Codependency author and expert Darlene Lancer explains the narcissist’s mind and motives and the personality of their partners. Dealing with a Narcissist reveals the unconscious forces driving their mutual attraction and relationship dynamics and sheds light on the damaging impact narcissists have on their partners and children. This is also workbook with strategies that can improve your self-esteem and help you maintain your self-respect and set boundaries with addicts, narcissists, an abusive parent, co-worker, or other relationship involving partner abuse. If you were at first charmed by a narcissist, you soon must contend with self-centeredness, defensiveness, and escalating criticisms and demands. Whether a parent, boss, or partner, trying to satisfy them can feel impossible. It neither stops abuse, nor produces genuine caring and reciprocity. You end up frustrated and hurt that your feelings and needs are dismissed or ignored. Steadily, your self-esteem, confidence, trust, and independence decline in the relationship, as you give up more of yourself. If you want to improve your relationship or are ambivalent about staying or leaving, Dealing with a Narcissist - 8 Steps to Raise Self-Esteem and Set Boundaries will provide clarity and tools to handle interactions with difficult people. You'll strengthen your self-esteem and gain the ability to set boundaries and communicate effectively. Eight steps are recommended with specific exercises and techniques, which are applicable to any relationship with a difficult person—whether passive-aggressive, controlling, abusive, manipulative, or with a borderline or narcissistic personality disorder.

Darlene Lancer will give you 8 steps to raise your self-esteem and set boundaries with difficult people. This book is a self help guide that will help you journal questions and answers to help you with people with personality disorders or even finding out how your childhood could be the cause of your failed relationships in adulthood. Darlene Lancer will ask thought provoking questions, give exercises to help you realize if a loved one is a Narcissist person with traits you will know or not after evaluating your own assessments covered in this book. It is suggested to keep a journal while reading this book and that is what I have done. I have also read all of Lancer's books and felt that the co-dependency book is a book you need to read also. I learned that if I grew up as a people pleaser, feeling unlovable, rejected, invisible, unheard and ignored that I am a co-dependent and part Narcissist because of the dysfunctional family life I was raised in. "It can be hard to empathize with Narcissistic people, but they do not choose to be that way, they bear scars from childhood." I have learned more about myself and those around me by reading this book than if I did not. One great lesson is "Don't Take It Personally." If you think you or someone you know is a narcissist person, has boundary issues, relationship issues, or a personality disorder than this book will help you learn how to deal with it in 8 easy steps. © 2015 Jackie Paulson

Fred Rogers was one of the most radical pacifists of contemporary history. We do not usually think of him as radical, partly because he wore colorful, soft sweaters made by his mother. Nor do we usually imagine him as a pacifist; that adjective seems way too political to describe the host of a children’s program known for its focus on feelings. We have restricted Fred Rogers to the realm of entertainment, children, and feelings, and we’ve ripped him out of his political and religious context. Rogers was an ordained Presbyterian minister, and although he rarely shared his religious convictions on his program, he fervently believed in a God who accepts us as we are and who desires a world marked by peace and wholeness. With this progressive spirituality as his inspiration, Rogers used his children’s program as a platform for sharing countercultural beliefs about caring nonviolently for one another, animals, and the earth.

To critics who dared call him “namby-pamby,” Rogers said, “Only people who take the time to see our work can begin to understand the depth of it.” This is the invitation of Peaceful Neighbor, to see and understand Rogers’s convictions and their expression through his program. Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, it turns out, is far from sappy, sentimental, and shallow; it’s a sharp political response to a civil and political society poised to kill.

Peaceful Neighbor: Discovering the Countercultural Mister Rogers, by Michael Long

Review “The urban legend says that Mr. Rogers was a hero because he was a ninja-like Army Ranger. Michael Long, more rightly, demonstrates that Fred Rogers is a hero because he was a seemingly ordinary man with convictions of peace who sought to use his television program to help children experience the love of God. Parents and church leaders will be inspired by Rogers’ wisdom to carry his true legacy to the next generation.”―Steve Johnson, Family Ministry Consultant with the National Center on Biblical Parenting“Long shows how, in addition to helping children cope with personal concerns about sibling rivalry, sharing, and fears, Fred Rogers led them gently through moral/ethical explorations of the some of the most complex societal concerns of the late 20th century, like the harms of war and the necessity of peace, as well as hunger, greed, and the environmental costs of consumption.” ―Susan Linn, Ed.D., Director of Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood and author of The Case for Make Believe: Saving Play in a Commercialized World“We know Mr. Rogers was a gentle soul, but we did not know, until Michael Long’s Peaceful Neighbor, that Rogers’ nonviolence was shaped by his profound theological convictions. In this insightful book, Long makes clear that peace is a challenge to the imagination, and helps us imagine peace through his eloquent portrayal of Fred Rogers.” ―Stanley Hauerwas, Gilbert T. Rowe Professor Emeritus of Divinity and Law, Duke Divinity School

