8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Greatest series of books ever!!! By George Mattern Apart from the God-authored Holy Bible, the MacArthur New Testament Commentary is the greatest series of books in the history of the written word!Dr. John MacArthur has been pastor of Grace Community Church in Los Angeles since 1969. During that time, he has preached verse-by-verse through the entire New Testament. The commentary chapter divisions are (essentially) derived from those individual sermons. The essence of John MacArthur's credibility is his unswerving devotion to the Divine inspiration (authorship), absolute inerrancy, and complete authority of the Bible. Since the Bible is the true and infallible written revelation of God to mankind, Dr. MacArthur has said: "The only logical response to inerrant Scripture is to preach it expositionally. By that, I mean preaching in such a way that the meaning of the Bible passage is presented entirely and exactly as it was intended by God." This commitment results in content that is consistently and faithfully evangelical, because, as he explains: "Over the years of teaching the word of God without a lot of presuppositions, I tend to conclude whatever I believe the exegetical process yields."But, although MacArthur has successfully disentangled himself from the straightjacket of agenda-driven or tradition-mandated, outcome-based theology--paying no tribute to conformity with any human opinion--he is by no means a doctrinal libertine. He is manifestly committed to declaring "the whole purpose of God" (Acts 20:27), and yet equally determined "not to exceed what is written" (2 Corinthians 4:6). This honest, forthright handling of Scripture renders MacArthur's work refreshingly free of the distortions and outright oppositions of the ear-tickling theology demanded by fallen human preference--which is so often shamelessly catered to and pandered to by the Lord's foes and friends alike! In these commentaries (and, indeed, in any of MacArthur's books and sermons), the subject matter of Holy Scripture is always presented with credence as trustworthy, dynamic, living truth that has urgent and immediate application for every reader--as you would expect of words written by Almighty God Himself.. And MacArthur is a master at explaining the Bible with the Bible by comparing parallel passages, citing cross references with similar details, doctrines, or concepts, and appealing to Scriptural examples as the best demonstration of Scriptural principles. As a result, his sermons and commentaries have broad appeal and relevance in any and every society or time period. In addition to the trustworthy doctrinal content, MacArthur's commentaries are rich with fascinating historical and cultural details that bridge the gap of millennia and bring the reader closer to the events, people, and settings of the Bible. Many informative linguistic insights are also provided which further enhance the understanding of words and passages. Extensive quotations from various authors on related subjects and issues add a stimulating variety of perspective, which is accessible in the commentary chapters where they appear and in the bibliographies at the end of each volume. The format of the commentary series is designed for maximum convenience, with helpful features for quick reference and more in-depth study. In every volume and every chapter, the message of the Word of God is presented with clarity and concision that will readily appeal to the most serious Bible student, and yet the content is not overly technical so as to be too laborious for a layman. Most importantly, the rich information and detail that is presented about God and His truth is always accompanied by a convicting call to practical application in sincere obedience, as the Lord Jesus said: "If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them" (John 13:17). This governing principle for the commentary project is given by Dr. MacArthur in the series Preface, which appears at the outset of every volume: "My prayer is that each reader will fully understand what the Holy Spirit is saying through this part of His word, so that His revelation may lodge in the minds of believers and bring greater obedience and faithfulness--to the glory of our great God."ALL of John MacArthur's books are similarly valuable for their forthright, straightforward, faithful proclamation of the truth of God and the one true gospel of salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone (apart from any false considerations of human merit)--which is mankind's only hope of escaping God's righteous judgment against the sin we are all guilty of committing against Him. Some of my personal favorites, in addition to these commentaries, are--the MacArthur Study Bible (the greatest single-volume book in the history of the written word), One Perfect Life, The Gospel According to Jesus, Ashamed of the Gospel, The Love of God, and the Battle for the Beginning (among many others).

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Book Worth Reading By K. Hurley This book was originally put together in the 1960's from stories that were submitted from individuals. I found all the stories interesting and well written and for the most part believable. I was especially interested in one story about two individuals using a Ouija board who claim to have received messages from the Angel Raphael. I checked some of the references that they quoted and they all exist. This seemed like a truly unusual story at first that has led me to new areas of reading, and I think that all good stories should entice you look further for more information. I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading the other books in this series.

