A book that discusses the aspects of each of the congregations in the US or world is a great reference tool in understanding what others believe. Is this book the one to choose for that purpose? First, I will discuss its contents, pros and cons before giving my final opinion.Rhodes' book begins with a very short history of the church (4 pages). He then defines 'denomination,' 'protestant' and gives a description of how to use the book.The books covers the following churches:AdventistsBaptistsBrethrenCatholicChristianCongregationalEpiscopalian and AnglicanFriends (Quaker)Fundamentalist and BibleHolinessLutheranMennoniteMethodistOrthodoxPentecostalPresbyterianReformedWith each congregation, Rhodes begins with a date of origin for the church, census of members and number of congregations. He then describes their beliefs and gives a chart of fast facts for the church. There are several added "fast fact" charts that detail theologies such as Calvinist and Arminian. Each congregation gets 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 pages (except the Roman Catholic Church where 10 pages are written.) Some congregations have a robust history leading into discussion of the divisions within, such as the Orthodox church.Pros:--A large swath of churches is covered.--A good index aids in finding churches. For instance, I wanted to find out what the Nazarene church was like, and the index pointed me to the Holiness section, which I was not aware they were part of.--There is an index of persons that helps in determining which authors are from which church.--Rhodes speaks from an unbiased viewpoint. One could not tell he is conservative dispensational Protestant from this writing.Cons:--Rhodes left out a couple of churches I have wanted to learn about in my town, namely Unitarian. Granted, many do not consider the Unitarian church to be strictly Christian, but it is a prominent congregation that would be helpful to have in the book.--The book is VERY vague about church beliefs. Many of the churches described deny the inerrancy of Scripture, but that can not be determined by the wording used, as the writing makes little distinction between those that call the Scriptures inerrant and those that do not. One must read between the lines or have some knowledge of the church to discern Rhodes' writing. Views of Scripture is only one of the vagueries, but is the most prominent.--The book does NOT discuss the issues that set the churches apart. Worship is spoken about, again, in vague terms. Is Christ present in the Eucharist of the Lutheran churches? One cannot tell from this book. (Some Lutheran churches do teach this and some don't.) Which churches put high focus on speaking in tongues? One cannot tell from this book.My greatest critique is vagueness. Granted, Rhodes could not have been very specific without relying on some theological bias. But, more specifics could be told. From this book, it is very hard to tell why there are divisions. What divides the American Baptists from the Southern Baptists? Episcopalian from Anglican? Greek Orthodox from Orthodox Church in America? Volumes could be written, but little of it could be found out in this writing.Is this book the one to choose for the purpose of understanding other congregations? I have to give a resounding no. The breadth of this book is a blessing and a curse. He doesn't leave many out, but the book would have to be much longer to give any insight into the differences between the congregations discussed.

Clark I found this book to be interesting in many parts, but fairly redundant and often too vague to be as helpful as it could be.The church history is interesting, and it is valuable to realize where all of the Christian denominations fit in the family tree. I also felt it is structured as a nice reference, so one could easily find a specific denomination.However, after a while, all of the theology started to seem to be the same--rather than highlighting the differences, he regurgitates the statements of each denomination in slightly different words for each one. Rather than reiterating the slightly different verbiage for each denomination regarding each major point, it woudl have been helpful to have a basic template with such things as inerrancy of scripture, belief in the Trinity, belief in the human and divine natures of Christ etc--and then have Yes/No or comments on how a specific denomination differs in one particular area. A chart comparing denominations would have been helpfu.I also found it frustrating that not much was said about worship style or structure of church services. While the cover of the book talks about it being handy for someone looking for a new church (or something like that), some things like liturgical worship style (yes/no, or shades of grey) or style of prayer (formal, thees and thous--or informal, "we just"...), or type of music (traditional hymns, organ music vs contemporary worship). Only a few churches who were considered very unique--ie, all singing a capella--were described in detail.I did find the "fast facts" interesting, although not always handily placed--definitions of 'millenial' beliefs were way after the first mention. And the comparision between Armenian and Calvinistic beliefs was interesting, but left out other perspectives which are neither of the 2.All in all, this is a decent book, a decent place to start learning about different denominations. I do wish it had more meat to it, and less redundency; more structure and focus on comparison/contrast and less regurgitation of what ever is on the church website.

