From 1948 to 1952 the lives of Trappist monk, Thomas Merton, and British novelist, Evelyn Waugh, were closely intertwined. During these years, Waugh became enthusiastic about American Catholicism, in particular, monasticism as seen through the eyes of the author of The Seven Storey Mountain. He agreed to edit Merton’s autobiography and the subsequent Waters of Siloe, for publication in Britain. In this close examination of their friendship, through their correspondence, we see Waugh’s coaching of a younger writer, and Waugh’s brief infatuation with America. Most of all, we witness Merton the writing student and spiritual master and Waugh the master of prose and conflicted penitent. And we see how the two men diverge as the Second Vatican Council takes hold of Catholicism and the solid spiritual ground beneath them gives way.

Merton and Waugh: A Monk, A Crusty Old Man, and The Seven Storey Mountain, by Mary Frances Coady

Review "Dedicated readers of Evelyn Waugh and Thomas Merton know of the connections between two major Catholic writers, especially of Waugh as editor and writing coach for Merton's work. But in this brief but thoroughly researched book, Coady provides important new details about Merton's role not just as willing student but as spiritual advisor to Waugh and puts those details into the cultural and religious context of the years after World War II in clear and sometimes eloquent fashion." —Robert Murray Davis, author of Brideshead Revisited: The Past RedeemedThank-you to Paraclete Press for sharing Merton and Waugh: A Monk, A Crusty Old Man, and The Seven Storey Mountain (2015) with the Emerging Scholars Network (ESN)! In an age of virtual friendships, Mary Frances Coady's weaving of personal correspondence flavored with mentoring, a brief personal visit with a long distance mentor, a wrestling with vocational direction, and a search for one's voice when immersed in a steady stream of writing when one longs for silence, hit a chord. Coming even closer to home, during this important season of writing/editing, I was particularly struck by the tension between a steady stream of writing with the challenge to chose one's words and publications carefully in order for them to be focused and have a lasting impact. Pray for discernment as we sharpen the ministry of the Emerging Scholars Network through resources such as Scholar's Compass. —Tom Grosh IV, InterVarsity Christian FellowshipMary Frances Coady’s new book, subtitled “A Monk, A Crusty Old Man and The Seven Storey Mountain”, is a fascinating new collection of correspondence between the Catholic novelist Evelyn Waugh and the Kentucky-based Trappist monk and author Thomas Merton. Through 20 letters and accompanying critical and biographical commentary, she reveals a story of two men united by a shared faith but divided by style. The battle between eloquence and plainness is a literary debate hundreds of years old, with both sides suggesting the other is deficient in some way. Is it harder to write simply, or is a paucity of vocabulary evidence of a limitation of imagination and ability?  Initially, in this version of the debate, Waugh seems very much to have the upper hand. Although Merton does not know this when he first writes to Waugh, Waugh has been employed by Merton’s publisher to edit the English edition of his book The Seven Storey Mountain. Writing to Waugh, he is guileless about his methods of composition, telling him: “I cover pages and pages with matter … and they … get lost, torn up, burned and so on.”  If this humorous self-depreciation was intended to elicit sympathy from Waugh, it didn’t work. Instead, the novelist’s criticisms were direct, Waugh noting that “Americans … tend to be very long-winded in conversation and your method is conversational”, and telling him “it is of course much more laborious to write briefly”.  Merton is clearly trying to impress Waugh with the diversity of his output: “At the moment … I am faced with a programme of much writing because we have to raise money to build some new monasteries. Most of what I have to do concerns the Cistercian life, history, spiritual theology, biographies etc. But [I am also] writing poetry and things like that for New Directions, and a wacky surrealist magazine called Tiger’s Eye that I think I had better get out of.”  But his humble-bragging falls on deaf ears, with Waugh replying: “You are plainly undertaking far too many trivial tasks for small returns … banging away at your typewriter on whatever turns up”.  