The Zodiac by Degrees: Second Edition, Extensively Revised, by Martin Goldsmith

Review "A contemporary alchemist of the first order, Martin Goldsmith melds copious amounts of research with keen perception and psychic intuition to produce these 360 gems. The Zodiac by Degrees is the best work yet on the Sabian Symbols; it is also hugely entertaining." --Peter Malsin, author of The Eyes of the Sun"At last! An astrologer who has undertaken the huge workload of intensive research into the individual degrees of the zodiac. Thanks to his years of work, Goldsmith has finally taken this area of astrology out of the misty, intuitive, 'channeled' area of the Sabian symbols onto the firmer and more reliable footing of good, grounded research. This long-needed book is therefore and essential reference work for any serious astrologer." --Bernadette Brady, author of Predictive Astrology"The Zodiac by Degrees gave me serious goose bumps on several occasions. Inside of half an hour, the text had cleared up my ambivalence about the exact degree of my Ascendant and given me a new understanding of my Sun degree-one vastly more evocative than the traditional Sabian interpretation. Martin Goldsmith is a poet in the old sense of the word: he's on fi re with imagery and the fi re is contagious" --Steven Forrest, author of The Inner Sky

About the Author Martin Goldsmith has studied zodiacal degree symbols for more than 40 years and has done extensive research on planets, signs, and houses. He has a PhD in the history of science with an emphasis on the intersection of early modern science and the Western occult tradition. Goldsmith is the author of Moon Phases: A Symbolic Key, which provides images for the 28 phases of the moon. More recently he has published Jupiter's Dance, which provides radical new interpretations for Jupiter and the other planets. Martin lives in New Mexico.

45 of 46 people found the following review helpful. A Fascinating, Lesser Known Aspect Of Astrology By Janet Boyer "What are the degree symbols? Are they archetypes in the collective unconscious? Are they the divine ideas of Plato and the neoplatonists?" --Martin Goldsmith, author of The Zodiac by Degrees - 360 New SymbolsAstrology is the fascinating science and art that delves into who we are, why we are here, and why we do what we do. A lesser known component of Astrology is the degree symbols. When viewing an astrological chart, there are 360 tiny lines that intersect with the circumference. Each line is reprented by a degree, and there are 30 degrees within each Sign. Since there are 12 signs in the Zodiac, this adds up to 360 symbols. The degree symbols are not glyphs; rather, they are a symbolic picture of an individual's personal mythology and orientation. If you were to have a chart generated by software or somewhere online, you'd be given the specific natal location of the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, planets, and so on. You'd also be given the degree of the placement. For example, according to my natal chart, the Sun is in 14 degrees Scorpio and the Moon is 18 degrees Aquarius. Whether using an astrology book or a generated report, the most information you're usually given would be the meaning of the Moon in Aquarius in the 11th House. This is obviously more detailed and helpful than just an explanation for Moon in Aquarius! However, there is a discipline within Astrology that gets even more specific, and that is the realm of the 360 symbols. These ancient symbols are most commonly known as the Sabian symbols, but there are other symbolic systems that exist. Most Astrologers shy away from the 360 degree symbols, feeling that it only further complicates Astrology, or, that the Sabian symbols have been accurate at times, but largely hit-and-miss.Author Martin Goldsmith, Ph.D (history) has studied the symbols of the zodiac for more than 30 years and has done extensive research on planets, signs and houses. After examining thousands of charts he realized that the Sabian symbols were more positive and accurate than other symbol systems; however, some of them had, at best, only a tangential relationship to the Sabian symbols. In his new, 369-paged book The Zodiac By Degrees, Goldsmith offers an intriguing portrait of each of the 360 symbols. Mixing empirical research with intuition, he fills in the gaps and discrepancies outlined in the Sabian symbols--creating a whole new set of symbols. Astrologers will find this new book a fascinating addition to their interpretative tools, and the layman will discover a new way to see their astrological chart. You don't need to be an astrologer to use these symbols. Online, you can visit a site such as Astro.com to generate a free natal chart. (Scroll down to the section Chart Drawing, Ascendant.) Each degree in your chart is provided (e.g. Mars 11 Degrees Libra), so you can cross reference the degrees with the symbols in the book. If you're not sure of your exact birth time, your Ascendant (also known as rising sign) and House cusps may be off. However, the use of the descriptions of each symbol can be used to rectify your Ascendant. Each degree has a symbolic phrase, a paragraph of descriptive phrases, and a listing of famous examples and their occupation, milestones, reason for notoriety, roles played (on stage or in movies) and so on. For example, my Moon is in 18 (degree) Aquarius. The symbolic phrase is:An ominous silence falls as the last man at a masquerade party prepares to unmask. Outside, a thunderstorm is brewing.A few of the descriptive phrases:Exposing uncomfortable truths; unwillingness to relate on a phony, masky level (troublemakers, enjoy rattling people); bringing negative undertones to the surface and clearing the air; breaking through fears and doubts that isolate people from each other...)Just a few of the famous examples listed for this degree symbol include:*Madame Blatavasky (Jupiter. Seeker, mystic, founder of Theosophical Society, wrote Isis Unveiled)*Frida Kahlo (Chiron. Painter)*Joseph Campbell (Saturn. Jungian anthropologist-The Masks Of God)*Roseanne Barr (North Node. Brought social realism to the TV sitcom)The examples the author picks are specifically related to the symbol itself, which makes it much more interesting than "Roseanne Barr, actress".One might ask why bother with a interpretative system that isn't cut and dried like the rest of astrology? I believe the author answers this question quite well:"Imagistic astrology allows you to penetrate to the level of soul and spirit. Symbols are like 'windows to the soul', for, as religious thinkers have always known, symbols can put you in touch with the spiritual energies they represent. Keyword astrology, by contrast, has no real energy. When you read keywords, you begin and end by checking off points on a mental list--That's true; that's true; that's not true. Symbols have the power to engage your intuitive faculties. They help you make a direct connection with a person's basic spiritual energies and penetrate the private language of their personal mythology."I have found the information on each symbol of my natal chart to be an amazingly accurate portrayal of the archetypal energies that have woven throughout my life. I also compared the book to my husband's chart, yielding fascinating insights. Seasoned astrologers will find The Zodiac By Degrees an invaluable expansion to their interpretive tools. Non-astrologers will appreciate the added depth and breadth that the degree symbols provide to natal chart interpretation.

