By Monetta Harr A Catholic Gardner’s Spiritual Almanac was written “to cultivate the reader’s faith throughout the year,” according to the book cover. For me, it is more than the traditional definition of faith: it is life, it is rejoicing each day and each growing season, it is taking time to appreciate what is growing in beds in front or back yards, whether our own or our neighbor’s. I am not Catholic, so this book was incredibly educational and interesting as Margaret named and described various saints associated with months of the calendar year. In addition, month by month she does a wonderful job listing flowers and vegetables and when to plant them. But especially interesting as a reader was Margaret providing a glimpse into her own faith life as she described various liturgical seasons. The passage about a Good Friday service as a young girl, attending with her grandmother and feeling bored and hungry during the three-hour service. Then she compared that to attending as an adult, and kneeling and looking at the altar, which had been stripped to only bare essentials. The emotions are gripping: “I wasn’t prepared for the feelings that erupted when I entered the church. My first reaction was, Where was my God?”Another was describing the Eucharist in only several sentences: a “call to examine the state of our hearts so that God can nourish our souls. I see my soul as similar to the earth,” and writes about the soul being the soil “in which the seeds of faith are planted.”In other words, this book is the author’s personal journey of faith as well as a primer about everything from garden design to a table of biblical plants. Just looking at that beautiful cover makes one as anxious to dig into the book as it does to dig into the ground. A Spiritual Almanac, indeed.

Great Inspiration for Catholic Gardeners By Patrice Fagnant-macarthur "A Catholic Gardener's Spiritual Almanac" by Margaret Rose Realy is a "book designed to take your desire to be near god and find a way to make him more apparent through your gardens. We can bring elements of our faith into outdoor spaces to help us focus on prayer, see more clearly relevant Bible passages about nature and appreciate our Catholic heritage on a deeper level." Designed for an experienced gardener, it offers both spiritual and practical information on gardening.Realy offers a topic for each month: January, seeding; February, light; March, pruning; April, preparing the soil; May, beginning to flower; June, transformation and new life; July, storms; August, fruitfulness; September, harvesting; October, preparing for winter; November, dormancy and rest; and December, discerning what is of value. Each month includes "a garden theme focused on the Church's monthly dedication; liturgical events or topics during the month, Bible stories or verses related to the theme; stories of saints . . . including gardening-related saints; practical gardening tips . . . and faith-filled gardening activities." Realy includes some innovative ideas for creating themed gardens, including ones based on the Rosary, Stations of the Cross, and a Christmas garden."A Catholic Gardener's Spiritual Almanac" would be a lovely addition to any Catholic gardener's library. Even as a non-gardener, I found the symbolism and saint stories to be very interesting.

I bought it for a Catholic friend who has a prize-winning garden!!! She loves it! I peeked inside before giving it to her and was impressed by the balance of helpful gardening tips, spirituality, and its cluster of quotes. I rcommend this as the perfect gift for serious gardeners.

58 of 60 people found the following review helpful. Saved me from a bad car crash By Amazon Customer Here in New England, we have had an awful year for snow. Having had so much of it throughout the winter, I should have been driving at a much slower pace than I was, while I was driving home from work in yet another snow squall on Friday. I don't know if I thought that the snow was still lighter at that point, or what. But the roads were untouched, they hadn't been treated with salt or plowed, and as I went around a corner going up a hill at 45 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone, I lost control of the car. I was most certainly going crash into the guard rail on the opposite side of the road. I had split seconds to think about the Angels in the Sword Ritual that I had been doing in the morning and evenings, and in my mind, I called out to these Angels in sheer panic, saying "Guys, please help me not crash!" and it took a couple of seconds (it felt like lifetimes!) but I was able to get the car under control and did not crash. Not only that, but even though I slowed down a lot, there are certain spots on back roads that give me a lot of trouble when it snows, but I didn't not even have any trouble at all the rest of the way home. There is no doubt about it, the Angels from the rituals in this jewel of a book will protect you physically. You may not realize how extremely valuable that is until you are in serious jeopardy and wish that someone would come through to help you. If you are on the fence about buying this book, do yourself a GREAT FAVOR and JUST BUY IT. Do the Sword Ritual & Master Ritual and get the attention of these Holy Angels, because believe me when I say that you want them there for you during your time of need. The Master Ritual also has brought the requested peace and harmony into my life. My boss is going through a rough time in her life, she doesn't separate work from home, and she has been extremely difficult to work with, to the point where I have wanted to quit. The last week or so since I started the rituals in this book, she has miraculously calmed down for the first time in months. The Sword Ritual & the Master Ritual have greatly enhanced so many areas of my life. It was sheer luck that I came across the books written by this author, because the rituals in each and every one of his books keep rapidly propelling me towards the kind of life that I want to live. Especially this book, where you are asking the Angels to safeguard you from all harm & negativity, and to change your bad luck to good, and to give everything you do a positive boost. Having these Angels in your corner will be extremely valuable to you, this is not to miss out on.

