In 2011 after a few undeniable experiences, I had to quit denying that I had medium abilities. I went from denial to terror. I had information that overwhelmed me, left me feeling helpless and much that I didn't even know where it was coming from. I spent a great deal of time feeling crazy. I WISH there had been a book like this when I started on my own journey. The book is classic Lisa, full of information but offered in a way that both the novice and the experienced intuitive or medium can gain valuable tools.I have no doubt this book will become a "must have" on the shelf of any person who works in the metaphysical field. If you are in doubt or just lost as to where to begin; this book should be your first stop.

The author goes into candid detail about her spiritual growth as a Psychic or Medium. She tells it in a way that is easy to read, and easy to identify with. This was a read I needed on my own path. She explains it in a way that teaches you to find your own path, yet guides you on how she got where she is. It is beautiful and insightful. To add a quote from the books pages, "It is often said that when the student is ready, the teacher appears."

Who were Barnabas and Paul? Was Paul an angry loner, misogynist, legalist, and curmudgeon, or hero and martyr? Through point and counterpoint, the author unravels Paul's message by looking at his relationship with Barnabas. The result is a fresh portrait of the Paul we only think we know and Barnabas an otherwise unheralded apostle. When the Church cannot condemn or kill a leader who upsets the status quo, it either canonizes the individual and controls his image (as with Paul) or pushes him off into relative obscurity (as with Barnabas). Paul and Barnabas started out as inseparable, close friends and colleagues until a conflict tore them apart. Barnabas of Cyprus faded into relative obscurity, while Paul of Tarsus became, apart from Jesus himself, the most influential figure in the history of Christianity and, arguably, the most maligned. By exploring their common journey, we can move beyond myths and assumptions. Theirs was a partnership that, quite literally, changed the world. The book contains study questions for individual or group study.

He has digested contemporary scholarship on multiple questions (the place of Acts vis-a-vis Paul's Letters in the reconstruction of Paul's ministry and chronology; the significance of major events like the Apostolic Council and the Antioch Incident) and presented the results in a coherent and uncluttered narrative of the ministries of Paul and Barnabas. He has attended with an unusual pastoral sensitivity (unusual, that is, for someone who is also clearly so well-versed in the scholarly questions, not for a Canon of the church) to the stages of that unfolding history and the personal and ecclesial ramifications of key moments. He has connected keen pastoral insights to the history that he tells, developing what is nothing less than a model for congregational renewal from the same. While his location in the ECUSA may suggest something of where he might come down on certain questions of who is an underdog on whose behalf the Pauls of this generation must speak, his writing is itself without particular agenda save to get churches to examine the extent to which they are structurally and practically aligned with their own mission (as well as the extent to which they have clearly articulated for themselves their mission and the heritage in which their mission is rooted). And while I disagree with some of his historical conclusions (what scholar wouldn't find something with which to disagree in someone else's book? :) ), I can affirm that they are all respectable conclusions represented by established scholarly pedigrees. There is much to gain and nothing to lose by taking the time thoughtfully to engage this book -- and to bring its questions to bear on the direction of each and every Christian congregation.

Penguin Presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Chop Chop by Simon Wroe, read by Daniel Weyman.

Two months behind on his rent, young graduate Monocle swallows his dreams and takes the only job he can find: the lowest-rung chef in a gastropub in Camden. Here he finds himself surrounded by a group of deranged, criminal hoodlums (his coworkers) and at the mercy of an ingenious sadist (the head chef, Bob).

