About the Author Dr. Francine L. Hernandez has a doctorate in pastoral care and counseling. She is a board-certified pastoral counselor, chaplain, and clinical pastoral educator with the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy. For the past twelve years, she has trained ministers and lay people in the art of self-awareness. She is the organizer of the “I'm Just Saying Women's Retreat.” These retreats are geared toward helping women discover untapped power of personal transformation through a narrative approach. It captured so much of my life paths, from childhood to adulthood. Life works in mysterious ways, and we we may not always follow the path that we have intended to, but we will always end up exactly where we are suppose to be.And sometimes in order to get to our desired outcome, we need to navigate our way through the storm and hold onto the only thing we have at the time-Blind Faith,that everything will work out in the end. Allowing others to Define you :Being judged by your physical attributes as an adult; in a society that constantly strive for perfection, is hard enough, but understanding those judgements as a little girl, can be quite a challenge. I quickly learned as I went through life is that we all encounter many people along the way who will attempt to tear us down and break our spirit.It is truly up to us to decide how we allow others to make us feel and whether or not we allow them to shape us into a person we are not. The Safety Pin has been a Great source of connection to the power and presence of God for me. I chose to focus on balancing my Vishuddha (the throat chakra). I use to be introverted and shy (under-active), then I as I grew older I over-compensated becoming slightly domineering and isolated (over-active) as Lena described. Following her steps, I soon felt a sense of clean. However it went away shortly after...I need to keep practicing. I fully recommend exploring this book with an open mind!

A Time Gone Forever By Roger Buckingham To a lover of Social History in general and that of Cornwall in particular, this book is a 'must'.Quiller-Couch (Q) wrote 'The Delectable Duchy' with a love and a respect for the common man. Cornwall is a part of England where a comfortable living was almost always out of reach of the average inhabitant relying as they did on two staples : mining and fishing. Mining has always depended on the market price for metal. In Newlyn they call the south east wind the 'starvation wind' because the fishing boats could not enter or leave harbour in the days when sail was the only propulsion system.'Q' captures the mood of the times so well that the reader can almost smell the salt wind and old ropes: the mewing of the seagulls and the ferocity of the ever present wind. He can and does lapse into the vernacular very well which gives added emphasis to the poignancy of some of the stories.This is a collection of short stories, with each one a different facet of the Cornish psyche. Tears of sympathy, empathy and, conversely, laughter follow each other very quickly.To a reader interested in conditions of the late 1800's, I thoroughly recommend this book.R.E. I really identify with the bridge club. I know all these ladies, the competitively flawed. What fun to read the shenanigans, from the battle of the signs to the who will win the gossip wars. You simply must witness the pain of change when those you want to be the bad guys, are the good guys, and the good ones, well.... Fun fun read.

They come alive on the pages and you want to know more and more about them. Each character has a story and the author expertly weaves those stories together that culminates in one great story. There were times I laughed out loud, cried and even cheered while reading it. I'm hoping there is a sequel!

By KGR When I began reading, I immediately thought of Steel Magnolias as the character Nell could have passed for Weezer’s long lost cousin. One of the first scenes happened in Lottie’s beauty parlor, also reminiscent to Truvey’s salon in the same movie. I was pleasantly surprised when the similarities ended there.The story followed several main characters, some quirky and others a bit less believable, but their differences made up the backbone of a typical small town in the south.Although I didn’t feel there was much of a plot consisting of goals, obstacles and conflicts, there was an enjoyable story told between present day and flashbacks. There were a few epiphanies, a few lessons learned and a humbling experience or two, enough diversity to keep me reading. I thought the letters to the editor were a nice touch lending to the small town feel.The one relationship I thought struggled a bit was the one between Boone and Jasmine. It wasn’t the relationship as much as their dialogue. I understand they are newlyweds, but even at that, often it was too sugary to be realistic.Another dialogue issue I found was unnatural speech. I didn’t find it through the entire read, only in a few areas (Example: Page 131, Damon tells Kevin detail for detail what happened at their sophomore football game when in real life, there would be no need to go through that kind of detailed account with someone who was also there at the time.)Another one can be found on page 99… One of the construction workers is telling Trampus that Dogwood isn’t like New York, or Chicago, or Boston… and how they don’t have smog or subways or homeless folks or fast-talking folks. Generally speaking, men are less verbal than women. That paragraph sounded more ‘speechlike’ than normal, believable dialogue. It wasn’t a huge problem with the read, just random scatterings here and there.Setting and descriptions were good, enough, but not too much. There were several phrases that were original and gave the writing poetic flow (Example: …as clients arrived and departed like carrier pigeons delivering gossip.) Rose ties up the loose ends before the last page leaving the reader satisfied.There were a few minor mistakes; one that stood out was—in modern fiction, when one speaker continues speaking from one paragraph into the next without pause, quotation marks are not used at the end of the first paragraph or the beginning of the next. This allows the reader to instinctively know that the speaker hasn’t changed even though the paragraph has. I came across a couple of instances where the quotation marks were used, even though the same person was speaking, causing me to break flow to double-check my bearings (One example, page 105, between paragraphs 6 and 7) Minor, but something to keep in mind when writing her next book and I do hope there will be a next book.I gave the book 4-stars because I did enjoy it and I felt the author succeeded in breathing life into a fictional small town and gave most of her characters a real feel even if they weren’t exactly in ‘all is lost’ situations. Not for the reader looking for complex plots or thought-provoking issues, but if it’s a light contemporary read you’re looking for, it won’t disappoint.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Lyrical writing By Pamela Trawick I enjoyed Avey’s first book, The Sheepwalker’s Daughter, and looked forward to reading this one. Both books in this series have a Mitford series feel to them—a comfortable cast of characters in a small town. And, yes, the Santa Clara valley once had a small-town personality.Avey’s delightful, lyrical tone caused me to rejoice when encountering literary nuggets, turns of phrases that are her specialty.On the flip side, the vicious opening to this book doesn’t match the tone of the rest of it and the back cover. I didn’t enjoy Dee’s whining and criticizing. Yes, she came around, but not for long. She seemed more like the hormonal teenage girl than the grandmother. There were a lot of characters to keep up with and the story dragged every time we had to wait for the room to repopulate with the necessary audience for the scene.The book contained a mystery, but it felt secondary and unimportant. I frequently wondered where we were headed during the middle and wanted the story to move along.Still, as evidenced by other reviews, the book has something for readers and isn’t one to be ignored. I look forward to the third book in the series.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Publisher in exchange for my honest review.

