Not Batterson's best effort but the topic was more difficult to study By Mattie Ott Not Batterson's best effort but the topic was more difficult to study. I read and reread almost immediately which I don't usually do. I felt like I missed too much but it was the way it was written. Deep subject but written without that same depth. However, it is a good read and a healthy look at a subject that needs to be discussed more.

Encompassing astronomy, mythology, psychology, and astrology, Pluto offers a wealth of knowledge about our most famous dwarf planet. First observed in 1930 and once defined as the ninth and final planet in our solar system, Pluto and its discovery and reclassification throw a unique light on how we generate meaning in science and culture. This anthology, timed to appear in concordance with NASA’s New Horizons's approach to Pluto in July 2015, shows that while the astronomical Pluto may be little more than an ordinary escaped moon or tiny Kuiper Belt object, it is a powerful hyperobject, for its mythological and cultural effigies on Earth incubate deep unconscious seeds of the human psyche. Certain astronomical features pertain to Pluto in terms of its distance from the Sun, coldness, and barrenness. These also inform its mythology and astrology as befitting a planet named after the God of the Underworld. Among the issues central to this collection are the meanings of darkness, loss, grief, inner transformation, rebirth, reincarnation, and karmic revelation, all of which are associated with the astrology of Pluto. Pluto also embodies the meaning of true wealth as being nonmaterial essence instead of property, conventional accolades, ego identity, achievement. It is the marker of negative capability. Table of ContentsDana Wilde: Pluto on the BorderlandsRichard Grossinger: Pluto and The Kuiper BeltRichard C. Hoagland: New Horizon … for a Lost HorizonJ. F. Pluto: New Horizons for a Lost Horizon: Astronomy, Astrology, and MythologyFrom Grossinger, Richard (EDT)

Review “This richly and diversely celebratory collection gives us back Pluto, previously and sadly consigned to historical triviality by a one-dimensional science mind that reclassifies it as not even a planet but a dwarf, mere sky fuzz. Grossinger’s assemblage and introductory remarks show us how and why we never consented to let it go, in fact could not dispense with it, given the profound place it holds in individual and collective mind. Pluto, like death itself, is interactive with self-realization, an essential dynamic within our range of sciences, systems, psychologies, and arts, critical to our thinking. A book that clarifies while inevitably complexifying, it’s one to read on sleepless moonless nights which open sky mind to its further reaches, where Pluto lives to die another day.”—George Quasha, author of Axial Stones: An Art of Precarious Balance and Glossodelia Attrace (preverbs)   “Plutonic thrills galore underlying everything, this anthology is a blue- or blackprint for someone’s new onyx and translucent Pluto-world Moby Dick, relegating poor old Ken to some unimaginably darker, colder Kuiper belt, teeth chattering … me and Pluto howling at every passing moon.”—Kenneth Rosen, author of The Origins of Tragedy

About the Author Since the issuing of Solar Journal: Oecological Sections by Black Sparrow Press in 1970, RICHARD GROSSINGER has published some 35 books, most of them with his own press, North Atlantic Books, but also titles with Harper, Doubleday, Sierra Club Books, and J. P. Tarcher. These have ranged from long explorations of science, culture, and spirituality (Dark Pool of Light, Planet Medicine, Embryogenesis) to memoirs (New Moon) to experimental prose (Book of the Earth and Sky) and science fiction (Mars: A Science Fiction Vision). Grossinger received a PhD in anthropology from the University of Michigan in 1975 and lives with his wife, writer Lindy Hough, in Portland, Maine.

As much or as little we know about it,it is a wonderful start to introduce it to all of us as best as possible! We have very little time to play around or to pretend its insignificance. What we learn and how we react is the ultimate objective.

Have you ever come back from a vacation only to feel more wiped out than before? Does the phrase “a little R&R” sound like an unattainable dream, something you’ll “get around to” one of these days? What do you do when you need to “just be” for a while? The rigmarole of our daily lives takes a toll in energy, time, and effort. And the space and rest we need to recuperate—physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually—is usually pushed to the back burner. What we need is sanctuary, a place and space that allows us to reflect, rejuvenate, and restore. Terry Hershey’s new book, Sanctuary: Creating a Space for Grace in Your Life, not only defines what sanctuary is but why we need it, where we can find it, and how we can create it as space and habit. For almost 30 years, Terry Hershey has been designing and creating personal sanctuaries, as well as helping others practice sanctuary within themselves. With practical ideas and his signature conversational tone, Hershey illustrates that sanctuary is not a new-age fad or lifestyle upheaval; rather it’s a way to approach and embrace your daily life through a lens of grace, freedom, and contentedness.

