And to have some fun, on the trail or in the armchair By Eric Scigliano How does a veteran science writer, thoroughly steeped in the scientific method, write about something that (this is me, not David Gordon, talking) almost surely doesn't exist, but which many, many people fervently believe or hope does? With a sympathetic, interested detachment that carries doubters and true believers along for a pleasant walk in the woods--complete with indelible pen, waterproof notebook, Zoom recorder, GIS, plaster for casting footprints, and all the other necessary gear. David (who, let it be disclosed, is an old pal---I edited some of his first articles, back when neither of us had gray hair) avoids the insistent claims and careful sifting of evidence and alleged evidence of the usual genres of Sasquatch writing. Instead he tries to prepare readers, mentally and practically, to conduct a credible search. And to have some fun, on the trail or in the armchair. If you haven't read his other books, you may not know that the man is one of world's great connoisseurs of the weird and wacky. My favorite aside in this book is "The Pangboche Hand," the tale of how, by substituting human finger bones, a British explorer stole a finger from the dessicated had of a supposed yeti jealously guarded in a Nepalese monastery. The actor Jimmy Stewart--George Bailey!--and his wife smuggled the finger to London in her lingerie. The paleontologist who examined it there thought it might be neanderthal. Years later its curators allowed a DNA test, which determined that the yeti/neanderthal was good ol' homo sapiens.Happy hunting.

Expanded edition of a now 23-year-old booklet By H.M. 2005 Author Gordon wrote a booklet in 1992 called Field Guide To The Sasquatch which examined the Sasquatch mystery in a basic primer which could be used in research areas mainly in the Pacific Northwest (the author seems to ignore reports from outside that region for some reason). This new edition expands on the original booklet by giving basic tips on field research as well as common sense tips for survival in rough environments. Also are tips on what to take in the field, the best areas to go, the best kind of food items that large predators can utilize and what kind of signs to look for of these creatures. Also there are websites listed that the newbie can go to, as well as an extensive bibliography of the best books to read on the subject and even movies and documentaries to watch. I would give this book a 9 out of 10, only because he does not give any credibility to sightings outside the Pacific Northwest.

Tired of trying to measure up? Trade your anxiety and frustration for rest and relaxation. Many of us believe that in order to please God, we have to be perfect. It’s an easy lie to buy into. In a culture that emphasizes accomplishment and ever-higher goals, we feel driven to do more, achieve more, be more. And we get caught up in the unforgiving treadmill of self-imposed rules, believing that we should, we need to, we must.   The result? Anger, frustration, and anxiety that keep us far away from the life of peace that Jesus promised.   For years, Sandra McCollom lived in this trap. Finally worn out from striving for perfection but constantly feeling like a failure, one day she prayed in desperation, begging God for help. God answered Sandra by setting her on a life-changing journey to discover the riches of His grace.   In I Tried Until I Almost Died, Sandra shares how she left behind her burden of anxiety and fear and shows you how to experience for yourself the freedom of trusting solely in the perfecting power of God’s grace.

