An In Depth Look at a Very Real and Frightening Group of Murderers By Lynda There are a lot of books about ISIS out there right now, and it's hard to digest all of the information currently circulating in the news. This author has experience getting to the point as a columnist, so this book gets right to the meat and potatoes of the issue. It's so very sad to hear about the people who have willingly join this sect of savages thinking that it is a path to a meaningful life. It's not long before they realize that it's just a group of misguided murderers with loyalty to no-one but themselves. The stories of victims who escaped or survived, and their family members are harrowing. Hall did a great job of seeing this issue and the effects of this group from multiple perspectives.

An Intriguing Read By Chris Tharp Funereal takes us on a bracing journey through the physical and psychological landscape of modern Seoul, entertaining us while never shying away from the big questions. The prose is taut and electric, buzzing like the hi-tech world that its characters inhabit. Funereal is both a thriller and a meditation on life in the 21st century, illuminating a world where media, technology, and the thirst for fame can turn the idea of living and dying on its head. Funereal is an impressive and imaginative achievement from an exciting new writer.

I was very invested in the story and was glued to the book the entire time. It touched on a very real subject that I'm aware of and read many articles about it in my time - the suicide rate in Asia. The thought of being buried alive is terrifying though and I can completely see why it would make you realize how important life is.Soobin Shin is a young woman trying to make a living in Seoul, South Korea. She is having issues trying to find a career in her field leaving her working at a doughnut shop. Soobin and her twin sister discuss the high suicide rates and the most recent death of a young actor. When Joe shows up or as Soobin knew him as "Mr. Napkin" and he offers her a job that she cannot refuse. So she started working at OneLife Korea, helping people see the value in their lives by burying them alive. Then something bad happens that makes Soobin question everything, will she be able to figure out what needs to be done before it's too late? The characters felt like they could be real people, it hard for me to feel that connection with characters. Soobin was great and I loved that she refused to dye her blonde hair. I liked that she actually wanted to be different - that she didn't want to blend in with everyone else around her, including her twin sister. I can imagine it would be difficult to have a twin that was a model though, why didn't she just follow her sisters footsteps and model? I guess it isn't for everyone and she had a degree for something else so I can see why not but she could have modeled until she got a job. I'm not sure I would have jumped to work at a place that buries people alive but I guess it would be better than a doughnut shop.I was skeptical about Joe the entire time. I would have been incredibly creeped out by this strange old man coming up to me after I got off work to offer me a creepy job. I really think I would have thought about that job longer than she did, she just immediately said yes. I also knew it was only a matter of time before something went wrong because everything was just a little too easy for a while there. I predicted exactly what happened, that is until Minju's part, that threw me. This was a very interesting read and I think a lot of people would enjoy this. Just ignore the title, I know seeing funereal doesn't make you think it's going to be a pleasant read but it's not that morbid.

-Annotated with new introduction for the Jefferson Library Edition. Among the 6,500 books sold to Congress by Jefferson in 1815 to replace the Congressional Library that had been destroyed when the British burned the Capitol during the War of 1812 was a translation of the Koran by George Sales. Sales’ translation included more than one hundred pages of notes written from a Christian perspective. Including advice on how Muslims might be converted. These are preserved within this text. There is some debate about whether he purchased his copy of the Koran in law school in order to follow references found in his textbooks; or if he purchased his copy of the Koran later in order to research the faith of the jihadists of his day-the Barbary pirates. He very well may have used his Koran for both purposes. Jefferson cataloged the books within his library by subject and included the Koran with other legal texts. But he also confronted Islamic extremists often during his storied life. While Thomas Jefferson was serving as the U.S. Ambassador to France the BETSEY a merchant brig was captured On 11 October 1784, by Moroccan corsairs. After Spain's foreign minister, José Moñino y Redondo negotiated the release of the captured ship and crew, Spain advised the United States to follow their course of action and pay tribute to the Berber Muslims to prevent further attacks. Months after the BETSEY was captured, two additional American ships were seized and their crew of twenty-one men was enslaved by Algerian corsairs. A schooner Maria, commanded by Captain Isaac Stevens, was captured off Cape Saint Vincent, Portugal, on July 24, 1785 and a week later, on July 30, 1785 the Dauphin, commanded by Captain Richard O'Brien, was captured off Cadiz, Spain. This time Spain was unwilling to negotiate on America’s behalf. Jefferson, in 1786, along with John Adams, the U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain met with Tripoli’s Ambassador to Great Britain Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja. Thomas Jefferson reported the conversation to the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, John Jay: “We took the liberty to make some inquiries concerning the Grounds of their pretensions to make war upon a Nation who had done them no Injury, and observed that we considered all mankind as our Friends who had done us no wrong, nor had given us any provocation. THE AMBASSADOR ANSWERED US THAT IT WAS FOUNDED ON THE LAWS OF THEIR PROPHET, THAT IT WAS WRITTEN IN THEIR KORAN, THAT ALL NATIONS WHO SHOULD NOT HAVE ACKNOWLEDGED THEIR AUTHORITY WERE SINNERS, THAT IT WAS THEIR RIGHT AND DUTY TO MAKE WAR UPON THEM WHEREVER THEY COULD BE FOUND, AND TO MAKE SLAVES OF ALL THEY COULD TAKE AS PRISONERS, AND THAT EVERY MUSLIM WHO SHOULD BE SLAIN IN BATTLE WAS SURE TO GO TO PARADISE. Thomas Jefferson decided to send representatives to Morocco and Algeria to try to negotiate treaties and the secure the freedom of the captured sailors. Each of the four Berber Muslim states demanded $60,000. The envoys however were only given a budget of $40,000. Diplomatic negotiations to reach an amount for tribute or for the ransom of the captured sailors bogged down. In 1795, Algeria came to an agreement that resulted in the release of the 115 American sailors they held, at a cost of over $1 million. The U.S. paid Algiers the ransom, and agreed to pay up to $1 million per year for the safe passage of American ships. A $1 million payment in ransom and tribute to these Islamic states in 1800 would have amounted to approximately 10% of the U.S. government's annual revenues. In 1801, when Jefferson was president, Tripoli demanded a massive payment from the United States, along with an increased annual tribute, in order to continue securing safe passage for American ships through the Mediterranean. Jefferson refused the demands, and instead of sending more money, he sent naval warships carrying the newly created U.S. Marine Corps. This is where the line “to the shores of Tripoli” in the Marine Corps hymn comes from.

