Vatican II's Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions (Nostra Aetate) transformed the Catholic view of the Jewish people and the Jewish religious tradition. Asserting that the Church discovers her link to the ''stock of Abraham'' when ''searching her own mystery,'' Nostra Aetate intimated that the mystery of Israel is inseparable from the mystery of the Church. As interlocking mysteries, each community requires the other in order to understand itself. In Searching Her Own Mystery, noted Messianic Jewish theologian Mark S. Kinzer argues that the Church has yet to explore adequately the implications of Nostra Aetate for Christian self-understanding. The new Catholic teaching concerning Israel should produce fresh perspectives on the entire range of Christian theology, including Christology, ecclesiology, and the theology of the sacraments. To this end, Kinzer proposes an Israel-ecclesiology rooted in Israel-Christology in which a restored ecclesia ex circumcisione--the ''church from the circumcision''--assumes a crucial role as a sacramental sign of the Church's bond with the Jewish people and genealogical-Israel's irrevocable election.

Messianic Judaism and the Catholic Church By Steven Maimes This book may appeal to a limited Catholic and limited Messianic Jewish audience that are comfortable with theological writings. Because the book takes a strong scholarly approach, it is difficult in many areas.What I found most interesting and comprehensible was Kinzer’s discussion and interpretation of Second Vatican Council writings – Nostra Aetate 4 and Lumen Gentium. Others areas I liked were: the mix of Jewish and Catholic ideas, the talk of mystery, and the addition of Jewish Cardinal Lustiger’s writings and ideas.The book lost me with Kinzer’s biblical exegesis from the NT (especially Ephesians). Also, I did not just want to hear of Biblical Judaism but also more of modern Judaism which was mostly neglected.I appreciated that Kinzer acknowledged that Christ is as much the inner mystery of the Jewish people as he is the mystery of the Church – the key here is “mystery.”Jewish and Catholic scholars are much alike and this book can possibly help to improve Jewish-Catholic relations. If non-Catholics read the book they will quickly see that the Christian tradition is wider than just evangelicalism.I don’t have the time to comment on the many ideas… Hopefully, readers will appreciate Kinzer’s fine scholarship.

Building on his presentation of a bilateral ecclesiology (Jews and Gentiles united as Jews and Gentiles in one body) in Post-Missionary Messianic Judaism, Kinzer now develops what he calls a “hermeneutic of dialectical ecclesial continuity” to be applied to all Christian and Messianic Jewish theology. Simply put, Kinzer is saying that the biblical revelation to Israel and through Israel to the Church of Jew and Gentile has come down to us through two quite separate traditions that really belong together. Thus the theological task facing the Christian Church and the Jewish believers in Yeshua requires a profound listening to and sifting of both traditions, the Christian with its variety and the Jewish also in its own variety. Kinzer utilizes this hermeneutic in several key areas – e.g. baptism, eucharist, ministry – delving into the Roman Catholic and the Jewish traditions. An adequate theology today cannot be constructed from one tradition alone, least of all a Christian theology that ignores the Jewish heritage from both before and after Christ. This message is clearly of huge ecumenical relevance.

Imagine a Catholic church that is not attacking Jews and Judaism via doctrines, decrees, dogma, and art, but is instead honoring them, and repenting for past sins. That's what happens when God brings together a brilliant Jewish man (Mark Kinzer) full of wisdom and kindness, and several very well placed Catholics (pope John Paul's personal theologian, for example): Healing old wounds and forging a new path of restoration and reconciliation. Don't be judgy, buy the book.

From the author of the #1 international mental health bestseller Depression is a Liar

A long time ago ... I felt like I was drowning ... when everyone around me was breathing. I was terrified I'd always be miserable. I kept relapsing, and relapsing, and relapsing ... and I didn't know why. I hated my life so much that I wanted to die. Hi, my name's Danny Baker, and I used to suffer from a depression so debilitating that for four years it led to alcoholism, drug abuse, medicine-induced psychosis and multiple hospitalisations. Fortunately, however, I was able to recover, and in this book, I'll share with you the exact three step blueprint I followed to navigate my way out of the abyss and transform myself into the extremely happy, healthy person I am today.

Here's a breakdown of exactly what this book will cover:

Step 1: Firstly, we'll talk about what you can do to understand what is causing your depression. Step 2: Secondly, we'll analyse how you can deal with the underlying causes of your depression so that they no longer cause you to feel depressed. In the course of doing so, we'll also cover how to deal with some particularly common causes of depression including:
  • Spending too long doing things that you don't enjoy;
  • Loving yourself for unhealthy reasons (or not loving yourself at all);
  • Anger;
  • Not allowing gratitude to co-exist with your pain;
  • Self-victimisation;
  • Not being surrounded by the "right" people (or even worse, being surrounded by the "wrong" people);
  • Being a prisoner of what other people think;
  • Taking everything personally (i.e. forgetting that you're only a part of everyone else's world);
  • Living an unbalanced life;
  • Perfectionism;
  • Living an unhealthy lifestyle;
  • Having too many negative thoughts and not enough positive thoughts;
  • Worrying;
  • Struggling to trust someone again after you've been hurt in love.
Step 3: Lastly, we'll discuss what you can do when you experience a relapse so that your relapses gradually become fewer and farther between, and in the end, eventually peter out for good.