I have not read a whole book in a day in a long time, but this one kept me interested right from the first. All the characters were interesting and well thought out. I loved the Los Altos locale, since I an familiar with it and the Eichler houses. All fun and nostalgia making for me. I loved all the characters and got to know them better. Still love Father Mike!

Glaring Anachronisms By GraceDancer I am really disappointed to have to leave a bad review here, but I'm halfway through this book and have had to give up on it, not because the story is all that bad (although it does drag pretty seriously, and there is WAY too much backstory-dumpage), but because I can't stand one more anachronism. The author plays fast and loose with the facts of the 1960s. The book opens in 1963. Hippies were not a thing in 1963 (didn't become a thing until the middle of the decade); microwaves weren't available for the general public until 1967; there weren't really any "small computer companies" (according to my husband, who works in the industry) at that time (although I suppose one could stretch the imagination a bit on that), and there certainly weren't jobs in artificial intelligence (nor would a layperson of the era have even heard of that term). Those are just a few examples (although the hippie concept is scattered throughout the book and forms the basis for a number of events).I know there are readers who couldn't care less about the author keeping historical facts accurate. People will cry "poetic license!" But to me, if you're going to set a book in a historic time period, you MUST be accurate with your details. It shows a lack of artistic integrity if you aren't. If you ARE going to tweak the facts, then I think there should be a disclaimer at the beginning of the book explaining that you've done that.Ms. Avey could have fixed a lot of these problems with a quick look at Wikipedia. Since the concept of hippies seems to be a core aspect of this book, why did she not just move her timeline up a couple of years? Or, as I mentioned, make a point of putting a disclaimer at the beginning of the book.So -- what might have been an enjoyable story was ruined for me by the glaring anachronisms (including some modern phrases that were not in use in the 60s), and I just had to stop reading. I'm very disappointed, as I really loved the first book in this series and was looking forward to spending more time with this family.

The Laconic Detective's Last Harump By propertius In this fifth and final book in the series, we are presented once more with the questions concerning the irascible Inspector Trotti's inner demons. In his cult of personality we are given maddeningly brief, cryptic hints into what drives Trotti from his youth and constant references as to when he saw his first death, to his failed marriage, alienated married daughter, the death of his female partner in a previous book. and the list continues. He is obsessed with avenging victims by solving their murders almost to the point where he seems unconcerned with other crimes. We do not know the motivation concerning his reluctance to divorce and establish relationships with several of the women who find him desirable and make no effort to hide their interest. But Trotti has a problem and it is his alone. Even in this somewhat convoluted mystery, the murder of a disgraced past associate working as a private detective, the attempted murder of his partner and Trotti himself and the ever present Tangentopoli does not seem enough for the author because he adds tangentially interesting problems concerning a case of child abuse and a missing parents mystery which may lead him to travel to Venezuela.And this is the problem with this book i.e. too much going on and too much or too little resolved the final chapters. But the charm of this book is that Trottti's reasons are his alone and the reader is left to his own conclusions concerning this typically southern yet northern Italian. If you have experienced the true character of a mezzogiorno Italian then you know what I mean.

By madam queen This was the first of his books that I've read - I love Andrea Camilleri and Donna Deleon books so I anticipated loving this as well. I did kind of like it but I have to confess I had trouble following the plot - couldn't keep it straight. Also I find it odd that while there is mention of any number of small towns in Tuscany and Lonbardy and even Piedmonte, he never tells you exactly what city is the locale of the story - one must assume it's Florence but if you've never been to Florence, you may not recognize some of the references that would lead you to believe it takes place in Venice. I'm going to give him another shot and see how I like his other Italian books.

I would start with book 1 as character is all important to the story and Trotti develops over the 5 books. If you like Andrea Camilleri's 'Montalbano' series you should love this.Trotti is a darker character, but both series focus on characters trying to do the right thing and make moral choices in difficult circumstances.