In this book, she shares with honesty and openness how she learned to appropriate God’s grace into her life and experience more joy. . . . Sandra’s story helps us lay aside weights and encumbrances in order to be more effective in the challenges of life (Hebrews 12:1). Pondering these pages will remind you that it was for freedom that Christ set us free (Galatians 5:1). Her words will help you break away from unreasonable perfectionism and begin to excel in the mercy and love of God.”- Pastors Jeff and Patsy Perry, St. Louis Family Church (Sandra’s pastors)“I had the privilege of personally hearing Sandra share her journey of being completely liberated by God’s amazing grace. I am thrilled that you, too, can now hear her story. I have no doubt that you will experience the transformative power of knowing our wonderful Lord Jesus as you see what He has done for Sandra in her own life.”- Joseph Prince international best-selling author of The Power of Right Believing and senior pastor of New Creation Church “In this book, Sandra shares her journey of learning to walk daily in God’s grace and live for His pleasure. When we discover what a wonderful, loving Father we have in God, we can experience a life filled with joy and peace. Our loving Father said, ‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness’ (2 Corinthians 12:9). Whatever your heavy load is today, bring it to the Lord. You are His child, and He delights to care for you. May Sandra’s story inspire you to draw near and trust Him today.”-James and Betty Robison, co-hosts of LIFE Today television“I love Sandra McCollom and have watched the message of this book literally transform her life. And while some people can relate to it - it is almost a guarantee that legalism has somehow not crept into our lives and grace has taken a backseat.G R A C EA simple word but yet a profound and beyond our understanding to grasp how powerful it is. And Sandra has done just that as she waved the while flag an invited God to her rescue. Grace is not for the ‘perfect’ people who have it all together – it a free gift to us by our loving and gracious Father. If you are looking for a deep book theologically then you will have find another one but if you are in the trenches of life, leaving in fear, and frustration then she has something to share with you. She had me with the first few words in chapter 1: “From as far back as I can remember until age forty-two, I lived in a prison – not one built of bricks and mortar, but a mental prison, locked up by legalism, rules, and regulations”.It’s as if she’s been reading my mail. That described me and further in the book ended up realizing that I am been leaving a legalistic lifestyle trying to ‘do’ all that I can to please God but never measuring up. And frustration can quickly set in and because she has been there she’s able to hold our hands as we take the shackles off and come to the light of grace. You will find her prayers that she prayed to God during the process of relying on God’s grace and letting Him take the wheels of her life and as she gently followed and continue to do so.If you’d ask me if I was leaving under the law- would think you were crazy but God has graciously been taking the scales off where I do not have to perform to earn His love. Are you need in of some grace? Do you need to return to living in God’s grace? Are you tired of not measuring up? Is peace lacking in your life?Do yourself a favor and grab a copy of this book. I promise you that you will not be the same person when you turn the last page. Just like her life was transformed on that faithful January 2, 2012 – yours can too. Let today be the day. “I received this book from the Blogging for Books program in exchange for this review.”

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. different and interesting take on martial arts By J. Cepeda This books covers some of the many misconceptions people may have about martial arts. The information is thorough for the most part although there are some areas that seem glossed over.In general it's a worthwhile read. The chapter on Bruce Lee was welcome as well and a nice final closure.I definitely recommend this specially if you are trying to make sense of the different types of martial arts available. The book is a fast read and held my interest throughout.Enjoy

A much needed dose of reality By Rico Overall this is a good book injecting some much needed reality into the many myths that surround the martial arts. The information is presented well by someone who clearly has good martial arts experience and knowledge. As someone with almost fifty years of involvement in the the martial arts and over forty years at black belt rank myself, I fully agree with the vast majority of the information presented, and it is appreciated that the author has prepared such a good presentation. My only criticism of the book is in regard to possible omissions in regard to the two sections dealing with Bruce Lee and the use of a knife in self defense. In regard to Bruce Lee, an expanded discussion of Jeet Kune Do (JKD) would have possibly presented a more balanced assessment. It is certainly true that Bruce Lee was not a tournament competitor and his public persona was extremely exaggerated. However, his research of fighting techniques and ultimate development of his personal art of JKD were significant and real achievements. Consistent with the theme of this book, the development of JKD was largely a result of Bruce Lee rejecting the many myths that surround the traditional martial arts and his pursuit of a more genuine fighting system. It is necessary to separate the theatrical martial techniques used by Mr. Lee in films from the very practical fighting art of JKD that he developed, and that distinction could have been expanded upon.In regard to the use of knives, I fully agree with the author that someone simply picking up a knife and carrying it for self defense is foolhardy. However, a more balanced presentation might have included acknowledgement that several martial arts (e.g. the Filipino combat systems and Krav Maga) include training in very practical use of the knife. With proper training, the knife is an extremely effective weapon and should not be dismissed.Again, a well written book on a much needed topic and worth reading.

Taking steps to protect oneself and keep fit in the interim makes a lot of sense. Hearing the author's story makes me see the reality of the dangers of this world and what you need to know to be safe without resorting to weapons. Knowing that stereotypical martial arts in themselves are not the answer is an eye-opener. It is important to make the distinction between them and defensive disciplines. This book does it. You get a lot of information and advice.