I read it all in one night and I cannot recommend it highly enough By Amazon Customer This book is very different from Danny's first book, "Depression is a Liar", which is a hopeful, inspirational memoir about his experience with depression. Instead of being a story about his struggle, "This Is How You Recover From Depression" is more of a traditional self-help book that details exactly how Danny recovered from depression in three straightforward steps. I read it all in one night and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Depression is such a difficult beast to tackle, and often when you're trapped in it, you don't even know where to start when it comes to trying to recover. Thankfully, this book - which serves as a depression recovery blueprint - lays it out clearly. It has helped me immensely and I will be recommending it to others.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I found it easy to read By peter long I've read plenty of books about depression, and how to live with it and defeat it. This book is based on the author's own experiences, which gives it a level of authenticity not always found elsewhere. I found it easy to read, and to take straightforward actions to use on a daily basis. The chapters are fairly short, and punchy. Its easy to go back and dip in to refresh a particular theme as required. I personally found the sections on the importance of gratitude, and on setting aside time to recover particularly useful. There are a lot of pointers to the us of apps to help with lifestyle changes - not for me, but something I haven't seen elsewhere. Useful for anyone experiencing depression, or caring for someone who is depressed.

In no way easy, but clear, simple and easy to refer back to when needed, and we know it works because it worked for the author. This gives us all a light at the end of the tunnel because we know that by just reapplying the formula, the process will work. This book should be read by people suffering depression, their family and friends who want to help but are not sure how. Thoroughly recommended.

Millions of people around the world look to the Bible as a source of encouragement and faith formation, a reminder that God is love and is in control, and a guide to living one’s life the way God desires. But this treasured book has also been misused and manipulated by many, placed on a pedestal of untouchability, and protected from questioning and honest engagement. In Permission Granted, Jennifer Grace Bird encourages people of faith to explore the texts on their own, freed from long-held myths and misconceptions; experience the Bible anew; and appreciate this holy book for what it is―not what we think it should be.

With the sensitivity of one who has discovered this freedom herself, Bird invites readers to engage what the Bible really says about twelve key issues, including sin, sex, and the role of women.

Permission Granted--Take the Bible into Your Own Hands, by Jennifer Bird

Review

“Permission Granted is an excellent reentry point for honest, adult engagementwith the Bible, whether you have been touched by it or burned by it (or both). This book is passionate without sacrificing compassion,academically informed but accessible. Jennifer Bird’s voice is a unique and important one: warm and witty, sage and occasionally snarky, but ultimately deeply reflective and profoundly serious about the troubles many people have with the Bible and how it is used by people today.”

―Joseph A. Marchal, Associate Professor of Religious Studies, Ball State University

"Jennifer Bird has written an accessible, encouraging, and enlightening guide to understanding the Bible better. For those who love the Bible but have serious questions about it, Permission Grantedoffers information, fellowship, and ultimately the freedom learn and explore without fear. This is a winsome yet challenging read that made me love the Bible all the more."

―Rachel Held Evans, author of A Year of Biblical Womanhood and Searching for Sunday

“Jennifer G. Bird is one of those professional readers of the Bible, and they are few and far between, who can both approach the texts as a sophisticated academic critic and translate such research and reading for everyday readers in lucid and effective fashion. Her goal throughout Permission Granted―Take the Bible into Your Own Hands is to get readers to read and to think on their own, drawing on their lives and experiences, as they go through difficult themes and texts. This she does with wisdom and power, with respect and kindness. I recommend the volume most heartily.” ―Fernando F. Segovia, Oberlin Graduate Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity, Vanderbilt University

"Jennifer's style is lively. She combines a "how to" approach with significant substance...from the experience of growing up with a more 'conservative' understanding of the Bible."―Marcus Borg, bestselling author of Reading the Bible Again for the First Time and The Heart of Christianity

“Jennifer Bird is a God-wrestler who is willing to talk back to the Bible when it doesn’t make sense. Though some might be offended by her claims, I consider Bird’s book to be an excellent model for authentic discipleship and adult faith, written in very accessible, easy-flowing language.” ―Morgan Guyton, Director, NOLA Wesley Campus Ministry and Blogger at Patheos.com

“In a distinctly personal style, Jennifer Bird invites us to honor our own questions about the Bible. Rather than submit to scripture because ‘we’re supposed to’ or rejecting the Bible as irrelevant, Bird supplies readers with fresh information and new perspectives for making their own judgments on issues ranging from biblical sexualities and violence to what it means to believe in Jesus.”―Greg Carey, Professor of New Testament, Lancaster Theological Seminary

“Curious about the Bible? Jennifer Bird’s Permission Granted―Take the Bible into Your Own Hands gives you the tools to explore the Bible on your own. It provides clear questions and specific examples to help you reach your own conclusions about what the Bible means for you.” ―Nyasha Junior, Assistant Professor of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, Howard University School of Divinity

