In 1 Corinthians 11, the Apostle Paul provides important instructions about two symbolic practices within Christianity. The most well-known of these practices is the Lord's Supper, found in the second half of 1 Corinthians 11. In the first half of the same chapter, Paul teaches about the relationships between God and His people. He explains that these relationships – as well as the Lord's glory – are symbolically represented when men and women cover (or uncover) their heads during times of prayer. God uses Scripture to provide His good direction in the lives of His people – but how should believers today respond to this passage? What does it take to gain a well-grounded understanding of the practice that Paul was discussing? And why did it matter to God whether or not Christian women covered their heads when they prayed? This book carefully navigates these questions by considering the relevant details of both the New Testament passage and First Century Corinthian culture. ======= This book is a companion volume to the book, "Headcovering Throughout Christian History."

Florentine I've recently been convicted that 1Corinthians 11:2-16 should be treated as a trans-cultural ordinance, based on the timeless concept of the creation order. I thought this little book did an excellent job at logically countering the common excuses people make today, which attempt to justify the dismissal of the passage. For 15 years my conscience was pricked every time I read 1Corinthians 11:2-16, and I trust many women feel the same. I'm glad we finally have some serious-minded resources to back up why Christian women are feeling compelled to shun the culture debate and return to the heart of the passage.

By tiffany This book is a condensed version that gets directly to the crux of the matter concerning women of the Christian faith covering their heads. Not just a historical study, but one that you can read quickly and decide for yourself: is this a privilege and practice I will accept, or will I disregard history and scripture? If you want to delve deeper, read the in-depth study found in this author's previous book. Just please understand this: once you read either of his books, there is a decision to be made. I wish there was also a mandatory book for men to read that accompanies these two studies; men need to know how to properly encourage and not demand this practice of the women in their lives. It's a touchy matter, I know. Ladies often recoil from being told by men how they should dress or conduct themselves. If you are a married man who is concerned about this, pray your wife and daughters through the decisions. Don't demand, lead gently. God never forces us to do things, He invites. The author does this quite well: he offers all of his findings and study work to you for your perusal - he will not make demands of you. If you want to know a list of rules to follow in order to please God (thus earning His love or forgiveness), you've missed the point. As a woman who covers, this book was an encouragement to read. It helped me brush up on some points just before I was asked to give an impromptu class about why I cover my head. This message crosses cultures; I am currently serving in Odisha, India.

Ernst With thoughtfulness and clear explanation, this e-book concisely highlights the thrust of Paul's instructions and rationale in 1 Corinthians 11 related to Christian head covering, a practice which largely fell out of practice in the Western world in the 20th century. It also addresses the most common alternative (i.e., novel) interpretations for this passage. This is an important passage for Christians to study and have some grasp on. Because the command is unpopular and misunderstood it is often dismissed without much attempt to understand its intended meaning for the original hearers and the modern church. For those seeking to highly regard scripture in its entirety, however, it is important to at least think about this fairly detailed passage and come to an informed decision as to how it applies in our own lives. (I, for one, became perplexed several years ago as to how this command seemed to be explicit, on the one hand, yet wasn't practiced by any of the biblically faithful churches I'd been a part of. This spurred an interest to locate resources on the topic and try to understand the passage.)David's longer version of this work, available for free on the Covered Glory website, is also very tightly written and is a very helpful resource on this interesting passage.David is never ungracious with those who posit the alternate views and, most importantly, manages to point to the gospel in all of this.Well done.