Finding the "Fred" behind "Mister Rogers" - revealing, well researched, and respectful By Junlei Li Do you want to know Fred the REAL person, or are you content with the "domesticated" image of Mister Rogers? The author set out to do the former. Unlike three previous attempts at writing or documenting Fred (Tim Madigan, Amy Hollingsworth, and Ben Wagner), this book does not rely on exclusive personal relationship with Fred Rogers, but on materials that are accessible to anyone (if they come and visit the Fred Rogers Archive, located at the Fred Rogers Center, Saint Vincent College.) I am the co-Director of the Center, and as a personal reader, I find this book VERY informative - though I had never met or spoken to the author during his research visit here. What I appreciated the most in this book is that the author put key episodes of Fred's television show in its historical context - whether it is the Vietnam War, the race riots, Cold War, or Gulf War. Then, he uses Fred's speeches, letters, and other original source materials to piece together his understanding of Fred's thinking behind the more subtle television expressions. Reading this book, I realized that putting his work in the context of historical events adds a richer understanding of Fred's legacy, making it even more relevant to the present and the future. Now, some of the criticism people may have for this book is its political perspective (liberal, clearly), compared with the apolitical books about Fred from Tim Madigan, Amy Hollingsworth, and the documentary by Ben Wagner. I was initially uncomfortable with the political labels assigned to Fred's work (e.g., "pacifist", "progressive", "radical", "feminist"), though I do not disagree with the interpretation. However, what makes this book unique from the other three I mentioned is that this book is mostly about Fred, not about the author himself or his connection to Fred. The author made very good use (and made meticulous notes to cite original source, down to the box number from which he retrieved the item from the Fred Rogers Archive) of Fred's original words. I appreciate the rigor of research. Guided by the author, anyone can find the same sources based on footnotes and read Fred's words by themselves - and they can create their own meaning. And, having read much of Fred's hand-written notes, I do very much agree with the author that Fred had an "edgy" side. Fred was no "wimp"! There are deep convictions and steely resolve behind the gentle voice and presence. The author makes a very, very strong case about Fred's objection to war and violence in his time - and that is inspiring and thought-provoking even in today's context. Some may object to the book because the author interpreted Fred's work through his own "lens" - but I must ask, "How else would one write a book about Fred?" Fred is so personal to so many people, including those who have never met him in person, that our memory and image of him is deeply personal. We can ONLY see him through our personal lens.If you are really interested to know the person behind the warm television image which most of us find so "agreeable" (as in we find him agreeing with us, rather than understanding where he is really coming from), the book is worth a careful read.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. you will love reading this book By Leah Ntuala If you watched Mister Rogers as a child, you will love reading this book. Every time you sit down to read it the theme song will play through your head and you will will find yourself transformed back into his television home. However, this book gives you a behind the scenes look into the Neighborhood beyond the context of your home. In Peaceful Neighbor, Mister Rogers and his gentle spirit are revealed not a gimmick or ploy, but true to who Fred Rogers was as a human being. It wasn't done to sell you products that would make you whole and complete. He lived an intentional life. Every thing he did was not perfect, but it was done with the purpose to show love and acceptance. Instead, this book reminds you of the tools that Mister Rogers gave, freely. He gave us, as viewers, the ability to do the same. He encouraged each of us to be who we are and allow others to be who they are, working together with love, thought and acceptance to create a neighborhood where ever we may travel. As I read the book I found once again an inner peace. I thought more deeply of my actions, my tone of voice and if they were loving. It wasn't a simpler time he lived it; his neighborhood wasn't only on PBS, it was a decision he made everyday to love.