By Rebecca Permission Granted- Take the Bible into Your Own Hands by Jennifer Grace Bird is an engaging book I highly recommend. I've been waiting for years for this type of book to be published. As an avid female reader, I've wanted to read a book that directly addressed complicated Biblical issues in an academic manner. In Bird's book, you won't find any humorous stories about everyday life. Instead, prepare yourself for a thought provoking study of difficult stories, people, and specific scripture found in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. The Garden of Eden, the role of women in the church and family, rape, and genocide are a few examples of the topics covered in this book.Throughout the book, Bird encourages the reader to explore difficult issues through a non-traditional lens. The author provides historical detail and background from Hebrew and Greek translations to expand the reader's understanding of difficult concepts. Personally, I found the chapter about the role of women in marriage particularly fascinating. I really appreciated the author's research approach. A couple of times while reading, I had to put the book down and just think about the ideas presented. At no point in the book does Bird talk down to the reader. Instead, Bird is always affirming that it is ok if these topics are hard to reconcile. Bird's style is easy to read, a perfect mix of academic research and a conversational tone.This book is appropriate to read as an individual and would also work as a small group study. Thought provoking questions are included with the chapters. Also, relevant scripture suggestions are made, but not included in the book. I suggest this book to a group that enjoys working through difficult topics and is comfortable with different points of view. Not everyone will be comfortable with the author's interpretation of particular texts. By the end of the book, I was curious to hear more about how the author worked through these issues on a personal level. Little is devoted to this, leaving the reader to ponder the book well after it is finished.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great! By TN Dude Wonderful and insightful. The book touches (and provides very satisfactory answers) on questions I've had about Christianity since I was a young Southern Baptist but was afraid to ask. Bird fervently invites the reader to investigate on their own terms---not to just take her word for it. Whether you agree with her or not, it's a great book to utilize when establishing intellectual religious dialogue with someone. Finally, it's very well-written and concise; even if you're not well-versed in religious studies, Bird's explanations allow you to easily keep up with the presented concepts.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A real conversation starter By B. Parrott Got this book because it was on the PCUSA website and I felt it would be an interesting book for a small group study/discussion. A group of five of us from my church are meeting once a week with the goal of covering one chapter a week. Thus far, the material in the book has caused so muchdiscussion that we are falling a little behind. I have recommended the book to several people and have even told them to do an exercise from the first chapter just to give them an idea of what it's like. Read Genesis Chapter 1, then Chapter 2. Make a chart of the order things were created in the first chapter. Then go back and find when those same things were said to be created in the second chapter. Interesting. At times we feel perhaps the author is kind of snarky with her remarks, but that's just a personal thing for some of us. I think this book is best read when you have an opportunity to discuss it as you are reading. If I wasn't doing it in this group, I know I'd be pulling people aside to get their take on most of the material in it.

Increasingly many are concerned about the direction the world is headed, about the rise of terrorism and Islam, and what is seen as the decline of America. The big question is, "Where is all this leading us?" The book of Revelation is the record of earth's last seven years, recording where the apostasy of the church is leading us; where the brutality of the Islamic State is steering us; why Great Britain, the United States, Russia, and Islam is on the world stage influencing world events; how the New World Order will come into existence. where the Antichrist will come from, and answering the question: "Is the Antichrist among us today?" Revelation and the Age of Antichrist is truly a twenty-first century guide through the book of Revelation. In Revelation and the Age of Antichrist, author Steve Magill follows the natural ordering of the book of Revelation to also reveal the ordering of last day events: apostasy, appearing of Antichrist, the great tribulation, the rapture, the day and hour of God's final judgments, the millennium, the great white throne judgment, and our entrance into eternity.

A major new work in modern Tibetan history, this book follows the evolution of Tibetan Buddhism's trülku (reincarnation) tradition from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries, along with the Emperor of China's efforts to control its development. By illuminating the political aspects of the trülku institution, Schwieger shapes a broader history of the relationship between the Dalai Lama and the Emperor of China, as well as a richer understanding of the Qing Dynasty as an Inner Asian empire, the modern fate of the Mongols, and current Sino-Tibetan relations.

Unlike other pre-twentieth-century Tibetan histories, this volume rejects hagiographic texts in favor of diplomatic, legal, and social sources held in the private, monastic, and bureaucratic archives of old Tibet. This approach draws a unique portrait of Tibet's rule by reincarnation while shading in peripheral tensions in the Himalayas, eastern Tibet, and China. Its perspective fully captures the extent to which the emperors of China controlled the institution of the Dalai Lamas, making a groundbreaking contribution to the past and present history of East Asia.

The Dalai Lama and the Emperor of China: A Political History of the Tibetan Institution of Reincarnation, by Peter Schwieger

Review

The most accessible, archives-based survey of modern Tibetan history ever to be written.

(Gray Tuttle, Columbia University)

A timely book that fills a vacuum in the study of Tibet's history. Schwieger provides an excellent analysis of the evolution of the institution of the Dalai Lama, particularly the Dalai Lama's relationship with the Chinese emperors, that goes beyond the generalized and accepted view of the relationship as symbolic.

(Tsering Shakya, president of the International Association of Tibetan Studies)

The Dalai Lama and the Emperor of China marks a coming-of-age for Tibetan historical studies, complementing the New Qing History of the past several decades. Peter Schwieger brings precision to our understanding of Tibet's central political institution, that of the Dalai Lama, reaching beyond earlier scholarship thanks to his innovative and thorough use of archival sources. His work is essential reading for students of early modern relations among Tibet, Mongolia, and the Manchu empire.

(Matthew Kapstein, EPHE, Paris, and the University of Chicago)

There is much to discover in this rich, informative volume. Skillfully handling the new sources and documents at his disposal, Schwieger has written a book that is essential reading for anyone, specialist and nonspecialist, interested in the rise of the Dalai Lamas and their relations with Mongols, Manchus, and the Qing state.

(Elliot Sperling, Indiana University)

The originality of this remarkable book lies in the central position it accords to Tibetan documents―letters, edicts, petitions―written at the time of the events to which they relate, giving the reader an unprecedented front-row view of history as it unfolds: things do indeed look very different from this close. Schwieger's mastery of the intractable style of these official sources is matched by a well-trained caution in interpretation, a complete absence of political bias, and the ability to transform eight centuries of complex machinations into a gripping account that will appeal to a readership well beyond the field of Tibetan studies.