Forrest This book is truly excellent, which is why I was delighted to write the Foreword for it! But 100% of the credit for writing the book itself goes to the brilliant and talented Mr Martin Goldsmith. I'd love to claim some of the glory, but alas the Lords of Literature would send me straight to Hell.

By Andrew Homer WOW!!!Of the 4-5 books on individual degree interpretation I've seen these last 35-yrs, this one is head, shoulders & torso above the rest.I could see the points being made with Dane Rudhyar's poetic imagery in his fabulous "Astrological Mandala" these last 31-years since that gem was first published.I've had the pleasure of meeting both Dane Rudhyar and Martin Goldsmith. Martin is most definitely more understandable.I rectified my wife's natal chart and she acknowledged that Martin's assessment of her rectified Ascendant degree was on target.Martin's delineations in Zodiac by Degree is to the awesome pinpoint. I was amazed by his accurate details.Goldsmith's only psychological astrology rivals are Jefferson Anderson (Sun Signs/Moon Signs), Garth Allen (Taking the Kid Gloves Off Astrology), and the 2 Jungian babes: Liz Greene (Britain) & Karen Hamaker-Zondag (Netherlands).(I was born in San Diego, just blocks away from where Alan Leo and his psychic collaborated on his Sabian Symbols text in the 1930s.)For more details, see my [...]

The supposed collapse of Roman civilization is still lamented more than 1,500 years later―and intertwined with this idea is the notion that a fledgling religion, Christianity, went from a persecuted fringe movement to an irresistible force that toppled the empire. The "intolerant zeal" of Christians, wrote Edward Gibbon, swept Rome's old gods away, and with them the structures that sustained Roman society.

Not so, argues Douglas Boin. Such tales are simply untrue to history, and ignore the most important fact of all: life in Rome never came to a dramatic stop. Instead, as Boin shows, a small minority movement rose to transform society―politically, religiously, and culturally―but it was a gradual process, one that happened in fits and starts over centuries. Drawing upon a decade of recent studies in history and archaeology, and on his own research, Boin opens up a wholly new window onto a period we thought we knew. His work is the first to describe how Christians navigated the complex world of social identity in terms of "passing" and "coming out." Many Christians lived in a dynamic middle ground. Their quiet success, as much as the clamor of martyrdom, was a powerful agent for change. With this insightful approach to the story of Christians in the Roman world, Douglas Boin rewrites, and rediscovers, the fascinating early history of a world faith.

Review "A genuinely thought-provoking and imaginative book." -- Peter Thonemann, The Wall Street Journal"[Douglas] Boin is a gifted writer with the rare ability to bring ancient history before modern eyes." -- Greg Carey, The Christian Century"An unusual and sometimes alternative, cultural history of late antiquity for those with an affinity for classical civilization." -- Library Journal "Boin is an entertaining guide, leading the reader through complex texts, materials, and events with a panoptic gaze, an engaging pace, and humor--like Morgan Freeman narrating March of the Christians." --  John David Penniman, Marginalia (Los Angeles Review of Books) "A very thorough and detailed picture of what it was like for a Christian living in the early Roman Empire...Very well written." -- Lisa Covington, Manhattan Book Review