Indeed, if a reader were to approach this book without previous knowledge of Merton’s much-loved and genuinely inspirational works, it might seem as if it were the collection of letters between a literary master and a bumbling amateur.  There is a black humour worthy of Waugh’s fiction in the way Waugh keeps repeating the word “silence” when he changes Merton’s titles for the English editions of his American books (The Seven Storey Mountain becomes Elected Silence, The Waters of Siloe becomes The Waters of Silence), as if wishing the monk would just shut up.  Coady increases this impression by including equally tart observations from Merton’s agent Naomi Burton, who tells him: “I think it’s perilously near the time when you are going to lose readers through over-publication” and warning him off publishing a previously rejected novel.  And yet, while Merton is always deferential (sometimes wincingly so) to Waugh in matters of literary style, he seems to have the upper hand when it comes to faith. When Waugh takes on a commission from Life magazine to write about American Catholics, he appears to struggle with the task – although he did, of course, get the raw material for his novel The Loved One from the experience.  Coady appears to raise an eyebrow about Waugh’s behaviour in America while touring Catholic colleges, implying that his appetite for expensive food and intemperate quantities of alcohol – as well as insistence on luxury during his travels – may not have been as conducive to religious contemplation as Merton’s self-abnegation. Ironically, it was Merton rather than Waugh who ended up in hospital with stomach problems.  Waugh becomes increasingly dismissive of the value of Merton’s work, noting that he doesn’t think “it’s possible to combine a Trappist’s life with that of a professional writer”, and suggesting that the contemplative life should produce cheese and liqueur rather than books.  But Waugh’s faith is challenged by his depression and – as Coady notes – by the 1950s his interest in American Catholic monasticism had disappeared altogether. She believes that Waugh became bitter about changes in the Catholic Church in the 1960s, and highlights the difference in vivacity later in life between the “physically enfeebled” Waugh and the lively Merton, who, she believes, was still in his prime when he died from an electric shock in Bangkok.  Owing to its short length and its deliberately narrow focus, this pithy book doesn’t really give a full flavour of either author, but it’s essential reading for anyone interested in Catholicism and literary criticism. No doubt Waugh would admire its brevity, but it would take Merton’s prolixity to fully untangle the multitude of ideas and resonances here. —Matt Thorne, Catholic HeraldMerton’s prolific correspondence also included letters exchanged with Evelyn Waugh as the famed author edited the British edition of Merton’s autobiography. Waugh challenged Merton—in sometimes cranky language--to become a better writer. A collection of their letters, Merton and Waugh: A Monk, A Crusty Old Man, and The Seven Storey Mountain by Mary Ann Coady, was published in March by Paraclete Press. —Lynn Garrett, Publishers WeeklyIn August 1948, a 33-year-old Cistercian monk in Kentucky was bemused and delighted to receive a letter from Evelyn Waugh. “Dear Brother Louis,” it began, “My criticisms were really personal… I didn’t like your criticisms of the Franciscans. God knows I have no business to lecture other people about charity but I expect a higher standard from [a] professed Religious than from myself” Not a good start, one might think, to a friendship. But that is what ensued, albeit a sporadic and mostly postal one. By “personal” here, Waugh seems to have meant “subjective”, and by “really”, “in fact”. This book pairs the two sides of an extraordinary correspondence linking it with biographical narrative. Much of the latter is borrowed, and all of the letters have appeared before in various places. Mary Frances Coady has permission only to quote two-thirds of the Waugh letters because the full texts are being saved for alexander Waugh’s Personal Writings volumes of the Complete Works being published by Oxford University Press. This restriction can make for some partial readings but she has ingeniously focused the range of disparate materials into a fragmentary joint biography. It might not be particularly “scholarly” but it is