Bond It's like reading history, which it is, but it is hugely valuable in forming an accurate understanding of the background of this religion. It helps understand how the Christian movement in that period relates. The annotations and pretexts provided are of unique value.

Defending Hinduisms Philosophical Unity, it is fashionable among intellectuals to assert that dharma traditions lacked any semblance of unity before the British period and that the contours of contemporary Hinduism were bequeathed to us by our colonial masters. Such arguments routinely target Swami Vivekananda, a key interlocutor who shattered many deeply rooted prejudices against Indian civilization. They accuse him of having camouflaged various alleged contradictions within traditional Hinduism and charge him with having appropriated the principles of Western religion to manufacture a coherent and unified worldview and set of practices known today as Hinduism. Indras Net: Defending Hinduisms Philosophical Unity provides a foundation for theories that slander contemporary Hinduism as illegitimate, ascribing sinister motives to its existence and characterizing its fabric as oppressive. Rajiv Malhotra offers a detailed, systematic rejoinder to such views and articulates the multidimensional, holographic understanding of reality that grounds Hindu dharma. He also argues that Vivekanandas creative interpretations of Hindu dharma informed and influenced many Western intellectual movements of the post-modern era. Indeed, as he cites with many insightful examples, appropriations from Hinduism have provided a foundation for cutting-edge discoveries in several fields, including cognitive science and neuroscience.