Best for Niche Audience; Social Justice, Child Psychology By SeattleBookMama I confess I was intrigued by the title and description of this biography. Mr. Rogers came on television when I was entering adolescence, and so I didn’t watch it for myself. When I had children of my own, I tried to limit their time spent in front of TV, and so I tended to watch Sesame Street with them and then reach for the off button. But my son wanted to see Mr. Rogers, and I confess that although the magic escaped me—who wanted to watch this dull man with the puppet on his hand, seriously?—my son, who was three years old, thought differently. I watched the little smile play on his lips as Mister Rogers spoke to him, face straight into the camera. It made my kid feel better. And so I decided to plunge into this biography and see if I could figure out what made the show so appealing to little kids. I went all the way through a Master’s degree in education and came out still clueless, so why not? Thank you to Net Galley and Westminster John Knox Press for the DRC. The title was published in March and is available for purchase. On the whole, I never did find the magic, but from an analytical standpoint, I could see where the work done by Fred Rogers was effective. He treated small people with respect. He was an expert in the psychology of very young children, and his show was crafted around gently, reassuringly addressing some issues that parents might not know how to talk to their children about. This is not to say that he had a superior attitude or spoke down to parents, when he acknowledged our presence, but I was a mom who had spent my entire pregnancy unemployed, sitting around the house reading books about pregnancy, childbirth, and the raising of young children, and I had no idea that my son had been afraid he might go down the drain after the bath was over. And I watched his little face light up when Mr. Rogers sat at the piano and sang, “You can never go down, never go down, never go down the drain!”The first twenty percent or so of this biography deals with Rogers’ religious beliefs, and I nearly had to stick myself with a pin to stay awake through it. The guy was a pacifist, and so although he was ordained as a Presbyterian minister, his belief system and his quiet, subdued manner was largely that of the Friends, or Quakers. So for those who have a strong interest in examining the intricate details of faith as it relates to war and children, this will be more absorbing than it was for me.Just at about the point at which I had decided that grabbing the galley had been a mistake—seriously, 176 pages and I had only read twenty percent? It felt like forever—and gave myself permission to skim and review this thing, it became more interesting. And although I think the author very much overstates his case in calling Rogers “subversive”, I agree that he openly, if subtly and carefully, disagreed with Presidents Reagan and HW Bush about the wars in the Middle East, and before that, with the Vietnam War. He never carried a sign, our writer points out several times, but chose to work behind the scenes and to use his television show as a platform for peace.“War isn’t nice.”He was no radical; during the Civil Rights movement, rather than encourage integration, he held fundraisers to buy supplies for the African-American schools that were separate and entirely unequal, to try to level things out a little bit, one school district at a time. Good luck with that. But the real gift that he gave to small children was that of absolute acceptance. Children were valuable no matter what they looked like. He acknowledged that we feel mad sometimes, and talked about ways to work out the mad without hurting anyone. He recognized that sometimes girls want to play with machines, and sometimes boys might like to hold a doll, to dress it and pretend to feed it. His was a gentle persona, and he let everyone know that men can also be nurturers. And when a company presumed to use his likeness on a tee shirt with a gun in his hand, he took their ass to court and made them not only stop selling those shirts, but destroy every last one they still had in their possession or for sale.He also had blind spots. He was raised in a wealthy family—Mr. McFeely, the neighborhood postal character in the Make Believe neighborhood where Mr. Rogers filmed, was also the name of his grandfather, who built the family fortune. And at Christmas time, the staff of Mr. Rogers’s TV show each got a nice card with a note saying he had made a gift in their name to a charity; but one of the staffers pointed out to the author that some of them were paid very low salaries, and sure could have used the holiday bonus instead.A documentary that was filmed about Fred Rogers was made with the understanding that the cameras must not show “the tasteful opulence of my home”.Ahem.The writer does a fine job of analyzing where Fred Rogers stood on all of the key issues of the day before his rather sudden death due to stomach cancer. If this man was important to you, or if you have an interest in the connection between social justice and religion, or children’s television shows, this might be a great book for you. If you are not interested in religion, you may want to skim through the first chapters and get to the meatier parts.Either way, Fred would’ve liked you exactly as you are now.