Sweet This thorough academic study of the uniquely Tibetan institution of reincarnate lamas (tulku-s), which focuses on their political influence and relations with the Chinese empire, will be of great interest to students of Tibetan history. The author steers a middle path between current Chinese claims of long sovereignty over Tibet and the denials of Tibetan nationalists that there was anything more than a "patron-priest" relationship between the Dalai Lama and the Chinese emperor. Much of the book is based on archival documents recently released by the Chinese authorities, and the study is well-grounded in Tibetan, Chinese, and Western sources. The writing style is serviceable, but somewhat dry and academic--I read the book in one day, but I happen to have been very interested in the subject. In the later chapters, it might have helped if the author gave a wider context to the documents he presents, most of which are official proclamations full of flowery rhetoric, making it unclear to what degree they reflected actual or simply claimed influence. It is also surprising that in his discussion of the Reting Rimpoche he does not mention the revolt raised in his favor, supported by the hierarchy of Sera monastery, and the enormous political power of the great Geluk monasteries in general, which was often pro-Chinese and at odds with the Dalai Lama's govt. That aside, this is a nice piece of research for future scholars to build on, especially when (or if) the Chinese ever release the great mass of more confidential documents concerning Tibet that are locked away in the Lhasa and other archives. The scope of the book covers over a thousand years of Tibetan history, and the relations of other important incarnations besides the Dalai Lama with Chinese and Mongolian rulers. It is not a book for those with a romantic-spiritual view of Tibet; the incarnation system is viewed throughout as a political and economic institution.

Significant Volume for China/Tibet Observers By Victoria Huckenpahler This volume is a bit turgid, but it points out something too often overlooked by observers of the ongoing tragedy of Tibet, namely that the picture is more complex than either Tibetans or Chinese are willing to acknowledge. A serious student of history can see that the Chinese have long had a big investment in Tibet and were periodically called upon by Tibetans to assist them in their domestic troubles. Author Peter Schwieger makes this clear by citing the many documents that exist (or at least those he had access to, and they are considerable) asserting China's influence. This does not in any way justify China's genocidal treatment of Tibetans, but it does explain their proprietary view. It can be dull to read through document after document attesting to China's interests in Tibet, but it does make the point clear. And the author ends the book with a superb analysis of how China's posture, though seemingly similar to its historical one, is nonetheless very different in some respects.

By Jonathan Maverson Antisocial Personality Disorder is a type of behavioral wherein the person finds it hard to distinguish what is right from wrong.Sometimes these people have violations on the right of other people. Sociopaths are hard to deal with. They can ruin a relationship and friendship in an office or even inside the house. They can pretend to be good and kind to you. They can manipulate you. So with these kind of characteristics, you should know how these people is operating. This is a great read. It has everything we need to know about the Sociopaths, how to deal with them and to distant from them as much as possible. It has also tips on how to help them. You can also examine yourself if you are already with these people by answering the questions in this book.

It has a total of 19 pages including the two back blank pages, the front page that has the title and table of contents and introduction. It is more of a general overview guide to dealing with these personality types in business not in a friendship, relationship, or family setting. This is more for the purposes of downloading. I would not spend the money to buy the pamphlet. Nothing is known about the author so it is not given from a professional point of view or known if he has had dealings with these cluster B personality types. It would have been fine if it stated it was a pamphlet and not sold as a box set. The term box set means, (and is not subject to interpretation), that there is a wealth of knowledge, or music in a set. The word set means two or more! Box means a box. Box set means that the set could fill a box. The cover has a picture of two hard cover books. It is just a picture. It must have been written by a narcisissist or a sociopath, but even so, the customer need more information than that. You think your getting a buffet but your just getting a saltine.

By Jenny Parson Having to move everyday around with a sociopath really is a difficult thing that a person can face. If one cannot handle the pressure that they bring to you, you will easily break down and everything will start to fall into pieces. Thanks to this book because I have learned many strategies and techniques on how to deal with them at work and with your life. Things are going smoothly because this one taught me on how to counter manipulate sociopaths and control them instead of you being controlled. I am so grateful to have read this one and thankful enough to appreciate what others cannot.

