are, how you feel and what you need
  • ..and much more inside!
Take the first step towards learning how to love yourself unconditionally today! By By Callie As I began reading this book I had a serious heart issue that required an ambulance and a trip to the E.R.(both were first timers for me). I had been running on fumes for so long, caring for everyone, but myself! When I was released from the hospital a few days later, the first words out of my husband's mouth were, "You have to start taking care of you babe!"- This book was perfect timing! If you are like me, a caretaker of spouse, children, parents...basically thinking you can save the world- you're probably burned out. This book gives you practical, easy changes for self-assessing, which is mandatory for people who give too much and see very little reciprocity. Habit four-Boundaries was my favorite, it's where I fail. It helped me to prioritize what I needed to do and to be successful at it. This is a simple but practical guide that speaks to everyone on loving yourself and others in a positive, non-destructive way. She ties all seven habits together seamlessly making it easy for me to implement them into my life on a daily basis. This is a book I would definitely recommend to my family and friends, especially my adult children.

By Allexandria In this deep and reflective book, Ingrid urges us to pay attention to what we truly need – which can never be found in a supermarket. She shares her powerful eating guidelines and goes deep into the connection between our physical hungers and our spiritual needs. I literally could write an entire post with just quotes of the book – her words are that powerful. The great thing about this self-love book is that it revealed a point of view that is so different from the one we currently have that our walls of self-loathing and self-doubt literally collapse through the sheer power of words. And if you want to know more about how great this book is, I really encourage you to read this book

When you have love for yourself then you have respect in yourself too. Which is important as well. When you respect yourself you will feel complete and you will feel that you can conquer everything. Because you give importance to yourself people will respect you in return. Accepting yourself can be a way of a good and positive life, because you know your limits and you know your worth. When you love yourself no one can use you to harm you, because nobody knows the real you but you, No one can use your flaws against you because you already accepted yourself. So life would better. Will surely recommend this book to everyone.

To escape a brutal life on the Liverpool docks, a boy runs away to sea Arthur Fearon is nearly thirteen, and in the eyes of the law, that makes him a man. He wants to study to become a chemist, but his family cannot afford for him to continue school. The thought of a life working the docks makes Fearon break down in front of his classmates, but there is no time to cry. This boy has to get to work.   The docks are hellish, and Fearon’s first day is his last. He hops a steamer to Alexandria, looking for a better life on the sea, but everywhere he goes, he finds cruelty, vice, and the crushing weight of adulthood. He will not be a man for long.   The subject of an infamous 1930s obscenity trial, this is the original, unexpurgated text of James Hanley’s landmark novel: an unflinching examination of child labor and a timeless tale of adulthood gained too soon.

Boy: A Novel, by James Hanley

About the Author James Hanley was born in Liverpool to Irish immigrants and left school at an early age to become a sailor. His experiences at sea informed many of his works, including Boy, a novel so controversial that it was only published in a limited, expurgated edition, and subsequently tried for obscenity. Unfairly neglected during his lifetime, only recently has this original, uncompromising novelist started to be reappraised as one of the finest English writers of the 20th century.

O'Brien's nautical series described the hundreds of boys who went to sea to meet basic needs such as eating and a place to sleep. They died often in his works. Sexual harassment is alluded to but not often. Dickens is noted for his bleak portrayal of the lower classes, but the plight of the poor in this novel are even more extreme. I think that what I appreciated the most was the how callus a life could be snuffed out. It is a sad commentary on those times. But then today, we have all the horror stories from around the world of child soldiers, child sex workers, war refugees in the hundreds of thousands. So perhaps we haven't come very far.Mr. B