A valid defense of Hindu Dharma against fragmentary and predatory vested interests By INDER JIT SINGH MANN Book review by S.Mann, PhD, an independent Business Consultant with deep interest in literature, inter-cultural studies and Hindu DharmIndra’s Net is an exquisitely well-researched and penetrating defense of the philosophical unity of the Dharmic traditions. A vividly compelling read, the book has the potential to catalyze an appropriate response against fragmentary and predatory vested interests working against Hindu Dharm, so as to prevent the loss of its nuclear concepts and eventual dissolution. It is a brave and commendable appeal on the part of Mr. Rajiv Malhotra for not allowing to go unchallenged, the insidious attempts to fragment Hindu Dharm and philosophy by the reductionist and short-sighted interpretations from an alien perspective. The book stands a worthy warrior, guarding what is a centuries-old, empirical, tested and tried, scientific system of thought. The metaphor of Indra’s net has been used to provide an analogy to denote the different levels of vastness, interconnectivity, as well as unity-in-diversity concepts of the Hindu Dharm. The book is a serious rebuttal of the cultural neo-colonialism, wearing the guise of globalization that has set into motion forces which furiously attempt a siege on the Hindu Dharm from the inside. It is a magnificent reminder of the fact that the ‘West’ does not always have to be the agent of change - and every country, culture and religion will always have the fundamental right to decide what it should accept or reject.First of all, Rajiv Malhotra empirically demolishes (with substantial textual and historical evidence) the myth that Hinduism is an artificial construct created by thinkers like Vivekanand in response to the erstwhile colonial challenge. On the contrary, Hinduism factually emerges a lush and robust thought system that has survived and adapted to innumerable changes since prehistoric times rendering its scope beyond the hollow and reductionist logic of antagonistic Western ‘thinkers’. Hinduism is a tradition that is vibrant, alive and is supremely vaster than any one thinker, avatar or deity. Adi Shankaracharya as well as Swami Vivekanand, though existing in time-frames more than a thousand years apart, were both very integral part of the growth and evolution of Hindu thought. Additionally, both were valid interpreters of the Dharm in the context of their own times. Vivekanand had to address the consciousness of a nation undergoing a radical and forcefully invasive imposition as well as to position Vedant as a science in its own right with all its claims and experiences open to experimentation and validation. He made Vedant relevant to every householder rather than just the seekers of Moksh. This was in line with the ongoing consolidation of Hinduism as a movement towards an expanded sense of astik with many schools of thought and lineages being absorbed in it.Rajiv Malhotra uses a prodigiously telling phrase “audacity of being different” to clarify that Hindu Dharm has some very basic differences from the Abrahamic religions. The most vital difference is that Hindus do not need a Prophet or a Messiah to connect to God. Abrahamic religions are primarily history-centric, and depending upon a singular historical revelation, wherein the ultimate truth is limited to a few select prophets and is made available to the many solely through them. As an academic example, a layman’s claim to a direct revelation or conversation with God would be tantamount to blasphemy in the eyes of the Abrahamic religious orders. By contrast, Hinduism is not history centric and is not dependent upon any specific incident, revelation-history, or person for its validity. Everyone is divine with the potential to discover one’s own divinity and has the prerogative to validate the experience of rishis as texted in shruti. This is in sharp contrast to, say, the Christian concept of all being ‘born sinners’ because of the primal sin of Adam and Eve.Some basic concepts of Hinduism like the nature of Brahm both manifest and unmanifest and the related concept of mithya are succinctly explained. The complementary nature of Shruti with yog and anubhav, gyan with vigyan, para and apara knowledge with adhyatam vidya, are explained in a crisp and insightful manner. Hinduism is likened to an ecosystem where new species are born and nurtured and older species adapt or may even die. Another comparison is with an open architecture (and IT term), with a variety of modular components available to suit individual choices and needs, with the built-in potential for growth and experimentation within limits. There is place for all astik thought systems, and due respect for intercultural fertilization which stems from a genuine desire to enrich humanity at large. At the same time, this very nurturing openness and inclusiveness makes Hinduism vulnerable to fragmentation and digestion by predators. Rajiv Malhotra provides numerous examples and explains this construct, and the process of digestion. Unfortunately, the sinister implications of this process of digestion are many and all too real: the tendency to treat the Hindu sources as irrelevant, scope for serious distortions or misunderstanding, generating interest in the superficial and the loss of contact with the true Dharmic source, and the potential that the original idea never reaches full fruition.Rajiv Malhotra initiates a very meaningful and critical debate on safeguarding the core of Hindu Dharm. Hinduism’s core tenant is that we are all born divine (sat chit anand) and that the basic premise of Karm and reincarnation are non-negotiable. This along with Jivamukti can be assigned a nuclear role in Hindu Dharm. He constantly reiterates that Karm and reincarnation can never be removed from Vedant nor can Yog be separated from its own yam and niyam, as well as the fundamental unity-of-nature that is at the heart of Hinduism. All ideologies that are grounded in the nastic concept and those that are in contradiction with any of these basic premises need to be recognized and should not be allowed to infiltrate the Dharmic tradition. He discusses some strategies like the “poison pill” and the porcupine defense and welcomes inputs and elaboration in this field. This book may not be for the faint of heart but it is unquestionably the holy grail of “must-reads” for all who have a stake in the future of Hinduism as a coherent tradition with its respected place in world religions. Thus it is not just for scholars of religion but for everyone who truly believes in the basic human right to dignity and independent thought including respect for his/her own race, culture, religion and language. Millenniums-old Dharmic traditions cannot be allowed to be misinterpreted with malignant and insidious intent lest the future generations are deprived of the most invaluable heritage of all - their right to reach God. Indra’s Net equips the reader with a sound knowledge base and provides a holistic perspective that is indispensable in overcoming the insular cocoon of complacency so dangerous in today’s world. The book is a clarion call to establish the place of Hinduism among the world’s traditions and to prepare this generation and all those that follow to overcome the most strident challenges in an age of unprecedented threats and opportunities.