'Skin, Paper, Stone is a deceptively simple novel that packs a punch.' - The Irish Times ‘People think that if they go far away they’ll leave the parts of themselves they don’t like behind. But it doesn’t work like that…’ Stevie moves to Galway to pursue her PhD and takes refuge in the city, and in her relationship with Joe Kavanagh, a charismatic but dispirited artist. Both are looking for something more, but struggle to navigate their way free from the claustrophobia of their lives, the limited circle of acquaintances, the lack of ambition. Escape is the only option, but the surface level of friendliness surrounding them masks a deeper hinterland of jealousy, secrets and violence that can break out at any time. Exploring the chaos and confusion faced by those in their late twenties with humour, pathos and insightful sensitivity, Skin, Paper, Stone is the first novel by Máire T. Robinson, an exciting new voice in Irish writing.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A confident new voice in Irish Fiction. Dark, funny and wonderful characters By bleachhouselibrary 4.5 starsA mature student, a struggling artist and a small time drug dealer cross paths at a Galway house party and while their lives are all varied, they each have their own story to tell. Stevie is embarking on her PhD in medieval history and is hopeful that she can now begin to live her life in a broader sense. Joe (Kavanagh) is still not sure what he wants to be when he grows up, despite completing an art degree. He has a mash-up of temporary jobs, a penchant for booze and weed and dreams of tattooing tourists in Thailand. Pajo is a stereotypical, wannabe drug dealer with a small-mind and big ideas. He treats his women as bad as he can, yet they keep coming back for more. The aspirations of these fictional residents of Galway are limited and the stories inevitably cross over during the course of the novel.The advance reviews for this title were strong. Comparisons were made to some of Ireland's modern literary talents and the front cover quote from Nuala Ní Chonchúir, which states 'This is a writer who is here to stay' is a fine accolade for a debut author. The stunning, and ethereal, cover design is also note worthy for its effective simplicity. It cries to be picked up from a display shelf of over-thought paperback designs, and the need to turn the wrist and read the back cover is almost instinctual. The blurb is fairly generic and conceals the high standard of writing and depth of the narrative, actually understating the overall package of this piece. This is not just an average story of boy meets girl or friend becoming foe. It's a story of cause and effect. How a new friendship can change your perspective on life, how your goal posts can shift as the days and weeks progress. How one persons idea of love is another's nightmare. The power of overwhelming expectations, from within , is part of Stevie's story. What she had envisioned as a fulfilling journey, through academia, brings old scars to the surface and she attempts to ignore the warning signs. Kavanagh is loved up, beginning to see his future on the horizon and even plans his great escape from Galway. Meanwhile, Pajo is concerned with an attempt to muscle in on his business and keeps his ear to the ground, while keeping his women on their knees, literally.There are some razor-sharp observations among the 250 pages of this book. The characters hop off the page and take on a life of their own. Galway is described honestly and without rose-tinted glasses. Admirably, the author tells of the local's boredom, and often resentfulness, of the 'Irishness' of the City. The continuous playing of Galway Girl in the shops and pubs, the 'traditional' meals served in restaurants and the annual influx of tourists are hard to avoid in such a small area. There is a common thread with each character. They each have little or no dealings with their families. They have escaped to Galway, not realising that it can be just as cloying there as in the family home.Not a huge amount happens in this novel. Just like real life, the humour comes from everyday happenings, ordinary people and one-off occurrences. The kind of 'you'd have to have been there' moments, that we have all come across. There is a bohemian feel throughout the book, the characters each having a spirit of freedom that comes with having no responsibility. A mixture of dark comedic scenes, fantastic characters (Gavin, a fellow PhD fellow was just incredibly funny) and powerful writing make this an assertive debut. A new voice in literary fiction, but a confident one.

A Disturbing Satire on Alcoholism By Raeden Zen "Who has not, a hundred times, found himself committing a vile or a silly action, for no other reason than because he knows he should not? Have we not a perpetual inclination, in the teeth of our best judgment, to violate that which is Law, merely because we understand it to be such?"The dangers of alcoholism combine with the macabre in this chilling tale about a man who loses his perception of reality and commits atrocious crimes in the process.The bottom line: right up there with "The Pit and the Pendulum," in my opinion, with its ability to shock and entrall. Again, Poe proves you don't need 1,000 pages to craft a memorable story.-Raeden Zen

FINDING YOURSELF By JOYCEJOHNSON This book is very insightful about identifying your individual feeling of rejection, the contributing factors of rejection, how those feelings can be generational, our responses to rejection. This book directs you to biblical scriptures and offers case scenarios. In my opinion it is not a book that can be read hastily. However,personal reflections/case scenarios will spark your continued reading. Some words may seem misspelled to some readers the but are not. It is my belief that the authors are not American writers - do not let that discourage your reading of this book Excuse Me... Your Rejection Is Showing. About the Author

Herman Melville (August 1, 1819 – September 28, 1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and poet. He is best known for his novel Moby-Dick. His first three books gained much contemporary attention (the first, Typee, becoming a bestseller), and after a fast-blooming literary success in the late 1840s, his popularity declined precipitously in the mid-1850s and never recovered during his lifetime. When he died in 1891, he was almost completely forgotten. It was not until the "Melville Revival" in the early 20th century that his work won recognition, especially Moby-Dick, which was hailed as one of the literary masterpieces of both American and world literature. He was the first writer to have his works collected and published by the Library of America.

Cloyce Smith The six stories collected in "The Piazza Tales" range vastly in theme and subject, from the allegorical travelogue of "The Encantadas" to the haunting psychodrama of "Bartleby, the Scrivener." With the exception of the title story (which was original to the collection), they each were published in "Putnam's Magazine," where they were well received and widely read. Although the book (like all of Meville's later work) was a commercial flop, the stories are highly regarded--and rarely read--today.Opening the volume is "The Piazza," a charming (bordering on precious) pastoral sketch that frames the collection in much the same way that Hawthorne and Irving framed their collections with a stroll around the Manse or a view of Bracebridge Hall. It provides an almost romantic and (for Melville) rare excursion into "fairy-land" in the daylight of the countryside surrounding his home, but at the close of the story the author warns us that "truth comes in darkness."The best of the five remaining pieces is, surely, "Bartleby, the Scrivener" (possibly my favorite story written in English); it is the most Kafkaesque story not written by Kafka. The narrator, a Wall Street lawyer whose office resembles a claustrophobic dungeon, hires Bartleby, a supremely competent copyist who subverts the safe order and hierarchy of the firm when he replies "I would prefer not to" when requested to execute tasks he'd rather not perform. From the first act of rebellion to the end of the story, the atmosphere resembles Poe as much as it anticipates Kafka; its bleak views of the market, of madness, and of municipal estrangement are unsettling.The other stories vary in quality. The wickedly subversive satire of "Benito Cerenno" is based on a true incident in which a transport of slaves overtook their captors; Melville revises the original narrative to condemn the covert racism of the narrator, a "Massachusetts man" who captains the ship that encounters the mutineers and whose liberal, patronizing opinion of the Africans is so unnuanced that he is unable to recognize that a rebellion has occurred. To modern readers, it all seems ridiculously unbelievable and, while remarkably ahead of its time, Melville's version of the episode sometimes suffers from attitudes and stereotypes which have themselves become unfashionable and uncomfortable.Interesting and clever, "The Lightning-Rod Man" and "The Bell Tower," are ultimately unmemorable, but the only tale that doesn't work for me at all is "The Encantadas," a series of ten travel sketches based on Melville's trip to the Galapagos Islands. Rather than presenting a literary version of Darwin's earlier travels, Melville emulates Dante, presenting an allegorical vision of purgatory on earth, of "cut-throats" and "tyrants" and "cannibals" amidst the dichotomy of the landscape's unforgiving harshness and overwhelming beauty. Of the pieces in the collection, these ten sketches received the most critical attention during Melville's lifetime, and they are still considered masterpieces by academics. There are inarguably brilliant passages and poetic descriptions, but the allegory seems labored and the "tale" as a whole pales in comparison to either Darwin or Dante.

