About the Author Madeleine Mysko is the author of a previous novel, Bringing Vincent Home, for which she received an Individual Artist Grant from the State of Maryland. Her fiction, poetry, and essays have been published widely in journals. A teacher of creative writing for many years, she presently serves on the editorial board of The American Journal of Nursing. She lives in Towson, Maryland, with her husband, John Sheehan.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Small Publisher's Coup By abcpoet I couldn't put this novel down! Mysko's handling of three separate family story lines is masterful, so that even though you might know the broad strokes of "what" happened, you may not know why or how, and you're riveted to find out. The reader also anticipates when the three aspects intersect, as they do throughout the book. The beach town setting is vivid, and the emotional repercussions of addiction are movingly conveyed, for instance when Camille attends an Al-Anon meeting and is shocked at the cold way in which a father declines to talk to--or "enable" his son. Nothing is simplified in this nuanced novel, and you finish reading it with respect for the complicated humanity of the characters. I loved, for instance, the cross-generational relationship between Owen and Camille, their courtesies for and second thoughts about each other. The book is well-produced, with crisp type, good paper, a beautiful cover--and not a single typo. This is overall a better book than a great many published by Random House or Norton. Its excellence makes me wish editing at larger publishers could rise to this standard--and gives me hope for the small publishers who aren't in it for the money, but rather for the writing.

Although Stone Harbor Bound explores the lives of three characters, the book belongs to Camille Pickett, a middle-aged nurse who--one year after her alcoholic partner's death--is trying to get her bearings by returning to the summer vacation house her partner so loved. An inveterate caretaker, Camille finds herself involved immediately in the lives of her summer neighbors. This involvement helps her distill, if not resolve, her still-stinging grief, as she recounts and reconsiders her last few years with her troubled lover. As we watch Camille work through her feelings, we learn something about love and forgiveness and vulnerability, and we find affirmation in her growing hope of starting over.

I really enjoyed it.I identified with Bridget, the forgiving Catholic. Bridget certainly bears her crosses in the story, yet she remains optimistic, positive about the future because she has faith that God forgives her every moment.In fact, I thought the title could have been "Forgiveness".That seemed to be the theme, certainly MM hammers it out in those words: "the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins" multiple times in the novel.The Communion of Saints, as MM explains through a character, is the belief in the mystical presence of the angels and saints at every celebration of the eucharist or mass. Those who have died and entered heaven are, by definition, saints. So when I attend mass, my dad, uncles, aunts and everyone else that I pray went to heaven are at mass in a spiritual sense, just as Bridget knew her deceased relatives were with her.This communion brings us back to the theme of her book. Stone Harbor, for Bridget, and later for Camille was heaven. Early in the book on of them mentions that the word "harbor" derives from "haven" which shares roots with "heaven". The word "stone" has reverberations for Christians. Peter is the 'rock'; Christ is the 'cornerstone'. There is the large stone that covers the tomb that must be "rolled away" as in the hymn "roll away the stone."Owen's encounter with Erin and Camille recalls the parable of the "Good Samaritan" and Jesus's answer as to "who is my neighbor." Erin's story also joins families together. Owen and Judy also seem to reflect the parable of the prodigal son.All the frightening events of adult life come together in Stone Harbor. Death, addiction, illness, being the "stranger in a strange land" as Camille and Judy initially are in their joining their respective lovers' families, all are found in the microcosm that is stone harbor. Eventually, all come to reconcile, commune, forgive and find acceptance in Stone Harbor.I also recommend her earlier novel, Bringing Vincent Home.
