What is an Executive Pastor (XP)? Are you wired to be an XP? How is an XP different than an Associate Pastor? Should XP's have a degree in pastoral ministry, business, or both? Does your church need an XP? What should a church look for in seeking to fill this often overlooked, undervalued, yet critical position? These and other questions are the focus of this short work on defining the Executive Pastor Role. Written with a brevity designed to allow you to read or skim quickly, you'll still find enough depth to provide meaningful direction and insight. Current and future XP's should read this book for definition. Potential XP's should read this book to clarify their calling. And church leaders considering hiring an XP should read this book before beginning their search. Forward by Mike Bonem, co-author of Leading From the Second Chair.

By Michael Scott As a youth pastor who is drawn to the administrative quality of ministry while still having a heart for the pastoral aspect of preaching and discipling believers, I have always been curious about the role of the Executive Pastor (XP) and if that is an avenue God could use someone like me in down the road. When I came across Phil Taylor’s book, I guess you could say I was hoping I would read it and completely hate the executive pastor position so I could rule it out of any future plans because I have been under XPs who have been overworked and under-appreciated and I obviously do not want that. But the opposite happened. The way Phil writes makes me feel like I am sitting across the table from him leaning back in my chair with a Dr. Pepper in hand and listening to him talk about his passion and calling. He uses first-hand illustrations and practical answers to convey the multi-faceted role of the Executive Pastor showing how depending on the personality and style of the lead pastor, many different personalities can assume the role of the XP. He is humorous and yet impactful in his points as he stresses the need of this vital role in the church. After this quick read, I came away from it encouraged knowing that not only were there other pastors who think like me and who have a passion to see the Kingdom of God grow by providing an administrative foundation for a lead pastor to dream, but that you can be an executive Pastor (with a capital P) with a pastor’s heart… which is something I never want to lose. I came away from the book even more open than before to God using me in this kind of role. I’m glad Phil Taylor wrote this book because it needed to be written for not only those striving to be better XPs or lead pastors writing job descriptions for their executives, but for those like me who may one day step into this role now equipped with the right tools to do it well.

By Scott Having served as an Executive Pastor for over 12 years I am thrilled to see this topic enter into the digital landscape. This is a perfect book for busy Lead Pastors (LP), Executive Pastors (XP) or church leadership looking to hire and XP position or maximize an existing ministry partnership . In it you will find some key strategies in building a great team for any size church. To be sure, the Executive Pastor role is nuanced and difficult to nail down to one definition, but Phil Taylor does a great job of narrowing the key traits of both the LP and XP that can make the person in the XP position and ministry a partnership thrive. The book gets right to the heart of the issues at hand, gives a common vernacular for discussion and is one of those leadership books that you will actually read over and over as church vision, direction, and staff change. It can also be a tremendous resource to open up a continuing and necessary dialogue between Lead Pastors and Executive Pastors as they attempt to maximize their unique giftings and passions for the good of the church.

Goyak I have gotten into the first few chapters of this book on defining the XP role and – WOW – it has hit most if not all of the questions that have been going on in my mind. I have served as an XP in my church for almost 2 years and have been having some “what in the world am I to be doing?” questions lately. It is not I am not busy, but what am I to be most busy about that truly helps my church and my lead pastor? His discussion about my relationship to my lead pastor was super helpful in helping me understand some thoughts in my own life with this role as it relates to my lead pastor and how I need to be viewing things differently. I needed the mind shift. It was an "aha" moment for me.Excellent book! Very insightful and parallel to where I am. I look forward to the remaining chapters, but wanted to give an early shout out of thanks.