"Sanctuary" is most certainly no exception. Most of us live on the edge, frazzled, afraid, buried in a life and lifestyle of our own making. We all need a personal private place where we can find shelter and sanctuary for our soul. As Terry reminds us, "A place where our soul can catch up with our body." Most of us live predictable lives. But how many of us are able or willing to take the time to find sanctuary? Do we take the time to ask ourselves 'What nourishes us, what do we love, what would we do if we had the time, what satisfies and inspires us, what gives us joy'? Terry guides the reader as to what to do when we are overwhelmed? How can we provide sanctuary for ourselves and for people in our lives? Terry helps guide us to answer questions such as 'what keeps us stuck and out of balance.' This book is a MUST HAVE for everyone. Terry Hershey gives us permission to become "unstuck, to waste more time, to be curious, to wonder, to laugh, to love, to daydream, to pet dogs, kiss babies and go into bakeries just to smell the air." Tuck this book into your purse or your briefcase and turn to it to remember how to live life wide open! And I suggest you buy a copy for a friend who would benefit from it. I can't think of most loving gift.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Keeper By Diana L. Hartje “Sanctuary” is not just another spiritual, self-help, or descriptive book in which we add even more information to our already-overloaded minds in our search for peace, love and joy in our lives. “Sanctuary” is a companion to our souls. Terry Hershey reminds us that we are okay exactly where we are and in who we are….right now….right here. Terry writes as though speaking with a dear friend, sharing and exploring together, thus creating a gentle space for the reader to open his/her mind and heart to the miracle of that which we already are, and to honor the space we need to renew and restore. Terry guides us gently into identifying, creating and maintaining our own personal sanctuaries. “Sanctuary” is a book that will offer comfort, companionship, insights, and even chuckles to one’s reading life. It’s definitely a Keeper.

When a water vessel is filled with dirt and stones, it cannot be used to quench a thirst. But, when this vessel is emptied, there is an opportunity to fill it until it overflows with fresh, cool, life-giving water. Water that quenches. Refreshes. Soothes. Our souls are the same: filled with fear, doubt, and disappointment. Running over with unanswered prayers and lingering questions. When we empty the mess of our lives in the presence of God, we're offered an invitation to come. An invitation that allows us to come empty - so that we can be filled until we overflow. Come Empty - Pour Out Life's Hurts and Receive God's Healing Love guides you through fifty days of experiencing the fullness of God's love and His ability to overcome life's hurts. Each day, you will receive assurance of God's presence in your difficult situations. Each devotion gives new vision and perspective when you're hindered by emotional blind spots, and leads you to experience God's peace and wholeness. When His invitation is accepted, He will set your captive mind and heart free to live fully by His grace. The question is not if you will get an invitation. The question is, will you come?

By Christine Abraham "God’s Word declares that even the tiniest seed of faith is enough. Your part is not to do the mountain moving. Your part is to simply come," writes Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith in her new devotional book Come Empty: Pour Out Life's Hurts and Receive God's Healing Love. From the first devotion, I found myself in deeper relationship with the Lord and pouring out my heart and tears to Him. The words "come empty" were driving me to hold nothing back as I worked through the journaling activities and prayed through the Scriptures. Each of the devotions begins with a heart cry message, followed by a Spirit-led response. Saundra writes, "Within the pages of this book, I share some of the hard emotions I took into His presence. Some of these were my emotions, some were those shared with me by my patients." This devotional format is similar to the Jesus Calling book, with the added feature of the BEGINNING of the prayer. So where Sarah Young shared the response to her prayers, Saundra Dalton-Smith shares the initial prayer and then the response. It's a two-step process instead of just one and shows where the communication initiated in the prayer. In both devotionals, the writers are sharing a heart message. There are 80 total days of devotions from which you will choose 50 that speak to your personal situation. Keeping in mind Saundra is a physician, some of the devotions are based on uncovering your pain. You can start with the first devotion and move forward in sequence, or you can use the topical index to pinpoint the areas of your deepest pain. The last 20 devotions are based on moving from pain to the fulfilling of the promises of Jubilee. She recommends 30-40 days working through your pain and the last 10-20 days transitioning into the fullness of all God has for you. Each person is unique and the time needed to heal is an individual process. This devotional book is a journey worth taking. Will you accept this invitation from Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith: "Life is full of invitations to come empty. Every time things don’t go as planned. Every time death comes unannounced. Every time disappointment rears its head. Every time illness strikes. Every time money is low. Every time your strength is gone. Every time fear tries to dominate. Every time faith is overshadowed by doubt. The invitations are countless. The question is not if you will get an invitation, but whether or not you will come. Will you accept life’s invitation to come empty and be filled?"Come. Empty. My book endorsement: Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith had me crying at page one as compassion pours out through her words. I couldn't put the book down and wanted to dig deeper into the daily devotions. Resisting temptation, I slowed down and worked through one day at a time for a heart-makeover rooted in Christ. I didn’t just read through this book: I prayed through it and journaled my heart. Written in conversational format, the essence is pouring out your heart's cry and listening within your heart for His reply. Christine Abraham | Founder and Ministry Director at WomensBibleCafe.comAlthough I received an advanced copy of this book for review, once it was published I bought a Kindle version and several printed versions to give to friends as gifts. I received an advanced copy of this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own. By William Griese Come Empty is a beautiful, thought-provoking, life-changing devotional that has helped me on my journey closer to the heart of God. I especially found Day 19 "Fellowship of the Beloved" to be encouraging when I was experiencing some difficulties in my church. For those spiritually thirsty, Come Empty points the way to be filled in Christ.