"Boin offers a highly original approach to the social and religious anxieties that seized Jesus' followers in the years after his death. The result is not just another new study of early Christianity. Coming Out Christian in the Roman World takes the history of the Roman empire into a wholly new direction." ―Reza Aslan, author of Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth

"In this well written and engaging book about late antiquity, Boin provides us with a thought provoking new take on the origins of Christianity with explanatory power for how we think about ourselves today. Anyone who wonders or worries about religious freedom in the modern world should read Coming out Christian." ―Candida Moss, author of The Myth of Persecution

"The author provides some thought-provoking points and successfully begins a dialogue with conventional wisdom on this subject." ―Kirkus

"An unusual and sometimes alternative, cultural history of late antiquity for those with an affinity for classical civilization." ―Library Journal

"Boin has produced a genuinely thought-provoking and imaginative book." ―Wall Street Journal

"Boin is an entertaining guide, leading the reader through complex texts, materials, and events with a panoptic gaze, an engaging pace, and humor--like Morgan Freeman narrating March of the Christians." ―John David Penniman, Bucknell University, Marginalia

"Boin is a gifted writer with the rare ability to bring ancient history before modern eyes." ―The Christian Century

"One of the excellent points he makes concerns how most early Christians were 'the quieter ones,' who went along with many of the civic/religious ceremonies, and may well have converted more pagans to their faith than the argumentative martyrs. Other topics include the wide variety of Christianities in those early years, Judaism, the cults of Mithras and Isis, and, most of all, just how complex religious life on the ground really was during late antiquity." ―The Historical Novel Society