Peterson Published in 1856, THE PIAZZA TALES contains three moderately long stories and three relatively short ones. The short ones can be skipped. The three long ones are among Melville's more notable works; two of them are special.1) "Bartleby, The Scrivener" is a classic story, arguably the second most important thing that Melville ever wrote. Andrew Delbanco places it "among the great achievements of world literature."Bartleby is employed by a Wall Street lawyer to be a copy-clerk. At first he seems to be an almost ideal employee, quietly staying in his assigned corner and doing prodigious amounts of work. But when asked to do anything other than copying -- anything whatsoever, whether running an errand or putting his finger on a string to aid another in tying the knot tight over a stack of papers -- Bartleby quietly, firmly says, "I would prefer not to". Eventually his employer learns that Bartleby has taken to sleeping at the office. He never seems to eat, except for ginger-nuts. After a time he declines to work altogether, even to do any copying. When told that in that event he must go, he answers, "I would prefer not".To tell what becomes of Bartleby would deprive the first-time reader of the singular experience of finding out for himself. Suffice it to say that the tale becomes Kafkaesque (sixty years before "The Trial"). One interpretation -- prompted in part by the story's subtitle, "A Story of Wall Street" -- is that it is an allegory for what capitalism does to its clerical minions. But that doesn't really capture "Bartleby": it as a story and Herman Melville as an author operate at less pat, deeper levels.2) As difficult as it is to do justice to "Bartleby" in the space of one-third of an Amazon review, it is equally so in the case of "Benito Cereno". The novella remains one of the foremost works of American fiction to address the pervasive insidiousness of slavery and the stereotype-ridden simple-mindedness with which supposedly enlightened, well-meaning whites regarded Negroes. (E.g., "Captain Delano took to Negroes, not philanthropically but genially, like other men to Newfoundland dogs.")Melville presents his complex morality tale through the story of two ships that meet by chance at a remote island in the Pacific off South America. One is a New England seal-ship; the other turns out to be a Spanish slave ship. It takes the entire novella for the American captain to learn the story behind the anomalous social structure aboard the slave ship and why its captain, Benito Cereno, is so haggard and acts so frightened and squirrely. It turns out that there had been a rebellion aboard the slave ship and that the Negroes now control it; they had orchestrated an elaborate charade to fool the Americans. The American captain was indeed taken in, and it is easy for modern readers also to be deceived by "Benito Cereno" and to misinterpret it. The novella plays on white fears of slave rebellion, it suggests that such rebellion is justified, and it gives the lie to the popular perception of blacks as inferior to whites in intelligence, cunning, and bravery. One writer who recognized "Benito Cereno" for what it is was Ralph Ellison, who used a crucial extract from it as the epigraph to "Invisible Man".3) "The Encantadas" is a profile of the Galapagos Islands, then also known as the Encantadas, or Enchanted Isles in Spanish. It consists of ten sketches, several loosely connected. It is partly history and natural history, partly travelogue (Melville had stopped there during his years in the Pacific), and partly fiction. The high points are a sketch of the Galapagos tortoise, the story of a Chola woman marooned on one of the islands after her Spanish husband and her brother died in the surf before her eyes, and the tale of a misanthropic castaway, Oberlus, that strikes me as a precursor of sorts to the fiction of Borges. The content of "The Encantadas" might be only one cut above the ordinary, but the prose is two cuts above. It is different than the prose of "Moby-Dick", less protean, a tad more restrained and relaxed, at times even charming.

Despite the cold, dark setting, it is more comical than most of his works other works. This satire tells about one door-to-door salesman, and how annoying, pushy, and arrogant he was to his perspective customer (Doesn't seem like a lot has change since then), and how he ends up getting thrown out of the house. The story The Lighting-Rod Man jumps right into the story in the first paragraph and just goes, which makes it much easier to get into and a much easier read for those that have a hard time getting started reading. I feel that it is worthy buying The Piazza Tales even if you just read this one story let alone the five other stories.

The first Christians to meet Muslims were not Latin-speaking Christians from the western Mediterranean or Greek-speaking Christians from Constantinople but rather Christians from northern Mesopotamia who spoke the Aramaic dialect of Syriac. Living under Muslim rule from the seventh century to the present, Syriac Christians wrote the first and most extensive accounts of Islam, describing a complicated set of religious and cultural exchanges not reducible to the solely antagonistic. Through its critical introductions and new translations of this invaluable historical material, When Christians First Met Muslims allows scholars, students, and the general public to explore the earliest interactions between what eventually became the world’s two largest religions, shedding new light on Islamic history and Christian-Muslim relations.