The author is transparent and real as she explains her own feelings of spiritual emptiness that led to the writing of this book.Come Empty is more of a devotional and journal than a standard non-fiction book for Christians. The author challenges her readers to roll-up their emotional sleeves and invite the Lord into the empty, broken, and painful crevices of our hearts. The challenge is to find fifty (50) devotionals that speak to whatever your need for the day may be (e.g., relationship with God, change, illness, etc). In total, the author provides the reader eighty (80) devotionals to choose from. Each day's topic includes a journal entry, a response from the Lord, a Scripture reading for your own meditation as you answer the questions posed, and a simple prayer at the end of the day's reading.I love to journal and the challenge to draw nearer to the Lord through the daily devotional readings is utterly irresistable to me. It may be to you, as well. Like the woman at the well, I have laid aside my water pots to say to you, "Come Empty!" and quench your parched soul.

It is easy to color, the images to color are not too small and you can finish a drawing pretty quickly whereas as a lot of other coloring books that I have tried to color, I have given up because they take forever and are not fun anymore after a while. I finished coloring the picture below in 75 minutes. I had a great time! Check out other books by this artist as well. Some of her books are two books in one and only 2 or 3 dollars more expensive than just getting one with 30 drawings.

Since the pages are single sided, the bleed-through doesn't ruin another picture. I just place a few blank pages under the page I'm coloring because color does bleed through fairly easily. I love that the shapes in this book are large enough to add my own custom flair. I have several books with very small patterns that make me feel limited in my creativity, so of all of the books I've used for my coloring relaxation and creative outlets....this one is my favorite so far.

In my judgment, the ecclesial and theological movement that began after the Second Vatican Council in Latin America under the name 'liberation theology," . . . is one of the most significant currents of Catholic theology in the 20th century." --Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig MullerFor many years the theology of liberation, which emerged from Latin America in the 1970's, was viewed with suspicion in Rome. It was the subject of a critical notification from the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and many of its leading proponents were disciplined or silenced. Now, an historic exchange between Gustavo Gutierrez, author of the seminal work A Theology of Liberation, and Cardinal Muller, the current Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Fiath, signals a new chapter in this ongoing dialogue. Cardinal Muller, a former student of Gutierrez who spent many summers working in Peru, writes with deep feeling and conviction about the contributions of liberation theology to church teaching--particularly in articulating the preferential option for the poor. In his contributions, Gutierrez lays out the essential ideas of liberation theolgoy, its ecclesail location, and its fresh enunciation of the gospel for our time.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Clarifying liberation theology By PoliSciProf "On the Side of the Poor" is a critical call to action to be a living church. More importantly, this collaboration between Gutierrez and Müller reminds us as to why liberation theology is an important gift to the global church. Müller's essays are particularly insightful as they clarify certain aspects of liberation theology (e.g. explaining its context and contribution to theology) while offering cogent reasons as to why liberation theology should be viewed as more than a mere regional theology. As the world tackles hunger, poverty, disease, and growing inequality, people of faith and theologians would be well served by reading this important follow-up to Gutierrez's classic work.

It provides excellent and very compelling advice on how to deal with your child's video game addiction. It clearly demonstrates how to differentiate actual video game addiction from being passionate about video games and what to do once you concluded that your child is actually addicted to it. This book is relevant to today's society, great book, excellent topic to talk about.

I used to be a video game addict when I was young, and 2. I see all new generetion members around me being in a worse situation than I was and I needed help for my personal challenge: to avoid my kids falling into a similar situation. Despite my couple of years in front of a computer, I enjoyed my childhood pretty much - I mean I used to run, do some crazy tree climbing, make friends and so on... But today the peril is stronger than a simple motivation of joy. Several realities of our daily environment, plus the lack of attention or interest and tolerance (as consecuence of our generation's frustrated past) are direct threats to the health of our children. I'm worried, I have no idea how to face this situation in a couple of years. That's why this book now is going to be my right hand, as it gave to me a clear view of the scene and I will now develop some of the advices and make sure I can keep my kids safe. I really recommend this guide of life, definitely.

