About the Author Alan M. Hallene Jr., PhD. is the father of three grown sons, one whom he anticipates reuniting with someday in heaven. While working on The Hope of Heaven, Al was on leave from his teaching position at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. He has also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Iowa, and is President of NorthHill Consulting, LLC. Erin Keeley Marshall is the author of Navigating Route 20-Something (Harvest House 2008) and The Daily God Book (Tyndale House 2009). She spent the early years of her career as an editor at Tyndale House Publishers and has edited and written for several Christian publishing companies throughout the United States. She lives in Arkansas with her husband, Steve, and their two children.

I hadn’t intended to read it all in one sitting, but couldn’t stop myself. The author’s voice is sincere and compelling as he relives the shock of discovering his son’s body following suicide. The raw pain he shares awoke the grief I’d experienced in losing loved ones years earlier. God reached out to this broken parent during his darkest moments and offered him hope and assurance in deeply personal ways—ways that fit his specific needs perfectly. The very knowledge of God’s caring enough to reach out not once, but eight times in just a few minutes will to carry this man through life until his relationship with his son can be restored in heaven.Reading Allen Hallene’s retelling of God’s tenderness brought to mind not only my own losses, but magnified the ways our Lord softened death’s blow for me as I grieved. What a gift to be able to look back and remember things in that light. Without his insight I might never have gained that perspective.Writings centered on suicide are never easy, but Hallene and Marshall have produced a book that turns it on its head— uplifting and hope-filled. It will help ease the heartache of anyone grieving because it focuses not on death itself, but on heaven. This book belongs on everyone’s bookcase as a reminder of God’s loving presence in our time of need.

DiFalco The Hope of Heaven (God's Eight Messages of Assurance to A Grieving Father) by Alan M. Hallene Jr. is a confirmation that God still speaks to us today even in our darkest hour. The author of this true story is brave to share every detail of his son's suicide in order to reach others and spare such a tragedy from occuring to them. Heart wrenching but uplifting, this book is bittersweet and has many powerful messages. At times it is raw and hard to read making the message more remarkable as we realize the pain the Hallene family had to endure in order to recall and share it. I was honored to review this book for the BookLook community in exchange for my views. This book is an excellent resource not only for those who lost loved ones but also is instrumental for those facing depression. All christains would benefit by reading.

Fortunately I have not had to experience any suicide in my life but I have had people close to me make attempts and though I am forever grateful that they didn't succeed I have always been told that if you take your own life you don't go to heaven. This book really made me see death in a different light. Suicide or not this father experienced what I'm sure had to be the most horrific pain in his life and yet he was able to feel some peace. This book not only helped me think more about death and the what happens after but also about being a better Christian and how our faith really does help us in every aspect of our lives. I want to thank the author for sharing his story with us. You and your family will continue to be in my prayers. Christy

A book for student to aid in their calling to missions By Chris Land There are many conferences that happen all over the world and especially hear in the United States. Some conferences happen yearly and every other year. We have Passion, Desiring God, Together for the Gospel, and The Gospel Coalition. Some of these conferences will have a certain theme to them but what one conference that was focused on students. Some of you would say, "Isn't what the Passion conference does?" I am talking about one that focuses on students whose hearts are for the nations. Those who desire to do missions.In December 2013, thousands of student gathered together to be mobilized for missions. To go in places where it is dangerous. To places where it is remote and people don't know who Jesus is. This conference featuring John Piper, Conrad Mbewe, Ricahrd Chin, Mack Stiles, Matt Chandler, Michael Oh, David Platt, Thabiti Anyabwile, Kevin DeYoung, and D.A. Carson is called CROSS, which also happens to be the title of this book.Each chapter is a general session each preacher did during CROSS. Piper addressed the chief end of missions which is the supremacy of God in the joy of all people. DeYoung's chapter was on the five surprising motivations for mission where he addressed the doctrines of grace also known as T.U.L.I.P. which are the five points of Calvinism. I love Mack Stiles' chapter where he expressed if you are called to be a missionary, you must be inspired by the gospel. It does no good for a missionary to go over seas and not love the gospel as they serve the people.One thing this book addresses is that not all Christians are called to be missionaries. Some are called to go while some are called to stay. David Platt addressed that in the conclusion of this book. What is most important is your obedience to God on whether or not you should be in the mission field. When I was in college, I heard a lot about missions. I kept thinking if God wanted me to go. I felt the speakers who I heard kept making me feel guilty that I am not a missionary. Praise be to God, this book did not give that impression and I hope those who heard these messages felt the same.This is great book to give to a student considering missions. I think youth pastors will benefit from it too as well as those in college ministry to equip their people.

