The biblical encounter between the Virgin Mary and her cousin Elizabeth, before the births of Jesus and John the Baptist, is at the heart of Gifts of the Visitation by popular speaker and syndicated columnist Denise Bossert. She uses their story to highlight nine gifts experienced by both women as they awaited the arrival of their sons and to encourage readers to develop these gifts themselves. In her debut book, speaker, columnist, and Catholic convert Denise Bossert showcases the seasons of birth, grief, newness, and challenge experienced in the hearts of Mary and Elizabeth at the Visitation and invites readers to see these times in their own lives as opportunities to let God make all things new. Within each of those seasons, nine gifts emerge--spontaneity, courage, joy, readiness, humility, adventure, hospitality, wonder and awe, and thanksgiving--equipping readers to present Christ to the world as Mary and Elizabeth did.Bossert's encounter with Mary, which led her to Catholicism, serves as the window for discovering and exploring the gifts and helps readers look inside their own hearts to discover what the gifts of the visit between Mary and Elizabeth mean to them and how they can be Christ-bearers to others.

Review "This is a little gem of a book that both women and men will return to, again and again, when the demands of life are such that we need fresh grounding in our appreciation of humility and grace, spontaneity and readiness, thanksgiving, and adventure and awe. It is, in two words, 'a treasure.'" --Elizabeth Scalia, Catholic blogger and author of Strange Gods"Loving Mary isn't always easy for Catholics, especially converts. Sometimes the praise and adulation can seem a bit over the top. And all the various names and devotions! The 'real' Mary can sometimes get lost but, in her latest book, Denise Bossert gives all of us--converts and cradle Catholics alike--a Mary we can love through all the joys and sorrows of our lives. In Gifts of the Visitation, Bossert has written a book that will touch your heart and grace your soul by combining prayerful insight and meditation with the experience of one who has actually walked in the footsteps of Mary." --Woodeene Koenig-Bricker , Author of 365 Mary"Gifts of the Visitation is a fresh look at one of the most important moments of Mary's life--the Visitation--adeptly written through the personal experiences and meditations of a proficient and perceptive author. Denise Bossert takes you home, to Elizabeth and Zechariah's house, where the Christ and the Baptist meet for the first time." --Marge Fenelon, Author of Imitating Mary "Gifts of the Visitation not only imaginatively chronicles Mary's joyful meeting with Elizabeth, it also unwraps nine gifts that encourage would-be evangelizers to grow in their Catholic faith and in their zeal for bringing it to others." --Pat Gohn, Author of Blessed, Beautiful, and Bodacious"Gifts of the Visitation helped me to see Mary and Elizabeth in a new light and to better understand and cherish my role as Christ Bearer. It motivated me to pray fervently for an increase in these invaluable gifts, some of which I have in spades, and the others . . . not so much." --Diana von Glahn, Coproducer and host of The Faithful Traveler on EWTN"In the Gifts of the Visitation, author Denise Bossert tells a tender yet poignant story about Mary and Elizabeth and their phenomenal journey of faith, hope, and love. Bossert shares her own story, too, and, through reflection points, takes the reader by the hand, and invites them on a compelling prayerful journey." --Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle, EWTN host and author of Rooted in Love

Meaningful Reflection on Biblical Event By Patrice Fagnant-macarthur The Visitation refers to the time when Mary, receiving the news from the angel Gabriel that she was going to become the mother of Jesus as well as that her cousin Elizabeth was going to have a baby, rushed to her elder cousin’s side. Gifts of the Visitation by Denise Bossert is an in-depth look at this event, inviting readers to learn from both of these holy women.Mary and Elizabeth shared nine gifts that we are encouraged to emulate: spontaneity, courage, joy, readiness, humility, a spirit of adventure, hospitality, wonder and awe, and thanksgiving. Bossert explores how both of these women demonstrate these qualities. While so much has been written on Mary, and rightfully so, it is interesting and valuable to view the visitation from Elizabeth’s point of view as well. Bossert does this with great tenderness and insight. Each chapter includes a reflection and prayer. In keeping with the theme of nine, a novena is also included which one may choose to pray while reading the book over a course of nine days.Bossert is a convert to the Catholic faith. The daughter of a Protestant minister, this was not an easy journey for her to take, and she willingly admits that Mary was a huge stumbling block. The story of how she came to appreciate and esteem Mary so much that she wrote a book about her is well worth reading!Mary and Elizabeth “knew how to serve one another, for love of God.” God gave them the grace they needed for their respective spiritual journeys which changed the world. We can rest in the knowledge that God provides us with what we need as well. In reading and reflecting on “The Gifts of the Visitation” we can seek to imitate these amazing women and carry out God’s will for us in our own lives.

It's really a mini retreat, which takes you deeply into the hearts of Mary and Elizabeth, and uses their spiritual gifts as a map for your own spiritual growth. I was amazed at how much depth the author was able to mine from one incident in Scripture, and mixing it with her personal story was definitely a plus. The author has a beautiful way of writing that drew me in, as a novel might. As a woman, I related to the spiritual friendship of Mary and Elizabeth, but I don't think this is just a book for women. The gifts of the Spirit which they shared are gifts that everyone needs. The book also made me realize more deeply how the Lord loves to use ordinary people, people the world overlooks or even looks down upon to do great things for His Kingdom, things that count for eternity.

By Reconciled To You Spiritual Reading needs to accomplish three things for me to feel it has hit it's mark1. Reveal something about my Catholic faith I'd not considered before.2. Reveal something about myself I hadn't yet discovered.3. Provide me a new experience of prayer and reflection.Denise Bossert's book did all three and so much more. As she shared her story of conversion and the obstacles to fully embracing the Catholic Church, I remembered why I love it so much - and was reaffirmed in the truths that being born into a faith you can talk for granted. The encounters with Mary and Elizabeth, made all that more special through Denise's time in the Holy Land, inspired reflection on these remarkable women I have never considered before. Denise has even inspired me to CONSIDER a pilgrimage some day to the Holy Land. It is clear that once you've seen with your own eyes the places Jesus trod, the terrain Mary covered to visit Elizabeth, and so many other biblical landmarks - you will never pray the same way again. Who wouldn't want that experience for themselves.Until then, Gifts of the Visitation will definitely become a permanent part of my spiritual reading library. It will circulate through the year - earning a special place in my May reading (the month set aside to honor mothers - and which two more special mothers to reflect upon during that month than Mary and Elizabeth). **PERFECT Mother's day gift too!! There is also instructions and additional reading (and prayers) to use Denise Bossert's book for a 9 day novena.Gifts of the Visitation looks at the qualities of Mary and Elizabeth that every person needs to look more closely at so to strengthen them in their own lives. The Spirit of Spontaneity - with regards to our response to God's movement in our lives. The Spirit of JOY, courage, humility and hospitality - just to name a few of more of the NINE featured. I learned not only what virtues and qualities I may lack but more importantly WHY I would want to adopt them as my own - and how Mary and Elizabeth are role models to do so.