Video Game Addiction By Avid Reader In this day and age, it is becoming far more common to see a child “plugged in” to some sort of electronic device rather than interacting socially with family or friends. Although not all kids are like this, some become addicted to video games when it becomes more than just entertainment. This guide will help you to recognize a serious addiction, and provides some great insight into what this problem looks like and how it can be treated or prevented in the first place by setting boundaries. I would recommend this book highly to concerned parents so that this serious issue does not develop.

“A haunting story about the long reach of the past.”—Maureen Corrigan, NPR’S Fresh Air

“In this intriguing book, [Nordhaus] shares her journey to discover who her immigrant ancestor really was—and what strange alchemy made the idea of her linger long after she was gone.” —People

La Posada—“place of rest”—was once a grand Santa Fe mansion. It belonged to Abraham and Julia Staab, who emigrated from Germany in the mid-nineteenth century. After they died, the house became a hotel. And in the 1970s, the hotel acquired a resident ghost—a sad, dark-eyed woman in a long gown. Strange things began to happen there: vases moved, glasses flew, blankets were ripped from beds. Julia Staab died in 1896—but her ghost, they say, lives on.

In American Ghost, Julia’s great-great-granddaughter, Hannah Nordhaus, traces her ancestor’s transfiguration from nineteenth-century Jewish bride to modern phantom. Family diaries, photographs, and newspaper clippings take her on a riveting journey through three hundred years of German history and the American immigrant experience. With the help of historians, genealogists, family members, and ghost hunters, she weaves a masterful, moving story of fin-de-siècle Europe and pioneer life, villains and visionaries, medicine and spiritualism, imagination and truth, exploring how lives become legends, and what those legends tell us about who we are.

Review “In this intriguing book, [Nordhaus] shares her journey to discover who her immigrant ancestor really was - and what strange alchemy made the idea of her linger long after she was gone.” (People)“Whether you believe in ghosts or are just intrigued by their persistence in popular culture, American Ghost is itself a haunting story about the long reach of the past.” (Maureen Corrigan, NPR's Fresh Air)“Expertly dissects fact from embroidery. . . . A colorful and engrossing quest.” (Elle, "7 Must-Read Books")“Nordhaus attacks her subject with the same scholarship and lively writing that made her nonfiction debut, The Beekeeper’s Lament, a beloved best-seller. . . . Fascinating.” (Dallas Morning News)“The more Nordhaus digs into the history and explores the supernatural dimensions of the story, the more complex and intriguing it becomes. American Ghost is a multi-genre work that succeeds on a number of levels.” (Denver Post)“Journalist Hannah Nordhaus braids personal memoir with historical research and resolute ghost hunting in a narrative that investigates the restless spirit of her great-great-grandmother Julia Schuster Staab.” (Boston Globe)“A gripping account of frontier life from an immigrant Jewish woman’s perspective. It is the author’s connection of the past where she explores the story, trying to separate the history and the myth.” (Working Mother)“Part travelogue, part memoir, part ghost story, part history. . . . Nordhaus offers a deeply compelling personal account of her attempts to better understand her own family. . . . The book’s unique blend of genres and its excellent writing make it hard to put down.” (Booklist (starred review))“[A] funny, moving, and suspenseful tale.” (The Week)“The author’s multifaceted work brings Julia back to life and explores the journey it took to rediscover her narrative. . . . A haunting tale.” (National Examiner)“A fascinating and nuanced account of her ancestral ghost story and her complicated clan.” (BookPage)“A unique collision of family history, Wild West adventure, and ghost story. . . . Perceptive, witty, and engaging.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“Fascinating and frequently surprising. Ultimately, American Ghost is a reflection on how the unresolved questions in our own histories can be even more haunting than ghosts.” (Shelf Awareness)“Tenaciously researched and beautifully written, American Ghost gives flesh to a lost story, exhumes a bygone world, and animates the ways in which the past haunts all of us. Hannah Nordhaus has performed a lyrical feat of dead-raising.” (Benjamin Wallace, author of The Billionaire's Vinegar)“Beautifully written and self-aware, a memoir that tells a story and searches for broader lessons. . . . Ultimately, American Ghost is not just the story of a haunting, but a story that will haunt its readers.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)“A thoughtful and intriguing chronicle of familial investigation.” (Kirkus Reviews)“American Ghost is at once an engrossing portrait of a forgotten female pioneer and a fascinating meditation on the fine line between history and lore. Hannah Nordhaus has crafted a seamless blend of gripping mystery, moving family confessional, and chilling ghost story.” (Karen Abbott, New York Times bestselling author of Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy)“Here is a very different sort of a Western, a deeply feminine story with a strong whiff of the paranormal--Willa Cather meets Stephen King. From the Back Cover