Vanegas I am always looking for ways to motivate people, especially the students I teach at an undergraduate level. I have to confess that, despite all my years of teaching, and the countless anecdotal examples I have encountered on motivation (and demotivation) among students from diverse disciplines in the course I teach, I have not been successful in fully understanding motivation. I recently received a free review copy of this book, and I read it from start to finish as soon as I opened it, as it captured my interest immediately. After reading it, I feel that I now have a framework, which offers both enough structure and ample flexibility, for possible approaches I could use to design high impact learning experiences that motivate students (and also myself). I found the book well structured, with a clear flow of ideas, enjoyable to read, and full of opportunities for pause and reflection. For anyone involved in creative activities, in my opinion, this is a book worth exploring.

Food for the creative soul By Marial Shea I was on the bus reading Motivation for Creative People when I felt a tap on my shoulder. “Excuse me,” said the lady in the seat behind, “but what’s that on your Kindle? I’ve been reading over your shoulder, and it looks so interesting.”I gave her the name of Mark’s book and recommended it enthusiastically. I told her I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of this book.I’ve read a LOT of other books on creativity and motivation, so I’m a tough sell. Mark’s book was a pleasant surprise, both for its new ideas and for his fresh synthesis of those basic concepts I thought I already knew. If you’re new to the subject, I think this would be an excellent introduction; but if you’ve been around, you’ll still find lots of meaty ideas to chew on.Best of all, Mark delivers consistently useful insights and suggestions with the promise that “all the solutions offered in the book have been tested with real people facing real challenges.” The tone of the book is congenial and compassionate, even when he’s kicking butt. I felt like I was sitting down with a caring friend. And he illustrates every concept with a story, either from his own creative practice or from public figures or his many and varied coaching clients.Some of my favorite stories are the ones he tells about his own struggles to find his creative path. During his student years, he literally made himself sick trying to force himself into a life of scholarship. This is a guy with a deep understanding of how we sabotage ourselves and put off our own happiness—and, most importantly, how to turn that around.The book shows signs that Mark has not entirely left his scholarly ways behind. How refreshing to encounter a self-help book with a backbone of deep intelligence. He can write equally convincingly about the latest trends in social media AND the creative habits of Shakespeare and Trollope.Mark wields symbols and metaphor like a poet, not surprising given that he is also a published poet. I liked his use of the pinwheel as a symbol for his four principles of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic, social and personal. “The promise of the pinwheel,” he says, “is to get you out of black-and-white thinking. It’s not a case of creativity versus money, or following your heart versus following the crowd. It’s about how to incorporate all four types of motivation in your career, and make them fuse together with joy.”I was coached by Mark briefly, over a year and a half ago, and not a day goes by when I don’t draw from what he taught me. The guy’s got the goods—and now readers, too, can benefit from his wisdom.Oh, and I’ll just add that, after working for years as a book editor, I was delighted to read a self-published book without spotting a single error! Thanks to the author for respecting his readers enough to get his book properly edited.