Most Hindus are aware of the many Western intellectuals who romanticized and marveled at the insights and wisdom of Hindu thought. Thanks to Rajiv Malhotra's first book "Invading the Sacred", many Hindus are aware of recent Anti-Hindu scholarship in Western Academia and the names of people behind it.What in Unknown to most Hindus is the deeply negative counter-current rhetoric that has been brewing in the Western Academia over the last 100 odd years and spilling into and disrupting the peace and tranquility of Hindu neighborhoods and their private community living. Cohesion and alignment of such anti-Hindu polemical scholarship is unmistaken and its shared intent to vilify Hinduism and weaken Hindu identity is evident. Unfortunately, such incessant and unrelenting negative rhetoric has penetrated some of the Westernized intellectuals and journalists in India and is attempting to reach mainstream voice and disrupt Hindu identity.Negative portrayals of cherished Hindu leaders, who sought to revive Hindu identity and unity, is on the rise. Any attempt to speak of Hindu identity is trashed as incoherence and mindless homogenization. Great Hindu leaders like Swami Vivekananda are portrayed as wily Hindu nationalists who sought Hindu unity for political expedience. Any practicing peaceful Hindu, who has read Swami Vivekananda and experienced the positive outlook for their unity and identity and found their lives enriched as a process, is flabbergasted to hear such treachery is seeping into their very own backyard masquerading as scholarship and historical analysis.Indra's Net is a timely response to set the matters straight. Hindus are at a critical juncture with this avalache of negative portrayals crashing in. Their inward focus will no longer do. Hindu scholarship needs to respond and correct the narrative. Hindus should take charge of their own grand narrative.Rajiv Malhotra's second book Breaking India highlighted how some negative forces are manifesting in India to disrupt and break India, to weaken any efforts among Hindus to find a common identity. In his next book Being Different, Rajiv Malhotra shows the common heritage to all Dharma traditions and contrast them to Abrahamic religions. He also highlights origins of exclusivity in the history-centric religions, and resulting difference-anxiety-from-above that leads to intolerance in Western minds. In his new book Indra's Net, Rajiv Malhotra takes on some of the key ideological and intellectual precepts on which these divisive forces operate. Rajiv Malhotra systematically identifies some of the key myths on which these negative narratives and portrayals are built, debunks those myths, and exposes the myth-makers.For the anti-Hindu camp, there is one fatal flaw in this book: book makes eminent sense and more importantly brings understanding of Hindu unity. Prejudice is the death knell for the anti-Hindu scholarship.Highly recommended book not only to understand the integral unity that forms the common base on which Hindu diversity, pluralism, and dynamism thrive but also expose the true colors of disruptive forces that seek to undermine and misrepresent it.

Ron Gardner I was inititially attracted to this book because I recently began working on a Buddadharma text and need to bone up on Indra's Net because of its central role in Hua Yen Buddhism. I wanted to get a nuanced Hindu perspective-- with Brahman, and not emptiness, as the noumenal foundation of the Net--and this book provided it, to a limited extent. However, because this book is essentially about "defending Hinduism's philosophical unity," it did not deeply consider the Vedic view of Indra's Net versus the Buddhist. What this book does deeply consider, however, is how modern and post-modern intellectual forces in the West are conspiring to de-legitimize Hinduism as a genuine and coherent religion. And according to Malhotra, the reason they do this is "to protect Western hegemony." These