Johnson Being a retired Congregational (UCC) minister the first thing I took a look at, in a Christian bookstore, was Rhodes' account of the people later to be known as the Pilgrims who traveled to these shore on the Mayflower. I was very surprised to read that they were led here by their pastor, John Robinson. In fact, John Robinson stayed behind in Leiden, Holland and died there in 1625. His wife who succeeded him once made plans to travel to America but for reasons unknown canceled them. As the assembly which had met at the "green gate" dwindled, she later joined the Dutch Church.John Robinson is rememberd for having said, "God hath yet more truth to bring forth from His holy word."Unfortunately, Rhodes doesn't seem as scholarly as others who have written about denominations, such as Mead, Hill and Atwood in the Handbook of Denominations, which is what I reccommend.

About the Author

Dru Joyce II was born and raised in East Liverpool, Ohio. He is a graduate of East Liverpool High School and Ohio University, with a degree in Business Administration. Dru moved his family to Akron in 1984 for his position at Con Agra. In 2004 Dru left Con Agra after twenty-six years to coach basketball full-time. Service and Leadership By John Bird In Beyond Championships, Coach Dru Joyce writes about the lessons he has learned, along with the values he has strived to instill in his players, through basketball.To Joyce, coaching and life are both about serving others:“Growing up doesn’t mean getting bigger or getting older. It means coming out of the delusion that we are here just for ourselves, just to have our own needs met. It means realizing we were put on this earth to make a difference. It means stepping further and further away from the misconception that we deserve things and more into the idea that we are here to serve.”Joyce has been a successful coach in two ways. First, he has had some outstanding players and teams and has won a lot of championships. Second, and more importantly, he has shaped a lot of lives in a positive way.One of the young men who Joyce coached—LeBron James—wrote this in the book’s forward:“On the court, the goal will always be to win a title. But off the court, the more important goal remains to shape the lives of young people in the community in the same way that Coach Dru shaped mine. We have all read the stories about how coaches overstepped their position of trust. We don't hear much about the coaches that go beyond the role of "coach" and make positive changes in their team. In the book, Beyond Championships, Coach Dru Joyce writes about the lessons he has learned, along with the values he has worked to instill in his players, through coaching basketball.To Joyce, coaching and life are both about serving others:Growing up doesn’t mean getting bigger or getting older. It means coming out of the delusion that we are here just for ourselves, just to have our own needs met. It means realizing we were put on this earth to make a difference. It means stepping further and further away from the misconception that we deserve things and more into the idea that we are here to serve.Coach Joyce has had a long and successful career in coaching for a couple of reasons. The list of championships that he has led teams to win is certainly impressive. He clearly knows the sport and how to encourage players to achieve the skills necessary to win. But secondly, and more importantly to me, are the stories his players share about how he has been the most important force in their lives and is the one responsible for helping them to make the needed changes to be successful both on and off the courts.One of the young men who Joyce coached—LeBron James—wrote this in the book’s forward:On the court, the goal will always be to win a title. By Andrew Smith I’m a member of the Family Christian Bloggers and they provided me with a free copy of Beyond Championships for this review.In Beyond Champions, Coach Dru II shared ten powerful principles he learned in his life and how they have influenced him as a coach. Some of these included, “The Beauty of Rock Bottom”, “The Power of Words”, “Dare to Dream”, “Take Charge of Your Mind”, and much more. He began the book about how decisions create the environment in which we are living in and they have an impact on the rest of our lives. He worked for a business corporation, ConAgra for 25 years and he was making a good living. He eventually discovered he wanted more and he wanted to follow his true passion, coaching basketball, and working with the young. Leaving his good paying job and changing careers was a tough decision but he realized this choice changed his entire life. He strongly believes in teaching his players the importance of making right decisions and asking themselves where they want to be in the next few years and making sure they plan for their futures.One of my favorite chapters was, “Use the Game; Don’t Let the Game Use You” because this one he opened up about his son, Dru and how he encouraged his son to press on even when it looks impossible. Dru had a dream of playing basketball but he is only five foot two and he struggled with insecurity. People would constantly criticize him for being short and they thought he wouldn’t be able to effectively play basketball. In the Divison III state championship game, when Dru was a freshman, his coach decided to send Dru out into the game. His team was three points down and Dru shocked the audience when he scored seven three pointers and won the game with 21 points. He now plays professional basketball in Germany. He didn’t let people stop him and tell him he couldn’t do it, he pushed on to accomplish his dreams.I would recommend this prevailing book to anyone who enjoys sports and reading a book that has a potent faith built message. I liked how Coach Dru shared personal stories ranging from his past relationships, to meeting his wife, raising a family, business field, and coaching. He was very transparent throughout the book about his disappointments, mistakes, and triumphs and what he learned through the ups and downs. This book taught me the importance of planning for the future and making wise decisions because they affect my life and others. This book would make a great gift to any youth sports fan as well as adults.