certainly engaging. I could imagine it becoming essential reading for creative-writing students, or for those interested in mystical theology. The criticisms Waugh was referring to in his letter were those in one he had written to the New York publisher Harcourt, Brace about Br. Louis’ (Thomas Merton’s) Seven Storey Mountain (1948), a spiritual autobiography that was to become an international best-seller but was then being prepared for publication in America. Harcourt had sent galley proofs to Waugh, Graham Greene, Claire Boothe Luce and Bishop Fulton J. Sheen in the hope of a puff for the jacket. Waugh was probably the last of these from whom a reply was expected. With Brideshead Revisited (1945) and The Loved One (1948) immediately behind him, he was the pre-eminent Catholic novelist of the day. He also came trailing clouds of gory encounters with cold callers. Much of his recent correspondence, even with friends, had been savagely misanthropic. Merton, on the other hand, was obscure yet optimistic, and humbly cocksure. He was contemplating his misspent youth among the fleshpots as background to the story of his conversion and vocation. His writing was slangy, sometimes flippantly humorous. Surely Waugh would despise his work? Not at all. He was full of admiration, and not only provided a scintillating endorsement for the publisher but also offered anonymously to edit Seven Storey Mountain for publication in the UK: it eventually appeared in 1950 as Elected Silence. Merton had first written to Waugh on 12 August 1948. The Trappist’s tone was unnervingly intimate for a stranger. “I need criticism”, he wrote, “the way a man dying of thirst needs water.” His problem was that his trade was writing: “Father Abbot gives me a typewriter and says ‘write’ and so I cover pages and pages … and they go to several different censors and get lost, torn up, burned … Then they get pieced together and retyped and go to a publisher who changes everything …” Books had always poured out of him: poetry, novels, theology, hagiography and now autobiography. Waugh did not approve of this as a literary strategy. Mountain was good, he thought, it was important, but it was aesthetically ill-disciplined. And so began a course of instruction. “With regard to style,” Waugh remarked, “it is of course much more laborious to write briefly. Americans, I am sure you will agree, tend to be very long-winded in conversation and your method is conversational. I relish the laconic.” These letters are full of priceless advice: “Never send off any piece of writing the moment it is finished. Put it aside … Go back to it a month later …” Merton’s approach in this, and in another book Waugh edited, The Waters of Siloe (1949; published in the UK as The Waters of Silence, 1950), represented “pattern-bombing instead of precision-bombing … it is not art.” And Merton had a problem, Waugh thought, with his multiple implied readers: “[Y]ou do not seem to have decided whom precisely you are addressing.” This was about The Ascent to Truth (1951), Merton’s ambitious discussion of St. John of the Cross. As always, there was a distinction in Waugh’s mind between the spiritual message and the art of writing. But there was also a connection: crystallise the expression and the theology would shine more brightly. Under this amiable assault, Merton reacted with humility and wit. He had only two hours daily to hammer out his thoughts and thus to subsidize the monastery, the beneficiary of his royalties. He did not have Waugh’s freedom to discipline his art. His was discipline of another sort in which art was subsidiary and oddly functionalist. As it happens, he was enormously successful as a writer, Mountain remaining at the top of the US bestseller lists from Christmas 1948 for 62 weeks. And as the correspondence progresses, the roles tended to reverse. Waugh the schoolmaster confesses his “general bad temper” to his pupil and eventually seems to have turned to him for advice about the aridity of his soul. Sadly, these crucial letters from Waugh have disappeared but we can guess at their content from Merton’s replies: “Like all people with intellectual gifts, you would like to argue yourself into a quandary that doesn’t exist. Don’t you see that in all your anxiety to explain how your contrition is imperfect you are expressing an instant sorrow that it is not so – and that is true contrition. A nice though – but Waugh must have cringed at the double negative. —The Tablet

