8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A Word of Help for a Wounded Heart By Jeff Pollard I consider Jason a close friend and a dear brother in Christ! We attended the same seminary and became good buddies. After graduation we pastored churches about an hour apart. We both dealt with reoccurring clinical depression. It is very real and even more painful. Jason ministered to me through those dark days that turned into dark months and into dark years. Jason writes from personal testimony about the "black dog" of depression. It is costly. We both wear the scars of our battles against it and by Gods grace and for His glory have become stronger Christians, husbands, fathers, and leaders on our churches and communities. I highly recommend Jasons work for your personal battle with depression and encourage pastors and lay leaders to read it and make it available to their people, especially those who are struggling with depression and anxiety. It is a balm of the Lord for the weary and depressed soul. May the Lord multiply its reach and ministry unto millions for the sake of His name!

I find myself a discouraged depressed Christian. I have a husband who has battled major depression over three fourths of our marriage of thirty years. The author has given some very good coping skills for both the depressed person and their family. I will certainly put these to use. Thank you for sharing your story. I have renewed hope that we can weather this storm.

Great book Jason By till62 A friend shared her copy of this book with me Sunday at church to see what I thought about it since I'm an avid reade and a counselor. I found myself wanting to write so many things down that I finally just bought my own copy a few minutes ago. This book is filled with practical and Biblical suggestions that are sure to be of help and comfort to many. Great book Jason. Thank you for writing it.

By S A Whaley You know what you will get with a Jason Vale juicing book.1) Why?2) How3) QuestionsInterlaced with testimonials from folks who have followed his plans with amazing success. I am one of those success stories. I first discovered Jason's work in 2008, sadly the why part didnt really stick and I was talked out of juicing (usually on day 3 of a juice 'fast.) Jason hammers home how important it is to read the first part of his books.I finally did that in January 2010 and went on to lose 80lbs and run 4 half marathons. Previously I only ever ran when I heard last call/orders at the bar.As the host of Juicing Radio - the worlds only weekly juicing podcast - I have tried many juice plans. I really like the look of this one, building on the 5:2 intermittent fast diet. I travel a lot professionally, work in sales so love the concept of 2 days of pure juice, 3 of clean eating and juice and 2 where I can eat what I want. (My guess is I won't want to eat crap based on the previous 5 days - juicing can have that positive effect.)Just one thing, especially if you are new to this. Juicing is actually very easy, Jason acknowedges in this book. The hard part is Mental Juice which will sustain you and of course how to transition out and make juicing a part of your lifestyle. We know many juicers have fallen at this hurdle, Jason Vale's latest book will help you succeed.

He's not over-the-top or lop sided. This "diet" (he doesn't like that word, nor do I because it's really about lifestyle) makes a good deal of sense.

By M.Fields Kemp uses the example of a football blitz in place of life trails and tribulation. Sports fans and non sports fans alike will find this to be an easy read. I found that the author didn't overload the book with football terms and strategies. I liked that not only did he explain how to face a blitz in life but also described how the supporting cast of friends and family play their part in overcoming a tribulation. The author puts a great emphasis on what kind of people should fill your life. Not all relationships are good ones. I found it to be a very uplifting and encouraging read.I gave this book 4 stars. It is well worth the read.I was given a copy of this book by the publisher for my honest review.

Excellent Practical Wisdom and Stories By theresa Retired NFL quarterback, Jeff Kemp, shares wisdom and encouragement about facing life's trials using metaphors and wisdom from his football career and experience. He focuses especially on the biblical principle of gaining a right mindset, which will then influence our thoughts, actions, interactions, and choices. And I also greatly appreciated his wisdom on investing in others and choosing to be team oriented rather than focusing on oneself by consuming.As Kemp details each of his tips for success in life, he shares personal stories full of wisdom, followed by very practical self reflection and application. This book is truly motivational, without the "fluff" that some inspirational books have, and I felt that the activities and reflective questions were helpful and right on point.As I have been battling through my own (health) blitzes, I have been hearing God prompting me toward many of the same things Kemp highlighted. For instance, recognizing that I can trust God and can choose to change my perspective to His perspective by accepting where I am now, and letting Him take me forward into the new things He would have for me, rather than focusing in grief on the past things and dead dreams, which are out of my control. I found so much of this book personally encouraging and life-giving, even if some of it I had heard before (whether through my own athletic experience, or through spiritual teachings). There truly is something healing about being able to focus on the solution (Jesus, and what He is doing), rather than the problems and needs at hand.I also loved Kemp's application of recognizing the family unit as a team, whereas each spouse chooses to invest in each other and their children. He expresses these truths simply, boldly and practically; and I think any football fan or athlete would relate well to his analogies.I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House.