Wheat, that staple of our diet is frowned on these days, so the recipes in this book are all non-wheat recipes with the purpose of reducing one’s belly. It turns out the recipes are low carb, gluten, sugar and wheat free and even grain free. I’ve tried a few of the recipes and they are delicious and thanks to the author, Betty Moore, I learned some things about grains that for one, they are not that good for a person. I liked how the recipes have nutritiional information such as serving size, calories, fat, carbs, fiber and protein. Also their are pretty detailed directions for the cooking impaired like myself. Being a vegetarian who occasionally eats seafood, I ignored several of these recipes that included meat products, but did like the Mexicana Chili, Fish Tacos, Heirloom Tomato Sandwich and a Pumpkin French Toast Casserole. If you’re a meat eater, there are plenty to choose from and even a veggie like myself, I can pick and choose and even substitute for many. Betty Moore is obviously a very good cook and has some real winners here.

Very useful read and so yummy recipes By Faith Winters This book aims to empower you with powerful dieting plan that cuts through the misinterpretations, misconceptions, misleading marketing, and bad science that passes as nutritional and health information. If you eliminate wheat from your diet you will learn why going wheat-free is more than getting rid of the belly, but rather about putting your health in the best possible position it can be through all season. This amazing book provides recipes to make this transition as smoothly as possible with tricks and tips that have helped so many people. I like that this book provides the nutritional information about each meal and I think a cookbook for diet shouldn't lack this section.

Perspectives on Substance Use, Disorders, and Addiction: With Clinical Cases, by Margaret Fetting

Review "The human condition is one that destines us to alternate between states of contentment, discomfort, distress, and, worst of all, unbearable suffering. Alcohol and other drugs (AODs) can enhance, alter, and relieve such feeling states. Margaret Fetting in this wonderfully nuanced and sophisticated book explores and explains how and why this is so dating back to ancient times up to the present. Professor Fetting richly explores the historical, cultural, social, and clinical contexts, and related theories, of intoxicant use in pursuing her special perspective. Throughout the book she provides compelling case vignettes that richly illustrate the various situations in which we use AODs adaptively and maladaptively. She is passionate about her subject matter; her writing style is evocative, and she builds a compelling narrative for why the desire for AODs is enjoyable for most, problematic for some, and devastating for a few. After pondering, studying, and treating these problems now approaching five decades I find her approach and perspective very refreshing because it takes me beyond my own models and paradigms for understanding, at the same time it provides me with a more flexible basis to better appreciate the wide range of use that AODs take in all its variant normal and pathological forms." E. J. Khantzian, MD., Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School; Founder of the Self-Medication Hypothesis "Margaret Fetting has produced an excellent and encompassing harm reduction perspective on drug use, abuse, and treatment for the globalized twenty-first century.” Bruce Alexander, Simon Fraser University, author of "The Globalization of Addiction: The Rise and Fall of the Official View of Addiction.""Perspectives on Substance Use, Disorders, and Addiction, by Margaret Fetting is a special textbook for the beginning student and the experienced practitioner alike. It is intended as a thought-provoking overview of what is most cutting edge in thinking and clinical practice about substance use along the spectrum from non-problematic through addictive. This book is radical in acknowledging what we all know, that people have used substances for their positive effects from the beginning of time. It is ambitious in suggesting that we must consider many factors in any honest, disciplined attempt to understand how and why substance use becomes so devastating for individuals and society: globalization and other socio-cultural factors, individual cultural and family history, learning, personal meaning and self-medication of suffering. Fetting introduces each of these areas clearly and succinctly. Her overarching philosophy for helping is harm reduction, an approach that is fully committed to seeing each individual who struggles with substance use issues as a unique human in unique circumstances who needs help that is collaboratively tailored to them. The ideas in this book are brought to life with powerful case vignettes and student contributions that bring the reader into real people’s lives. I have learned much that I am already using in my teaching and clinical work. I know you will too. Enjoy!" Andrew Tatarsky, PhD., Author, Harm Reduction Psychotherapy: A New Treatment for Drug and Alcohol Problems"Dr. Margaret Fetting's book is essential reading for students, clinicians, and those who suffer from alcohol and substance use disorders. Fetting traces the ancient roots of the human wish to become intoxicated, and, without judgment, puts that desire into a modern context. For the past 80 years, the U.S. has relied on a one-size-fits-all treatment for a complex set of problems, and Fetting presents flexible and innovative approaches for addiction and substance-use disorders at a time when Americans are desperate for alternatives -- for themselves, their loved ones, and their clients. This highly readable, engaging book is essential for clinicians, faculty and students of addiction and also those who struggle with substance- and alcohol-use disorders themselves." Gabrielle Glaser, New York Times bestselling author of "Her Best-Kept Secret: Why Women Drink -- And How They Can Regain Control."