You've practiced through Penczac's Inner Temple. Attuned to Reiki. Learned Alpha meditation, Theta meditation, and (mainly) fallen asleep in Delta. You've affirmed, zeroed, yoga'd, ho'opo'ono'onoed, taiji'd, circled, built altars, astral traveled, self-initiated, joined Masons or some other lodge, chaos'd, self-hypnotized, Quantum Touched, Theta Commanded, gone to classes, bought audio programs, video programs, internet programs, are on 10 different email lists, and banished daily.All for questionable results.Until now.If you're reading this, you haven't done it. Stop reading.The rituals are easy. Explanations are plain, in common language, and prevalent. Descriptions are many.The banishing ritual, instead of waving stuff around and chanting for 5 minutes that makes your spouse wonder if they should call a priest or exorcist, can be mentally done and felt quickly.And if you do the Master Protection Ritual for all 33 days, you'll notice threads and imbedded meanings within it, and how it is subtly changing you.Well, at least that's what I found.

By Amazon Customer This author doesn't waste any time getting right to the practical application of working with the Magickal Angels of protection. His style of writing is clear, concise, humble, yet extremely effective and powerful!I am tempted at this point, to buy all of his books. It's funny how the Universe knows just when and just what book to put in your hands at the right time. If you've run across this book, my message to you is to listen to your guidance and read it.I've read just about every book out there on Magickal Protection, and NONE of them worked like this one. Consider your problem done....over...once you read this book. It has a high vibrational energy to it, which is nice, because it allows you to take back your own power without causing harm to anyone else, or future karma for yourself. I'd rate it 6 Stars if I could. Best Book!

Smith Dr Val Webb in her latest book “TESTING TRADITION and LIBERATING THEOLOGY: FINDING YOUR OWN VOICE” argues persuasively for Lay people “doing theology”. This is Dr Webb’s 11th book as a well recognised Lay theologian within the protestant tradition of the Uniting Church.By putting the study of theology into it historical context, Dr Webb’s book should be mandatory for all contemplating serious theological study. It is comprehensive with chapters covering the definitions and history of theology through the last 2000 years. It is particularly valuable because of its autobiographical thread which covers Dr Webb’s own lay theological journey of discovery from the early certainties of an evangelical faith to the doubts that modernity and post-modernity throws at us. This brings Dr Webb’s book into the heart of contextual theology. Covered are Church, liberation, feminist, process and ecological theologies that emerge out of this approach. Such contextual theology I have found invaluable in sustaining my Christian faith through many difficult situations throughout my personal and professional life.As the title of the book suggests Dr Webb does not avoid the challenges facing the Church in constructing a syllabus for “lay theological education” that balances the claims of supernatural versus natural revelation. In particular, the view of ordination that developed in church history but was challenged by the Reformation where the passing of the apostolic succession by the laying on of hands granted a special privilege. A privilege which often consigned the Laity to second class status in theological discourse.For example Dr Webb states that “- it always amazes people to discover that neither “Fall” nor “Sin” is mentioned in the Genesis story of Adam and Eve” (Page 170), as the Church’s doctrine of “Original Sin” arises out of St Augustine’s contextual theologising of his struggles with his youthful sexual misadventures. The surprise comes when one discovers that the first biblical reference to “Sin” actually comes when God warns Cain: “ …. Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it." (Genesis 4:7b). Cain does not resist, murders his brother and in the subsequent narrative, Sin is defined as not just violence but “escalatory violence”. This I find a more useful and biblically based theology for the global human and ecological violence that confronts us today.Richard Smith

It also has a wealth of information that is very clearly explained.Val Webb speaks directly to the readers in "Testing Tradition", calling us to work out our own theology. I just hope that your book will be read by the unconvinced outside the current progressive Christian audience. I learned a lot about how what is said to be what the church believes/teaches is, in fact, either quite recent or just a swing of the pendulum back to an earlier emphasis. Her chapter progression and generous use of meaty quotations from all ages is excellent. I especially found her call for 'theological hospitality' challenging The book is ready for use as a study guide or book review. She calls for 'doing theology', which invites lay persons to examine personally, or in a group that listens to one another, the many theologies beyond a dominant christian one, therefore liberating theology, as in the title. The context of experience (as also tradition, scripture, and reason) leads the reader to "do theology". Clergy should welcome, review and share this readable book with their peers and engage lay persons who are uncomfortable in an atmosphere of rigid traditions. A book to share!!

