In When You Feel Like Strangling The Patient (Love and Support for the Caregiver), author Lauren Simon gives voice to the frustration, confusion, and anger that caregivers feel but are often afraid to express. When her husband Stephen Simon (film producer of What Dreams May Come and Somewhere in Time) barely survived a heart attack during which his heart stopped four times, Ms. Simon quickly learned how little practical, do-this-now information was available to those who are thrust into the role of caregiver. As she lovingly helped her husband convalesce (and their six adult children cope with the trauma they too had experienced), she was shocked to find how many powerful emotions she and other caregivers feel but rarely discuss. With humor, compassion, and vulnerability, Lauren wrote her book to empower caregivers all over the world to openly embrace and share their own feelings.

Review “An amazing true story of conscious loving in action! After being plunged suddenly into the role of caregiver, author Lauren Simon was shocked to discover how many conflicting emotions of love, compassion, frustration, confusion, and even anger caregivers experience but too often feel that they should not even think, let alone express. Lauren has gifted us all with this wonderful book—filled with humor, compassion and vulnerability. A must-read for compassionate caregivers and the people who know them, this book will serve to empower caregivers all over the world to embrace openly and share all of their feelings." Stallings, Author of Shepherd Starseeker Lauren combines humor, compassion, and practical exercises into this heartfelt self-help book that’s perfect for anyone who suddenly finds themselves in the role of caregiver. Her willingness to share her personal stories and insights, as well as those of others, helps the reader to embrace and overcome their own vulnerabilities, resentments, doubts, or fears. Caregivers get tips on how to establish healthy boundaries while providing quality care to their loved ones in need. Throughout her journey, she reminds the reader that in every crises, there is a wealth of love lessons that are given and received. As she so beautifully puts it, “… it is the sweet, simple gestures in life that mean the most to the heart and soul.”

Because when you do need it - you can't focus on anything. It's also for those of us who don't 'need it' today. Lauren Simon writes simply, clearly and honestly about her rollercoaster ride as her husband's caregiver after his heart attack(s). She gives links for services like Caring Bridge, lists of things to do to take care of yourself as the caregiver, and advice for the little things that make you fall apart. She tells us what we as the people who love the caregivers can do to ease their burden. And what not to do.It's an easy read if you're not under stress. And it puts things into perspective if you are. I liked it. A lot actually. And it is likely to be one of those books that I buy and give as needed over the next 20 years.

This book may save your life, before AND/OR after any major health event, no matter which end of the issue you're on. Engaging from the first page, heartfelt sincerity, frankness, and humor, guide the caregiver through the trials of two lives: one who lies flat on the bed in recovery; the other who suffers the physical and emotional slings and arrows of nursing a loved one back to health. A must read, no matter your stage of life, to be forewarned is to be forearmed. And husband, Stephen Simon, writes one of the most beautiful and loving forwards to this terrific book. HIGHLY recommended.