Jared's reflections on the journey are simultaneously refreshing, entertaining and inspiring." --Bill and Gloria Gaither's Homecoming MagazineWith humor, an energetic spirit of inquiry, and bold belief that he can go anywhere and meet anyone in his quest to deepen his prayer life, filmmaker and debut author Brock takes readers on a world tour, getting prayer advice from Pope Francis, storming the gates at Billy Graham's mountain hideaway, and sitting down for a chat with folks at Westboro Baptist Church. Along the way, he learns something of "the practice of the presence of God" (the definition of prayer according to 17th-century monk Brother Lawrence), trust, reverence, evangelism, and the need for silence. This book is not one that explores the prayer traditions of communities across the world empathetically, but a story of a broad--though not deep--pilgrimage of a young man finding his way. Ostensibly writing an ecumenical and interfaith journey, Brock can push the line with his humor, at times coming off as uncharitable, disrespectful, and culturally insensitive. Readers will certainly discover something new about prayer, though not all will be amused.--Publishers WeeklyJared Brock and wife, Michelle, were stuck. Church raised, and well versed in theology, as they got older, both realized they wanted more out of their prayer life. So they decided to do what medieval pilgrims did: go on a journey in order to devote their lives to living prayerfully. This entertaining book records their faith-filled adventures. Starting in their hometown, Hamilton, Ontario, the couple travel around the world, making stops in New York City where they dance with Hasidic Jews; go to Vatican City intent on having a meeting with Pope Francis; tramp along "the world's most famous pilgrimage route," the Camino de Santiago in Spain, where Brock learns, much to his surprise, the main route is within earshot of noisy traffic for over 90 percent of the time. Other stops include Israel; Mount Athos, Greece; England's Lake District; France; and South and North Korea. After a year of serious study and travel Brock concludes that he is just at the beginning of his journey. "I now know of all the things I don't know." Fun and insightful.--BooklistJared Brock takes us around the globe on a whirlwind adventure in prayer. The first two chapters were a riot of mirth. I laughed until tears roll down my cheeks, and I was only up to page 26! The rest of the book is peppered with humor throughout as we join Brock on his incredible journey in "A Year of Living Prayerfully: How a Curious Traveler Met the Pope, Walked on Coals, Danced with Rabbis and Revived His Prayer Life."A veritable who's who on prayer, Brock delves into the lives of many great prayer warriors, both past and present. His prayer pilgrimage starts in Hamilton, Ontario, but takes him, and occasionally his wife Michelle, to numerous locations worldwide, including celebrating Passover with Hasidic Jews in Brooklyn and following the footsteps of Jesus in Jerusalem. Whether sitting in silent contemplation with Monks on Mount Athos, Greece, meeting Pope Francis in Rome, braving a hurricane at the end of the Camino in Spain, or cleaning the toilets at the Taize community in France, you can be sure that Brock will enlighten you with Christian history, and humour.Although prayer can be both subjective and personal, I believe that Brock's journey to discover a deeper prayer life speaks to all of us. A highly recommended read for all those seeking a more active and profound prayer life.--Christian Review Magazine

From the Inside Flap Hi Everybody! Last year I embarked on an adventure - a year of living prayerfully. I had no idea what a crazy year it would be. I hadn't planned to walk across a bed of hot coals. I didn't in my wildest dreams think I'd get to have lunch at the Pope's house. I told people I wanted to spice up my prayer life, but this year wasn't about stuffing cilantro in a burrito- it was about learning how to cook. I felt a deep need for power in prayer as I tried to advocate for victims of human trafficking. Centuries ago, people went on long spiritual journeys called pilgrimages. These trips helped people to refocus on things above. Somewhere along the way, we've lost that practice. I wanted to rediscover it. This book is a record of my modern-day prayer pilgrimage, written for all those who can't take a year off to traipse around the globe. I wrote this for you.

About the Author Jared Brock is the heavily bearded co-founder of Hope for the Sold, an abolitionist charity that fights human trafficking. Jared has written for Huffington Post, Esquire, Catalyst, and Relevant, and his work has appeared on CBC, WDCX, 100 Huntley Street, and The 700 Club. He is happily married to his best friend, Michelle, whom he first kissed in the seventh grade (at a Newsboys concert.) Visit LivingPrayerfully.com for more.

I am listening to this book for the second time because Jared is a courageous, hilarious, faithful, adventurous, encouraging, and prayer inspiring Canadian fool for Christ, eh. This book is a combination travelogue, comedy of errors, history, theology, Pilgrims Progress, "Gullible's" Travels, and if they were Roman Catholic his wife, Michelle, would be well on her way to being canonized a Saint. If only GK Chesterton's wife were around they could start a support group for the wives of the very peculiar and gifted. If you would like a very deep and very shallow, very "light" and very weighty ( "glory" in Hebrew) story you should try this. If you happen to be an atheist like C. S. Lewis once was, you should read this just to find out who is having the most fun. Or if you happen to be the dictator of North Korea you should read this to find out why freedom is going to come to your people. No kidding.