forces, he says, have an academic and political agenda which is best served by depicting Hinduism as a "random juxtaposition of incoherent and fragmented traditions." By undermining any idea of coherency in Indian civilization, these forces in effect champion Western supremacy. As Malhotra puts it, "In the intellectual kurukshetra of globalization, civilizations compete to gain `mindshare.'"Malhotra has little regard for the prevalent Western ethos or "mindset" that is behind the attack on a legitimate Hinduism. He views the West as representing "brute-force reduction of diversity into homogenity, where diverse living substances are transformed into uniformly lifeless ashes." The West, as he sees it, is about normative order rather than profound, variegated culture.According to Malhotra (who uses the term "neo" in a disparaging sense, as a synonym for "pseudo"), the thesis of the neo-Hinduism forces looking to subvert Hinduism can be summarized thus:1) Swami Vivekananda manufactured a new religion, popularly called Hinduism, and other Indian nationalists such as Gandhi, Radhakrihnan, Rabindranath Tagore, and Sri Aurobindo subsequently crystallized it.2) The Bhagavad Gita was not a central text until Western Indologists made it important.3) Christian ideals of helping society and Western secular theories of social ethics inspired Indian nationalists appropriate them; karma yoga was used merely as a garb to make the plagiarized ideas look Hindu.4) Hinduism is inherently oppressive of minorities such as Muslims, Christians, Dalits, and women. It forces others into its own homogeneity for gaining political control. Hindutva is its latest incarnation and its goal has been to impose homogeneity.5) Hinduism is a dangerous conspiracy that is being spread worldwide by duping naïve Westerners into thinking that it is a genuine tradition of peace and equality, which it is not.Malhotra provides an in-depth counter-thesis to the neo-Hindu thesis, and anyone interested in the debate between these two diametrically opposed theses will doubtless find this book a compelling read.Who exactly are the founders and proselytizers of the neo-Hinduism thesis? Malhotra identifies them, providing about twenty names. Most of these people are academics with an agenda, and once you have their names, you can, if you're so inclined, find and read what they've written on the subject.Malhotra is a genuine scholar, and in the course of elaborating his thesis, he provides interesting material on the spiritual history of India. He's clearly a big fan of Swami Vivekananda, and presents arguments to defend him against his detractors. He also has a lot to say about Shankara, which should be of interest to students of Advaita Vedanta. While I found this text an interesting and educational read, I felt that it didn't identify the "disease" that is causing the "symptom" of neo-Hinduism. Although the text properly identifies the agenda and limitations of the modern Western Weltanschauung; it fails to get to the root of the problem: Progressivism, left-wing neo-Marxist fascism, an ideology coincident with America being hijacked and effectively privatized by a private, central Banking Cartel in 1913. This private Banking Cartel named itself The Federal Reserve, but it is not Federal at all, and neither is its collection agency, the Internal Revenue Service. In the twentieth century, Progressivism took over the American educational system, and 94% of all university professors now identify themselves as Progressives, or left-wing liberals. In short, it is this cancerous Progressivism, being peddled around the world as "Integral Globalism" by the likes of Ken Wilber, which is overtly and covertly waging war on Hinduism and any ideology anathema to its hegemony. In summary, this text is provocative and worth reading, but it is also perimetric because it doesn't identify the "Heart of the Beast" seeking to de-legitimize Hinduism--Progressivism.