Review "This volume deepens our understanding of Merton's early years as monk and writer and fleshes out one of his most intriguing relationships with a fellow writer. Engaging, informative, and illuminating!"—Christine M. Bochen, William H. Shannon Chair in Catholic Studies, Nazareth College

Kovacs Merton has way more fans than Waugh at this stage in the game -- but in my case, both of these amazing writers have directly affected my spirituality. So the fact that this small volume of their letters has been published is a cause for rejoicing. Although their correspondence was short, the completely unique personalities of these men come through in every letter. The only glitch is at the end of the book, when the action is wound up quickly with an account of each man's death. The author describes the Second Vatican Council as "a breath of badly needed fresh air for most Catholics" and dismisses Waugh as a stick-in-the-mud because of his extremely negative reaction to the destruction of traditional Catholicism after the council. The implication is that Merton, the "hippy monk", was thrilled with the "fresh air" of the council. Nothing could be further from the truth -- see Jim Forest's biography of Merton (Living with Wisdom) for more details. This biography -- one of the best on Merton -- is not listed in the references of this book, so perhaps the author did not do as much homework as she should have.

Reflections on Catholic writers By robert miecznikowski As a engineer who wishes to someday author a book, I found the letters between Merton and Waugh full of advice. Advice on writing and on living. As someone who has read their books their letters provided greater insight into their writing and lives. I wish that others can find how our lives change as we grow in our lifetime.

*This is a 9500 word true life short story. Once I believed I knew all there was to know about the creatures who roamed the Pacific Northwest forests. After spending long stretches of time alone out in the timber, a few strange experiences started eroding that conviction. This story is about some of those events leading up to a solo hunting trip out in an Oregon wilderness area. My know-it-all perception shattered then after a mysterious encounter with an unknown creature deep in a canyon. The experience changed me forever. The timber holds mysteries I’ve yet to solve.

The author is a very experienced woodsman with extensive experience in the wild from a young age. I always enjoy tales where people who have a great deal of experience in the wild learn that there are indeed things in the woods they didn't expect. The author tells of his many forays into the woods and his obvious love of nature. Despite that he has an early encounter he isn't quite sure about and doesn't take his father's advice to not return to that section of woods. He later doesn't take his own advice and finally learns that we are not the top of the chain in the wild. A great book and I hope that Mr. Connelly will write more books about his experiences.

Are you ready for a change in your life?

It's probably time to shake things up a little and start afresh. Change is not as simple as it seems, it takes courage and the wisdom to take the leap into a new beginning. Change means moving from what you are most familiar with and stepping into the unknown, also known as your 'new beginning'. Once you master this art well, you will become immune to the negative chatter that always creeps in when you are on your journey in life. It's time to trust the magic of 'new beginnings'.

Why did I write this book?

While many writers have elaborated on the merits of self-help, I believe I am uniquely qualified to write this particular book. Among many other things, like most of you I have faced adversity and I understand how it feels to be unsure of which way to turn, what to do next and whom to go to for support. I sought peace through self-help books, autobiographies, traveling, yoga and meditation. My travels helped me master my skills and control my cynicism and aggressiveness. They have ushered a new ray of hope into my life and given me profound insight. They turned me into a blissful, calm and content person who deeply appreciates life. I tossed out everything that didn't work and only retained whatever or whoever made me happy. Somewhere along the way something clicked and my life became way better than before. I know what desiring a lot more than you actually have feels like. I have experienced having aspirations and dreams that are bigger than what other people thought would ever be possible for me. The truth is you do not pursue happiness or success, you create it.

How to Love Yourself?

Life is simple, people make it complicated. Have you ever wondered why some individuals achieve massive success and are happy? Why others try very hard and still fail to maximize their talents? Do you aspire to do better, be better and achieve more in every aspect of your life? If so, this book is definitely for you! By reading “The Obstacle is You Series” you will discover the knowledge, principles and traits that are necessary to be happy and successful. This book will meticulously guide you through some proven techniques that will provide insights for leading a more fulfilled lifestyle. This book describes how a happy, successful and meaningful life is attainable by anyone who has desire, is dedicated and determined. This book is not like any other book that you have ever read. The goal of this book is to help you recognize when change is needed and ways to step into your power and own it. When you finally decide to turn a new leaf and live from a place of happiness, fulfillment is the by-product that happens. This book contains strategies of achieving your dreams. It’s divided into seven chapters. The chapters contain techniques to cope with life and to attain your goals. These are all my real life techniques. They are very simple but practical steps and if you are serious about achieving your dreams, then take all these steps with me. This book may go against everything you have ever thought or learned. It doesn't claim to give you all the answers. Instead it will encourage you to ask the questions that will allow you to enjoy your life and to create lasting happiness. I don't pretend to have all the answers and I'm still learning every day. However, the techniques mentioned in this book are the ones that have worked for me. By using them I have created a life I love. I am very passionate about my work and I love and respect the people I spend my time with. I'm also enthusiastic about my life outside of work. I am content with the balance that I have created between my work, personal relationships, self-actualization and other interests. Unfortunately, I think it's rare. And yet, while I know I'm lucky, most people can work towards those goals in their own lives.

