About the Author
Margaret Fetting, PhD, attended Rosemont College and received her baccalaureate degree from George Washington University and her master’s and doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania.
Fetting has been teaching courses and workshops on substance use disorders and addiction in southern California for over 25 years. She has been primarily affiliated with the School of Social Work at the University of Southern California, led the effort to develop substance use disorders courses for its online Virtual Academic Center. She is a visiting faculty member at the America College of Greece in Athens and a regular guest lecturer at the Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies.
Fetting has been in clinical private practice for over 25 years in Santa Monica. She specializes in the treatment of substance use disorders and addiction for individuals, couples, and families. She is affiliated with Clearview Treatment Programs and Milestones Ranch, both nationally-respected and multileveled treatment facilities in Southern California. Fetting addresses national and international audiences, has many articles in print, and published her first text, Perspectives on Addiction, in 2012 with SAGE Publishing Inc.

A CONSCIOUS, COMPASSIONATE AND SOPHISTICATED VOICE THAT REQUIRES AND DESERVES CLOSE ATTENTION By Amazon Customer This book is a conscious, compassionate and sophisticated voice in the psychological field of addiction that requires and deserves close attention, not only by professionals but for those struggling to understand and manage their interaction with mind-altering substances. Author Margaret Fetting, Ph.D., notes that “the doctrine of temperance is closely related to the concept of balance.” Her book is a VITAL BALANCE to prevailing models of pathology in the treatment of substance use. She brings a unique level of research, experience and scholarship to her subject, one that should not in any degree be marginalized.The book discusses an innovative and thereby controversial “symposium” approach, derived from ancient Greece. Why is referencing Greece relevant? It is, after all, the cradle of Western civilization! The author does not argue per se with the so-called medical model approach to treatment for addiction, but makes the salient point that it is actually just a fraction of the US population – only 3% as statistically concluded by the 2014 Centers for Disease Control – that are in fact psychologically and physically dependent; i.e., addicted to alcohol and/or other drugs (AOD). For the overwhelming rest, author Fetting is suggesting and encouraging the serious consideration of a much broader range of treatment approaches based on more relevant philosophical underpinnings that cite social influences on drug and alcohol use, such as “globalization” and “dislocation theory.” In this, she makes a highly convincing argument in favor of “a perspective that allows us to step away from our obsession with searching for pathology in our AOD habits,” effectively opening up the otherwise limited focus in the field of addiction beyond neuroscientific, genetic and biological forces.Moreover, in hearkening back to ancient Greece, the author recognizes and reminds us that “the desire for enjoyment and relief through alcohol and drugs is an ancient and natural part of the human experience.” This reader agrees that treatment practices that might be said to attempt to DISCONNECT patients from their valid human nature are highly counter-productive. As a psychotherapist in my own private practice, I note that it often seems to be a matter of disconnect that drives certain people to substitute relationship with a substance of choice to compensate for that painful disconnect.

By customer review In this new provocative and exciting perspective, Dr Fetting opens a space in our minds and in our culture to reexamine the notion of addiction.She reaches far beyond the disease concept, which at the time of its inception, was helpful to move addiction away from a moral failure.In this publication, Dr. Fetting introduces the "universal desire to escape reality" from ancient times to the present.Her highly nuanced approach makes room for all human kind to explore without judgment this very basic desire. No longer is the treatment approach "one size fits all", the author sets the stage for an understanding of the use and misuse of drugs and alcohol on a continuum, from partaking to abstinence, at the center of which each person can be seen as a unique individual surrounded by specific circumstances.As a clinician who has studied and reflected on these issues for many years, I welcome the 'reverie' that accompanies my work with patients who struggle to find their footing with their own use of substances. Dr. Fetting's passion, extensive research and beautifully written book on the subject continues to expand my own thinking and is a valuable contribution to the field.

An International sophisticated approach to the use and misuse of substances of pleasure By Amazon Customer I consider this book a very stimulating, valuable and provocative contribution to the field.Dr Fetting :A) discusses the personal joys and agonies involved in using substance of pleasure. She seeks and provides non extreme solutions to the issue of substance use. Indeed, human beings can find their own optimal solution between the simplistic extremes of heavy use and complete abstinence.B) demonstrates that this search for personal equilibrium in these ancient desires is in accordance to the individualistic, tolerant, humanistic philosophy based on individual freedom that originated in Ancient Greece and provides the basis of Western philosophy.C) examines methodically the theories and models that explain personal disequilibria in our relation with substances. The discussion of a plurality of models is necessary, since it is impossible for a single theory to provide an uncontested universal truth. A sophisticated interaction with a concern for personal characteristics determines the ideal model in each specific case study.D) provides practical guidelines for controlled use in accordance to individual preferences, characteristics and needs.