A CONSCIOUS, COMPASSIONATE AND SOPHISTICATED VOICE THAT REQUIRES AND DESERVES CLOSE ATTENTION By Amazon Customer This book is a conscious, compassionate and sophisticated voice in the psychological field of addiction that requires and deserves close attention, not only by professionals but for those struggling to understand and manage their interaction with mind-altering substances. Author Margaret Fetting, Ph.D., notes that “the doctrine of temperance is closely related to the concept of balance.” Her book is a VITAL BALANCE to prevailing models of pathology in the treatment of substance use. She brings a unique level of research, experience and scholarship to her subject, one that should not in any degree be marginalized. The book discusses an innovative and thereby controversial “symposium” approach, derived from ancient Greece. Why is referencing Greece relevant? It is, after all, the cradle of Western civilization! The author does not argue per se with the so-called medical model approach to treatment for addiction, but makes the salient point that it is actually just a fraction of the US population – only 3% as statistically concluded by the 2014 Centers for Disease Control – that are in fact psychologically and physically dependent; i.e., addicted to alcohol and/or other drugs (AOD). For the overwhelming rest, author Fetting is suggesting and encouraging the serious consideration of a much broader range of treatment approaches based on more relevant philosophical underpinnings that cite social influences on drug and alcohol use, such as “globalization” and “dislocation theory.” In this, she makes a highly convincing argument in favor of “a perspective that allows us to step away from our obsession with searching for pathology in our AOD habits,” effectively opening up the otherwise limited focus in the field of addiction beyond neuroscientific, genetic and biological forces. Moreover, in hearkening back to ancient Greece, the author recognizes and reminds us that “the desire for enjoyment and relief through alcohol and drugs is an ancient and natural part of the human experience.” This reader agrees that treatment practices that might be said to attempt to DISCONNECT patients from their valid human nature are highly counter-productive. As a psychotherapist in my own private practice, I note that it often seems to be a matter of disconnect that drives certain people to substitute relationship with a substance of choice to compensate for that painful disconnect.

By customer review In this new provocative and exciting perspective, Dr Fetting opens a space in our minds and in our culture to reexamine the notion of addiction. She reaches far beyond the disease concept, which at the time of its inception, was helpful to move addiction away from a moral failure. In this publication, Dr. Fetting introduces the "universal desire to escape reality" from ancient times to the present. Her highly nuanced approach makes room for all human kind to explore without judgment this very basic desire. No longer is the treatment approach "one size fits all", the author sets the stage for an understanding of the use and misuse of drugs and alcohol on a continuum, from partaking to abstinence, at the center of which each person can be seen as a unique individual surrounded by specific circumstances. As a clinician who has studied and reflected on these issues for many years, I welcome the 'reverie' that accompanies my work with patients who struggle to find their footing with their own use of substances. Dr. Fetting's passion, extensive research and beautifully written book on the subject continues to expand my own thinking and is a valuable contribution to the field.

An International sophisticated approach to the use and misuse of substances of pleasure By Amazon Customer I consider this book a very stimulating, valuable and provocative contribution to the field.Dr Fetting :A) discusses the personal joys and agonies involved in using substance of pleasure. She seeks and provides non extreme solutions to the issue of substance use. Indeed, human beings can find their own optimal solution between the simplistic extremes of heavy use and complete abstinence.B) demonstrates that this search for personal equilibrium in these ancient desires is in accordance to the individualistic, tolerant, humanistic philosophy based on individual freedom that originated in Ancient Greece and provides the basis of Western philosophy.C) examines methodically the theories and models that explain personal disequilibria in our relation with substances. The discussion of a plurality of models is necessary, since it is impossible for a single theory to provide an uncontested universal truth. A sophisticated interaction with a concern for personal characteristics determines the ideal model in each specific case study.D) provides practical guidelines for controlled use in accordance to individual preferences, characteristics and needs.