Some early Church leaders emphasized an absolute rejection of normal Roman civil society, especially of anything to do with traditional sacrifices. Boin argues that in practice many early Christians appear to have drawn a softer line, being willing to juggle a private Christian identity with a more conventional public identity. This may have meant either concealing or perhaps simply downplaying their Christian identity in public. Many early Christians may have seen no real conflict in a willingness to publicly fit in to broader Roman society, including participating in traditional local ceremonies (including eating sacrificed animal meat). Boin provides example of soldiers or even bishops who juggled the two roles. As Christianity moved to the forefront and Church leaders acquired real influence over Emperors, the Church became openly intolerant of other sects and eventually actively suppressed them. Boin argues that this was to a significant degree driven by conflicts within the Christian community, with vocal factions trying to demonstrate that they were more authentically Christian by first rejecting Christians with "Pagan" or "Jewish" leanings, and then by rejecting any Christians who were willing to tolerate Paganism in others.Boin has a slightly meandering style, but he writes well and he uses many concrete examples to support his central argument: that the adoption of Christianity within the Roman empire was not always an "all or nothing" confrontation, but often progressed as a quiet co-existence, often happening below the radar of the authorities.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Somewhere over the Rainbow By Roderick Blyth In the thirteenth book of his Annals, Cornelius Tacitus refers to a lady called Pomponia Graecina. Pomponia, he says, was accused of a ‘foreign superstition’ and was 'handed over' to her husband, Aulus Plautius, (known otherwise to history as the first governor of Roman Britain). Tacitus writes that Plautius conducted an ‘old-style investigation’ into his wife’s ‘character and honour’ and pronounced her innocent. The historian adds that Pomponia’s ‘long life was passed in a state of grief and mourning’ - a fact which he attributes to the vindictive elimination of her daughter, Julia, by the Empress Messalina, but the passage, with its reference to ‘foreign superstition’ and to Pomponia’s secluded way of life life has long been associated with the suspicion that Pomponia was an early Christian - a view which is said to be supported by a third century Christian inscription celebrating the ‘gens Pomponia’ (See Cornelius Tacitus, ‘Annales xiii, 32; ‘Documents of the Christian Church’, ed.Bettenson & Mander, Ed.4 Oxford University Press (2011).This anecdote, and the uncertainties as to its interpretation, is good example of the difficulty faced by those trying to asses contemporary responses to early Christianity. Serious inquirers will find the literary, archaeological and sociological sources painstakingly analysed in Peter Lempe’s book on ‘Christians at Rome in the First Two Centuries from Paul to Valentinus', Continuum, (2003). wWat we have in Douglas Boin’s curiously entitled book are 149 pages of what amounts to a filtration of a very small part of the evidence through the sieve of the contemporary orthodoxies.Fair warning of this is given on the back cover, which is endorsed with recommendations by Reza Aslan (the author of a sensationalist book called ‘Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth’) and by Candida Moss, the author of ‘The Myth of Persecution: How Early Christians Invented a Story of Martyrdom’ . Ms.Moss receives gracious thanks from Mr. Boin in his Acknowledgements. The book is dedicated to the author’s sister, Katie; to her wife, Anne; and to Mr. Boin’s partner, Gardiner; and the epigraph from John Lewis Gaddis, declares that ‘Science, history and art’ share a common dependence on ‘metaphor, the recognition of patterns’ and ‘on the realisation that something is ‘like something else’ Elsewhere, Mr Boin quotes Mr Gaddis to the effect that ‘good historians take the past on its own terms first, and only then impose their own'. Mr.Boin admits frankly that this is his preferred method, and the book he has written bears out the fact.Mr Boin’s argument is that the literary record on which earlier generations relied gave them a deceptive picture of the facts. Writers in the conservative tradition, such as Tacitus himself, had a glacial disdain for the vulgar and ‘anti-social’ superstitions entertained by those who were either themselves foreign or traitors to their class and culture. Christian apologists, on the other hand, tended to be unrepresentative extremists of the opposite tendency. Mr Boin invites us to focus instead on the people to whom he refers in one chapter heading as‘The Quieter Ones’, and, in another, ‘The Neighbours who moved in Next Door’. He suggests that there really wasn't much to differentiate the average Christian from the average Graeco-Roman’ and that Christian refusal to reach an accommodation with the Graeco-Roman world was the exception rather than the rule.'This is an arguable idea: we all know, for example, that, even today, Christian culture is fractured and divided, both in its attitudes and in its practice. Mr. Boin rightly points out that as early as the days of St.Paul, there were significant divisions within single communities as to what was permissible - not least in defining of the relationship between Christians and 'the World'. We know, too. that many of today’s Christians do not, in fact, conform doctrinally with the orthodox positions maintained their clergy: that there are many younger Catholics who hold, for example, that gender orientation is mechanically determined; that sexual self-expression is primarily an issue of choice; that chemically induced contraception is, or should be uncontroversial; that priestly celibacy goes, almost by definition in hand with pederasty; and that the hierarchical structures of the Church are out of date and undemocratic and should, of that reason alone, be changed. They have imbibed from the popular culture that surrounds them a set of assumptions that they barely know how to question. But even Mr.Boin’s more sophisticated version of this thinking unreflectingly mirrors the prevailing polyculturalism of western democratic societies, especially America, and so it is not surprising that Boin should see same principles as characterising the Greaco-Roman empire of the