I want to be sure that the devotional is a.) developmentally appropriate, b.) faithful to Scripture, and c.) does not heavily rely on gendered stereotypes.Brave Girls: Faithful Friends: A 90-Day Devotional is a new one in the Tommy Nelson’s Brave Girls series. I was immediately curious just by looking at the cover: 5 girls with a variety of ethnicities that are friends. The tagline of “brave girls” was also appealing to me; it’s sometimes hard to find something not labeled with “God’s princess” or “Daughter of a King” for this age group. While not horrible taglines, there is such thing as too much of a good (or neutral) thing.This devotional is set within the context of friendship. At the beginning, kids take time considering what a good friend is, and how God desires to be their best friend. The next section focuses on stories of friends in Scripture, and then they move on to tips on being a good friend, but with examples connected to animals (i.e. kittens have to learn to hunt, etc. from their momma, and also parents have things to teach girls about friendship). In subsequent sections, girls learn about how to make friends, what to do when friendships get tricky, being friends with their families, and finally a short section of “quizzes” and word searches.I would say that this devotional is heavy on friendship, light on Scripture, but not in a bad way. This devotional is no replacement for Scripture reading, but I think it’s a great way to teach young girls about friendships in a healthy way. Especially for kids who don’t know a ton of Scripture, some of the devotionals could be a bit confusing (i.e. one is about Ruth and it jumps right into the story and offers no Scriptural reference), but I think if a parent is there to answer any questions, it’ll be fine.While the devotional is probably a wee bit mature for my 6 year old, there’s no doubt that within a year or two she’ll be the perfect age.Overall, I recommend it. Friendship is a topic elementary girls don’t get tired of, and to connect it with a book that points girls towards God’s love for them- sounds like a great combination.Thanks, Booklook Bloggers, for the complimentary book in exchange for an honest review!

Simple Reading for Hard Pre-Teen Questions By Happy Elf Mom Brave Girls: Faithful Friends by Jennifer Gerelds is a 90-day situational devotional for 8- to 13-year-old girls. The paperback is 135 pages long and is on perhaps a third- or fourth-grade reading level. I'd recommend it for a church lending library, as the basis of a small group Bible study for preteens, or as a stocking stuffer at Christmas.I like the casual writing style in this book. It begins with a Bible verse, a situation, some advice, and a one- or two-sentence prayer in the conclusion.Rose is a first-grader and while she could easily read most of the devotional, she doesn't know the meaning of words such as imminent, armadillo, and Philistine.One thing to keep in mind when selecting a devotional for children is the fact that smaller people are still learning all the "rules," whereas you and I usually already doggone well know when we're leaving people out, being dishonest or changing the way we act around different friends. I think the book is perfect for preteens who are just starting to learn some of the more complicated rules and would like some guidance.I know girls in this age group want to start to take control of what they wear, where they go, and who they hang out with. I think the advice offered in the book is pretty generic and balanced. For example, when planning a party, hosts should "listen to what your guests want to do, not just what you want to do," and "help those who seem shy or afraid to join the fun," as well as to remember to "talk to everyone at some point."I received this book for free from BookLook Bloggers, but I wasn't required to give a positive review.