By Robbi Nadeau In this new mystery,Dotsy takes us to a rather snobbish conference entitled" The Lingering Effects of the KIng Arthur Tales on Life in Elizabethan England" in Oxford , England. She has been invited to attend by her major professor at the University of Virginia. Dotsy suspects a murder has taken place even though all the officials have written off the death of Bram Fitzwaring off to the fact that he was diabetic. Dotsy being a diabetic herself doesn't believe the evidence adds up to a natural death. Needless to say, Dotsy entertains us in her pursuit of figuring out how and why Bram died.You will be wanting to pack your bags to go to Oxford and explore the campus and town of Oxford with Dotsy. She has a way of involving the reader in all her thinking so much that you truly believe you can help her! Dotsy takes us down a trail of possible suspects and reasons for Barms' death but keeps us guessing until very close to the end on was there really a crime committed and if so who did it! I was surprised and I usually am a pretty good mystery solver.The reader will learn many facts about Diabetes and King Arthur because Dotsy loves to share all her knowledge while coming up with possible reasons for a murder etc. Thank goodness the author shares a list of characters in the beginning of her book to help the reader keep all the characters straight! It does help, because Dotsy's mind moves quickly at times and you could get lost.Dotsy mysteries always leave me wanting the next Dotsy book soon, real soon!

I'll confess to not being a great fan of Dotsy By Dan H Winters This is the fifth of Maria Hudgins series of mysteries built around her protagonist, Dotsy Lamb. I'll confess to not being a great fan of Dotsy, but it is the mystery that counts and this is a winner. I've come to think, after more mystery series than I can remember, that none seem to hit their strid until the third. Maria's have continued to get better with each one. Ms.Hudgins is a retired biology teacher and her interests run to many branches of science. It is this wealth of knowledge she has accumulated that make "Death in an Ivory Tower" a riveting mystery that blends science, Oxford, England, and many well crafted characters to produce a great read. A cast of characters is a real benefit as there are many involved, each well pictured and each with an important part to play. For those who read in many sittings scattered over some time, it is a genuine help to be able to refresh the memory of who is who. I should add that Oxford is really an important character and Maria's running description of this historic town does much to enhance this excellent mystery.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Cozy, but not too cozy, mystery By Texan felinophile Dotsy Lamb is not the usual savvy, warm graduate student. She has adult children and often travels with her best friend, sometimes accompanied by the friend's husband. The stories in this series take place in Europe during Dotsy's trips. She is in Cambridge for a conference and I found the descriptions of the historic buildings interesting, woven into the story rather than an example of the author's research abilities. There are some twists to the plot, the characters are three dimensional, and I found it to be a great cozy mystery.