Set in Liverpool in a depressed time probably in the 1920's and not without fault this is a book which should have a wider readership. The book's notoriety is sadly a reflection of Political Correctness albeit a 1930's version of what is sexually acceptable in print. In the 21st C it is difficult to note which passages were not acceptable.James Hanley very realistically portrays an account of a boy (Arthur Fearon) who stows away with dreams of a new world. His decision to runaway results from his parent's decision that he give up his education to bring in much needed income, a dilemma not often faced today. To some the narrative may seem bleak but unlike most bleak narratives "Boy" is an inspiring read as it follows the struggles of an intelligent 13 year old boy yearning to be accepted in an unfriendly man's world but increasingly feeling isolated and friendless.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. a life, nasty, brutal and short By Mr. D. P. Jay This book charts the short and brutish life of a boy forced out of school and into the unforgiving world of work. Escape—in the form of stowing away on a ship—only deepens his exposure to the squalor and brutality that men are capable of, and when he arrives in Alexandria he learns there are some things that one can't run away from.In Boy (1931) young Fearon’s isolation and suffering arise because no one cares for him. The story of Boy is "sordid and horrible". The young protagonist’s parents are only interested in the wages he can earn, and encourage him to leave school as soon as possible. It starts off with him getting the cane and the teacher telling him that he’s worthless, not worth bothering with. And that’s the message he gets throughout his short, tragic life. His parents claim that ‘We know what’s best for our children.’ But they don’t. And his first job involves, literally, shovelling s***.Likewise society is unconcerned about the harsh, unhealthy conditions he endures cleaning ships’ boilers. Then, when he goes to sea, he is sexually abused by his fellow seamen. Finally, when young Fearon is dying in agony from a venereal disease caught in a Cairo brothel, his Captain smothers him. When I was a choirboy in a seaside town, we often heard about the Missions to seamen (whose title always got us smirking – they have changed their name of ‘Mission to Seafarers’ now.) I now realise why their work is needed – providing somewhere to relax, writing letters for the illiterate and being a home from home miles away.Narrated in unflinching language that is both visceral and acute in its observational power, Boy is a shocking book that stays in the mind long after it is read. Unfairly neglected during his lifetime, only recently has this original, uncompromising novelist started to be reappraised as among the finest novelists writing in English in the 20th century. The author (1897 –1985) was a British novelist, short story writer, and playwright of Irish descent. He wrote a number of novels and short stories about seamen and their families. This included Boy (1931), which was the subject of a notorious obscenity trail. Novelist Sir Hugh Walpole condemned the work and ripped up a copy in a bookshop in protest. 100 copies were burnt publicly. But the book became a cause célèbre for other writers who recognised his talent. E M Forster, William Faulkner and, more recently, Anthony Burgess rallied to support it. He explained: One of the causes of neglect in his lifetime was a kind of double solitariness: he belonged to no literary school, and he cherished the self-elected condition of a recluse. He also tells how: The main voice of middle-class condemnation was that of Sir Hugh Walpole, a once respected popular novelist, knighted for services to what the middle class thought of as literature but now nearly forgotten: "It is so unpleasant and ugly, both in narration and incident, that I wonder the printers did not go on strike while printing it." Walpole was said to have torn up a copy publicly in a London bookshop. Boy became a cause celebre in the fight against Britain's Sedition Act, with E.M. Forster addressing the International Congress of Writers in Paris in 1935 in eloquent endorsement of the book and fierce denunciation of official squeamishness.Boy was reprinted in 1931, and 1932, when an American first edition was also published. Then, when it was reprinted in 1934, in a cheap (second) edition with a "scantily dressed" belly dancer on its cover, Boy was prosecuted for obscenity. The court case followed a complaint to the police in Bury, near Manchester. The prosecution suggested that the cover of the book and extracts from reviews just inside were most suggestive, and that the purpose was to pollute young people's minds". Boriswood "were advised that, owing to the book's reference to 'intimacy between members of the male sex', any defence against prosecution was futile'". In March 1935 Boriswood pleaded guilty of "uttering and publishing an obscene libel" and paid a substantial fine. But it’s fairly tame, merely using phrases like ‘interfering with…’It is not surprising that Hanley should show an interest in extreme situations, given his early awareness of the precariousness of life in the working class world that he came from. Hanley would also have sensed, very early in his life, that individual lives of the working poor and their children was of little value in a modern industrial city like Liverpool. All this encouraged his exploration not only of working class life but also the emotional life of characters on the periphery of society. Some readers have assumed that the horrors Boy depicts were experienced first-hand by the author, although there is no evidence for this; indeed, Hanley's son Liam remembers his father laughing at such suggestions and dismissing them as "silly." But the book is not without autobiographical elements: Hanley did embark on his first sea voyage when he was the same age as Fearon, although that ship was bound for the United States rather than the Middle East, and unlike the principal character of Boy Hanley actively wanted to leave school early and looked forward to taking up shipboard work. Some of the events of Fearon's journey, such as the details of his day-to-day duties and the death of a sailor after a few days, resonate closely with the account Hanley gives of his own maiden trip in his autobiography, Broken Water (1937). Furthermore, in the essay ‘Oddfish’ (published in Don Quixote Drowned, 1953), Hanley recalls that the novel's ending was inspired by a conversation between a group of sailors that he overheard and was horrified by, some years later in his shipboard career.

By Sydney Hammons Eloquently crafted, "Heartbeat" is a charming and sweet story about a couple's journey through courtship and marriage set amidst life during post World-War II and the "Baby-Boomer" generation's unique perspective on their place in history. Interwoven are themes regarding the advent of rock-and-roll music, automobiles and the definition of "rich" and "poor", all set against the backdrop of rural midwestern life in the 50's and 60's. Boomers will appreciate being harkened back to a simpler time; the sights, sounds, and pervasive attitudes all carried out under the Cold War realities of the day. For those outside the Boomer generation, it is a curious peek at the formative years of a generation that has had a profound effect on American civil society. Precise, smooth and lyrical, "Heartbeat" is a book that all ages can appreciate.