THE OBSTACLE IS YOU: The Manual You Should Have Been Given When You Were Born (How to Love Yourself Book 2), by Munmi Sarma

About the Author Munmi Sarma is an author, globetrotter and the chairperson of Munmi IT Solutions LLP. She is an avid reader with a passion for writing self-help books. Since a very young age she read a lot of self-help books and really enjoyed the motivation and the idea of it: That so much of your life is within your control. She paints oils and acrylics to give away and is a vagabond at heart. She constantly works on the move and writes about how to make sense of the bizarre transitory phenomenon called 'Life' and it's numerous manifestations. She loves it when you jump into the conversation by commenting and finds writing in the 3rd person like this a little awkward.

By Sami Garaimpe The book provides a beautiful roadmap to find your inner self and strength as seen through the eyes of the author, her own personal experiences, and lessons. The ideas involved in this book, while not novel in their inception, can create an immediate positive impact to the reader. Ideas such as self-acceptance, mindfulness, patience, the ability to adapt and manage change, the personal responsibility to alter our thoughts and emotions for the better are only part of this book’s rich content. The smoothness of the narrative, the binding of the many lessons in one coherent synthesis, the use of many real-life examples, and the abundant use of proverbs make the book extremely helpful. What is truly great, though, is the fact that these lessons come not from an ordinary person, but from a woman with Asperger’s syndrome who had to overcome many obstacles in her life.

She writes with eloquence and a spiritually captivating style, and she shares honestly from her own life. Her guidance in getting out of your own way resonates with the authenticity of someone who has been “there” and has overcome. Each chapter delves into an issue we each struggle with in our personal lives and development (e.g. failure, self-hatred, fear) In these chapters, her reflections on her past, as well as the steps she has take in the present, are a model for what it means to move forward in life and have a more hopeful present and future. Each chapter addresses obstacles we typically place in our own way (these observations are incredibly insightful), and she provides ways for moving around, beyond, over, or through the obstacles (these suggestions are amazingly powerful). I personally found her chapter on fear to be especially meaningful (I tend to operate out of my fears more so than any other source). I felt exhorted and encouraged to face my fears.Anyone who struggles with self-doubt, wallows in woundedness, or feels enslaved to past demons will find this book a Godsend. It’s positive, practical, hopeful, and inspirational. It’s a delightful piece in the genre of self-development, and at the risk of sounding cliché—it’s must read. I’m pleased to recommend it to you.

I must say that this is a masterpiece because the secrets to confronting your inner demons are in this book. In all the chapters the author describes her seven years of soul searching, suffering, meditation, discoveries and achievement. This isn't some snappy solution created by an internet outsourcer. This is a serious work by an author who has walked the talk. This book has exceeded my expectations. The chapters are easy to understand and humorous at the same time. Many self-help books are written in a similar vein, that becomes boring after a point of time. But not this one, I was shocked by the revelations of the author in each chapter. Her past has definitely been a roller coaster ride. She reveals her battles with money, insomnia and addiction, and how she ultimately overcame it all. Hats off to her, her story has given me a lot of confidence to face and beat my demons. I read this book from time to time, especially when I need a little push to think positively.I wish more writers would do that, come out in the open with their true stories and not such fabricated ones. This book goes beyond the typical quick fix approach. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to honestly deal with his or her demons and genuinely wishes to overcome them.

This book is especially written for young people who want to understand more about what service means in Christian perspective. It is addressed to people whose experience in service has led them to want to think more clearly and deliberately about its meaning and significance, especially in religious terms. It presumes a genuine interest in--but not necessarily a strong commitment to--Christianity. It regards Christianity neither as a moral code nor theory of the world nor religious special-interest group, but as a way of life that centers on Jesus Christ. Christians are known for following a Master who taught us to regard our lives as called to loving service of one another and the wider world. Yet we find it difficult to talk about the connection between Christian faith and service, or at least to talk about it in nuanced and complex ways. This book has been written to help overcome the gap between our language and our experience.