“My name is Ken and I will be your waiter for a long, long time . . .” That’s how Ken Untener introduced himself to the more than 6,000 people who attended his ordination as bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw, Michigan, on November 24, 1980. The purpose of this book is to let Ken Untener tell the story of his vocation, priesthood, and ministry in his own words. And (ever the teacher), he often used stories of his life as a way to deliver a message from the Scripture and the strength of his faith. This book is not a memoir. Ken did a lot of preaching and rarely used a prepared text, but often recorded his homilies and talks on a microcassette recorder tucked in his pocket. He spoke from his heart and he used examples from everyday life, sometimes even using an incident that had just happened to him that day.

Topics to ponder from a remarkable man By John's view Bishop Untener had the ability to see Christian values in many settings and to relate these experiences in homily's and presentations. This is the kind of book you will want to spend some time with. That is to say; I found myself laying the book down and reflecting on what I had just read. You will find parallels in some of your experiences and more importantly take away ideas on how you might approach those yet to come..

Just as the Old Testament book of Genesis begins with creation, where humans live in the presence of their Lord, so the New Testament book of Revelation ends with an even more glorious new creation where all of the redeemed dwell with the Lord and his Christ. The historical development between the beginning and the end is crucial, for the journey from Eden to the new Jerusalem proceeds through the land promised to Abraham. The Promised Land is the place where God's people will once again live under his lordship and experience his blessed presence. In this stimulating study from the New Studies in Biblical Theology series, Oren Martin demonstrates how, within the redemptive-historical framework of God's unfolding plan, the land promise advances the place of the kingdom that was lost in Eden. This promise also serves as a type throughout Israel's history that anticipates the even greater land, prepared for all of God's people, that will result from the person and work of Christ and that will be enjoyed in the new creation for eternity. Addressing key issues in biblical theology, the works comprising New Studies in Biblical Theology are creative attempts to help Christians better understand their Bibles. The NSBT series is edited by D. A. Carson, aiming to simultaneously instruct and to edify, to interact with current scholarship and to point the way ahead.

Bound for the Promised Land (New Studies in Biblical Theology), by Oren Martin

Review "This book is a tremendous example of a diachronic, biblical-theological study of the Bible. Martin does a wonderful job surveying the biblical landscape while incorporating a broad range of opinions from contemporary scholarship. . . . Martin's argument is too comprehensive and coherent to be disregarded. I recommend it to all who would dare to have their presuppositions challenged and minds sharpened. This is an excellent book." (Casey B. Hough, The Renewed Church, May 26, 2015)"Bound for the Promised Land is an insightful work that will lead to much flipping back and forth in readers' Bibles as they go through it. I enjoyed making some new notes and re-highlighting some key points. Martin's exegesis is solid, and the work is great for those interested in eschatology and biblical prophecy. By putting together a book focused exclusively on the land promise from a perspective that takes seriously the whole of biblical teaching on the topic, Martin has done a service for those interested in eschatology. I recommend it as a worthy read." (J.W. Wartick, "Always Have a Reason", June 24, 2015)"Revised and condensed from Martin's dissertation, the book is the most recent release in IVP's 'New Studies in Biblical Theology' series. While various studies have focused on the theme of land in the Pentateuch and Joshua, not many carry the theme through the Davidic Covenant and the prophetic literature, let alone the New Testament. Martin's work thus seeks to trace the land theme throughout the entire Bible, rooted in fundamental assumptions about Scripture's authority, theological continuity and the need for a grammatical-historical method of interpretation with a view toward canonical fulfillment." (Andrew J.W. Smith, Towers, April 2015)"Theologies of 'the land' of Israel have taken various forms. One thinks of earlier works, such as the magisterial tome by W. D. Davies that was descriptively rich but did not attempt a biblical synthesis. Of course, there have also been many contributions that attempt to tie the various 'land' promises to the re-founding of the nation of Israel more than half a century ago. Dr Martin paints his biblical theology of the land on a grander scale. He argues that the land promises constitute part of a trajectory that begins with the loss of 'land' at the expulsion from Eden and ends, finally, in the new heaven and the new earth. The resulting synthesis of the land promises, kingdom promises and eschatology is thought-provoking and sometimes moving." (From the preface by D. A. Carson)"This book is a tremendous example of a diachronic, biblical-theological study of the Bible. Martin does a wonderful job surveying the biblical landscape while incorporating a broad range of opinions from contemporary scholarship. He argues his case clearly and convincingly without being overly polemical. He does not overstate his position, and shows great respect for those with whom he disagrees. . . . Martin's argument is too comprehensive and coherent to be disregarded. I recommend it to all who would dare to have their presuppositions challenged and minds sharpened." (Casey Hough, Journal for Baptist Theology and Mission, Spring 2016)