My daughter is 7 and this was perfect for her. I love that each day the book starts with a passage of scripture, story and then ends with a prayer. I also love that there are little activities taking things one step further and really getting the child involved with what they are reading. My daughter absolutely loved this book and loves starting her day out reading Gods word. Its a great book that encourages young girls to be brave and faithful friends while following God's word on a daily basis. The book teaches young girls through God's word that they should step out of their comfort zone to do the right thing. The length of each daily devotional is perfect for the 7-10 age range and my daughter being 7 had no problems with it whatsoever. Through 20 letters and accompanying critical and biographical commentary, she reveals a story of two men united by a shared faith but divided by style. The battle between eloquence and plainness is a literary debate hundreds of years old, with both sides suggesting the other is deficient in some way. Is it harder to write simply, or is a paucity of vocabulary evidence of a limitation of imagination and ability? Initially, in this version of the debate, Waugh seems very much to have the upper hand. Although Merton does not know this when he first writes to Waugh, Waugh has been employed by Merton’s publisher to edit the English edition of his book The Seven Storey Mountain. Writing to Waugh, he is guileless about his methods of composition, telling him: “I cover pages and pages with matter … and they … get lost, torn up, burned and so on.” If this humorous self-depreciation was intended to elicit sympathy from Waugh, it didn’t work. Instead, the novelist’s criticisms were direct, Waugh noting that “Americans … tend to be very long-winded in conversation and your method is conversational”, and telling him “it is of course much more laborious to write briefly”. Merton is clearly trying to impress Waugh with the diversity of his output: “At the moment … I am faced with a programme of much writing because we have to raise money to build some new monasteries. Most of what I have to do concerns the Cistercian life, history, spiritual theology, biographies etc. But [I am also] writing poetry and things like that for New Directions, and a wacky surrealist magazine called Tiger’s Eye that I think I had better get out of.” But his humble-bragging falls on deaf ears, with Waugh replying: “You are plainly undertaking far too many trivial tasks for small returns … banging away at your typewriter on whatever turns up”. Indeed, if a reader were to approach this book without previous knowledge of Merton’s much-loved and genuinely inspirational works, it might seem as if it were the collection of letters between a literary master and a bumbling amateur. There is a black humour worthy of Waugh’s fiction in the way Waugh keeps repeating the word “silence” when he changes Merton’s titles for the English editions of his American books (The Seven Storey Mountain becomes Elected Silence, The Waters of Siloe becomes The Waters of Silence), as if wishing the monk would just shut up. Coady increases this impression by including equally tart observations from Merton’s agent Naomi Burton, who tells him: “I think it’s perilously near the time when you are going to lose readers through over-publication” and warning him off publishing a previously rejected novel. And yet, while Merton is always deferential (sometimes wincingly so) to Waugh in matters of literary style, he seems to have the upper hand when it comes to faith. When Waugh takes on a commission from Life magazine to write about American Catholics, he appears to struggle with the task – although he did, of course, get the raw material for his novel The Loved One from the experience. Coady appears to raise an eyebrow about Waugh’s behaviour in America while touring Catholic colleges, implying that his appetite for expensive food and intemperate quantities of alcohol – as well as insistence on luxury during his travels – may not have been as conducive to religious contemplation as Merton’s self-abnegation. Ironically, it was Merton rather than Waugh who ended up in hospital with stomach problems. Waugh becomes increasingly dismissive of the value of Merton’s work, noting that he doesn’t think “it’s possible to combine a Trappist’s life with that of a professional writer”, and suggesting that the contemplative life should produce cheese and liqueur rather than books. But Waugh’s faith is challenged by his depression and – as Coady notes – by the 1950s his interest in American Catholic monasticism had disappeared altogether. She believes that Waugh became bitter about changes in the Catholic Church in the 1960s, and highlights the difference in vivacity later in life between the “physically enfeebled” Waugh and the lively Merton, who, she believes, was still in his prime when he died from an electric shock in Bangkok. Owing to its short length and its deliberately narrow focus, this pithy book doesn’t really give a full flavour of either author, but it’s essential reading for anyone interested in Catholicism and literary criticism. A collection of their letters, Merton and Waugh: A Monk, A Crusty Old Man, and The Seven Storey Mountain by Mary Ann Coady, was published in March by Paraclete Press. —Lynn Garrett, Publishers WeeklyIn August 1948, a 33-year-old Cistercian monk in Kentucky was bemused and delighted to receive a letter from Evelyn Waugh. “Dear Brother Louis,” it began, “My criticisms were really personal… I didn’t like your criticisms of the Franciscans. God knows I have no business to lecture other people about charity but I expect a higher standard from [a] professed Religious than from myself” Not a good start, one might think, to a friendship. But that is what ensued, albeit a sporadic and mostly postal one. By “personal” here, Waugh seems to have meant “subjective”, and by “really”, “in fact”. This book pairs the two sides of an extraordinary correspondence linking it with biographical narrative. Much of the latter is borrowed, and all of the letters have appeared before in various places. Mary Frances Coady has permission only to quote two-thirds of the Waugh letters because the full texts are being saved for alexander