Smart, clear approaches to working through what you really want to do with the rest of your life in an easy to read format.

Packed with good information and stories; an empowering, enjoyable and useful read By Amazon Customer I'm 25+ years from retirement, but I had heard about these co-authors' style and it's never too early to start thinking about or planning on this topic, especially in view of semi-recent economic events. So much on this topic can be scary or dry. This book, however, is story-filled, information-packed and an enjoyable and empowering read.I hadn't really thought about it before, but especially enjoyed the "Leaving your legacy" chapter-- defining and acting on your values, gifts to your family and/or society, of time, money or being a role model - eye-opening, compassionate, very thought-full.I highly recommend it for all boomers, but also for us GenX-ers who like to think ahead. I may pick up a few for holiday gifts.

The terror masters of ISIS are determined to get America's attention. They’ve humiliated the Iraqi Army we trained and seized territory in Iraq that we had secured at the cost of so many American lives. They’ve beheaded American journalists on camera in a direct challenge to the power and resolve of the United States. And now ISIS is calling for "city wolves" across the United States to act on their dedication to the Islamic State’s blood-drenched ideology and murder innocent American citizens at random.Who is ISIS? Where did it come from, and what is driving its successful campaign of murder and conquest? Our government and our media alike seemed to be blindsided by the Islamic State’s blitzkrieg-like advance, which forced American troops back into Iraq. ISIS has conquered a territory roughly the size of the state of Indiana, rules over eight million terrorized souls, and has even revived the practice of legal slavery. And yet the true motivations, inner workings, and future plans of this terror state and its mysterious caliph seem almost as obscure as when ISIS first burst onto the world scene. In ISIS Exposed, veteran investigative reporter Erick Stakelbeck gets inside the story of the new caliphate and reveals just how clear and present a threat it is.

Review “If you want to know what makes ISIS tick, Erick Stakelbeck is your man. In ISIS Exposed: Beheadings, Slavery, and the Hellish Reality of Radical Islam, Stakelbeck reports the shocking facts about the world’s most vicious terrorist organization, and shows why America can’t afford to look away.”—Sean Hannity, host of Hannity on Fox News and The Sean Hannity Show on Premiere Radio and Cumulus and author of the New York Times bestsellers Deliver Us from Evil, Conservative Victory, and Let Freedom Ring“Don’t miss this very timely book. As Erick Stakelbeck shows, the Islamic State has opened a newly effective front in a worldwide terror war against the West, with tactics that appeal strongly to potential recruits right here in the U.S. ISIS Exposed will give you the facts you need to understand the ISIS threat and hold our elected officials responsible for countering it.”—Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and New York Times bestselling author of Winning the Future, Real Change, and Breakout“In ISIS Exposed, intrepid reporter Erick Stakelbeck excavates deep into the ISIS threat, shining a hard light on who they are, their horrific extremes in pursuit of a nightmare scenario, and why they’re so successful at recruiting young people from the West to join them in Syria—or worse, stay home and attack America from within. To understand this grave, deadly threat to world peace, read this riveting book, and quickly.”—Edwin Black, New York Times bestselling author of IBM and the Holocaust and Financing the Flames“Sooner or later, America is going to have to face the facts about ISIS. Minimizing the threat and applying half measures against it, as President Obama has done, will only ensure that the terrorism continues to metastasize. In ISIS Exposed: Beheadings, Slavery, and the Hellish Reality of Radical Islam, Erick Stakelbeck reports the facts about the Islamic State: how it grew out of al Qaeda, spread mayhem across the Middle East, and is inspiring hundreds of young people—from London and Minneapolis to Syria—to commit acts of violence, conquest, and brutality.”—Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas, host of Huckabee on Fox News, and presidential candidate