By Rebekka Drago If you read my blog, you know I review a lot of books. Most of them get good reviews. (After all, I get to choose the books I want to review, so why would I choose a book I think I'm going to hate?) But there are a few books that I consider a MUST READ. For example, in the children's category, I consider The Jesus Storybook Bible a must read. In the marriage category, The Fruitful Wife and Fierce Women are must reads. And in the "autobiography/biography/hysterically funny, yet capable of making you weep" category is "A Year of Living Prayerfully: How a Curious Traveler Met the Pope, Walked on Coals, Danced with Rabbis, and Revived His Prayer Life." Its a definite, for sure, absolutely, undeniable MUST READ!!!!I really can't say enough about this book. Its the story of Jared Brock's one year journey around the world to study the prayer habits and beliefs different Judeo-Christian groups. As the title suggests, he spend time with Jewish rabbis, fire walkers, Greek Orthodox monks, and even met the Pope! His stories are both hilarious and touching. Mr. Brock has a way of really bringing you into the journey with him. I laughed hysterically at his gaffes at the Jewish Passover dinner (knowing that I would have made some of the same mistakes), nearly snorted my coke when he described his wife's mikvah experience (think "holy skinny-dipping") and cried when he talked about George Muller's sixty-three year, eight month long prayer for an unsaved friend. I was angry, as Jared was angry, when he described the meeting he had with members of a certain hateful so called "church" that has made a name for itself by picketing funerals. And I laughed so hard I nearly fell out of my seat when he described his "chant" during his fire walk across flaming hot coals.(By the way, speaking of his chant, this brings me to another interesting thing about Jared's book - the footnotes. While the footnotes in most books are sited references from other works, Jared's footnotes are more of "extra comments" of his own, sometimes adding a little historical context and sometimes just adding another coca cola-snorting laugh. So when you read this book - and you MUST READ THIS BOOK - please do not forget the footnotes!!!)I really can't say enough about "A Year of Living Prayerfully." Its beautifully written, touching, insightful, and hilarious. It will make you rethink prayer. It will make you rethink your relationship with God. It will touch your heart. And so I'd like to end this review with a few of my favorite quotes from the book:"In silence, we commune with Christ.God didn't speak to Elijah in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. He spoke to him in a 'still small voice,' what one commentator calls 'a voice of gentle silence.'If two people sat down for dinner and both of them talked the entire time, how much would they hear of the other person's point of view? Silence is a gift that allows us to turn a monologue into a dialogue. Without silence, there is no conversation. Without silence, we miss a large part of what God has to say.""Prior to my year of living prayerfully, prayer was simply asking for the keys to the car and money for the mall. Now, I'm just trying to hang out with Dad.""I've come to realize that prayer is the main dish, and everything else is gravy.I am convinced that prayer can change everything. We must never take prayer lightly - every prayer has the potential to change the course of history."I received a copy of this book, free of charge, from Tyndale Blog Network, in exchange for my honest review.