Unfinished business, that’s what.”That’s a Salman Rushdie line (from "The Satanic Verses") but it’s a perfect description of what Hannah Norhaus sets out to do with American Ghost—chase down some unfinished business. In this case, the ghost is from her own past—a great-great-grandmother whose life and death deserved, well, fleshing-out.The woman was Julia Schuster Staab. Her life began in Germany. It ended half way around the world, as the lonely and disheartened wife of a Jewish dry goods merchant, in New Mexico.Julia Schuster Staab’s life (1844-1896) forms the heart of "American Ghost." So does Julia’s ghost—a ghost first seen by a janitor at La Posada (“place of rest,” not hardly) in the 1970s. Other odd occurrences, straight out of heebie jeebie land, soon followed.Even without the added wrinkle of the (possibly) paranormal mixed in, the story of Julia Schuster Staab would have been ample on its own for a fascinating account of Santa Fe and settling the Southwestern frontier in the second half of the 19th Century. Julia’s husband Abraham amassed the largest fortune in Santa Fe and was an active civic leader so we see Santa Fe take root out on the western fringes of the “prairie ocean.” Some of the tales here about the multi-cultural aspects of Santa Fe’s early days, particularly that a Jew played a role in helping Archbishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy (yes, the Death Comes to the Archbishop guy) with his cathedral construction, are fascinating. The ghost question—and our collective beliefs about the spirits and apparitions—add another layer of intrigue to this brilliant book.Nordhaus, in fact, had a longtime fixation with the ghost in her family’s past. “I gravitated to her story simply because it was such a good one,” she writes. “A child who loved stories, I could now claim my own piece of the past: a mail-order German bride dragged west, married badly, driven insane and trapped forever as a ghost in her unhappy ending.”After college, in fact, Nordhaus moved to Santa Fe and read extensively about the lives of women on the frontier. She later wrote her first published article about Julia. It was “heavy on self-dramatization and feminist surmise,” she notes in one of many self-deprecating lines. At the time, she was certain that Julia was a victim “and that this victimhood lay behind her ghost.” Nordhaus concedes that Julia “was the specter of my twentysomething angst.”Twenty years later, she came across a document that reignited her interest in the story—and would perhaps give her a chance to recalibrate her opinions of Julia’s life. The document, a family history written by a great aunt, Lizzie, in 1980, “was a tale of a family ecosystem deeply out of balance—forbidden love, inheritance and disinheritance, anger and madness. There were drug addictions, lawsuits, brother against brother, madhouses, penury and suicides. There were fatal wounds to the ‘bosom.’ There were Julia’s children; their story branched from hers. And it was clear to me, from Lizzie’s book, that the family was haunted well before Julia became a ghost. I wondered what had gone so wrong.”Unfinished business.Nordhaus traces threads wherever she can find them and what unfolds is a fascinating portrait of a stranger in a strange, barren land. "American Ghost" follows the history of Julia’s life, including her roots in Germany and life in the booming outpost of Santa Fe. The threads lead her back to Europe (how “American”) and Nordhaus’ research and digging in Germany are as colorful and as haunting as anything else in this account. Interspersed with the historical detail are Nordhaus’ takes on modern-day efforts to detect or stay in touch with the spirit world—ghost hunters, psychics, and drugs (medical marijuana). Her account of a ghost tour at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park is hilarious.Nordhaus also spends a night in what was Julia’s room and, even if her scientific, fact-based approach to reporting, recounts a chilling moment but offers no conclusion. “Ghosts are not innocent until proven guilty,” writes Nordhaus. “They are always guilty: present until proven absent. Absence of evidence, as they so often say in the world of the paranormal, is not evidence of absence. We so badly want the dead to stay with us.”As she notes, ghost hunting and ancestor hunting are kin. “They both involve sifting through heaps of supposition, extrapolation, and unmoored clues interspersed with brief, infinitesimal wisps of evidence.”The wisps come together. As both a human being and as a lingering spirit, Julia left a powerful story that comes into sharp focus in "American Ghost." In the hands of Hannah Nordhaus, the resulting narrative is indelible.