What follows is a furiously paced, ribald, raucous, and deeply touching tale of loyalty and revenge, dark appetites, and fading dreams and a young man finding his way in the world as he is plunged into the fat and the frying pan and everything else besides.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A novel in the memoir style By Jennifer Donovan It is a novel, once again told in the somewhat confessional tone of memoir, that of Monocle, an English lit major unable to find work who begins work as a general helper in the kitchen of the Swan in London. We never learn his name, just the nickname that is given to him. His coworkers are also referred to by their nicknames: Racist Dave, Camp Charles, and Harmony, the dark-eyed girl. The book starts with a bang, with the bad language and hazing that is purportedly common in kitchens. Chef Bob is awful, sending back perfectly good plates and locking the workers in the cold storage when they have made him mad. This breaks them down but also gives them a sense of comararderie and does seem to serve to motivate them to do their best. The book is heavy with foreshadowing, which kept me reading. It moves back and forth from the narrator's past to the present events, but it works. In fact, the strongest bits of writing are when he is thinking back to his childhood and confronting his past memories. This is made easier when his deadbeat dad moves in with him, though his small flat has no extra room. This quote is an example of the moments of introspection and descriptive writing: I have happy memories of those early summers. Yet remembering them brings me no joy. Perhaps all memories are inherently sad, even the happy ones, and should for that reason be avoided. Nostalgia is not so much the recollection of the things past as the recollection of things you are no longer connected to.p.95 ARCThough I was a bit turned off by the strong language at the beginning of the novel (which continued throughout), ultimately the interesting setting of a working kitchen, and the unique way the story was told kept me reading.

Granted, there are some funny and gross stories here that gave me a good laugh. Unfortunately, not enough to rate it higher. I probably would have given it a 2, but I did like the writing style used here......conversational, first person narrative. I am a total cookbook reader and food channel watcher, so I recognized most of the terminology the author had used. But for the sake of readers who don't have the same grasp of kitchen and restaurant terminology, the author should have made many terms more clear. So, guess I'd say I've read better and I've read worse, but I wouldn't go out of my way for this one.

A tale of the Kitchen...Love, Loss, Redemption By Ted Lehmann Chop, Chop by Simon Wroe (Penguin Press, 2014, 288 pages, $26.95/$12.99) is a coming of age and reconciliation novel set in a marginal restaurant called The Swan in Camden Town, a trendy portion of the borough of Camden in London. Monocle, the narrator, fresh out of a mid-grade university with a degree in literature, finds himself estranged from his estranged parents, at loose ends, and looking for a job. He lands precariously at The Swan as commis (the lowest rung on the fine kitchen ladder), a bar with a full kitchen and a staff of misfits, in almost every sense of the word. The book is, at times, very funny, in an often dark sort of way, and sad, as we follow the lonely outcast Monocle seeking to find a real self. Overlaying the life and times of a restaurant chef lies the mysterious, soul-destroying death of Sam, Monocle's golden-boy older brother and the decline of his parents' marriage, as his father, once a professional golfer descends into lassitude and gambling, eventually deserting his once wealthy wife. This first novel contains much promise within a carefully structured and compelling story of love, loss, and redemption. The Swan is inhabited by a group of damaged men and women brought together in a kitchen that may be the last resort. The chef, Bob, is a sadistic bully who punishes with fire and ice while kowtowing to the Fat Man, the evil bully whose danger and mystery bring raw danger to the entire operation. Ramilov, Racist Dave, Dibdin, and the beautiful and mysterious Heather round out the cooking staff while two, perhaps, south Asians populate the plonge, the washing area. The Fat Man appears periodically to consume huge amounts of the menu without either joy or appreciation. The rumor that he may be a restaurant critic keeps the staff serving him their best. Meanwhile, Monocle watches, observes, and learns the ways of the kitchen, many of which sent me to the thesaurus or Wikipedia to sort out their functions. At home, Monocle's parents continue to decline, sunk in Sam's loss and their own inability to deal with the world, until Monocle's father leaves home and moves into his tiny room with him. Please read the rest of my review on my blog and consider purchasing it through the Amazon portal there.

"The Sacraments are not mere appearances, they are not rituals; they are the power of Christ; Jesus Christ is present in the Sacraments." - Pope Francis

Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist, Holy Matrimony, Reconciliation, Holy Orders, and the Anointing of the Sick - as Catholics we are familiar with the sacraments, and see them as mileposts in our lives.

But, as Pope Francis so energetically reminds us, they are not simply observances, they are portals through which the Lord brings us all the power and graces that flow from his death and Resurrection. And wonderfully, each sacrament opens us to a personal encounter with Jesus.

Now in 32 easy-to-read chapters Pope Francis reveals the truth and beauty of each Sacrament, teaching us not only what they mean to the Church, but to us as Catholics - ultimately motivating us each to share these incredible gifts with a needy world.