From the Inside Flap Who Is ISIS?The terror masters of the Islamic State are determined to get our attention. They’ve humiliated the Iraqi Army we trained and seized territory in Iraq that we had secured at the cost of so much American blood and treasure. And now ISIS is calling for "city wolves" across the United States to act on their dedication to the Islamic State's blood-drenched ideology and murder random Americans going about our daily business.Who is ISIS? Where did it come from, and what is driving its successful campaign of murder and conquest? Our government and our media alike seemed to be blindsided by the Islamic State’s blitzkrieg-like advance, which forced American troops back into Iraq. ISIS has conquered a territory roughly the size of the state of Indiana, rules over eight million terrorized souls, and has even revived the practice of legal slavery. And yet the true motivations, inner workings, and future plans of this terror state and its mysterious caliph seem almost as obscure as when ISIS first burst onto the world scene. Now veteran investigative reporter Erick Stakelbeck gets inside the story of the new caliphate and reveals just how clear and present a threat it is. And he puts forward a strategy for defeating the Islamic State, including the steps we must take to protect America and defeat the newly resurgent global jihad.

By Craig Matteson If you believe that the problem with “violent extremists” is that we don’t make them feel as if their concerns are being heard or validated, as President Obama does, this book is not for you. Erick Stakelbeck shows us clearly that the problem with ISIS, ISIL, IS, or whatever you want to call them, is not a sense of powerlessness, but is a vision of violence, murder, and a hatred of all they consider to be apostate and fallen from what they consider the “true” faith. They see themselves as implementing the vision revealed by Gabriel to Muhammed about 1,500 years ago. They have no intention of moderating, of being satisfied where they are. They have a global vision and will keep fighting for it until they are stopped. And by stopped, I believe the only thing that will stop them is death. Theirs or ours.Chapter one explains the idea of the Caliphate. The sophisticates in the West love to dismiss this notion of a global kingdom of Islam, but it is what is driving ISIS and its competitors. As the author points out, Iran is also seeking similar goals, but they call it an Imamate. But it is the same idea. They are serious about this. We just saw in the news this past week that ISIS is gaining ground outside of Iraq. Boko Haram just swore allegiance to ISIS. And ISIS has the beginnings of state wealth and power to back their aims of conquest for Allah. No matter the group, the goal is the same – to expand Islam by force. The difference is that the leaders of the various factions are vying over who the Supreme Leader – the Caliph or Imam – should be.Chapter two shows us what it is like to be in conflict with ISIS and to live as a conquered people under ISIS. In short, it is hell. President Obama keeps telling us that ISIS is not Islamic, but its very name says it is. They quote their scripture, and they are winning converts from around the world to their cause. And few if any more “orthodox” Muslims have declared them to not be Muslims. They may disagree with their methods (or not), but they will not “excommunicate” them or declare them not of the faith. Yet these killers go after every non-Muslim minority group in their territories. They make horrifying videos of beheadings, crucifixions of adults and even of children. They bury people alive. They destroy precious artifacts. And they take over strategic infrastructure and threaten the very life of the nation they are trying to conquer. They held the Mosul dam briefly, but the Kurds were able to take it back. If ISIS had destroyed that dam they could have flooded vast portions of the country downstream and destroyed needed water flow for human consumption and farming. President Obama has repeatedly given ISIS space to operate by assuring them that we will not come back to Iraq with our armies to fight a ground war. While he has come against them with relatively few airstrikes, it has not had a decisive effect on their goals or operations. And all the while, innocents live in terror and are tortured and murdered. The author takes us into individual accounts of what it is like to be imprisoned, tortured, and witness to the many depredations and executions of ISIS.We have had administration officials tell us why ISIS is no threat to America. This is nonsense. ISIS has said they are going to bring the fight to us. Anyone remember 9/11? They have threatened the Mall of America in the Twin Cities. Why there? Because we have imported, for some reason, tens of thousands of Somalis here and have made the Twin Cities the largest population of Somalis in America. Not only could some of them be the Jihadists we see causing pain and suffering in Somalia, they are also seeking new recruits here. They have called for attacks on soft targets by individuals and small groups all over the world. We have seen their attacks in Mumbai, at the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, and lone