They have provided me with this book free of charge in exchange for my honest review.I must admit that I was a bit put off when I saw the cover of this book. I am not a football fan. However, I found that I enjoyed the book very much & gleaned a lot of wisdom from it.Jeff Kemp is a former NFL quarterback. He explains blitzes in football & how they can be compared with the trials we are faced with in life, & he candidly shares personal examples from his own life. I really appreciate when an author is not afraid to talk about his or her own struggles & how they overcame them. It helps me to see that they really understand what I might be going through.I believe that Mr. Beck's purpose for writing this book was to get our eyes off ourselves & to put them on Jesus. No matter what trials we face in this life ... illness, unfairness, the death of loved ones, & a multitude of others ... these trials are only temporary bumps in the road to heaven. Yes, they hurt. Yes, they are difficult. But if we focus on where we are going, not where we are or where we have been, we can face these things with strength & courage.I have several pages in the book bookmarked with sticky notes. I believe the wisdom that Mr. Beck imparts on these pages is worth embedding in my brain.For a book that I didn't think I would like, it has turned out to be one of favorites. It just so happened that I started reading this book a few days after my sweet cat Sophie, who had been with me for 16 years, passed away, & after I had received a devastating diagnosis from my doctor. This book has helped me to deal with them & to "see the big picture." I recommend it highly.

About the Author The Rev. Father Adolphe Tanquerey, S.S. and D.D., was born in 1854 at Blainville, France. At the age of eighteen, he became a seminarian and joined the Society of St. Sulpice, harboring a devotion to the Sacred Heart of Christ and the Blessed Mother. In 1878 he was ordained a priest, and thereafter began a career of teaching, which he had a clear gift for. His famous theological works include the three-volume Synopsis Theologiae Dogmaticae and comprehensive The Spiritual Life, the latter of which was published circa 1930 by Desclee and Company, Tournai, with the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur. Father Tanquerey died on the twenty-first of February, 1932.

Great book for those interested in a deeper meaning to the spiritual life By TTM53 As a Catholic laity this is a wonderful source of information regarding the spiritual life for intermediate or advanced readers. If you are interested in a work for beginners, I suggest Ralph Martin's "The Fulfillment of All Desire." "The Spiritual Life" contains information intentionally meant for priests and spiritual leaders; however, any lay Catholic serious about entertaining a more advanced approach to spirituality will find this book to be great. I especially like the practicality of the text that can be used for one's own spiritual growth. As a psychology student I find this work incredibly beneficial to my own academic interests; the connection between asceticism and understanding the human psyche is very strong. For those interested in advancing their knowledge in the spiritual life this book is for you! If you are a priest or religious, I strongly encourage this book to be part of your library - it is very good!

Excellent overview of the 7 capital sins and virtues By Lexuesi Overall it is heavy reading, but a must for all those that want to grow in faith and fight temptations and human failings of all kinds, I would not recommend it to those who do not want to change or work toward their salvation.

Must have addition to any spiritual library By Amazon Customer Tanqueray provides a brilliant handbook on the spiritual life, the nature of the soul and what is necessary to advance in union with God. Very enlightening and inspiring. Answers many questions and provides a great deal of light on many aspects of the interior life.

About the Author Ephrem Arcement, OSB, is a monk of St. Joseph Abbey in Louisiana. Merton, Poetry, Writing, Contemplation and Prophets By MDLION I couldn't resist buying this book as its major themes are among my favorite subjects: Poetry, writing, contemplation, prophets, and Thomas Merton.Merton writes of how Original Sin can leave us open to living in illusions and unreality. The Christian, the prophet, must take up conversion and the ascetical struggle in order to live in God's Reality, the only true reality:"Adam's fall was ... the willful acceptance of unreality, the consent to receive and even prefer a lie to the truth about himself and about his relationship to God. ... The experience of falsity destroyed in him the instinctive taste for spiritual truth. Illusion entered in to spoil the existential flow of communication between his soul and God. ... The first step in all this is to recognize our true condition. Before we can hope to ever find ourselves in God, we must clearly recognize the fact that we are far from Him. ... This demands an ascetic struggle, in which our spirit, united with the Spirit of God, resists the flesh, its desires and its illusions, in order to strengthen and elevate us more and more, and open our eyes to the full meaning of our life in Christ." (P. 139)Merton writes of poets and prophets:"The poets have much to say and do: they have the same mission as the prophets ... A prophet is one who cuts through great tangled knots of lies."