If you feel stuck, hopeless, discouraged and confused, this is definitely the book for you! Motivation is not this abstract thing that happens to you, it is something that you can put into action and this book is showing you how and why. It will bring clarity and give you specific steps to uncover what area you are stuck with and how you can get back on track. It is also about your values and how this relates to your motivation, how to identify them and build upon them. It makes you take a close look on how you work and how you can work for you, instead of against you. What really gave me clarity, were the different business models, where you'll identify in what area of your life your creativity lies and how you can move forward from that point.I also love how this book incorporates all reading styles: Whether you like stories or just want to get practical step by step tips or examples, it reaches every reader on the right level.Absolutely a MUST, if you feel stuck, want to be inspired or were just wondering where that motivation comes from! :-)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Freedom Clause by Colby Sutter: Review By Mosholder Colby Sutter’s Freedom Clause: 14 Amendments to Freedom is an interesting book. It starts off as he (Colby Sutter) tells us the story of his past and of the skeletons in his closet, leading into his prayer for the book and how he hopes it will help everyone who dares to read the challenging novel, then into what we can do as the readers to free ourselves from the chains the devil has wrapped is up in. In the beginning, as Colby narrates his beginning of violence and drugs, at first it made me feel terrible about enjoying the story. I thought, I’m reading someone’s past and the terrible tragedies that have happened to him… Why am I enjoying it? However, I realized that what I was enjoying was not his past, but seeing for myself the change in him after God made Himself present. (Though He is always present, I hope you understand what I mean.) The mere fact that Colby would share something as intimate as this is amazing. I can see him sitting in the room with his hands clenched together, pressed to his forehead, wondering if he should really be sharing this. (I am not sure if that happened, I am just saying that this is what I imagined.) He wrote out what he was living and breathing, and how God changed his life for the better. My favorite chapter in this book is Chapter 3; Amendment 4: Forgiveness. I have a lot of forgiving to do in my life, and this book took me one step closer. You see, I always thought I was a forgiving person. I always thought that I let things go easily – That I let them roll off my shoulders and I didn’t say anything about them. But this chapter got me thinking… I do roughly two times the amount of “Well I forgave him, but let me tell you what he did…” that Colby talks about (page 62) than I do of letting things go and forgiving. I thought I was a forgiving person, but this helped me realize that though I am not, I can become one. So, Colby Sutter, thank you for your novel. It took courage to follow God’s Word and His request for you to share your life, to put it all at His mercy, and the mercy of your readers. This book gets a 9/10 from me. (Because this only goes through 5, I give it a 5/5.) The stories, the "interactives" (I am not sure what else to call them), and the hope it gives the hopeless are all given from the mind of a man who wants to serve the Lord and to help the world become a better place.Colby: Wonderful job! I thoroughly enjoyed myself reading this. I hope you like my review, and I hope we can meet in the future!To the rest of you: READ IT! If you need something to change your life in a short amount of time, this is the book. This is the book that will place a seed inside your life that the Lord will grow into something amazing.

By Craig This book is like 2 books in 1.It weaves lessons and workbook style activities to truly change your life together with a very personal story of Colby's life struggles and successes. Read it through without doing all the exercises because I wanted to get more information on Colby's personal journey.Now I'm re-reading it in order to focus on addressing my own struggles.I haven't had the same journey as Colby but the exercises allow you to focus on your personal challenges.

His journey on how he has finally excepted God to the fullest. This book is a self help workbook, to help you really take a true look at yourself and question, are you really being the best person you can be. The author explains the connection between belief systems, thinking, feeling, and behavior, how they interact and their consequences. The book is based on solid, well researched scientific evidence and gives 7 easy to implement steps to modify the elements that build your success in life. Chapter two of this book is a masterpiece. it explains the effects of negative thinking and its central areas identifying the types of negative thinking. The typology of negative thinking, based on the research of Aaron Beck and his disciple David Burns, give us a template to really understand negative thinking. The author goes on, in next chapter to gives the ways of modifying negative thinking and thus the behavior that results from it. He explains that there are two opposite basic mindsets, the fixed and the growth mindset, based on the research of psychologist Carol Dweck. Dweck who studied the subject for two decades discovered that each mindset had its patterns of though and action. With these elements, and many other fascinating results from scientific research on language and other areas the author builds a extremely effective way of transforming our behavior and thus changing the way we relate to others and to the world. This book is a unique tool for self understanding and self change. I'ts one of the best books I've come across on how to change yourself, but most importantly, on how to understand yourself. It would be great if school and college students could read this book. It could change their destinies.

The point is how to have the habit of thinking positively. Honestly I have read some books on this subject but they did not work out well on me. So I tried being positive once more and give this book a read. And I find many interesting and new things in it. In short, it contains 7 key steps to build effective, powerful and sustained positive thinking. I like the quotes and the examples it presents. I also like the section of body language in positive thinking. Do you know there are high power poses and low ones? And a smile in the mirror everyday can make big change in your life.

Jakes: Lessons of Leadership Success” is an outstanding book for someone that wants to get in touch with the spiritual side of life. With his 50 life lessons of wisdom by Time Magazine’s America’s best preacher, you can develop your spiritual direction just by reading the pages. The book is like having a spiritual adviser by your side. Through practical application of the concepts you can become more inspired to face life’s biggest challenges. I strongly recommend this book.

It does not however directly reference is the Bible as is sometimes the case with TD Jakes. Its worth, however, is boundless. The only reason I dropped one star is that it is poorly edited. There were misspelled and misplaced words on every third page which is too bad because it became a distraction from the content of the book.