Can so-called ‘Superfoods’ really help you be healthier and feel better? Good question. Co-author, Donna Davidson, says, I'm often asked things like, "Can learning how to make chocolate recipes and homemade chocolates from a costlier raw, organic version of chocolate really be so much better for you?" Or, "Can Cacao and other so-called 'superfoods' seriously contribute to a low cholesterol diet or help someone trying to achieve weight loss, or battle debilitating health problems?" Actually, that’s exactly what happened for me. Today, 5 years on from my first tentative superfoods ‘experiments’, I’m healthier and feeling better than I had felt for years, in my ‘pre-superfoods’ days. And I’m not alone." Here are just 3 stories from ordinary people trying out superfoods for themselves: Annemarie: Nick, my husband, has been using the green smoothie powder and is really noticing the benefits – he is a landscaper so needs the energy - plus he has sinus problems and this has really helped with that as well. Brilliant. Sigrid: Still going strong with the smoothies and have one most days. Really like them and I think they are helping me cope with the stresses of my current life – very sick husband, work, coping with ten staff, visitors and the rest of the daily grind. Michele M: I am having a smoothie every morning and my Green Smoothie Shot and the great thing is, I have been able to stop taking the Laxsol tablets that I have had to take for years. I decided to stop taking them straight away because they aren’t life threatening (just uncomfortable if this didn’t work) to see if the Chia seeds and Green Smoothie Shot made any difference immediately. I’m pleased to say it has and I'm (as) ‘regular as clock-work’ without medication… wahoo! Now for the extra good news, I have lost 2kgs in just under 2 weeks of using the Chia Seeds, Cacao Powder and Green Smoothie Shot - so the products are obviously cleansing my body well. I’m using all natural 100% pure coconut water in my smoothies and a frozen banana which is awesome. Thank you so much for your recommendations and supplying such great products. These stories are fairly typical of the feedback we get from people open enough to give superfoods a go. Over the past 5 years, I discovered I have a hidden talent for persuading superfood sceptics to give them a try - by simply relating my own story to them. Almost all reported experiencing the same increased sense of well-being and improved mental acuity that I’d found; while others also gained relief from persistent and debilitating health issues - which I similarly achieved after adding superfoods into my regular diet (not changing anything else in my diet at the time) by the simple means of drinking a delicious green smoothie every morning. Donna and Kay both agreed that Cacao would be the perfect superfood for book #1 - because everyone loves chocolate right? And healthy, or certainly healthier, ways to enjoy chocolate have got to be a great addition to any chocolate lover’s recipe book collection. So, with Kay cracking the whip and Donna creating, making, baking, eating and perfecting the recipes, this ‘Discover Superfood Series #1: 21 Best Cacao Recipes’ was born. Kay says,"Just try some of these wonderful Cacao (natural organic chocolate) recipes for yourself and I think you'll love them as much as we do! Enjoyed in moderation, (for sadly, you can even eat too much raw organic chocolate) these 21 best cacao recipes will be a lot healthier and better for you than the sugar and chemical-filled, commercial chocolate products at your local supermarket. This book (and the rest of the Discover Superfoods Series to come) is designed to be an easy introduction to superfoods; simple recipes, easy to make, absolutely delicious. If you downloaded this book you are either a ‘superfoods newbie’ or an existing fan looking for some new ideas. Either way this book is perfect for you.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Delicious recipes and much more By Cat-sensei I think a craving for sweets is probably my biggest vice. Even though I know about the dangers of sugar, bad fats and over-processed carbohydrates, I hardly ever manage to pass up cake or cookies when they are offered. The recipes in this book sound too good to be true, but having read the ingredient explanations, I really want to give some of them a try! Locating and affording some of the ingredients might be challenging, but I was happy to note that the recipes typically make 30 bars or cookies or whatever, so that sounds worth the effort. The value of this book is not just in the wonderful recipes. The main reason I wanted to read it was to learn about the super-foods that the book is recommending. It’s the first time I’ve heard of lucuma and yacon. I’ve seen coconut sugar and coconut flour at the supermarket, but hesitated to buy them because of the expense. After reading about the benefits and uses, I can make an informed decision to buy or not. I was also interested to read about activating nuts before use, because I have the same digestion problem with nuts as one of the writers does.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Easy to read. Informative. Resourceful. Helpful. By Pamela Burke The quick review. Easy to read. Informative without too much jargon. Resourceful. Helpful. The longer review.Easy to read. I was able to soak up this book rather quickly. I guess that may be the expectation from a recipe book, but to me it also shows are easily and quickly I could find information. That is an awesome thing about me having read the book via Kindle. In the beginning of the book are excerpts for the ending chapters (those after the recipes that share value information). Oddly, I liked seeing the conclusion at the beginning of the book. It let me know what to expect.Informative. I do not need a dissertation or to be overwhelmed by someone's knowledge. The book gives just enough to share on the topic and advantages of super foods. I like too that the authors share that they did a lot of experimenting. Too often people get so caught up in proving that they are an expert, their authenticity is lost. I felt realness of these authors. I appreciate that. I also love how the authors acknowledge that their audience may be outside of their country. They took that even further by providing information as to where to buy ingredients referenced in the book. It was as if they were reading my mind by providing this information. From Kindle it was very easy to get to the links provided.Resourceful. I already touched upon this when I referenced the links for certain ingredients.Helpful. I was not looking for it when I started reading the book, but I am always looking for natural and healthy options for my post workout meals. I am looking forward to giving those Serious Protein Balls a try. I have already placed an order for protein powder. There are other recipes that caught my attention that I plan to try. I will modify some of the recipes because I am not big on fruit mixed in things. I think these are also really great ideas to make an share during the upcoming holidays. I frequently make people upset with me for bringing healthy options to parties, but hopefully good for you chocolate will hush people up.I really enjoyed the book, its ease, the information and its layout. I await the next book in the series.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. to the point and easy to understand By Marcelo Toniolo This book is a gem and I'm looking forward to trying some of these recipes. It is well written, to the point and easy to understand. The recipes are uncomplicated. The unique ingredients in these recipes have particular interest to me as I've been on a temporary but strict sugar-free, dairy free, wheat free diet to get my digestion back to normal. It's taken months and I still have a way to go. I was already familiar with the health benefits of cacao and had been trying to invent my own recipes using it and the other sweeteners, Stevia and Erythritol and had never heard of Lucuma Powder. I've already successfully made my own activated nuts which are also in this book and are indeed easier to digest. This book is not just another sugar-omitting recipe collection, but adds the concept of introducing Superfoods to the diet as well.

