Review The modern Seder is a direct descendant of the innovations of the Talmudic era. However, without a trustworthy guide to the Haggadah, that complex world is a closed book. In The Schechter Haggadah, Joshua Kulp facilitates our understanding of the many recent discoveries and hypotheses about the origins of the Haggadah. An excellent resource for any student of Rabbinic creativity. --Noam Zion, author of A Different Night HaggadahThe Schechter Haggadah provides an account of the historical development of the seder's liturgy over the past 2000 years. In a clear fashion, Joshua Kulp demonstrates how the seder is likely to have been performed when it first developed, in the talmudic period, and how it evolved into the set of rituals and texts we recognize today. His insightful, scholarly commentary will give readers much new and engaging material to discuss at their own seders. --Prof. Judith HauptmanThe modern Seder is a direct descendant of the innovations of the Talmudic era. Makes the Passover Haggah an enjoyable, aesthetic and intellectual experience By Susan Marx This new Haggadah from the Schechter Institute in Jerusalem has the most comprehensive commentary on every possible aspect of the Haggadah imaginable all in one place. First there is the actual beautifully illustrated complete Haggadah itself with Hebrew and English at the beginning (with footnotes to where more info can be found in the commentary) and then there is detailed commentary at the end of the book. There are many references to Mishnaic texts, Tosafot, and other scholarly writings. There is an interesting explanation of why one drinks 4 cups of wine and the discussion of a possible 5th cups; there is a comparison of how history has treated the explanations of the four sons, etc. There is not space in this review to mention all the many fascinating aspects of the seder dealt with in the commentary. The illustrations themselves are important works of Jewish art, illuminated Haggadot, etc. There is a beautiful comparison of the many ways the 4 sons have been depicted throughout the history of Jewish art in Haggadah. This book is interesting and enjoyable to read while at the same time scholarly and thoroughly researched. You could use this Haggadah year after year, learning and teaching something else to everyone around the seder table something new each year.

Sylvester I have been searching for ages for a decent haggadah that is both elegant, usable and has something interesting to say. This haggadah is exactly what I was looking for!! The first part is a standard seder, but is beautifully presented with large, attractive Hebrew/English print, interesting images and an excellent translation which is both elegant and up to date (avoiding both archaisms and irritating, uber-frum language). Unobtrusive references to the commentary are also included throughout. The second part of the seder is a lengthy commentary on all aspects of the haggadah, from a historical perspective. This provides a wealth of fascinating detail about the historical and textual background of all aspects of the seder, from the central mitzvot, to the songs at its conclusion. Some of the commentary will be too detailed for some, but I think everyone should find something of interest. There are also hundreds of illustrations with explanation throughout. Basically, it's the perfect haggadah if you want something thoughtful, elegant, usable and stimulating ... I say buy it!(Is it going to be on sale on amazon.co.uk any time soon??)

I probably wouldn't use it at the seder--- it's large and elegant and I wouldn't want it to get wine-spattered or filled with matza crumbs--- but it's an excellent resource.