John Dee's legacy fails to meet that of his accomplishments. Plagued by a lifetime of anti-scientific prejudice, it comes as little wonder that he turned to the occult, but it is precisely this why history fails to record the works of this great man. From his role as the original 007, his links with the Voynich manuscript and his association with the British monarchy, Dee's life is lad bare, heartaches and hard work, forming this easily accessible introduction to the world of John Dee.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. a must read for anyone serious about growing in faith By papa loppa Loved the way the author explains it. He says that faith begins with God's word and voice. Anytime God speaks the response must be with faith. He goes on to explain that the more we understand His voice the clear picture we will have regarding how we should have faith. He explores scripture upon scripture and applies each appropriately to the Christian walk. He also explains that God ordained many of your giants in life that He may be glorified when you over come them through His strength. Then he suggests that if God ordained your works for His glory, why should you fear at all. Faith can come down to understanding His written word more accurately, he explains. While not every action of faith requires knowledge that it can be blind faith, understanding God's nature through a clear picture painted by understanding His word helps, the author suggests. Over all it was an informative, well written, good read. If you take the suggests to heart in this book it could even change your life. Because faith always has the power to change.

This was a VERY motivating book about Faith in Jesus Christ. Im going to be honest, Adam Houge is actually a Rival of mine when it comes to Christian Non Fiction and Inspirational Kindle books. He and I actually share the same beliefs, ideas, ideals, demographic, genres, and even the same fan base. I notice that his books are ALWAYS bought at the same time mine (Pastor Joey Bauer) get bought. His books and my books are very similar and we both share a love for Jesus Christ. I have an immense amount of respect for Bro. Adam, and hope he might take the time out to check my stuff out sometime, because in all honesty we are more like tag team preachers than we are rivals. This book, and a lot of his others that I have on my Kindle device are amazing, profound, and inspiring. Great Job Adam! Keep up with the 5 Star books! You deserve all the success in the world!!!

By jessk I bought a dozen of these books for the graduates at our church, I'm the youth pastor, and I was very impressed at the quality and look of them. All of our graduates were expecting to get a standard Bible for their graduations, but when they saw this instead they were super excited! They even told me that they looked forward to using it and how special it made them feel being a part of the church.I would highly recommend this book for this year, and I'm sure subsequent years also. Very classy looking and helpful to our graduates as they really begin to encounter real-world problems.

In this foreboding, evocative debut novel, the wondrous grace of those at their wit’s ends and the terrible caprices of blind faith lead from the red mud of northern Mississippi to the coal-dusted hollers of snake-handling Appalachia, where a reckoning awaits all caught up in Billy’s wake.

Killingsworth If you think William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, and Breece D'J Pancake exhausted the possibilities for writing about hapless rednecks and other Southerner types on the skids and in over their heads, think again. Chipper Thompson takes on the snake handlers and bluesmen and backwoods entrepreneurs with verve and energy. Like his greatest predecessors, he does so without sentimentality but with a rare sympathy that makes me care about these people in ways that often surprise me. The man has a feel for the landscape too and for what history and culture have become in rural America.

By Cathryn Chipper Thompson has cast a spell with his novel, The Substance of Things Hoped For — a spell that pulls the reader along in the wake of its characters’ troubles. The wearing, provoking, needy, selfish and foolhardy natures of each character deepen in turn, through this engaging ride across southern cultures and landscapes, toward points of climax and intersection that educate and inform as much as they entertain. There is so much heart in this book, hidden or glowing or very nearly irredeemable, amidst the grimy and the gritty and the malcontent of its peopled landscapes. It’s a tale worth following, a soulful view of life worth considering, long after the last page is turned.Cate Cabot, author of Uncharted: A Journey Along the Edge of Time and Survival

In 1 Corinthians 11, the Apostle Paul provides important instructions about two symbolic practices within Christianity. The most well-known of these practices is the Lord's Supper, found in the second half of 1 Corinthians 11. In the first half of the same chapter, Paul teaches about the relationships between God and His people. He explains that these relationships – as well as the Lord's glory – are symbolically represented when men and women cover (or uncover) their heads during times of prayer. God uses Scripture to provide His good direction in the lives of His people – but how should believers today respond to this passage? What does it take to gain a well-grounded understanding of the practice that Paul was discussing? And why did it matter to God whether or not Christian women covered their heads when they prayed? This book carefully navigates these questions by considering the relevant details of both the New Testament passage and First Century Corinthian culture. ======= This book is a companion volume to the book, "Headcovering Throughout Christian History."

