A wise and tender novel about food, friendship and marriage.' Kristina Olsson, author of Boy, Lost Grace has not had twelve people at her table for a long time. Hers isn't the kind of family who share regular Sunday meals. But it isn't every day you turn seventy. As Grace prepares the feast, she reflects on her life, her marriage and her friendships. When the three generations come together, simmering tensions from the past threaten to boil over. The one thing that no one can talk about is the one thing that no one can forget. Grace's Table is a moving and often funny novel about the power of memory and the family rituals that define us.

Review "The characters of elderly Grace and her girlfriends will draw readers to "Grace's Table" like bees to honey cake. These women don't heed the rules for ageing quietly, and they pull us into their past and present with their wisecracking talk, acerbic wit, and the quiet wisdom of their lives. But the younger characters in Grace's difficult family, street-smart, funny, nearly upstage them over a long lunch in which food is a character itself, filling this fine novel with the after-taste of roast garlicky lamb, sponge cake straight from a country fair, tomatoes fresh from the vine." --Kristina Olsson, author, Boy, Lost"

At first, I read a bit of the book, but it seemed mundane and tedious, and I didn’t get very far. I came across it again, started reading, and am very glad I did. This isn’t a book of thriller endings and plot twists, but an ordinary woman’s life examined. It’s Grace’s 70th birthday, and as she prepares dinner for her family and close friends, she weaves a tale of her life: childhood, love, marriage, children, friendship. She uses the everyday and special items in her home to spark her memory and tell her story. However, it’s a story that can be seen from a different perspective by other family members: “Families were like sand dunes, Grace decided. They shifted shape and position with even the gentlest of forces. Even a tiny puff – a shrug – could bring about change, move a handful of thoughts to a new understanding, a new authority. A gale, like today’s, and whole dunes – lives and futures – were relocated, reimagined.”

There will be twelve around the table. As she prepares the meal with her daughter, she reminisces about her life -when she was single and growing up in the country with her fairly proper mother and Pa, as a nurse , her first love, and her marriage with Des. She is now widowed and a grandmother of five. From the start, we know from her reminiscing that she has three children, but as the guests arrive, we are left waiting for and then wondering about her youngest daughter Claire. There are tensions between Grace and her daughter Susan, who has always been very protective of her father. As tensions rise to melting point we learn some of the pent up underlying truths and feelings of the remaining family members, which helps us understand a little more about the causes of their current relationships and attitudes. It is a moving book about family and also the importance of long-lasting friendships.I read it quickly and enjoyed it.