Trube Summary: Jared Brock and his incredibly patient wife Michelle go on a year long pilgrimage that takes them to the Vatican to meet the Pope and to Westboro Baptist Church and many other places alternately delightful and weird in a quest to deepen their prayer life.OK. I was really prepared not to like this book. It appeared to be a knock-off of A.J. Jacobs' A Year of Living Biblically and Rachel Held Evans' A Year of Biblical Womanhood. Frankly, I thought the cover a bit cheesy (although reminiscent of Jacobs' book).I was pleasantly surprised. What I found instead was an alternately amusing and thought-provoking spiritual pilgrimage that not only deepened the writer's prayer life but challenged mine.Beginning with a conversation that described the movement from crisis praying to kingdom prayer, Brock and his wife embarked on a journey taking him to New York, Israel, Europe, Asia, England and back to his home in Hamilton, Ontario. They began by praying and celebrating Sedar with a group of Orthodox Jews. Daily prayer with the men of the synagogue renews his thirst for prayer. In Israel they encounter the crassness and commercialism that exploited the center of three major faiths. Brock can only pray for Jerusalem's shalom, and in that the shalom of the world. He goes to Mt. Athos in Greece and experiences both silence and the Jesus prayer. Then they head off to Italy and through a strange set of circumstances, a meeting with Pope Francis. Francis says that "prayer was opening up your heart to God" and asks them on parting to pray for him. From there, they went on to Spain and hiked a short distance of the Camino in winter and looked in vain for one who received the Campostela (a certificate for hiking the equivalent of 124 miles).God answers their prayer while waiting in line at the airport behind a man who had done just that. He spoke of completing the walk in silence, communing with God. France, the kitchen of Brother Lawrence, and Taize' were their next major stops. Most moving was the account given them of the assassination of Brother Roger, who founded Taize', and those who continued the prayers, and extended forgiveness to a woman who did not know what she was doing.Apart from a Quaker prayer service and an attempt to meet Billy Graham, who was too frail to do so, the next part of the book gets weird. They visit a "nudist church" and meet some very unconventional Christians carrying out ministry to a population few try to reach. They are encouraged on their own to try sitting naked before God in prayer. They meet a physician who prays as well as heals the sick, humbly and with sometimes miraculous results, and then attend a Benny Hinn crusade that seems more about prosperity (at least Benny's prosperity) than a gospel of healing. Then weirdest of all, they visit a Tony Robbins conference that ends with walking on burning coals. This section closes with a visit to Westboro Baptist Church and the determination to pray down the love of God upon this benighted and hate-filled church. After a risky journey to North Korea and a visit to Yonggi Cho's church in Seoul, the Brocks end up in England visiting Keswick, where he finds the photo of a young Scotsman who was one of the first Hundred who followed Hudson Taylor into missions with China Inland Mission. The young Scotsman was his great-great-grandfather. He is challenged by the "boiler room" in Spurgeon's church--the prayer meeting that fueled Spurgeon's ministry and the prototype of modern 24/7 prayer. He ends in his home town of Hamilton, at a site of a revival in the 1850s that was part of the Third Great Awakening. The narrative is broken up with quotes by either the individuals he is meeting or famous "people of prayer". One of those I appreciated most was this by St. Teresa of Avila: "You pay God a compliment by asking great things of Him." Brock's writing style is conversational and even colloquial at places making the book an easy read. Yet I had several "takeaways":The silences as well as our words are important, not only in singing but in prayer.Prayer is about communing with God, about being in God's presence and carrying that through our lives.Prayer is something done in and through our embodied life. Finally I was struck anew with the transformative power of prayer.I will close with this quote from Karl Barth found on page 308: "To clasp the hands in prayer is the beginning of an uprising against the disorder of the world." Perhaps in such a disordered world, living prayerfully may be the sanest response._____________________________________Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. excellent resource for the novice warrior By desertmama Excellent book. I'm not very well versed in spiritual warfare and I felt like this book gave me a great background and place to jump in right away. It is very equipping with many example prayers that you can adapt to your own situation. He gives good explanations on why these areas should be prayed over, he covers a broad range of topics, and he gives interesting anecdotes to illustrate his point. I appreciate his clear writing style (very easy to understand and follow) as well his transparency in life (this makes it all very relatable as he seems like a "normal" person with issues we all deal with). I use the example prayers so much that I had to order this in paperback too so that I could easily flip to these. I can definitely feel the authority and power of God on me as I pray these! As someone who sees into the spiritual realm regularly, this author's insights in spiritual warfare are a must-read!To quote the author "If you do this type of covering [prayer] every day, you will see results. These prayers have their basis in the Scriptures and as such they are legal rights that I am claiming over my family. Do this for a month and you will have a different atmosphere in your home. Provide protection to the degree that you have been given the power and the authority to do so. Your family will have an increase in the peace that passes understanding." I am so excited to try this!

Rather than getting bogged down in pedantic theological discourse, the author gives a lot of practical "how to" tips for immediate application. A great resource. Can be utilized alone in or in a small group study setting.

The Bible is clear, we are engaged in a battle whether you choose to fight (even believe it) or not. This book is a great tool to help you turn and face the enemy, which is the only way to defeat him...