Ancient Mediterranean. The fact that there is little archaeological evidence to support persecution, serves oddly, to persuade Mr Boin of his case. The close proximity of synagogue and ecclesia in a Syrian frontier town or may not suggest peaceful co-existence, but a graffito untypically preserved in a prosperous city at the heart of Empire and showing a crucified donkey with the caption 'Alexander worships his God' is a striking counter-statement - and is endorsed by the weight of the literary evidence.Mr Boin suggests, on the one hand, that the anathemas of Christian writers could only have been provoked by a widespread failure to conform with their prescriptions, whilst, on the other, evidence drawn from the hellenisation of a significant number of Jews and latin domestication of eastern mystery cults offers, for Boin, a natural analogy for the acculturation of early Christians to a system which he thinks most of admired and whose privileges he holds them to have been eager to share. Outbreaks of inter-community violence were, he suggests, untypical, and often provoked by social and financial pressures which had little to do with differences of faith save in so far as non-conformism could be given a political spin.Mr Boin goes s far as to say that ‘there is not one shred of evidence to suggest that Christians were ever systematically persecuted for their beliefs until the second half of the third century'. Tertullian, he says, may have 'felt' persecuted, 'but there is no legal evidence to confirm any early Christian ‘persecution’ until AD 253-60, a generation or more after Tertullian died’. (p.23). The words ‘systematic’, ‘persecution’ and the phrases ‘for their beliefs’ and ‘legal evidence’ need to be more carefully defined and weighed: they appear to exclude, for example the Neronian persecution (which Boin attributes to that Emperor’s ‘regrettable’ xenophobia), and the martyrdoms of, say, Saints Perpetua and Felicity (which Mr. Boin attributes to ‘refusal to participate’ in 'rituals for the well-being of Rome’).What this kind of language tends to obscure is the fact that the famous exchange between Pliny and Trajan, or the letter of Hadrian to Minucius Fundanus (Bettenson op.cit.loc.cit, p.7 - which Mr Boin does not quote) rests firstly, on the assumption that people felt that reporting Christians to the authorities would result in punitive action; secondly, that the authorities did not simply regard Christians as contemptible, but also as explicitly ‘criminal’; and thirdly, that the refusal of Christians to participate in popular rituals was indeed, unpopular with the mass of people and was regarded as ‘lese-majesté; by the authorities - and as such, a ‘criminal’ offence, whatever the legalities. Pliny says that when a Christian is bought before him his procedure is 'to ask them if they are Christians. If they admit it, I repeat the question, a second and a third time, threatening capital punishment; if they persist I sentence them to death'. Pliny makes it clear that what is at stake here is not so much the fact of being Christian ('whatever crime it may be to which they have confessed'), but 'pertinacity and obstinacy' in refusing to deny the fact'. In other words, what Pliny was doing was putting Christians to death for refusing to deny Christ - a pretty good definition of persecution on any reasonable interpretation,, and by no means the limited phenomenon that Mr.Boin suggests: numbers of Christians in the Empire in the second century may have been a tiny fraction of the whole, but on Pliny's evidence, this was not the case in its Anatolian heartlands. for he comments expressly that Christianity is wide spread, and he claims that as a result of his 'measures' - 'the temples, which have been almost deserted, are beginning to be frequented once more; that the sacred rites , which have been neglected, are being renewed, and that sacrificial victims are for sale everywhere, whereas, till recently, a buyer was rarely to be found' ( see Bettenson, op.cit., lc.cit, pp.3-5).The contemporary account of the martyrdoms of Perpetua and Felicity give a telling demonstration of Pliny's principles in action. Perpetua came from an important provincial family, but the Roman governor who tried her had no patience whatsoever with her attitude, and was quite clear as to where his duty lay; similarly, the fact that these two martyrs were put to death in an arena before a crowd of thousands baying for their blood does much to make one hesitant about subscribing to Mr.Boin’s jaunty optimism when he writes of a christian soldier martyr that ‘his Christian army buddies’ (who had conformed to pagan ritual) 'must have looked at him with bewilderment, bemusement and maybe even fear’: Who knows? Perhaps they did, but they may also have looked at him shame, embarrassment, and may be even the irritation which we all feel when we see other people publicly maintaining principles which we find it safer not to avow. The fact is despite the scholarship attested to by 35 pages of footnotes referring to the most up to date academic discussions about Christianity in antiquity, Mr.Boin’s dismissive attitude to primary sources blinds him to the facts that conscientious analysis might have yielded. That this dereliction of scholarship is conditioned by prejudice is evident from the general tone of Mr.Boin's approach. Referring to the Fathers, he repeatedly refers to them as 'fulminating', 'thundering' and 'shouting', but he himself has no time for the quieter pastoral of the 'shepherd of Hermas', the 'Didache', or Minucius Felix in all of whom are found a startling new, popular voice not hitherto heard in the mainstream of Graeco-Roman culture.Mr.Boin, who says that he has ‘for a long time felt uncomfortable around early Christians’ titles his Preface with the now celebrated remark by Pope Francis; “Who am I to Judge?’ and concludes his Afterword with reflections on the epiphany of Pope Francis in March 2012: “Some people saw in the crimson-clad men gathered about him, the blood of all the martyrs of early Christian history'. [Did they?] Others just saw red'. [Really?] What do I see now when I look back at 400 years of Jesus’ followers in Rome? I don’t just see the red of the martyrs. I see a group waving many colours’. [A rainbow coalition] In doing so he, and his book, conform with the orthodoxies of the day, and yet it is precisely these that work against a proper understanding of the very different world with which Mr..Boin purports to deal.