About the Author Oren Martin (PhD, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is assistant professor of Christian theology at Boyce College at Southern Seminary. Previously, Martin served as professor of theology at Northland International University. Additionally, he has served as a minister and on staff for the Council of Biblical Manhood and Womanhood. Martin has written articles and book reviews for various publications including the Journal of Evangelical Theological Society, Trinity Journal, the Journal for Biblical Manhood and Womanhood and the Gospel Coalition. An Excellent Example of a Biblical-Theological Study of God's Word By Casey In chapter 1, on page 17, Martin writes, “The aim of the present study is to demonstrate that the land promised to Abraham advances the place of the kingdom that was lost in Eden and serves as a type throughout Israel's history that anticipates the even greater land - prepared for all of God's people throughout history - that will calm as a result of the person and work of Christ.” In short, he states, “The land and its blessings find their fulfillment in the new heaven and new earth won by Christ” (17). Methodologically, Martin employs biblical theology in a diachronic fashion to prove his thesis. The rest of the chapters (2-9) survey the relevant biblical text before concluding in chapter 10 with a brief theological reflection upon the implications of the study. This book is a tremendous example of a diachronic, biblical-theological study of the Bible. Martin does a wonderful job surveying the biblical landscape while incorporating a broad range of opinions from contemporary scholarship. He argues his case clearly and convincingly without being overly polemical. He does not overstate his position, and shows great respect for those with whom he disagrees. Specifically, Martin makes a strong case for understanding the land promises of the Old Testament in light of their typological relationship to the Edenic land of Genesis 1-2 and their subsequent fulfillment in the New Testament. Any serious attempt to argue for the future, literal fulfillment of land promises to a national Israel must interact with Martin’s biblical-theological argument. If it does not, then it is not worth our attention. Martin’s argument is too comprehensive and coherent to be disregarded. I recommend it to all who would dare to have their presuppositions challenged and minds sharpened. This is an excellent book.

Good, but Could Have Been Great By Todd Burus I am a big fan of this series and was very excited to see an offering that traces the theme of the Promised Land throughout Scripture. This book is a nice companion to Beale's temple offering in the same series. Appreciated the author's thorough review of the Promised Land motif from Genesis to Revelation. My only critique is that I feel the author could have done more in his applications. It was disappointing that he focused more on criticizing the failures of Dispensationalism (which the majority of Christians have already realized) than instructing Christians on how the search for the Promised Land continues in them today and will eventually find it's realization in the New Heavens and New Earth.