In 1977 the Trust published this remarkable account of the first 60 years or so of the modern church in Korea (mainly North Korea). William Blair (1876 1970), in his first term of missionary service, was at the centre of the great revival of 1907, and his account of this and the events leading up to it forms the first part of the book. Blair includes a thrilling description of how the gospel first came to Korea. The account is then taken up by his son-in-law, Bruce Hunt (1903 92) born in Pyengyang, now the capital of North Korea who shows how the revival was followed by a baptism of suffering under the Japanese and Communists. During his forty-eight years of missionary service in Korea, Hunt personally knew many of the Korean Christian martyrs. This new edition of The Korean Pentecost has been completely re-typeset, and includes twelve additional illustrations. The account is then taken up by his son-in-law, Bruce Hunt (1903 92) born in Pyengyang, now the capital of North Korea who shows how the revival was followed by a baptism of suffering under the Japanese and Communists. A Must Read for all Korean-American Christians By Jin Chung As one who has grown up in the Korean-American church, I have always been curious about the foundings of Christianity in Korea. This is an excellent, first-hand account of the work of the first Korean missionaries during the early 1900s. It also contains incredible descriptions of the sufferings endured during the Japanese occupation and the subsequent Korean War. I found it to be quite inspirational.

By missionaries William Blair and Bruce Hunt, this book covers the first 60 years of the Gospel coming into Korea. The title “The Korean Pentecost And The Sufferings Which Followed” gives a hint of what you will discover here. It is hard to comprehend so much happening in 60 years and that the ministries of two missionaries went through it all. What the reader gets through it all is a strengthening of faith, the amazement of seeing God’s hand at work, and the inspiration of others serving our Lord through tribulation and even death. The authors well tell a story of the preparation for the Gospel in Korea before Mr. Blair arrived. The story of the seed sown by Robert Thomas in 1865 in chapter 3 is one you will never forget once you read it. It moved me in a way nothing has in a long time. Then the work is described until in 1907 the Lord graciously sent revival. It is so compelling to read of real revival, what it looks like, and what transpired. Negatives as are present in any revival were not hidden, but they were few. As you read you will catch yourself praying: “Lord, send such a revival today.”The second half of the book tells of the sufferings that came next over several decades, first at the hands of the Japanese, then from the Communists. Amazingly, the work of the Lord continued to grow though sufferings reached horrific levels. The book was never about gratuitous violence, but just enough to explain what happened. What says more in the reader’s mind is the calm, pure dedication to Christ of those who suffered. When we have no idea of what we may face, it is good to read of what can be true in Christ in the worst of times. The authors were humble and made the stories about the Korean Christians, yet I believe I discovered two more Christian heroes in them. This is the kind of story that needs to be in every home. More than merely biography or history, it is a gripping portrait of what Christianity should be.I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Great Book By alice osiecki The opening line of The New Chinese Medicine Handbook states 'If you have picked up this book, you are searching for answers....' IndeedI had little understanding of Chinese Medicine when I reached for this book. I had recently been diagnosed with a fatal illness and was scared, overwhelmed, hopeless and at a loss as to where to begin. Working with Misha Cohen guiding me through the chapters, I gradually moved from hopeless to hopeful, dis-ease to ease, and simply living my life to embracing it with strength and happiness.Conceptually the book is like creation of a new recipe - beginning with the inspiration, gathering ingredients and then layer by layer creating a unique life sustaining, emotionally nourishing and delicious stew that is always on hand.Part One of the book clarifies the context and complexity of illness from the Chinese med mind/body/spirit prospective. The information is presented clearly enough for the uninformed lay person and thorough enough to provide information to eastern and western medical professionals.Part Two addresses practical steps that can be taken, from how to choose a Chinese medicine doctor and what you can expect from them, nutritional supplements, to diet, movement and meditation recommendations. These chapters include recipes, massage techniques, how to begin a meditation practice. Many of the recommendations address specific Chinese medicine diagnoses.Part Three sets forth a path to incorporating all of the knowledge and options and moving forward on a wholistic, mindful, and informed way.I recommend that all seekers accept the book's The New Chinese Handbook's invitation to this shared healing journey.

By Amazon Customer If you are looking for a book that is a thorough culmination of 40 years of wisdom in patient education in the realm of Chinese medicine, this is the book to have. In simple and clear narrative, all the terms that a practitioner would use to inform their patients are addressed here. Everything from basic TCM theoretical concepts, to complete self-care programs to an expanded appendix can be found. The addition of the Western overview of conditions is welcome as it helps to explain the varying conditions as well as expanding on the layout of self care programs. One can tell the amount of work that Misha has put into this book and her genuine compassion through her generosity to share with all of us.