A HISTORICAL ROMP AND MOVING PERSONAL HISTORY By Lisa Jones spoiler alert! - AMERICAN GHOST is a memoir, a ghost-story, a romp through the history of frontier Santa Fe. It starts out as a titillating giggle of a book — the author’s great-great grandmother Julia lives in a hotel in Santa Fe? And is a GHOST!? — yet AMERICAN GHOST takes us deep into the frailty of the human heart, and the family ties that bind us all. Hannah’s a skeptic with a sense of humor. She does a great job with her family history, helped by a fascinating set of forbears — German Jews who migrated to New Mexico in the 1800s to make a fortune as merchants, along the way posing for formal photographs of themselves with Kiowa Indians in full regalia, having their stagecoaches threatened by Billy the Kid, and being protected from same by a nun named Sister Blandina. Oh, and then there’s the Archbishop Lamy — later immortalized in DEATH COMES FOR THE ARCHBISHOP by Willa Cather. The Bishop was a close friend of Hannah’s forbears, most notably with the book’s main character, Hanna’s great great grandmother Julia, with whom he would linger in the garden, speaking French, and grafting European fruit trees. This all sounds like a blast. But Julia is frail, and the Santa Fe of the 1860s was a far cry from the artistic mecca it is today. Julia was unhappy, and became more so as the years wore on. She loses her 8th baby three weeks after she is born, and a subsequent restorative trip to Europe goes terribly wrong when she suffers a mysterious accident. Back in Santa Fe, she becomes a recluse in her room. She dies — no one knows exactly how — at age 52. But she doesn’t go away. As the family home changes hands and morphs into what it is today — La Posada — a luxury hotel — She appears as a cold breeze, as dancing lights, as the outline of a white haired woman in Victorian dress. She’s very very sad. This is the story Hannah has brought to life. It took her to a number of psychics, and ghost hunters. It took her to archives, to relatives she never knew she had, to long buried family diaries. It even takes her back to Germany, to the village from which Julia and her husband Abraham hailed, as well as to the concentration camp Julia’s sister Emilie was taken to at age 80, where she died. The book has won critical praise, and there are inklings from psychics that it has also earned the gratitude of her dead great great grandmother, and given her peace.  It also left its author with a greater understanding of the humanity of her family and the vulnerability of the human heart.

The questions is; does her spirit still inhabit the house that her husband built for her almost a century and a half ago. Hanna Nordhaus explores this question from every angle, traveling to the southwestern United States, Europe, and many places in between, retracing the footsteps of her great-great-great-grandmother Julia - the woman said to haunt the old family Santa Fe mansion. The story was interesting as a history, and I was especially engaged when the author told of her encounters with mediums, spiritualists, and ghost hunters - some of who seemed fairly on target and others who were clearly way off base.Sometimes the story dragged on a little in its exploration and seemed to deviate off track, but when exploring something nebulous like a legendary haunting, I guess the author was justified in wandering a little. I recommend this book for people who like reading about interesting family histories - of a resilient, driven, prosperous (and possibly tyrannical) man, and a wife who, after being taken out of her element succumbs to the stress, the strain of loss and loneliness, and pioneer life to which she was ill suited.

This book has been written for three purposes. First, to provide the Orthodox reader with a competent overview of the history of Protestantism and its major traditions, from its beginnings in the 16th century to the present day. This overview relies heavily upon the Reformer s own words as well as the creeds of various Protestant faiths, in order to avoid misrepresentation and caricature. Second, to acquaint Orthodox and non-Orthodox readers with a narrative of the historical relations between the Orthodox East and the Protestant West. Finally, to provide a summary of Ortho- dox theological opinion on the tenets of Protestantism.

Rock and Sand, by Archpriest Josiah Trenham

Review The saying that schism breeds schism continues to create an ever expanding corpus of churches, all birthed at the time of the Protestant Reformation, which have their roots in the teachings of various reformers of Christianity. In the pages of this book an informed scholar/pastor has made the complexities of these 16th century creators of new doctrines understandable to those readers who were formed in these traditions and those who, being Orthodox Christians, have no previous exposure to them. This book is a great resource for parish priests and students of missiology. --Rev. Dr. Chad Hatfield, Chancellor, St. Vladimir s Seminary, New YorkRock and Sand is a critique of the major Protestant denominations written by The Very Rev. Josiah Trenham, Ph.D. In this work, Fr. Josiah presents historical background on each of the various denominations, their specific theological tenets, their opposition to the teachings of the Holy Fathers and the Tradition of the undivided Christian Church, and the author s refutation thereof according to Holy Orthodoxy. Father Josiah is a serious scholar; his well-documented research confirms this. He is also an incredible pastor; his presentation is oriented toward and well-suited for the parish setting. This book will be of great value to clergy in their preparation of catechumens from Protestant backgrounds. It will also be of great assistance to our laypeople, helping them to understand their own Tradition and enabling them to defend the Orthodox Faith in response to the teachings of the various Reformers. --Rt. Rev. MICHAEL (Duhalich), Ph.D. Bishop of New York and the Diocese of New York and New Jersey