A Typology of the Promised Land By Phillip Long This new addition to New Studies in Biblical Theology is a detailed study of the Promised Land as a canonical link from Eden to Kingdom. The land theme is important because it connects various biblical covenants into a developing story of typological fulfillment of God’s plan to redeem humankind. As is often observed, the kingdom described in Revelation is very much like the Garden of Eden. Martin shows how the beginning and the end are connected through the entire grand narrative of Scripture. Quoting Jon Levenson, Martin quips “eschatology is like proctology;” the beginning corresponds to the end (56). But each successive stage in God’s redemptive plan escalates the typology so that the end of the story is not just a restored Eden on earth, but an entirely new Heaven and Earth. In the first two chapters Martin develops his view that the Promised Land is a typology found throughout the canon. Beginning with the creation story, he traces the development of God’s redemptive plan, arguing Eden is the ideal kingdom ruled by God. Humans rebel against the king in the Fall and the effects of sin separate humans from God. The rest of the Bible is therefore the story of God’s plan of redemption. God is “reestablishing his kingdom through covenant” (42). These covenants (Noahic, Abrahamic, Mosaic, Davidic, and the New Covenant) are something like stages in God’s plan to restore Eden in the eschatological Kingdom of God. With respect to the New Covenant, Martin point to Jesus’ preaching of the presence of the Kingdom in his ministry as an “already established” restoration of Eden in the church. Yet he sees a still future new creation and kingdom coming in the eschatological age.Having offered something of a sketch of the whole canon in chapter 2, Martin then provides the details of this developing typology on in chapters 3-9. For much of the Old Testament the promise of restoration is a future hope. While it is true Abraham does dwell in the Promised Land and the Israelites eventually return to the Eden-like Promised Land, the glorious return of Eden remains a tantalizing hope for a future restoration from exile. The promised restoration of God’s rule is in some ways “already” fulfilled, but in other important aspects, “not yet” fulfilled. The hoped-for restoration from the Exile was inaugurated in the person and work of Christ. While it is difficult to trace Promised Land themes in the teaching of Jesus (117), Martin suggests Jesus’ preaching of the kingdom was an inauguration of the Kingdom and the promise of the land finds its fulfillment in Jesus. This is not a radically new suggestion, although it is critical for some of the theological reflections later in the book.Martin attempts to find this same sort fulfillment in the epistles as well. There is, however, little in the Epistles that could possibly be taken as typology of the Land Promise. I found the brief material on Paul to be unrelated to a typology of Land, but Hebrews clearly uses a typological method and describes Jesus as a fulfillment of the whole Old Testament, including the rest Israel experienced when they entered the Land. Canaan is functioning typologically in Heb 3:7-4:13, for example, and there is a shift in chapters 12-13 from Sinai to Zion. More work is needed here since it is not clear from Hebrews that the fulfillment of the Land Promise to Abraham is wholly exhausted in the person and work of Jesus. The book would have been better served to omit everything except the material on Hebrews.Martin describes the fulfillment of the promise in the book of Revelation, the shortest chapter in the book despite the fact Revelation has strong typological ties to the restoration of the Promised Land to God’s people. Martin’s focus in this chapter is almost entirely on the New Jerusalem and new creation as a restoration of the Edenic Temple. While this critique falls under the category “I would have written this part differently,” I do think Martin has missed a great deal which could support his overall thesis by limiting his brief comments in this way. For example, there is a great deal of “new exodus” language in Revelation, especially in the sequence of seven trumpets. The call to leave Babylon in Rev 17-18 could be understood as an allusion to the call to return from exile and return to the Land in Isaiah 40-66.In the final chapter, Martin makes a series of theological reflections on the Promised Land. The thrust of his chapter seems to be to distance this study from Dispensationalism. In fact, as I was reading the book, I thought at many points Martin was a dispensationalist, or at least speaking in ways which resonate with the more academic dispensational theology usually described as “progressive dispensationalism.”Dispensationalists maintain a distinction between Israel and the Church even in the present age and argue the Abrahamic covenant was unconditional and not wholly fulfilled in either the Old Testament nor in the Church. They look forward to a real fulfillment of the “land promise” in a future, literal kingdom of God. Since Martin’s study argues the Land Promise is fulfilled typologically in the work of Christ, the Church becomes God’s new covenant people. Yet Martin does say “all God’s promises find their ultimate fulfillment in the person and work of Christ as the culmination of God’s revelation and redemptive plan” (170), so there is still a future new creation which will continue (conclude?) the typological pattern of Eden. To my mind, this is an arbitrary limit placed Martin’s principle of typology expressed early in the book. If each successive use of a typology escalates, then the final restoration after the Parousia ought to be the most complete fulfillment possible. Dispensationalists include a restoration of Israel as God’s people in this ultimate fulfillment of the promise, Martin does not.Conclusion. Martin has certainly delivered on his promise to create a biblical theology of the Promised Land. This book argues for the Land as a typological link throughout the various covenants of the Old Testament, covenants that find their fulfillment in the person of Jesus. Martin has contributed to the discussion of the over-arching plot of the whole Bible by pointing to the restoration of Eden as a possible controlling typology.NB: Thanks to Intervarsity Press for kindly providing me with a review copy of this book. This did not influence my thoughts regarding the work.