Florentine I've recently been convicted that 1Corinthians 11:2-16 should be treated as a trans-cultural ordinance, based on the timeless concept of the creation order. I thought this little book did an excellent job at logically countering the common excuses people make today, which attempt to justify the dismissal of the passage. For 15 years my conscience was pricked every time I read 1Corinthians 11:2-16, and I trust many women feel the same. I'm glad we finally have some serious-minded resources to back up why Christian women are feeling compelled to shun the culture debate and return to the heart of the passage.

By tiffany This book is a condensed version that gets directly to the crux of the matter concerning women of the Christian faith covering their heads. Not just a historical study, but one that you can read quickly and decide for yourself: is this a privilege and practice I will accept, or will I disregard history and scripture? If you want to delve deeper, read the in-depth study found in this author's previous book. Just please understand this: once you read either of his books, there is a decision to be made. I wish there was also a mandatory book for men to read that accompanies these two studies; men need to know how to properly encourage and not demand this practice of the women in their lives. It's a touchy matter, I know. Ladies often recoil from being told by men how they should dress or conduct themselves. If you are a married man who is concerned about this, pray your wife and daughters through the decisions. Don't demand, lead gently. God never forces us to do things, He invites. The author does this quite well: he offers all of his findings and study work to you for your perusal - he will not make demands of you. If you want to know a list of rules to follow in order to please God (thus earning His love or forgiveness), you've missed the point. As a woman who covers, this book was an encouragement to read. It helped me brush up on some points just before I was asked to give an impromptu class about why I cover my head. This message crosses cultures; I am currently serving in Odisha, India.