Extremely useful for Orthodox Christians, worthwhile reading for Protestants By John In "Rock and Sand," Father Josiah gives an in-depth, yet extremely readable, review of the historical and theological backgrounds of Protestant traditions. He provides an impressive and well-cited book examining the foundations for the beliefs held by millions of people. More importantly, however, "Rock and Sand" is a useful tool for Orthodox Christians to critically engage with those who, unfortunately, have separated from the Apostolic Church. As an Orthodox college student, I admire my Protestant brothers and sisters for their virtue and dedication to their faith. However, their theology and liturgical innovations require a critical and thorough review. Father Josiah provides just that; and I strongly recommend this book.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Rock and Sand is a very good start on what I hope are more books to ... By Orthodoxia Rock and Sand: An Orthodox Appraisal of the Protestant Reformers and Their Teaching, by Fr. Josiah Trenham is a very good start on what I hope are more books to come in this same vein. Rock and Sand is in many ways very insightful and helpful. I write this review as a former Protestant and agree with the substance of Fr. Josiah's appraisal of the Reformers and Protestant tradition as a whole. The Reformation movement and its Churches, and their petulant offspring, remain today, as then, ultimately, as to their theological claims, incoherent and self defeating. As to their claim to the Apostolic inheritance, illegitimate.First of all Fr. Josiah is a very good writer. The narrative recap of each of the major Protestant Reformers was nicely written in my opinion. That takes up roughly ¾ of the book. He weaves in critique here and there in the historical narrative, showing the inconsistencies and quite honestly, hypocrisies of the Reformers, despite their best intentions. It strikes me that in each case the Reformer ended up as his own 'Pope' wielding authority and making decisions just as grave as the Pope whom they condemned. But that is what happens when love for the Body of Christ is not really guiding actions and the dialectic of action/reaction is. Protestants can say "the truth was at stake" as much as they want, but St Paul subsumes 'truth' within the fold of love when he says 'love rejoices in the truth'. Truth is important, but only as a scalpel in the hand of love. As I have heard it said, "Love without truth is seduction. Truth without love is destructive." The Reformers fell to what we all at times fall to: a faultfinding spirit - with its concomitant sin: self love, vainglory and pride. It is a particularly devastating cycle to get into which reflects the Lord's admonition "judge not lest you be judged. For as you pass judgment so that same judgment will be passed to you." And so the Reformers, thinking they were reforming the church rather deeply disfigured it blinded by a faultfinding spirit and blindness with regard to their own sins. Instead of teaching the world how to love by laying down their lives in the manner of our Lord, and of his Apostles, they thought, as many of us think, even in the Orthodox Church, "we can do it better". Ahhh. But that is surely foolishness. That is simply a rationalization to avoid laying our lives down by taking up the cross of our Lord and Master Teacher Jesus. We claim to be disciples = learners, of Him, of "the Way". Behold the fruit of self love, pride and vainglory. When will we ever learn?Fr. Trenham notes the many inconsistencies. I fleshed one of them out (above). His critiques are peppered throughout the narrative shedding some light that perhaps many of us who have been traditioned in Protestant communities have failed to see. It is difficult to watch the reality of the situation unfold and especially difficult to take in the indisputable facts: the Reformers are, in reality, acting with no less presumption in their shepherding of their 'flocks' than the Pope whom they despise. What in fact they did was to 'cut off their nose to spite their face' and 'cut out their legs from under themselves'. There were errors in the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church, but instead of laboring in love for their correction, the Reformers became of the mind that they could 'do it better.' Rock and Sand shows without a doubt just how wrong they were - and the Western world has lived with the fallout ever since. The Reformation, despite all the protestations of Protestants, is quite clearly a repudiation of our Lord's prayer and desire that we might all "One" as he is in the Father, and the Father is in him, as he and the Father are One - with the result that, as Jesus prays, "the world may believe that you have sent me". O the ingenuity of self love and pride masquerading as a servant to help God get things done. But as Samuel said to King Saul, "To obey is better than sacrifice." A directive that I find rather as difficult at times as the Reformers apparently did.The last ' of the book consists of an appraisal of Protestant doctrine. For the most part I thought it was well done. I found the section on the filioque the most unsatisfying. I felt he should have brought the Scriptures to his aid, which he didn't. That left me puzzled a bit. The most clear affirmation of the procession of the Spirit from the Father alone is John 15:26 "But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father . . ." Fr. Trenham mainly marshals doctrinal arguments from tradition and the writing of St. Photius. While I don't disagree with what Fr. Trenham wrote, it would have more gravitas, in my opinion, if the arguments made were rooted in Scripture as well. His critique of the Protestant doctrine of the many 'Sola' slogans of the Reformers and particularly of 'Sola Scriptura' is quite good. He points out the utter irony of claiming that Scripture alone solves the problem of error - for them particularly the errors they