Waugh’s Personal Writings volumes of the Complete Works being published by Oxford University Press. This restriction can make for some partial readings but she has ingeniously focused the range of disparate materials into a fragmentary joint biography. It might not be particularly “scholarly” but it is certainly engaging. I could imagine it becoming essential reading for creative-writing students, or for those interested in mystical theology. The criticisms Waugh was referring to in his letter were those in one he had written to the New York publisher Harcourt, Brace about Br. Louis’ (Thomas Merton’s) Seven Storey Mountain (1948), a spiritual autobiography that was to become an international best-seller but was then being prepared for publication in America. Harcourt had sent galley proofs to Waugh, Graham Greene, Claire Boothe Luce and Bishop Fulton J. Sheen in the hope of a puff for the jacket. Waugh was probably the last of these from whom a reply was expected. With Brideshead Revisited (1945) and The Loved One (1948) immediately behind him, he was the pre-eminent Catholic novelist of the day. He also came trailing clouds of gory encounters with cold callers. Much of his recent correspondence, even with friends, had been savagely misanthropic. Merton, on the other hand, was obscure yet optimistic, and humbly cocksure. He was contemplating his misspent youth among the fleshpots as background to the story of his conversion and vocation. His writing was slangy, sometimes flippantly humorous. Surely Waugh would despise his work? Not at all. He was full of admiration, and not only provided a scintillating endorsement for the publisher but also offered anonymously to edit Seven Storey Mountain for publication in the UK: it eventually appeared in 1950 as Elected Silence. Merton had first written to Waugh on 12 August 1948. The Trappist’s tone was unnervingly intimate for a stranger. “I need criticism”, he wrote, “the way a man dying of thirst needs water.” His problem was that his trade was writing: “Father Abbot gives me a typewriter and says ‘write’ and so I cover pages and pages … and they go to several different censors and get lost, torn up, burned … Then they get pieced together and retyped and go to a publisher who changes everything …” Books had always poured out of him: poetry, novels, theology, hagiography and now autobiography. Waugh did not approve of this as a literary strategy. Mountain was good, he thought, it was important, but it was aesthetically ill-disciplined. And so began a course of instruction. “With regard to style,” Waugh remarked, “it is of course much more laborious to write briefly. Americans, I am sure you will agree, tend to be very long-winded in conversation and your method is conversational. I relish the laconic.” These letters are full of priceless advice: “Never send off any piece of writing the moment it is finished. Put it aside … Go back to it a month later …” Merton’s approach in this, and in another book Waugh edited, The Waters of Siloe (1949; published in the UK as The Waters of Silence, 1950), represented “pattern-bombing instead of precision-bombing … it is not art.” And Merton had a problem, Waugh thought, with his multiple implied readers: “[Y]ou do not seem to have decided whom precisely you are addressing.” This was about The Ascent to Truth (1951), Merton’s ambitious discussion of St. John of the Cross. As always, there was a distinction in Waugh’s mind between the spiritual message and the art of writing. But there was also a connection: crystallise the expression and the theology would shine more brightly. Under this amiable assault, Merton reacted with humility and wit. He had only two hours daily to hammer out his thoughts and thus to subsidize the monastery, the beneficiary of his royalties. He did not have Waugh’s freedom to discipline his art. His was discipline of another sort in which art was subsidiary and oddly functionalist. As it happens, he was enormously successful as a writer, Mountain remaining at the top of the US bestseller lists from Christmas 1948 for 62 weeks. And as the correspondence progresses, the roles tended to reverse. Waugh the schoolmaster confesses his “general bad temper” to his pupil and eventually seems to have turned to him for advice about the aridity of his soul. Sadly, these crucial letters from Waugh have disappeared but we can guess at their content from Merton’s replies: “Like all people with intellectual gifts, you would like to argue yourself into a quandary that doesn’t exist. Don’t you see that in all your anxiety to explain how your contrition is imperfect you are expressing an instant sorrow that it is not so – and that is true contrition. A nice though – but Waugh must have cringed at the double negative. —The Tablet

Kovacs Merton has way more fans than Waugh at this stage in the game -- but in my case, both of these amazing writers have directly affected my spirituality. So the fact that this small volume of their letters has been published is a cause for rejoicing. Although their correspondence was short, the completely unique personalities of these men come through in every letter.The only glitch is at the end of the book, when the action is wound up quickly with an account of each man's death. The author describes the Second Vatican Council as "a breath of badly needed fresh air for most Catholics" and dismisses Waugh as a stick-in-the-mud because of his extremely negative reaction to the destruction of traditional Catholicism after the council. The implication is that Merton, the "hippy monk", was thrilled with the "fresh air" of the council. Nothing could be further from the truth -- see Jim Forest's biography of Merton (Living with Wisdom) for more details. This biography -- one of the best on Merton -- is not listed in the references of this book, so perhaps the author did not do as much homework as she should have.

Reflections on Catholic writers By robert miecznikowski As a engineer who wishes to someday author a book, I found the letters between Merton and Waugh full of advice. Advice on writing and on living. As someone who has read their books their letters provided greater insight into their writing and lives. I wish that others can find how our lives change as we grow in our lifetime.