Instead of using broad-brush strokes, he paints the picture of the first four centuries of Christians in Rome with the fine pen acquired by examining the details of people’s daily lives using art, inscriptions, letters, literature, and archeological finds. To this, he juxtaposes the comments of the bishops of this budding religion who were often opposed to what ordinary people were doing. The reader feels as if she is there – deciding on whether to “come out” as a Christian or to continue to attend the civic festivals of Rome often deciding to do both – tell her friends, but go to the celebrations. Boin is able to take his academic knowledge and write a fascinating story that is very accessible.

In Defence of Harriet Shelley (Annotated), by Mark Twain

About the Author Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American humorist and writer, who is best known for his enduring novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has been called the Great American Novel. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain held a variety of jobs including typesetter, riverboat pilot, and miner before achieving nationwide attention for his work as a journalist with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He earned critical and popular praise for his wit and enjoyed a successful career as a public speaker in addition to his writing. Twain s works were remarkable for his ability to capture colloquial speech, although his adherence to the vernacular of the time has resulted in the suppression of his works by schools in modern times. Twain s birth in 1835 coincided with a visit by Halley s Comet, and Twain predicted, accurately, that he would go out with it as well, dying the day following the comet s return in 1910.

Fantastic example of Twain's biting, incisive sarcasm By DWD's Reviews Before reading this brilliant essay you must be familiar with Percy Bysshe Shelley, a 19th century English poet and perhaps, nowadays, most famous for being married to Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, the author of Frankenstein. His most famous bit of poetry in modern times is: "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"Before reading this essay, read a short online biography about Mr. Shelley so that you can follow along with some knowledge of the basics. Twain's essay is actually a long review of a biography of Shelley by Edward Dowden: Life of Shelley, a book that is extremely dismissive of Harriet Shelley, Percy Shelley's first wife - the one he left pregnant and with a child at home so that he could run away to Europe with Mary.In no way is Twain's essay fair towards Percy Shelley - it does not try to be and I do not think that it should be. It's hard to defend a man who leaves his pregnant wife for a teenage girl. Twain rips this section of the biography apart bit by bit. Twain's sarcastic bite is on full display here - commentary that is very often laugh out loud funny and very tender towards Harriet Shelley.

Book Review by Twain By TS This is Mark Twain's review of a then-popular book which (apparently) eulogized and excused Shelley's abandonment of his first wife, Harriett. It's a good example of Twain's critical writing, and in some ways of his moralizing, but not as sharply incisive as his better-known criticism; fans of Twain's invective should start somewhere else (I'd recommend his essay "Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offences," a critique of the Leatherstocking books).Only recommended for Twain scholars, not general readers.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A gallant defense By Kindle Customer Like many satirists who take aim at the powerful, whether individuals, institutions, or societal conventions, Twain had a streak of gallantry towards the defenseless. That gallantry takes front and center in this review of Dowden's famous biography of Shelley, in which Shelley's biographer defended his hero's abandonment of his first wife by painting her as a greedy shrew who, to put it in contemporary terms, wasn't good enough for him. While Twain generally admired Shelley as an individual, he makes it clear that he considered Shelley's behavior towards his first wife indefensible and that Dowden's attempted defense of that behavior to be absolutely reprehensible. He carefully dissects each of Dowden's charges and even more so, Dowden's skill at using weighted language and speculation to condemn her while pretending to be neutral.Strongly recommended not just for Twain's admirers but for anybody studying rhetoric, political writing, or debate technique.

Good beginners guide By Jo Tomlinson Meditation is a spiritual practice than can help to lift your spirits, helps you to accept the way life is for you and also has great effects on your brain to increase the power of it along with many other great uses. This practice does not just have to be used if you are troubled or stressed about anything it can be useful for everyone to practice as the real purpose is to calm the mind. I found this book had some great references with in it and particularly liked the explanation about how the Buddhists meditate and also enjoyed reading the short quotes throughout the book. It has a detailed explanation of how to meditate and the science behind it. I found this book to have a lot of detailed information in it about many aspects of meditation and would recommend it to anyone interested in the subject.

By Steve J I have read many books on meditation before but this one just made me realized the true importance of meditation and why one should not miss this golden chance of exploring this human birth. I have been practicing meditation from the past one year but was not regular due to some harsh conditions in life and now after reading this came to know what I really missed out.Meditation is best for body, mind and soul and one should definitely block out some time to meditate just for few minutes in both morning and evening. In the beginning it might be a little tough to sit as mind will run here and there but slowly and slowly after regular practice one can succeed. The science behind the meditation is one of the best chapters I read in this guide and I recommend this guide to all from my side.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book is a quick read on how meditation works. By Mimi Kidd They say meditation is good for you and that it is very easy to do. However, I can't seem a kind helping hand who can guide me on how to properly meditate. That said, I wasn't disheartened and did the researching as well as self-studying on my own. One of the few books that I got for learning meditation is this book. This book is a quick read on how meditation works. This is intended for beginners so it is mostly leaning on explanations more than direct how-to's. If you are looking to test the waters by learning or familiarizing yourself with meditation, this book should be a good choice. However, if you want to learn about meditation in-depth, you may want to skip this and get a book which is longer or which offers what you need.

David was a man after God's own heart . . .

What does it mean to be someone "after God's own heart?" David, King, psalmist and shepherd, gives us a picture with his own life.

In many ways he is an extraordinary role model, a man who was fully human but exceeded expectations and pointed others towards God. While the other side of David is most ordinary showing a life filled with destruction, chaos, tragedy and his personal struggle with sin. How then did David become the national hero of God's chosen people? Why is he the one character in the Bible described as "a man after God's own heart?" David's life offers hope to all of us. It shows that God can do extraordinary things through ordinary men and women. And David offers an insightful perspective on what it means to be truly a man, to become like David―men after God's own heart.