Ernst With thoughtfulness and clear explanation, this e-book concisely highlights the thrust of Paul's instructions and rationale in 1 Corinthians 11 related to Christian head covering, a practice which largely fell out of practice in the Western world in the 20th century. It also addresses the most common alternative (i.e., novel) interpretations for this passage. This is an important passage for Christians to study and have some grasp on. Because the command is unpopular and misunderstood it is often dismissed without much attempt to understand its intended meaning for the original hearers and the modern church. For those seeking to highly regard scripture in its entirety, however, it is important to at least think about this fairly detailed passage and come to an informed decision as to how it applies in our own lives. (I, for one, became perplexed several years ago as to how this command seemed to be explicit, on the one hand, yet wasn't practiced by any of the biblically faithful churches I'd been a part of. This spurred an interest to locate resources on the topic and try to understand the passage.)David's longer version of this work, available for free on the Covered Glory website, is also very tightly written and is a very helpful resource on this interesting passage.David is never ungracious with those who posit the alternate views and, most importantly, manages to point to the gospel in all of this.Well done.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Inerrancy Defined and Defended By Michele Morin From the earliest days of Christianity, the Bible was accepted as the Word of God, inspired and inerrant. It was not until the 18th century that this belief came into question, but since that time, many mainstream evangelicals, people who believingly follow Jesus, have been shaken from their conviction that the Bible is truly “the living voice of God.” In The Scripture Cannot Be Broken, John MacArthur has collected an anthology of fourteen articles, fourteen distinct voices attesting to the truth that Scripture is the very Word of God. With publication dates ranging from 1946 to 1984, the authors, though diverse in style, are one in their adherence to the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy of 1978. The list of contributors reads like a who’s who of twentieth-century theological writers and thinkers, and I would recommend that a future edition include a brief biographical sketch of each contributor, either as an appendix or along with the bibliographical information accompanying their article. This anthology is no over-simplified pledge-of-allegiance. The writers acknowledge that our faith in God’s inerrant Word will involve “unresolved questions and difficulties with regard to the very content of this faith.” Just as the transcendent mysteries of the Trinity and the incarnation “are not incompatible with unshaken faith, so the questions regarding inerrancy are often “the questions of adoring wonder rather than the questions of painful perplexity,” (Murray, p. 51). Wherever my finite understanding comes into contact with God’s infinite grandeur, theology becomes the gateway to pure worship!Inerrancy DefinedAccording to J.I. Packer, one of the murkiest issues in defining the inerrancy and infallibility of the Word of God is that “both have been so variously employed in theological discussions that they now bear no precise meaning at all,” (p. 97). The Scripture Cannot Be Broken addresses objections, clears up misunderstandings, and fine tunes the reader’s understanding of God’s authorship and preservation of His words. Hearkening back to Augustine, Irenaeus, Origen, Aquinas, and a host of others, definitions of inerrancy center around the truth that the Scriptures are a reliable witness to the words and deeds of God through His inspired spokesmen and His incarnate Son, (Preus, p. 222). Articles link inerrancy to inspiration, authority, and infallibility for clarification, since, in defining inerrancy, “we are attempting to do more than merely define a term, we are seeking to formulate a doctrine.” Gordon R. Lewis offers an important analysis of inerrancy as it relates to infallibility: The Bible is inerrant, i.e. errorless, in the truths it asserts; the Bible is infallible in its use of language (words) to affirm the truth that it conveys.Inerrancy DefendedGiven that inerrancy is foundational to orthodoxy, it is worthy of the thorough defense it receives from the pens of these fourteen essayists. Their apologetics center around the witness of Scripture; i.e., the New Testament witnesses to the Old Testament and the organic unity of both testaments provides further internal evidence. Evangelical biblicists are not dependent upon slick mano a mano argumentation whenever doubters raise a supercilious eyebrow. To the objection that we are reasoning in a circle by allowing Scripture to speak for itself, John Frame (an author from the list for further study on page 329) replies that there is no system that does not involve circularity. For example, if one starts with the presupposition that there is no God, every piece of evidence will serve to confirm that belief.B.B. Warfield masterfully summarizes Christ’s and the sacred writers’ view of Old and New Testament Scripture, and Roger R. Nicole affirms the mystery that human instrumentality and divine influence could combine without compromise. The authors provide abundant and satisfying argumentation and a rich store of Scriptural documentation for their positions, even addressing individual details such as the fact that although copyists did make errors, these inaccuracies affect no more than one one-thousandth part of the text and are insignificant in content.Twentieth century writings on the doctrine of inerrancy are essential reading, but not because the truthfulness of Scripture is an end in itself. As much as the heart craves a sure word, theology can never be a purely academic discipline. The purpose of the Holy Scriptures is to make the reader “wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” This is an intensely practical concern, for, in the words of the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy:“The authority of Scripture is inescapably impaired if this total divine inerrancy is in any way limited or disregarded, or made relative to a view of truth contrary to the Bible’s own; and such lapses bring serious loss to both the individual and the Church.”The timeless truth upheld in The Scripture Cannot Be Broken is this: God has spoken, and His Words are preserved for us in the pages of Scripture that we may know Him, obey Him, and love Him in truth. Thanks be to God.This book was provided by Crossway in exchange for my honest review.

Harold Lindsell said our view of Scripture “is like the Continental Divide in the United States. … Inexorably and inevitably the waters find their way to their ultimate destiny, just as one’s view of the Bible determines ultimately what his theology will be” (25). Therefore, a book like The Scripture Cannot Be Broken comes with the understanding that what you believe about the Scripture affects what you believe about the world. Let’s take a look at the highlights of the book and then make some observations that would be helpful to the reader.First of all, the book is a compilation with John MacArthur serving as the general editor. He developed the content in a way that moves from a historical perspective of the Scriptures through inerrancy, inspiration, and finally infallibility. In each section there are contributions by leading scholars—past and present—on those specific subjects. The primacy of the Scriptures and their importance is carried throughout all of the chapters by all of the authors. Therefore, this is not a book with differing views on the issue of bibliology but rather a uniform approach to these varying subjects by like-minded individuals. The editing team has approached each subject with a definition, defense, and identification of what the Scripture says in those areas. For instance, inspiration is started by B.B. Warfield in establishing the parameters, developed by R. Laird Harris for a historical perspective, and finished with Alan Stibbs’ chapter on the Scriptures testimony of inspiration. It offers a comprehensive approach to each subject.Overall, it is an excellent resource. The Scriptures Cannot Be Broken could not be more timely in its reminder that what you believe about the Scriptures shapes how you view the world. But it also doesn’t commit bibliolatry in the process as seen in phrases like, “It is first and foremost not a book about a book [referring to the Bible], but a book about God, about Christ, about the salvation of man from sin” (117). The contributors have raised the readers view of Scripture while pointing them to the God of Scripture. However, this book is quite dense so approach it with that understanding. It will not be a good Christian living resource but will greatly resource your Christian living. Most likely, this will become a textbook in colleges due to its density but it is a perfect resource for those who wanting to understand the Scriptures and their self-witness. Your people, your ministry, your preaching, and your own walk will benefit from slowly working through this valuable resource.