In this booklet are the beginning instructions for Mettà or Loving-kindness Meditation, as part of the 'Practice of the Brahmaviharas' - which Bhante Vimalaramsi calls Tranquil Wisdom Insight Meditation or TWIM when practiced exactly from earliest Buddhist teachings. The way Bhante teaches this meditation practice yields very fast results. The warm, happy feeling of Loving-kindness, and the 6Rs practice system Bhante has discovered based on right-effort, gives you deep and profound states of meditation in only a matter of weeks or even days, when practiced consistently. Did you know Loving-kindness will take you deeper much faster than doing Breath Meditation? This booklet gives the preliminary instructions for the practice of Metta and how to handle hindrances. This practice can be brought into your daily life and helps with all your life/work situations and to the many relationships you have. Mindfulness is re-defined here that yields the attainment of the what Bhante calls the Tranquil Aware Jhanas. Through this practice, you can experience those deep states within days or weeks, not years or decades. Even just sitting at home. Bhante has students he has never met or taken a retreat who have gone all the way to awakening by using this system at home. Everything is here, and in detail, with many tips and examples, to get the meditator on his way to experiencing awakening in this very life. For more than 40 years Bhante Vimalaramsi researched and practiced many methods without finding any real satisfaction. He went back to the earliest Buddhist teachings, using the Majjhima Nikaya and found what he was seeking. He found the step that had been left out! Find out what that is (hint- to 'tranquilize'). Bhante Vimalaramsi's method of “The 6Rs", is the key to the step he found, which is the "Relax" step. In the suttas, it is called "Tranquilize." Once you learn this practice you can continue by going to Bhante's website and doing online retreats from home or visiting his center one of the retreats around the world he conducts. Bhante Vimalaramsi has been a monk since 1986 and practiced with many of the major Buddhist teachers in Asia. He now teaches all over the world and is the abbot of the Dhamma Sukha Meditation Center near St. Louis, Mo, USA. He is the US representative to the World Buddhist Summit.

The author claims it’s a principal path to enlightenment that rivals or surpasses the familiar mindfulness of breathing practice which was also taught by the Buddha. Considering the fact this book is under fifty pages, it’s amazing the number of basic concepts touched upon, from posture to hindrances as the author describes the steps involved in what he calls “Tranquil Wisdom Insight Meditation (T.W.I.M.)” which is a loving kindness meditation. As bonus the author discusses 6 R’s to keep your practice on point, and a walking meditation to re-energize it.Looking for a brief description to establish a mindful meditation practice? Here’s a wonderful candidate. What could be better than loving kindness?

The work on T.W.I.M is comprehensible thoroughly thought out. It is such a wonderful work. The instructions on Loving Kindness/Metta is very clear and doable in both meditation practice and in daily life. It is the kind of info I am currently looking for. It sure will keep me busy for awhile by this practice.Reading the book, I now understand that my reacting to the sleepiness(in the past) was an incorrect act (unwholesome behaviors). Of course, I don't do it anymore, it was just some personal experiments see if I can keep the mind straight/awakes and not fall into the temptation, I knew then it just didn't work. I am a night person, I get more sleepiness during early morning meditations compared to afternoon sits. So, I am more favorably inclined toward late afternoon sitting rather than morning. I do exercise before my meditation though, eg: stretchings and some forms of light yoga’s postures, all for the purpose of stretching my lower limbs. My next goal is practicing Metta, bring in 6-R into my meditation practices, be able to detect tensions and tightness when my dear friend “sleepiness” or other kind of hindrance(s) pays a visit and be able to welcome it and learn not take it personally rather than make it as an impersonal thing. I will have fun doing it, now that I have a clearer goal.A great handy book to have to keep your practices in check, keep up your good work. Thanks so much!