In this study David will delight and disappoint you. At times you will desire to be just like him while at others you will want to turn and run! The Life of David is one of the most colorful examples of manhood in all of Scripture. You will be introduced to select key characteristics of David's life but unlike David, we have time to make our lives right before God and to lovingly lead our homes.

This interactive study features eight weeks of individual study materials with a leader’s guide and suggested teaching plans at the back of the book.

From Brad During my tour of active duty in the US military, one of my close friends shared a few insights from a book on the life of David by AW Pink. It pricked my interest then and continues to influence my thinking today. This study is a result from continued learning and meditation on this fascinating man of God.

Next to Jesus, the Scriptures cover more of David's life than any other man. David, Israel's greatest king, is one of the most amazing men who ever lived. He is known as being a man after God's own heart (1 Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22) yet his life is filled with similar ups and downs as those faced by most men today. In some situations he displayed deep faith and trust in God while other times he sounds depressed and discouraged. In other situations he made horrible decisions that impacted his family, his work, and his community. Through all of his ups and downs, he still maintains his faith. Consequently, there are things in David's life which we should emulate and things which we should avoid. Therein lies the hope for God's men today.

This Bible study was developed to help you study the Scriptures, discover the greatness and flaws of this king, and make applications so you can emulate the godly parts of David’s life and avoid the harsh consequences of disobedience.

From Brian It is unique in the scriptures that we have the opportunity to get to know a character as well as we get to know David. Starting in chapter 16 of I Samuel and through the balance of this book, all of II Samuel and even in I Kings we see the life of David. Starting in chapter 11 of I Chronicles to the end in chapter 29 we read his story with different details. Approximately half the Book of Psalms is written by David and much of this corresponds with the events of his life. The life and works and writings of Solomon remind us of David as well. The quantity of text helps us see this man from his early days as a young son of Jesse to his final days as a father giving a charge to his own son.

The quantity of his story is helpful but it is the quality of the story that draws us to David. The scriptures give us access to private conversations and some of David’s inner most thoughts. We become acquainted with feats of bravery as well as moments of cowardice. We see a man who is tender and compassionate with others as well as the warrior who is ruthless against his enemies. The same man who passionately loves his God also has moments of denial and disconnect. The father and husband who is emotionally invested in his family is also the same man who abdicates his responsibilities resulting in significant dysfunction in his family and a questionable legacy.

All of this helps us relate to David and embrace him in many ways as a man we might follow. Who does not want to follow a charismatic leader that is fueled by genuine passion to serve the Living God? We each understand, like David, what it is like to have sweet moments of success and sour moments of personal failure. The honesty and transparency of the scriptures makes a bible study on the life of David so compelling. We study and digest true stories of a man who has gone before us. This bible study is designed to engage you with God and His Spirit through the story of a man He selected to follow Him and lead His people.

A study of the life of David will lead be a blessing to both men and women, old and young, mature or new in their faith. This imperfect man gives hope to the one who desires to follow and know the same One True God. The Apostle Paul, in his travels as a leader of the emerging Christian Church, references in Acts 13 how Samuel rebuked Saul and informed him that God had raised up a man after his own heart. This study is designed to point you in that same direction. It is our prayer that your heart, and not just your head, would turn to Almighty God as a result of your study.

Mark Lubbock Created with men in mind this bible study immediately engages your interest and attention. So many studies, while useful, fall way short in connecting with a man's soul. The journey through David's life is rich by itself, but when it is used to illustrate the application of biblical teaching it shifts from being a good story to becoming a blueprint of do's and don'ts. Men will instantly relate to this study which is THE PERFECT LENGTH! The topic is fleshed out well yet the study is of a length that makes it easy to commit to for today's man. The study approach generates thoughtful reflection on one's own life while keeping the action steps within reach of the average man. Written well, this study is still an easy read and one you will find yourself recommending over and over. RECOMMENDED.

By David Enslow Men will find this book useful for personal study, as a kind of scaffold around relationship building. They can then meet with a group of men to discuss and apply many Biblical, life principles, and develop spiritually alongside other men. This could be a good book for independent study, but why waste it on yourself? I highly recommend this for your for a men's small group. I especially like the "Discipleship Principle" at the end of each study. I hope we see more studies like this, with men in mind.

Every man can identify with numerous aspects of King David's life. Becoming a Man After God's Own Heart is appropriate for individual study but it's an even better resource for a few men who are willing and ready to examine their lives thoroughly and invite other men to sharpen them. Reminders about discipleship, repentance and scripture memory make it even stronger.