wolf attacks in Australia, London, New York, Ft. Hood, Canada, and Paris. There were failed attacks by the shoe bomber, the underwear bomber, the Times Square bomber and others. When they tell us what they intend to do we should take them seriously because they often follow up and attempt exactly what they said they wanted to accomplish. This is all covered well in chapter 3. Some might complain that some of these were al Qaeda not ISIS, but ISIS is a break-off of al Qaeda. While it is true that 9/11 did not threaten the existence of America, neither did Pearl Harbor. Nevertheless, the 19 Jihadists who brought down the World Trade Center and attacked the Pentagon ended up killing three thousand people and damaging the American economy to the tune of a trillion dollars; not counting the wars that followed. This is why ISIS is recruiting individuals all around the world, including young women. Shannon Conley was a solid student growing up and was in her junior year of high school when she decided to become a “slave to Allah”. She started wearing Islamic dress, became active against Christians who supported Israel, and wanted to become a nurse to care for wounded ISIS soldiers and a bride of a Jihadist. She was arrested at the Colorado airport on her way to engage with ISIS. She is just one of many around the world following the same path. ISIS knows the kind of people who are attracted to their message and has learned how to reach them through social media and a network of organizations. You can read all about this in chapter 4. Chapter 5 covers how they manage to make ISIS and Jihad appear cool to lost and impressionable youth around the world.Chapters 6 and 7 take us on a bizarre tour of London and the rest of Europe and their being transformed by a cultural and economic invasion from the Middle East. It seems that what Islam could not gain by conquest under the Ottomans they are achieving by immigration and many children today. They are aggressive in their use of the social welfare state for their personal benefit and their push to change laws to suit their religious beliefs. And if they can’t change the laws, they create “no go” zones where the police stay out and an unassimilated community runs things their own way, regardless of the country’s laws. They are also aggressively building mosques and seeking converts to their faith including fostering the toxic doctrines of Jihad and war against the West generally and Israel and America in particular. The final chapter looks at the upside down America seems to be taking in the Middle East. Obama seems to be rejecting or at least isolating brave souls like al Sisi of Egypt, who has risked his very life by calling for religious reform and moderation in Islam. Instead, Obama seems to prefer to huddle with the Muslim Brotherhood and its allies despite their ties to the very movements that state their clear aim of harming Americans and destroying America. Obama has also made public statements about Israel that have had made peace even harder because of his calls for Israel to take positions or enact policies that would make it less secure and embolden those factions whose stated aim is to erase Israel and drive the Jews into the sea. We are living in an absurd fantasy if we suppose that we are safe from ISIS and its cousins. They are here already and growing stronger. They have an instant presence everywhere in the world through their sophisticated use of social media, their interpersonal networking, and recruiting among targeted young people. Wake up, get informed, and let’s get America ready to push back. If we don’t we will just have to pay the price with accrued interest. Elect people who understand the threat. Encourage the voices who speak against the Jihadist movement. And enact better immigration and border security to make importing this disaster more difficult to accomplish.Reviewed by Craig Matteson, Saline, MI

Gordon Just finished reading "ISIS Exposed: The Hellish Reality of Radical Islam" by Erick Stakelbeck, the best book I've read in 2015! A must read for valuable insights into what makes the Islamic State tick, and how it's gathered 20,000 foreign fighters from some 90 countries worldwide. From the Psychopaths, to the Pious, to the Sunni Pragmatists, Erick traces how this murderous cult is attracting thousands of Westerners... from suburban teens in Minnesota to the urban sprawls of Europe's biggest cities... London, Paris, Amsterdam, to Berlin. Losers on the margins of society in this life, they aim to be part of something bigger... founding fathers and mothers of a utopian "Caliphate" sounds good. And if not successful in this life, marytrdom sounds promising for rewards in death. Should be required reading in all high school & university civics classes. And then some...

It's time to learn the truth about radical Islam, not the watered down version of the news peddled by the liberal media and the Obama administration. The truth is much worse than what we've been told. Learn about the threat which is as close as the Twin Cities and the ongoing betrayal of the U.S. president as he deals with the Muslim Brotherhood and our enemies in Iran. It's time to name our enemy, Islamic Terrorism" and quite lying to the American People.