When Christians First Met Muslims: A Sourcebook of the Earliest Syriac Writings on Islam, by Michæl Philip Penn

From the Inside Flap "Michael Philip Penn’s When Christians First Met Muslims is an extremely important text. The sources Penn collated in Syriac are among some of the earliest reports we have about the emerging community there. Scholars of the latest of 'late antiquity,' of early Byzantium, and of the early community of believers around Muhammad will benefit from having these sources in English. Penn's scholarship is truly superior.” —Ellen Muehlberger, author of Angels in Late Ancient Christianity “Syriac sources preserve our earliest historical information for Christian-Muslim encounters, written by Christian contemporaries who experienced firsthand the massive changes brought by the Arab conquests of the seventh century and thereafter in the Middle East. This volume offers a new collection of vivid and lucid translations that open to the reader new vistas on how religions interact, adapt, and flourish, even under circumstances of inexorable change. Michael Penn is a religion scholar of rare dexterity in handling primary sources, secondary scholarship, and cutting-edge critical theory, all with equal command. Here is a volume for scholars and students of religion, history, and culture. It will matter enormously for all who share an interest in Christianity or Islam.”—Susan Harvey, Willard Prescott and Annie McClelland Smith Professor of Religious Studies at Brown University "As a source for the early Islamic period and for the earliest responses of Christians to the new historical conditions of the post-conquest period this collection is a useful tool for both scholarly research and classroom teaching. Even those few of us who work on Syriac sources do not commonly have an immediate grasp of the range of texts covered in When Christians First Met Muslims. This handy book will contribute to a further appreciation for the unique variety of perspectives Syriac Christians had on early Islam."—Adam H. Becker, Associate Professor of Classics and Religious Studies at New York University

About the Author Michael Philip Penn is William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Religion at Mount Holyoke College and the author of Envisioning Islam: Syriac Christians in the Early Muslim World and Kissing Christians: Ritual and Community in the Late Ancient Church.

Right now I plan to buy copies for several people I believe would benefit from the information contained in this volume. This book provides a translation and a contextualized summary of each of the written references to early Islam by Syriac Christians, in chronological order. This book is suitable for specialists and non-specialists alike, but those familiar with 7th century Middle Eastern History will derive the most benefit from this work. Much of the scholarship on Muslim-Christian interaction is based on Byzantine or Frankish sources and the history of Islam is written using sources written in Arabic. By translating the early Syriac sources, Penn provides an overlooked point of view in early Islamic history and Muslim-Christian interaction, of Christians who lived within the caliphate as Islam developed in the Rashidun and Umayyad caliphates.

I agree with A.J. though, on his review points, however I must also admit I read most of A.J.'s papers available on academia so I may be a bit biased. Overall though it was a good read and great for someone getting started in this subject area.