Boling Ever since the serpent in the Garden of Eden asked Eve, “Hath God said”, Scripture has been under attack. Unfortunately, this attack is not merely coming from outside the walls of Christianity. Increasingly, the questioning of the inerrancy of Scripture in particular has reared its ugly head within the Christian blogosphere, and also within many so-called “Christian books”— written by pastors who claim to preach the gospel. Perhaps more than ever, it is vital for believers to understand why Scripture is the Word of God, why it is the authority in all matters of life, and most importantly, why it can be completely trusted as the foundation for truth. The Scripture Cannot be Broken: Twentieth Century Writings on the Doctrine of Inerrancy edited by John MacArthur is an excellent collection of essays that addresses this vital issue.Building on the work of the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, the essays provided in this timely book look at the historical elements of inerrancy, engage what Scripture has to say about itself, explore the issue of inspiration, outline what inerrancy is all about, concluding with a brief yet important look at biblical infallibility. Each essay is thorough, well-written, biblically rooted, and well worth taking the time to read.Dr. John MacArthur is a champion of engaging the issue of biblical inerrancy as attested by the recent Inerrancy Summit that was the focus of the 2015 Shepherds Conference. Gathering pastors and church leaders together to discuss biblical inerrancy reveals the continued importance of ensuring the challenges to this all important doctrine are addressed. The Scripture Cannot Be Broken is appropriately edited by Dr. MacArthur and each contributor to this effort does a marvelous job of engaging and outlining in a lucid yet approachable manner why believers should understand what inerrancy is all about and why it is so important to hang our proverbial hat on this doctrine.I appreciated that the entire spectrum of this doctrine is addressed, notably beginning with the historical basis for this doctrine to include the various controversies that faced theologians throughout the years. One can quickly see that attacks against the inerrancy of Scripture are really nothing new. Challenges to inerrancy will continue to present themselves and the conversations that continue to swirl around a number of topics related to Scripture and the repeated attempts by liberal scholars to diminish the historicity and authority of Scripture will not cease. It is absolutely essential that believers remain cognizant of these attempts and books such as this one perform a valuable function in providing believers with the tools to understand such attacks and the means to combat with historical fact and most importantly from the pages of Scripture itself those who seek to treat Scripture as nothing more than a collection of moral stories. This is a book I highly recommend to be in the collection of all believers but especially as a resource for pastors and Bible College/Seminary students. Regardless of whether one is a scholar engaging liberal attempts to push against the foundation of biblical inerrancy or whether one is a layman who may run across someone who has questions about this issue, we have to understand and be able to elaborate why God’s Word is inerrant and what that means. The outstanding essays provided in this book will go a long way to informing and empowering the body of Christ to declare that God’s Word is indeed inerrant and how to cogently and powerfully defend the doctrine of inerrancy.I received this book for free from Crossway Books for this review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. A boot camp accident, shot in the head and a three month recovery, ended his brief military career. The new police chief, Foster, was more competent than McCain's long time nemesis, Cliffie, who'd been forced into retirement. And our hero is finally in a stable relationship with a fine woman. And he's in the middle of a murder investigation. Will Cullen was an old friend of McCain's who's life was in shambles. In a firefight in Vietnam, he'd accidentally killed a little girl, act that unhinged him. Back home, he'd joined an anti-war group of Vietnam vets, another friend, gung-ho Steve Donovan, a man entering politics, had brutally attacked Will in front of a crowd. When he turned up dead the next day and Will was found with the murder weapon, naturally he was arrested.McCain is sure his friend is innocent. All he has to do is prove it.What I've always liked about Ed Gorman's writing is the clean style and the attention to detail. I was a young man living in the same type of small town during the time period. He's got it right and puts the reader squarely into a real world. Most excellent mystery.

