About the Author Shihan Kousaku Yokota, eighth dan, is a professional karateka with extensive experience in various martial arts. With over fifty years of training in Shotokan karate, he specializes in Asai Ryu Bujutsu karate. His wide range of experience includes training in kobudo (nanasetsukon and nunchaku), in the art of ki, and in the breathing method by Nishino Ryu Kikojutsu. He was a member of the JKA for forty years and then joined the JKS for seven years. In 2013, he founded his organization, ASAI (Asai Shotokan Association International [www.asaikarate.com]) to honor Master Tetsuhiko Asai. Shihan Yokota travels extensively around the world to share the knowledge and techniques of Asai Ryu karate. He is also a main contributor at Karate Coaching (www.karatecoaching.com), where he extends his karate teaching through Internet media.

So, I understand if that means my review may be assumed to include at least a small degree of bias.This is another great work by Kousaku Yokota, which specifically deals with many myths, misconceptions, and apparent contradictions that have crept in over the years during which karate has developed. This is actually the second edition of this book, the original edition having been published in 2010. Many updates and improvements have been made in this edition as it has been professionally proofread and formatted.As with the author's other works, this is not really a how-to manual; however, it does include a few illustrated instructional examples, especially with regard to Tekki (Naihanchi), for the sake of clarifying some of the points made about the interpretation of kata, stances, etc.Some topics that are dealt with are thoughts behind kime and hikite, differences between snapping and thrusting kicks and how their study has been influenced by the advent of sport and competition within the art, the notion of returning to the starting point of a given kata and that of beginning and ending with blocks when running kata, the subject of makiwara training, and the idea of the silent kiai, amongst others.If you've ever wondered about some of these topics, this is a great book to acquire some historical and contextual insight into such matters.As is typical of this author's style, the content in this book is presented in a very straightforward, conversational manner, which allows for the topics to be enjoyable and easily understood.Obviously, this book is written specifically from the perspective of a Shotokan practitioner; however, the concepts hold true across the many different styles of karate. In fact, the author makes several references to other styles and uses the similarities and differences between them to further illustrate many important points.I strongly recommend this book for any student of karate (Shotokan or otherwise) who might be curious about the truth behind many of the myths, misconceptions, and apparent contradictions that have manifested themselves over the years.

Havers A good book for helping karateka to think outside the box and scrutinize what they've been taught. The author does a good job of thinking outside the box but he is still hasn't broken free entirely. A good read i was hoping for that little bit more but i think it fell short only by a fraction otherwise id give it 5 stars