Deus There is little doubt that Michael Penn’s book When Christians First Met Muslims will establish itself as a sourcebook for students of early Islam. However, while the material presented is excellent and even for me sometimes new, it contains very little surprises.The positive of this book is that Penn’s translations are very easy to read. They are put in modern English and could almost be used as a bed-time lecture. The way he structured every document throughout his book is excellent: a statement of faith of the sender; a beautifully written context; a short manuscript history; and a definition of the authorship; followed by the translations.This book never deviates from the consensus – and that is a problem. Students of early Islam know that it stinks in Mecca, and nobody has yet cracked open the riddle of how this all came about. So far, all trails are cold. Thus, providing a commented sourcebook that does not at least ask some pointed questions about its own evidence appears rather futile.First, it needs to be disclosed that I have written two critical papers on the Umayyads, their conversion to Islam (or lack thereof) and their relationship to Muhammad (both for free on Academia.edu). In other words, I am intimately familiar with the consensus but also with fringe ideas. But, as everyone else, I have no definite answers since the hard evidence is very thin, and all literary documents are problematic.Here is the issue: when everybody knows that the traditions reflect wishful thinking, old brooms cannot swipe clean. Penn states that some writers excluded ‘heretical’ texts by their competition. They should be assessed critically, he says. However, it does not prompt Penn to question whether the authors are actually of the faith that is generally assumed. Neither does he seem to realize that some of the writers made some extraordinary claims worth investigating. In addition, he writes that some texts had been fathered upon personalities of old. But he does not seem to take into consideration that every single text could have derived from questionable sources, and that every text has perhaps undergone changes to reflect the zeitgeist of later times. The landscape of religious fraud is colossal, and in the absence of firm evidence, we have very little other than numismatics to build a solid foundation. The process is easy: take an existing history and inject your own story; have your father convert to Mormonism post mortem; edit old books from another faith into yours; put words into another’s mouth. The possibilities have no end, and the elders sometimes even bragged about how they could forge handwriting. Then as now, they knew how to choose old parchments. If anything, ancient crooks were not stupid. We know today that convenient ‘traditions’ would have started to appear right after a religion’s rise to power, rather than decades or centuries later. Do we have to assume that it is any different with Islam?This is a minefield, and to untangle it does not come easy. Everybody who has not studied the facts from the very beginnings of Judaism and Christianity (Penn has a strong background in both) through to Islam and also everyone who has a vested interest in one of the Judaic sects perhaps approaches the discourse with a bias that essentially disqualifies them. What it takes is a broad understanding of the true mechanisms of (Judaic) religion through time and space.To illustrate the problem, Penn faithfully repeats the traditions of the conflict between Muawiyah and Ali. He notes that Ali is at times missing where he should be prominent. But if this person is not there, it might be imprudent to repeat what is suspected by some as false. Of course, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, and Ali’s non-existence would unleash the Rapture. However, it provides for clues for students where to take a closer look. His appearance in the Maronite chronicle might be due to an edit or to a later composition that had already absorbed tradition in the service of self-aggrandizement. Also, there is the issue of ‘civil wars’ between early ‘Muslims’. What if these were not civil wars but religious wars? At the current, poor state of research, every door needs to remain open until a path is found out of the maze. Penn should care less which reputed scholar may accept something when there exists no evidence at all or when he delivers counter evidence. He claims that the word ‘Islam’ had not emerged before the rise of the Abbasids. But the consequences do not surface in the rest of the book. The point is: if the context is false, how do we understand what the writers are trying to say?Perhaps in the pursuit of simplicity and linguistic beauty, Penn creates a dis-service to the student by translating critical words into terms that may have a consensus (which is subject to changes). To translate the tayyaya as Arabs is fine as long as the author says Arabs [tayyaya]. Although it is all fuzzy, these are important stones to the puzzle, in particular since we know that there must be two kinds of Arabs, the good and the ugly. When the original term is removed, it leaves the puzzle unsolvable. Even if the introduction provides for sort of a key, when it is lost in the text, it leaves the doubt, which makes the documents unusable unless the student double-checks the Syriac originals. For example, he translates the word hanpa as pagan, which is ok as long as it reads pagan [hanpa], even though there are different possibilities. The word pagan is indeed more problematic than the Syriac term. It has very little to do with Paganism (which was marginalized at this time), and the word appears in sources from various sectarian and religious (!) backgrounds. It is simply a derogatory term for those outside of any given sect. In Penn’s own work, even the Jews are branded as Pagans (Jacob of Edessa). In other words, it is certain that hanpa does NOT mean pagan in the modern sense of the word (and gentiles might also be a mistranslation). Instead, it is a (perhaps derogatory) term for a (Judaic) sect that had already been active at the time of the book of Acts and appears to be on the path to Islam, which may thus inherit the designation naturally. Another problematic issue is with the word Muhammad. Here too, the author would have dramatically improved his work if he would have put down Muhammad [MHMD]. Despite the consensus, there is an increasing number of scholars that recognize that MHMT is not MHMD, which may not be the Prophet Muhammad either. Even though highly reputed scholars accept the historicity of Muhammad, the leader simply does not appear in the evidence until AFTER 632 AD, his undocumented (!) year of death. He slips into the role of Amr al-‘As with the Chronicle of Khuzistan. In other words the ancient inventors of the traditions outsmarted the modern scholars. Since it is a sourcebook, I do not anticipate a discourse about these issues, but I expect the author not to repeat traditions or to make decisions that are based on traditions when his evidence does not support or contradicts them.Through Penn’s comments, it appears that he is unfamiliar with much of the symbolism in the documents, and he seems, at times, uncomfortable with Koranic doctrines or with the various meanings of Christian technical terms. Who can blame him? These expressions mislead the unsuspecting researcher into believing that there were only a few sectarian (main) divisions. But there were many more, and Penn might have been better off in following his gut feeling. In Penn’s translation, Jacob of Edessa contains precise theological statements that are identical with the Koran (3:40). When held against Sebeos where Mu’awiah declined Jesus as the Christ, it allows for exclusion of some of the (technical) groups. Jacob also holds the Hagarenes against the Jews who rejected Jesus as the Christ. According to Jacob, the former built a unity of Jesus the man with the spirit, i.e. the Word of God. As other contemporary authors claimed, the doctrine is a resurrected form of Messianic Judaism, described by the writers as like-Arianism (man carries the Word of God, perhaps close to Arian-Adoptionism or Appollinarism, man carrying the Holy Spirit, but not God). The problem is that all boundaries became fluid at sword point, depending on who held the weapons at any given time during the previous century or so. Yet, the novelty seems to be the focus on the role of the spirit (rather than the human-divine natures of Jesus). This could then be a rare mirror of the seventh century concerns of Maximus the Confessor (as it is believed), which had rocked the religious landscape from Seleucia to Rome.Bar Penkaye lays out a doctrine where the western Umayyads use ‘the immortal who was crucified for us’ to describe Jesus. The passage does not need to be dissected here other than stating in bold and capital letters: this is NOT Islam – but what is it? Also that the Deceiver in Pseudo Methodius pretends to be like God on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount is Muslim ANATHEMA (yet, it may be Abbasid). These are rather remarkable comments by the ancient authors that cannot be left by Penn without at least a hint of awareness. It also appears odd that bar Penkaye still awaited the deceiver while the ‘beast’ sat on the Temple Mount. Should he not have arrived seven decades earlier? Who then is this deceiver?In the East Syrian Canons of 676, bishops are granted tax exemption. Penn takes this as evidence for Islam. However, in the text, it is the church that rules over the bishops’ exemptions, not a ‘Muslim’ leader. Besides, these taxes have been in place long before the advent of Islam. Likewise, he takes Mar Abba as referring to Islam when a sect erased the word ‘birth from the column of a page.’ Muslims have no issue with Matthew 1:25, and Jesus’ ‘birth’ presents a paradox for those only that had turned the Messiah into God. The Koran accepts the virgin birth from Mary. Instead, it disputes the stance that God has begotten a son. In other instances, Penn sticks with the comfort of the consensus even though his translation contains details that beg to differ. For example, bar Penkaye is accepted to having originated around 687 AD. However, the conquerors could not have arrived in Spain until later. The highly symbolic apocalyptical texts are even more problematic in their dating since prophesies are ALWAYS written after the facts – without exceptions. The only questions are how long after and to what purpose. But another set of questions could have been expected from Penn: where is Revelation in all of this doom? Why is there no hint of it?A major disappointment of the book is that the author removed his translations for works that someone else was about to publish. Students have to go and buy yet another book when Penn’s sourcebook should have been complete. This is unacceptable.Having said all this, I like this book, I really do – for pleasure reading. I hope that Penn picks up on the suggestions made here for a second edition. It will then be suitable for critical academia – and excellence.A.J.