Excellent small-town mystery about the Vietnam Era By Angie Boyter The year is 1971, and emotions about the Vietnam War are high in the town of Black River Falls, as they are in the rest of the country. Lawyer and part-time investigator Sam McCain is suffering the aftermath of having enlisted to serve his country only to be seriously injured during boot camp in a car accident that still affects him both mentally and physically. His friend Will Cullen has serious emotional problems as a result of accidentally killing a young Vietnamese girl during an assignment in Nam. When Will announces that he has joined Vietnam Vets Against the War, fellow vet Steve Donovan attacks him and savagely beats him, so when Donovan’s body is found, Cullen is the leading suspect. Sam is sure that Will did not murder Steve and vows, not only to defend him in court, but to find the real killer. The more Sam learns about Donovan’s business and personal relationships, the more he is convinced that Will is not the killer, but the town’s new police chief points to the evidence, and Sam has to admit that the evidence makes Will look guilty.Sam is also struggling with a personal problem. Still suffering from emotional problems as a result of his accident, he has told his girlfriend Mary he wants to take a break from their relationship, but he misses her and knows he has to decide whether to make the break permanent or move to make their bond stronger. The book opens with a short recounting of recent experiences by Sam, who also narrates the rest of the book, and its poignancy told me this was not just a book about a murder but a book about people.Given the era in which it is set and the nature of the crime, this could have been a very bleak book, but the genuineness of the characters and the atmosphere of the small town that Gorman has created gave it a warmth that kept me from feeling there was a pall on everyone involved. Sam has flaws, and he certainly had serious consequences from his injuries, but Sam and the other residents of Black River Falls seem like people we might know, with redeeming qualities as well as weaknesses. There are nicely-done details of Sam’s interactions with Mary and her daughters and his experience enjoying the feel of his cat Tasha rubbing her cool nose against his arm as he awakens in the morning.Having lived through the 70s, I can say that the setting is authentic, full of references that bring back vivid memories. Yes, a McDonald’s WAS a novelty in many small towns of the era! I only spotted two minor anachronisms (I do not believe in spoilers; see if you can find them yourself.).After a major red herring, the denouement of the crime was a surprise but plausible. Sam’s personal denouement was less surprising but positive. Despite the turmoil, the 70s was an optimistic era, and so is Riders on the Storm. I wish Sam the best and hope to hear from him again.NOTE: This is the tenth book in the Sam McCain series, but since I did not even realize it was part of a series until after I finished it you clearly can enjoy it without having the background from the other books.

Another Terrific Sam McCain Mystery By Benjamin Boulden There have been ten Sam McCain novels, and the most recent, published by Pegasus in October 2014, is one of the best. It is also the darkest. Even its title, in honor of the song by The Doors, is dark: Riders on the Storm. It is the sequel to Ticket to Ride, and it finds an older, more world-weary Sam McCain. It is 1971, Vietnam is full-tilt, and, as Bob Dylan wrote a few years earlier, “The times they are a-changin’.” Sam, in a short stint with the Army, is in automobile accident and for five weeks doesn’t know his own name—“My name is Sam McCain. There was a time eight months ago when I didn’t believe that. When both a neurosurgeon and a psychologist visited me every day and tried to convince me of it.”There is a mystery, and a good one too, but the story is Vietnam—not the shooting and killing in Southeast Asia, but rather its impact back home. Will Cullen, a veteran who struggles with his actions in the war, is accused of killing a local businessman and budding politician named Steve Donovan. Donovan publicly, and maliciously, beats Will Cullen at a political event because Will signed on with the antiwar organization “Vietnam Veterans Against the War.” The next day Steve Donovan is found murdered, and the most likely suspect is Cullen. A suspect both Sam and Will’s wife are dubious of, and Sam spends the rest of the novel trying to disprove. The disproving is less than easy. Gone is the incompetent and laughable Chief of Police Cliffie Sykes Jr. and in is the professional and competent, “please call me Paul” Chief Foster. Foster is certain of Cullen’s guilt, but he is seemingly fair and uncomfortably considerate of Sam and Cullen’s wife Karen. But Sam is equally certain of Cullen’s innocence and proving it becomes very personal.