Fasting has been practiced for centuries, but can it help you to be healthier? Fasting is an ancient concept and people fast for many different reasons. It is an integral part of many religions from Christianity to Judaism to Islam, and sometimes it is used as a way to make a peaceful protest to fight for a certain cause. Gandhi utilized this method of peaceful, “non-violent” protest very effectively in fighting for India’s independence. Fasting is also the world’s most ancient and natural cleansing mechanism. Many people today use fasting as a way to burn calories or to detox their system.

An eye opener on the benefits of fasting By Surrinder Bains I have always known fasting is a good way to get rid of toxins, but after reading this book, I am much better informed and therefore, motivated to give this a try! Not only are the pros and cons discussed, the reader is also provided with nutritional smoothies and teas and given information on the importance of breaking the fast with foods easy on the digestive system. With the concise information provided, I feel confident to fast and look forward to the many benefits that are listed in this resource.

Which is in Christ Jesus By persistent Recognizing what it means that Christ, the One who holds all things together, is in us, is such a crucial topic which is not discussed in modern times as much as it is in the New Testament letters, in my opinion. So I was pleased to see a book on this subject from Bethel church. There are many rich, thought-provoking statements and stories in this book. I took off one star because I was longing for a bit more discussion of the many New Testament statements about being "in Christ" and what that means for daily life.

I love the part about God trusting us. He's not afraid of us, He can handle anything we do. Just like a good Dad who cheers his kids on and covers them when they mess up. He knows we're not perfect after all. He trusts us because He lives in us. Permission to be great!

Eric Johnson's writing style is clear and easy to read, and so empowering. The truths in this book have shed light on so many lies I've been believing about how God sees and interacts with me. He talks about God trusting us to make decisions and pursue our passions, because Christ is in us, and we have the Spirit of wisdom because he lives in us and through us! Eric Johnson writes, "Whatever challenge you face, the solution is in you and around you because wisdom through the Holy Spirit is in you. Christ is in you." He also drives home the idea of Christians, firmly planted in their identity in Christ, living out the call to love people by letting their lives be their ministry. He dismantles the belief that the only valid ministry and calling is in a church setting. He writes that God adores us and wants to work with our passions and dreams, not in spite of them! God gives us permission to be great and do big things for him. Eric Johnson dismantles the fear that a lot of us have of dreaming of huge exploits with God, all the while worrying that people will question our motives, by saying, "Confidence is driven by what it can give, and arrogance is motivated by what it can gain." There is so much wisdom packed into this little book, I'm sure I'll be going back through each chapter to fully grasp it all. I highly recommend it!I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review from Chosen, a division of the Baker Publishing Group.

The Gospel of Mark resounds with the dynamic power of the Lord Jesus Christ, a message that is desperately needed in an age of aggressive evil and apathetic faith.

In what is perhaps the most dramatic and action-packed of the Synoptic Gospels, Mark’s writing continues to inspire increased commitment to the Lord in the Church at large. His portrayal of Christ as the Servant-Savior takes on fresh relevance in these expositions by respected pastor and author R. Kent Hughes.

With careful exegesis and instructive illustrations, Hughes draws many practical lessons for everyday living and ministry from the Biblical text. Written to help preachers and Bible teachers communicate God’s Word more effectively, this engaging commentary unpacks the Gospel of Mark with clarity and passion.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Valuable Commentary on the Gospel of Mark By Michael C. Boling In recent months, I have been doing a bit of purging when it comes to my personal library. After years of accumulating books, many in relation to various classes in both Bible College and Seminary, things had gotten a bit out of hand. Furthermore, the subject matter of my theological interests has changed a bit over the years. Included in the great book purge were quite a few commentary sets. Several of those sets were helpful at the time for a good quote to insert in a research paper or some matter of practical application. With that said, as I reviewed whether to let those sets remain in my library, the answer was no far more often than it was yes.A commentary set that has remained an important part of my library is the venerable Preaching the Word series from Crossway Books. This recently revamped and relaunched series, while particularly aimed at preachers, is also a series I would highly recommend to the layman audience as well. It is accessible, scholarly when it needs to be without becoming overwhelmed with technical jargon, and most importantly, it relates the truth of Scripture to everyday life.Recently, I had the pleasure of taking a look at a recent release in this series on the Gospel of Mark authored by R. Kent Hughes. My review of this particular volume was rather fortuitous timing as the Gospel of Mark will shortly be the focus on our homeschool Bible class. Needless to say, I was in need of a valuable resource from which to glean instruction material that would be appropriate for a middle school aged child while still providing an adult audience (namely myself) food for thought as well. The Mark commentary fit both of those needs and more. The Gospel of Mark is action packed with the word “immediately” being used numerous times. Contained within the action are important matters of theological truth that can be gleaned if we take the time to ask the question why when reading for example John the Baptist declaring his message of repentance or Jesus calming the storm on the Sea of Galilee. Hughes expertly analyzes the Gospel of Mark, interacting with the text in such a way that both explains the context while also digging into those important matters of application. For instance, in the section on the aforementioned calming of the Sea of Galilee, Hughes saliently comments, “Jesus came in the darkest part of the night when they had exhausted their energies and were in deepest despair. This is how he often comes to us, that we might learn the futility of our own strength and depend upon him. The very waves that distressed them became a path for his feet – so transcending was his power. His feet upon the waves bespoke his familiarity with their plight. He not only sees, but enters the human struggle.”Such commentary again recognizes the important theological points of the calming of the Sea of Galilee, namely that of Jesus power and authority over creation as God, while also noting to the reader what that means in their everyday life. Jesus is God and Jesus understands and cares for us in the midst of the storms of life and most often intervenes when we have recognized that our futile efforts are in vain. Truly such an event speaks of the need for dependence on a sovereign and mighty God, something Hughes picks up on in his commentary and aptly relays to the reader. This is just one of a plethora of examples I could have presented of quality exegesis and helpful application of truth. If you are in search of a quality commentary series or in particular a study on the Gospel of Mark, I highly recommend R. Kent Hughes contribution on Mark.I received this book for free from Crossway Books and the opinions I have expressed are my own. Brian Ivie was filled with compassion as he read an LA Times article about Pastor Lee’s solution to unwanted newborns in South Korea—a baby drop box. Brian traveled halfway around the world to film the documentary The Drop Box. But God had even bigger plans. For in the midst of filming the plight of these abandoned and forgotten children, Brian realized his own spiritual brokenness. At its heart, this is a story of spiritual orphans—young and old—discovering their true identity as children of God.