The only reason that I am not giving it 5 stars is the lack of photos. It would have been nice to include photos, not necessarily of the beloved Guardian (since he didn’t like his picture to be taken), but at least of some of the individuals mentioned. I’m a visual person and would have appreciated some photos! I look forward to reading Volume 2, when it comes out.

The author, Earl Redman, clearly went to great lengths to gather together fascinating accounts of Baha'i pilgrims' visits to the Holy Land. I found it to be a "page-turner." Anyone interested in Baha'i history in general, and the utterly amazing Shoghi Effendi in specific, will be fully engaged by this book.

A fantastic guide to natural and alternative sleep By PR Labs This is a great book on natural and alternative ways to fall asleep which is a huge issue for millions of Americans. Sleep is such a fundamental requirement for healthy living and too many of us are sleep deprived due to stress, anxiety, drugs and medications, and lack of exercise. Ron gives us the tools to train our bodies to naturally seek out and adopt better sleeping habits. Great information for all of us. A great read with practical, simple steps for better living.

Ron Bazar, an insomniac graduate of Harvard university has done the work for you. With humor he traverses the universe of sleep solutions offered up for sale and those not for sale. This book is easy to read, full of cartoons to make you smile and cross-references to experts and resources available. An invaluable resource for a good night's sleep.

Great Resource on Everything About Sleep By John Blaxall The great thing about Bazar’s “Sleep Secrets” is that he doesn’t try to convince you to follow some “proven” method of his own concoction. Instead he acknowledges right at the outset that we are all different, and have different needs and responses. And then he lays out an astonishingly rich menu of advice and techniques that all sorts of medical and non-medical experts have proposed to help people deal with sleep problems. His message is: “Pick what makes sense to you, give it a trial, see if it works.”Because it’s an e-book, he doesn’t have to describe the options in much detail, he simply provides a link so the e-reader can immediately jump to the source material – and then jump back again to the text. This does not make for great literature, but it is amazingly convenient and informative. While Bazar doesn’t make judgments about what may or may not work for you, he occasionally mentions that something was particularly effective for him. And he does introduce cautions from time to time, for example about the electromagnetic fields that are associated with much of our modern gadgetry.The chapters are sensibly divided among the following topics: Why Sleep?, Routines, Light Controls, Sleep Environment, Electromagnetic Fields, Food & Supplements, Body-Mind Techniques, Sleep at Different Ages, Snoring & Sleep Apnea, and New Technologies. Just read it for the first time in 8 years and was able to absorb three times as much as before. Please bring the next two volumes to kindle.

The philosophy is right-on and it's written very clearly, making it possible to integrate/ comprehend. Plus, it's a wild ride that sparks the imagination. This was my first Svoboda book and afterward I got others. Hope others get as much out of this book as I do, many blessings.

About the author: Reuben A. Robinson (1860-1942) was a Methodist itinerant preacher, who later threw his lot in with the Nazarene church. Despite all the good he did, and all the authority he held, he was best known as "Uncle Bud." No doubt this was due to his simple way of preaching and overwhelming way of loving on people. The following is a brief obituary that serves as a concise biographical sketch: "An evangelist who claimed to have preached 32,176 sermons and won 200,000 converts, Rev. Reuben "Uncle Buddy" Robinson, is dead today. The thirteenth child of a poor mountain family of White county, Tennessee, he had an impediment of speech and could not write a word or spell his own name when he was converted at 20. But he overcame these handicaps to preach an average of 500 sermons a year to 72 denominations in his 61 years on the sawdust trail, and to write 10 books of which 500,000 copies were sold. He died last night in his Pasadena home. He was 82 years old."
