Are you missing out on one of the most transforming means to a deeper and more vibrant faith? In Soul Friends, Dr. Leslie Parrott explores the intimate stages of a woman's spiritual journey while showing you how soul friendships can deepen and enlarge your faith.
God brings us soul-friends to help in our spiritual journey, sometimes in predictable places: small groups, friendships, and mentors. But they’re sometimes found in places we don’t expect―these “hidden guides” are people, past or present, whose role in our life may even be hidden from them, but nevertheless, have a deep impact on our growth and vitality. Whether it’s a hidden guide, a member of a small group, or a friend we’ve had for years, these soul-friends all hold the potential to embody grace that enables us to take a next step in the unfolding journey of our faith.
Leslie reveals how every woman traverses four stages of spiritual growth―quest, calling, crisis, and communion – again and again. And whatever stage you find yourself traveling right now, you need soul friends to help you move forward
When we seize the initiative to connect, together we will form a part of the deep communion that is the sisterhood of the traveling saints, journeying together in our desire to know God, serve him, and love him more deeply. Through story, poem, and reflection, Leslie Parrott reminds each of us of the incredibly intimate, intricate, faith-forming work God does in us through the gift of the women he places in our lives.

Love the topic, but it lacks substance By Holly Brown I deeply value friendships that are authentic, deep and encourage spiritual growth with accountability and prayer. These types of friendships are ones that are uplifting in the weary parts of my days, they are life-giving instead of life-draining.That’s why I was excited to receive a copy of Soul Friends by Leslie Parrot. She wrote books like Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts, Love Talk, God Made You Nose to Toes, The Good Fight, and You Matter More than you Think, among others. She and her husband, Les, have been a voice in the Christian marriage health topic for years.I was anticipating a deep book – with deep thoughts and challenges – about the glory of friendships who spur women into greater understanding of God and how He works in community among friends. Therefore, I was a bit disappointed when I started reading the book and found that it read like disjointed blog posts smashed together in a book. Most of the chapters were light-hearted and “fluffy” (for lack of a better word) with words that are not natural toward deep thinking, like “Quest” in place of “purpose”. It seems like the author is trying too hard to think of creative ways to communicate which makes it distracting or confusing from whatever message she is actually trying to convey. At the end of each chapter is a section called “Soul Souvenirs” which consists of a couple of questions meant to provoke thoughtfulness and reflection from the material. Some were good questions, while others seemed frivolous. In fact, I never did finish the book. I simply wanted a book with substance – the “meat and potatoes” of exhortation for vulnerability and spiritual sharpening – and this book lacked substance. I would put this book in the same class as many light devotionals that are out there. While it’s not my preferred flavor of reading, it’s probably somebody’s.Disclosure: I received this book for free from BookLook Bloggers in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

The Value of "Soul Friends" By Mary Lou's Reviews Leslie Parrott writes "Soul Friends" to deepen women’s walk with God through soul friends: “You have been invited into deep-spirited, soul-altering friendship, into a community with the sisterhood of traveling saints walking the Jesus journey all around you…walking each other Home” (p. 221, 220). She describes that journey in terms of: Quest (“to taste all that life has to offer of love, friendship, meaning and adventure”), Calling (“toward a cause of action that will embody God’s presence and fulfill his purpose in the world”), Crisis (“when events unfold within us or around us and leave us hanging on to nothing more than faith, hope and love—and sometimes even those very foundations of our spirit slip away”), and Communion (“in shared spiritual and emotional connection”) ( Dr. Leslie Parrott, "Soul Friends," Zondervan, 2014, pp. 19, 61, 107, 162).Parrott writes in a coffee-klatch, personal, highly emotional, analogy-laden style designed to connect with women. The struggles and daily life experiences she shares (her own and others) are honest, and evoke empathy. And the life principles behind Soul Friends’ relationships will help people in their journey. In her chapter, “Empty Pockets” for example, she starts off with the story of emptying her son’s jeans pockets before laundry, relates that to the pockets of our hearts that we need to turn inside out and present to God, and then to the biblical story: “Hanna’s empty pocket prayer” (p. 211). People can track with that kind of progression. But the depth of content gets overridden by the endless succession of analogies, and the emotional way people’s life situations are approached. Although she uses insights from devotional giants, and one reference to brain science, the book lacks the intellectual depth and challenge that many women are capable of, and thus reinforces the stereotype of women as emotional creatures. Her target audience seems to be women who are trying to live out their faith personally and legitimately, but are living in an American middle class bubble, lacking global and probing intellectual relevance.I received this book free of charge from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review.

I was expecting a how-to manual of sorts on how to make deep, intimate friendships with other Christians that help support and grow our relationship with Christ. This book instead was 34 short devotion-like stories.I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of these kinds of devotions typically, but because I've enjoyed other work by Dr. Parrott, I gave this book a fair chance. My main problem with this book was the misleading title. While this definitely was a devotion book about, "what every woman needs to grow in her faith," it didn't focus on friendships or relationships really at all. There were four main parts to this book: quest, crisis, calling, and communion. This book was more a collection of individual stories about growth in each of these areas. While I will say I am not a fan of this genre of devotionals, the stories Dr. Parrott gives were of the quality that I have experienced in her other non-devotional books. They were very helpful, had meaning and were written well. There were two questions at the end of each of the 34 vignettes to help the reader tie things together and reflect on what they just read. Many of these questions were excellent, but a few were a little impractical for me personally. One was along the lines of, "when was a time someone gave up a dream for you?" I don't think anyone has ever done that for me and I couldn't think of many examples in other's lives that would apply to that question either. If you are looking for a light-hearted 34 day devotional that may encourage you to reflect on some of the spiritual growth you have experienced in your life, this would be a great choice. It would be a nice book to take on vacation when you want to spend some time in reflection. As a book, though, about how to grow in your faith, there are better out there that speak specifically to that point.I was provided this book free of charge from Zondervan in return for my honest review.
