Bipolar Disorder For Dummies, by Candida Fink, Joe Kraynak From the Author When we sat down to discuss our approach for Bipolar Disorder For Dummies, we considered the audience for the book and decided to address both those who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and their friends and family members. One of the most challenging aspects of bipolar disorder is that although only one person might carry the diagnosis, friends and family members are all affected by it in some way and all play an important role in reducing stress and assisting the person who has bipolar obtain and maintain treatment. Both of us (Candida in her practice and Joe in his family) noticed that family members, simply by being uninformed, can unwittingly increase the stress that often triggers a mood episode. This is not to say that loved ones cause bipolar disorder, but research shows that a strong support network improves the treatment outcome. We wanted to ensure that friends and family members are well aware of their roles and responsibilities. By becoming better informed, through our book and other sources of accurate information, family and friends can learn more effective techniques for communicating with one another and building a more effective support network. Bipolar Disorder For Dummies is a comprehensive how-to manual that discusses the diagnosis and the most effective treatment options currently available. We believe that medication alone is very helpful but often not completely effective, for whatever reason, and we recommend several therapies in addition to medication, including cognitive behavioral therapy, social rhythm therapy, and relationship and family therapy. We also discuss alternative therapies, some of which are complete bunk and others of which some people with bipolar disorder have found helpful. By presenting the available tools and helping readers steer clear of useless or counterproductive alternatives, we hope to enable those with bipolar disorder and their families, along with the guidance of their qualified doctors and therapists, to structure a treatment plan that works most effectively for all involved.

It covers just about anything one should know about how to cope and survive being Bipolar, as well as how to cope in a relationship of some kind with someone who has been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. I've had positive experiences with the "books for dummies" series' I've also had experiences with psychiatrists and psychologists for many years, as well as having taken classes through Nami (a large organization concerned with teaching and informing the general public about mental illness). I have family, many of them mentally ill. I am thoroughly informed about this horrible brain disorder. I have a loved one who is particularly vulnerable and fragile because of her diagnosis. As I've flipped through the pages of this book, I have been struck by something quite valuable on every page I've encountered. I'll give you some examples at random:1. Part III: Managing the Biology of Bipolar Disorder- this section begins with a list of common medications for bipolar disorder. I did not know that the medication called Lamictal is a common one for mania (highs marked by extremely high-energy moods; not all pleasant ones, including high anxiety and anger), and depression (including low moods such as feelings, including hopelessness and helplessness, as well as thoughts about suicide (in some cases only), and lack of energy. The Lamictal acts as a mood stabilizer for the purpose of evening out the mood swings to a enable a middle-ground mood. I didn't know that Lamictal was so common at all; I hadn't heard of it until my loved one was recently prescribed this. As a result, we stuck with the doctor in spite of his incompetency, due to an error he made in a different matter. And because the Lamictal was working so well! We previously concluded this doctor was a good one for us after prescribing this miracle drug. Had we known this drug was common, we might have sought another doctor (psychiatrist) immediately after his erroneous decision (but not including the decision of adding the mood stabilizer). I hope for you it is crystal clear that this book is proving to me, immediately upon turning a page, how effective it is at solving my problems from a lack of knowledge about medication issues (even though I've felt I've been very informed in the past).2. Chapter 15: Planning ahead for a mood episode- The second point of this chapter, "Preventing a mood disorder from spinning out of control", is stated on the chapter's first page. On the their page there is a section called, "Thwarting a mood episode" which covers this somewhat. On this page it claims that our doctor might discontinue a medication that may be contributing to symptoms. We've honestly never had an experience with discontinuing a medication (or drug) to control moods. We have only added meds on many occasions, or have discontinued meds due to them not being as effective as they might have once been.3. Page 77 (chapter 5)- "Go online", the book reads; the American Psychiatric Association (APA) is a source to find a doctor. I've never known this. When I go to this site I see there is a page for patients and families that has a link for finding doctors nearby any zip code. Doctors must have a membership to be listed for this service.4. P. 149 (Chapter 8)- "Coming to Peace with my meds." This is a very important page indeed, because we may or may not know that every patient, upon finding out they have to take medication (including a vow not to ever drink alcohol), will undoubtedly face a certain degree of struggle in not only accepting a fist-time diagnosis, but accepting and following through with the regimen of these meds on a regular basis as a matter of public health as well as the health of the patient. Also, one must be ever-vigilant in noticing when one needs an adjustment in meds. It is very tricky, and without the patient's consent, if they are on their own, this can become an issue, as it was with my loved one. We had more of an issue with followthrough than anything. The diagnosis was rocky as well, but I'm aware of other patients who have not accepted theirs. The passage that talks about this is a bit corny, by the way; however, I can see how it might encourage individuals to give the subject some serious thought.- and one more:5. Page 44, Part I:- Inflammation is the body's response to an illness. This is true even with bipolar disorder, because it is also a physiological disease. This book basically says this. The stress on the brain from emotional responses can cause inflammation and discomfort or even pain. This can even be true of the brain it's self. I happen to know this last issue from my studies; however this book does a very good job of explaining this problem in general.I've read the entire section on communication, as this is my forte. I read it the day before last and have learned a few tricks I may not have known or have forgotten over the years. All in all I believe this book does earn the stars. A book is never going to tell you to go ahead and take the extra med on the next occasion you have noticed a dramatic spike in mania or drop in depression; this is for the patient safety. I've seen this happen, and with mixed results. This book is very safe to rely on, and I recommend it. I've taken some time to do today's method of searching this book with amazing results. Results that have allowed me to feel much better about the illness of my loved one. My loved one has both this mood disorder as well as an added thought disorder. As you might imagine, I jumped at the chance to search this book.

Understandable language and latest research By Auntie Annie This book would be extremely helpful to anyone newly diagnosed with bi-polar disorder or to his/her family members. It covers the topic well, from symptoms, to dealing with the disorder, to various treatments and their side effects, to supplements that may help, etc. It has the latest research on the topics. I found it helpful in explaining a family member's problems, including some new ideas on diet and supplements that may help. There is a section on bi-polar in women, especially during pregnancy and menopause that includes information I've never seen before, and I read fairly extensively. The language in the book is geared for the general population, not for the physician/therapist as so many articles/books are.

Excellent Update By Patty MB I have an older edition of this book; when I found a newer edition, I definitely wanted to order it and I'm glad that I did.The authors make bipolar disorder REAL. They do an excellent job of destroying the stigma that having bipolar disorder - and lots of other mental disorders - and I can appreciate that. Not only do they educate people who live with bipolar disorder (like me), they explain it in terms that I understand. I gave my older edition to my 16 year old to read, so that he'll understand me a bit more. I'm definitely going to let him read the updated book.I highly suggest this book for people who are newly diagnosed as well as those of us who've been living with bipolar disorder - and especially for our families. It's written in a language that's understandable, it doesn't sugar coat the reality, yet the explain everything in a tone that is accepting and that's vital for those of us who live with mental illnesses.