23 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Remarkable story By B. Piper You might have seen or heard of the documentary film by the same name that's showing in select theaters now. It tells the story of a pastor in South Korea who made it his mission to care for and find homes for those babies who society doesn't want, those born with handicaps or to unwed mothers. He mounted an actual "drop box", a metal box with blankets in it and linked to a notification alarm in his house, where those infants who would otherwise be discarded can be left for him and his wife to care for. Hundreds of children who otherwise had no hope have been loved and cared for through his simple, effective ministry. It is a heart-rending and powerful story.Brian Ivie made that movie, and during it's filming something profound happened to him. When I read this book, Brian's memoir, I spent about 2/3 of it disliking Brian. He was self-centered, manipulative, and generally kind of a jerk. And he says as much about himself. Through the making of the documentary, something he did only because he wanted to win an award the Sundance Film Festival, God began to show Brian what true, sacrificial, fatherly love is. The transformation, even in the tone of the writing, from that time forward was remarkable. Brian changed from that selfish prima donna into a humble, caring person seeking to introduce people to God's love through film and now this book. His story is a good one and Ted did a wonderful job capturing it in writing. It is not a "happily ever after" tale or a "God used exposure to others' suffering to change me" story. Rather it's a memoir of God leading a young man to the place where he would understand true, eternal love.

The story of a life-changing movie By Paul Mastin When filmmaker Brian Ivie read about a South Korean pastor who took in disabled children through a baby drop box, he knew he had found documentary gold. He started out with the goal of shaking up the film world, but in the end it was his own life that got shaken up. In The Drop Box: How 500 Babies, and Act of Compassion, and a Movie Changed My Life Forever, Ivie tells the story of his interest in film-making, his trips to Korea to meet Pastor Lee and his household full of abandoned children, and how Ivie became a follower of Christ as a result.Pastor Lee's story is remarkable. He literally has a box on the side of his house, with a sign that reads, "This is a facility for the protection of life. If you can't take care of your disabled babies, don't throw them away or leave them on the street. Bring them here." The box, lined with blankets, has an alarm which sounds inside when a baby is left. Pastor Lee and his wife have taken in children with every imaginable disability, hundreds of children over several decades. Ivie, moved by the story, e-mailed Pastor Lee, asking if he could come to Korea and film a documentary. Lee agreed, a friendship was born, and an award-winning documentary was made. The film will be released soon.Ivie's book does tell Pastor Lee's story, but it's mostly about Ivie's story. He began making films as a child, using neighborhood kids as the cast. When he began work on The Drop Box, he was enrolled in USC's film school, but he admits when they arrived in Korea he was "totally unequipped to do what we were about to do, but somehow going to do it anyway." They did have some good equipment; a crowd funding campaign and some great interest from connected sources made sure of that. The main storyline of The Drop Box (the book) is Brian's conversion to Christianity. His life turned around. Film had been his religion, but through meeting Pastor Lee, Ivie met Jesus. Ivie's enthusiasm and commitment come through loud and clear, but the story does meander, from his childhood of movie making and movie loving, too his film school experiences, his girlfriends, and, most importantly the film and the impact of Pastor Lee on his life. If nothing else, it gives a back story to the Drop Box documentary which emphasizes the power of a great story. The movie has permanently changed one life in a major way, before it was even complete. May many more be changed. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

By Will In one of the most compelling autobiographies I've ever read, "The Drop Box" tells the story of a young filmmaker's journey to South Korea to make a documentary about a man who built a "mailbox" for abandoned babies. Brian Ivie offers humor and insight into the filmmaking process, but more than anything is brutally honest about his own selfish ambition. This unprecedented view inside the heart of someone who had been told all his life that he was basically "good" challenges readers to consider their own brokenness, while simultaneously offering incredible hope for redemption. I couldn't put it down and I'm betting you won't be able to either. I strongly recommend this book.