Curnutt I received a notification from Crossway Books last week that they had just released their latest ESV Bible and that it was Students Study Bible version. I immediately ordered one since I work with some college students and young adults just starting their careers (I use to be the Youth Pastor at our church).I am very pleased with this new version of the ESV Study Bible. In addition to the regular study notes and topics that are included, along with the Outlines and Introductions to each book of the Bible there are several new features. In the Student Study Bible they have included 120 new Bible character profiles. These profiles are short (just a few paragraphs each) but they are well done and help the student get a thumbnail sketch of important characters of the Bible. There are also 900 New 'Did You Know" facts that are listed throughout the Bible. An example from page 34 is the "Did you Know" fact about "Cherubim (Genesis 3:24) are angels who guard holy places. They appear in various places in the Bible. 'Cherubim' is the Hebrew plural form of 'cherub'." These little facts help a student to come to an understand about a term that they might not be familiar with if they are new to Bible reading. Also included in the Bible are the plan of salvation and many topics that will help a new Christian navigate their way to a better understanding of the Bible. The color maps are well done and give just the right information when needed to go along with stories that the student is reading. Then there are the regular notes (commentary) at the bottom of each page that give the students information regarding the text that they are reading. There is also a great concordance in the back that is well done and will help students to search out topics that they are interested in.Finally, all of this in the Bible you purchase your student plus an authentication code that will allow them to register with ESV.org so that they will have full access to the ESV Study Bible online as well as the printed edition they have. Today's students are so computer oriented that you will find that many of the students will become so adept at using the online Bible that they won't have to carry their study Bible with them, instead they can sit down in an internet cafe or at a library and sign on and start reading and studying anywhere.I think that Crossway Books has done a great job in putting this Bible together and just when you thought, how can they improve on the ESV Study Bible, well they do it with the Student Version. So, thank you Crossway for developing this new study tool for students.Enjoy and God bless!

"Student" in the title is a superfluous repetition of the word "Study" and gave the absolutely wrong impression that it was going to be a dumbed down version of the regular ESV Study Bible. It gives a lot more meat up front. Footnotes for OCDs are reduced to a microscopic font size: I like reading the enlightening commentary without having to look at more subtitles, like some boring academic thesis.Admire the quality of the pages, completely legible print, binding and high quality of manufacture and layout, and surprise - it is made in the USA. The print is much darker and pleasant to read than more expensive outsourced bibles. Much has been said about the green highlighted "Did you know" questions. They are scattered all over this bible, and generously in the Old Testament, so it is hard to fall asleep on the OT. Now I "Know" how large Israel was during the time of King Solomon, and I was surprised Israel covered a lot of countries now at loggerheads with modern day Israel. There are profiles of people in yellow highlighted boxes, notes in blue, lists in mauve, maps and illustrations make this bible a tasteful technicolor affair. I bought this bible for the 900 "Did you know" (which would itself have merited the purchase) but I got a lot more with this "Student" bible than with my plethora of other ESV study bibles. This unfortunately titled product could actually supersede all other ESV study bibles in popularity in future. No adult prefers carrying a bible titled "Student", which implies incompleteness and lower status. It is one thing to be meek, but quite another to flaunt your meekness. This bible should be re-titled "Essential" Study Bible, or "Basic" Study Bible. There is nothing "junior" about this bible. Are we not all still students, whatever bible we use? I can foresee a larger print version, or even a waterproof one in future. Other than the unfortunate use of "Student", this is really a masterclass of a study bible. On another thread, it bodes well for the US economy if it can produce such a high quality bible with so many features at such a highly competitive price.

Crossway has been kind enough to provide me with a review copy (as will be stated below), and I now see why they were so excited about this release.Filled with 12,000 study notes, introductions and timelines in each book of the Bible, 15 topic based articles, almost 900 new "did you know" facts, and 120 new Bible character profiles, we as readers are empowered to grasp the text and wrestle with themes like never before.Going into it, I knew I would be provided some resources and context, but I didn't realize the extent of it all until I started diving into studies on particular texts. The verse cross-references, facts, and study notes truly help develop the text and the themes/contexts already being developed.Another thing that I really enjoyed was that, though many theological concepts and topics are addressed, it never felt like I was given information that was so far over my head I would never understand it. The student study bible not only provides us the resources, but it's provided in a way that easy to hold onto, and relevant to understand. One last area of discussion I wanted to point out is the topic-based articles towards the end of the book. These address important Christian Doctrines to know and understand, and even range in topic from Who is God, to How to Apply the Bible in Everyday Life. You will truly feel equipped to dive into the Word of God like never before, and the automatic access to ESVBible.org is definitely a useful supplement to our study. The Bible I received absolutely did not disappoint and now I see what the hype is all about. I would definitely recommend this Bible to any who are looking to further their knowledge of God's word, wish to study various topics, and hear popular theologians and pastors exegete on the word of God in the provided study notes (which definitely help!).----A complimentary copy of this (Bible) was provided for review purposes by the Crossway Publishing. I was not required to post a positive review and the views expressed in this review are my own.