saw in the Roman Catholic Church, while at the same time actually CHANGING what the Scripture says in order to conform to their own prejudices: 'Sola Fides' (by faith alone) being an example. Fr. Josiah rightly shows that one cannot prove FROM SCRIPTURE the doctrine of 'sola Scriptura'. Scripture is the core and touchstone of what the Orthodox call 'Holy Tradition'. And 'Holy Tradition' is the environment, or the ethos, if you will, the phronema - mindset/perspective - that enlightens us to interpret the Scripture rightly. One only experiences Holy Tradition in the Church of Jesus Christ and his Apostles, and one can only interpret the Scripture faithfully from within the One Catholic and Apostolic Church. This is easily understandable if one simply looks at their own family culture, or ethos and use of language, manner of expressing their view of themselves and the world around. If your family left a text full of your families peculiar rules and traditions, it is very likely that many of them would not be understandable by those on the outside of your family, some even if you tried to explain your families customs and traditions. Sometimes the only way to understand is by living them oneself.A few times I felt a few statements had a tinge of triumphalist sentiment. Perhaps some would disagree. I can only say how a few passages came off to me. It seems to me that so often we, the Orthodox, have such confidence of our truthfulness in contrast to others that we slip into a rather boasting posture. I find this so saddening its hard to put in words. That we know the truth certainly has nothing to do with us, our intelligence, or our worthiness, and everything to do with the kindness and mercy of God. Having said that, I wouldn't say that is the general tenor of the book. Not at all.I was very grateful that Fr. Trenham dedicated a whole chapter to the "Orthodox appreciation of Protestant Virtues". In the chapter he very graciously and generously affirmed their "high value of the text of Scripture", their "zeal for missionary work", their "deep and costly commitment to Christian education" and their "aggressive commitment to cultural engagement with Christian values". I agree with him on every point. I've experienced each of these personally. I find that Protestants generally take Jesus' words to be salt and light in their world much more seriously. Too often we seek to push 'Orthodoxy' on others. It seems to me that we should be sharing the love of Christ with others without shame as Saint Paul wrote, "I preach Christ and him crucified" with hearts full of the love of Christ. As St. Paul testified of his own motive for action - "the love of Christ constrains me". How many of us can say that in our interaction with those who are our neighbors and friends outside of the Apostolic inheritance of the Faith, that we are "constrained" by "the love of Christ" to serve them and minister to them the healing presence of Christ, the meek and lowly One?I found the 4 appendices very helpful for understanding how the Orthodox have responded to Protestants in previous interactions. Fr. Josiah occasionally touched on this in his narrative as well.In conclusion I found myself very encouraged and enlightened. I very much enjoyed Rock and Sand. I think everyone would benefit from reading the narrative on the Reformers. Some might find the sections on doctrinal critique a bit hard going if they are unfamiliar with the more intimate details of Orthodox doctrine. Thank you Fr. Josiah for your labor in bringing this book to print. I hope it will inspire more works in the same vein so that more might come into the fold of the Church of Christ which is "the Pillar and ground of the Truth" - the "truth as it is in Jesus" - who find themselves "blown to and fro by every wind of doctrine". May the Lord grant us all his peace.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Colorful, thorough Orthodox appraisal of the Reformation By Amazon Customer In examining the nature of the Protestant Reformation, and the lives of the Reformers, and evaluating it all from an Orthodox perspective, Fr. Josiah provides a most crucial text for converts, inquirers, catechumens, and protestants.Refreshingly, this text doesn't make a pretense of some supposed academic 'neutrality', but lays all the cards on the table. Where the Reformers and their churches took a turn for the better -- rejecting various medieval papal innovations, for instance -- they are praised, and where they erred and departed from the common apostolic, orthodox deposit of faith, they are chastened. Though much of the text simply relays the historical development that gave rise to the various movements and churches, as well as the personalities of the Reformers. One aspect of the book I found particularly exhilarating were in some of its critiques of the Reformation that are often ignored or under-emphasized. For instance, Fr. Josiah's taking to task Luther for his staunch anti-monasticism and degrading of the celibate life, along with his promotion of marriage to an extent out of accord with traditional Christianity, is fascinating. Here we see the Reformers rejecting, not a papal innovation, but universal Christianity which has an explicit Scriptural basis. Not only that, but we see how this aspect of the Reformation has borne bad fruit in modern Protestantism, which has no monasticism or expressly celibate vocation. This is in addition to more traditional critiques of Protestantism, but those also find unapologetic, straightforward, and clear presentation that is rather rare in our more politically correct, diverse modern context. Some of the most interesting and memorable material appears in small asides or footnotes. These divergences pepper the book with flavor and keep the historical main thrust from becoming too dry.Highly recommended reading for Orthodox (especially in America or traditionally Protestant lands), and Protestants looking to better understand themselves.
