Einstein's Beach House: Stories, by Jacob M. Appel

Review "Jacob Appel captures New York City and its satellites around the turn of the millennium with painful, entertaining accuracy. Lives are coming apart, and coming together, in stories that live with you long after you've read them. Comparisons to Cheever, Trevor, and especially Chekhov can't be helped, but Appel writes with a grace and humor all his own." - Dan O'Brien, author of War Reporter and The Body of an American"Jacob Appel is licensed to give sightseeing tours, and reading Einstein's Beach House certainly cements his qualifications. A capacious curiosity is at work here: Appel's stories move with thirstful purpose, rarely slowing, filled with wry humor and bon mots as we proceed briskly down his fictional paths, invited to examine modern ethical issues along the way. Take this tour--you'll want to give a tip once you reach the end." - Matthew Pitt, author of Attention Please Now"A failed professional ventriloquist, a possibly morose hedgehog and a particularly acute array of parents and their children populate Jacob Appel's impossibly keen Einstein's Beach House -- a collection that takes a sharp look at the moments when we, whether child or adult, see who we truly are and the inevitability of who we will become. Appel's achy, skewed, sometimes heart-breaky world is dense with truth and humor -- the stuff of great literature." - Allison Lynn, author of The Exiles and Now You See It"Sharp, observant, darkly funny and deeply humane." - Kirkus

His vast, growing and eclectic body of work had yielded this collection of moving, witty and quirky stories. Each one a gem - and each so different from the last. There is something for everyone in here. I highly recommend it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A must read collection of short stories By L. Ruetz Do you know who you are? Did you have insights as a child that you might be on the right, or the wrong path but pushed them aside or did wisdom come as it often does, in hindsight? At what point do you, flaws and all, accept your own reality and just accept what is? Can truth be discovered through deception? It might be hard to get the answers to the above in a single novel but Jacob Appel manages to do all that in eight short stories that perfectly capture the best and worst of the human condition in a way that is relevant, straight forward, engaging, honest and at times, funny. This book is made up of eight stories with eight very different central characters - this is not your normal grouping of stories - you get a depressed hedgehog, a custody battle over a tortoise, a woman who banishes her daughter's imaginary friend only to have a man claiming to be the imaginary friend's father show up (this is my favorite story), a beach house with a made up historical connection, only to have everything turned upside down as reality is put into question and more.In each story the author is able to adapt the writing style and voice appropriately. Sometimes writers have a single style that they use for all characters, but that is not the case here. The vocabulary is richly developed as are the insights into the human condition and way of thinking. The author had this same intense vocabulary in the Biology of Luck, with rich imagery that invokes an instant picture in your mind and that holds true for this book as well. He is certainly an author to keep an eye on.My only complaint is that the book feels far too short and I wanted more.I received a copy of the book for free in exchange for an honest review.

9 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely amazing, and from a reviewer who typically always has something to complain about. By The Barefoot Reviewer As is very often always the case, I received this book free in exchange for a review. Despite the kindness of receiving a free book I'm absolutely candid about the book because I want everyone to know what they're getting as much as I hope to when I'm shopping.Usually when I'm about to review something I go into a prototypical summary/positives/negatives format but in this case I can't really find anything negative to say so I'm stymied for the last third of the review. This is a keen rarity, as my fiancee will vociferously attest, so it means you should pay heed to what I'm about to say.As you might have read in the summary, this is, of course, a short story collection. Each story is very brief and concise making it easily consumed textually but of complex enough content that you can chew on it for hours afterwards. This is the sort of text that on one hand I yearn to pass on to other readers so that they can have a stab at it but at the same time regret letting go of because I know that the contents will haunt my recollections for years to come.Appel touches profoundly on the topics he seeks to address. What is our relationship with animals and with each other? What does it mean to really own a piece of property? How meaningful is the past and what bearing should that have on our future? Appel's very quick vignettes are windows into the human condition and provoke a world of thought and analysis that surpasses their brevity. It has been a long time since so few pages have made such an impression on this seasoned reader. In summary, this is one of the supreme victories of the genre. Not only is it entertaining but also thought provoking in a way that most books simply and completely are not. Exceptional, and this is from one who regularly and cruelly immolates authors in the fires of heartless criticism.

Simple Truths to Find Love, Enjoyment, Trust, and Peace with God

What is life? What are we here for? What is truly important? What will bring authentic satisfaction and lasting happiness? We all ask these questions, and we all have a right to come to our own conclusions.

In this follow-up to his New York Times and USA Today bestseller Jesus Is ____, Judah completes this sentence as to what “life is,” revealing how it is to be loved and to love, to enjoy God to the fullest, to trust God in every moment, and to be at peace with God, others, and ourselves. Judah writes as a friend, welcoming to the discussion new believers, lifelong followers of Jesus, and even the merely curious.

In Life Is _____, Judah shows us the irrational love of God and the life that he intends for us to have in the here and now. With excitement and humor, he looks at the stories in the Bible from a different angle and shows how life is all about loving God and loving others.

This study guide with DVD includes a DVD with six sessions from Judah Smith and a study guide with leader helps, discussion questions, conversation starters, and between-session activities to enhance application of Judah’s teaching.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Wonderful Series! By Joshua Olds If I didn’t know better, I would say that Judah Smith and the Thomas Nelson team read my review of Jesus Is________. In that review, I took the small group series to task for a number of things and I am very pleased to note that almost every criticism that I had was directly addressed. It’s astounding, really.I very nearly passed on even viewing this series. I had received both from the publisher (thanks Thomas Nelson!) and after Jesus Is_____, just wasn’t going to give my time for more of the same in Life Is_______. I’m so glad I did. It’s an astounding series that kept me captivated from beginning to end. That’s not hyperbole. I put in the first disc not knowing what to expect. Two hours later, I’m still in front of the computer taking notes. First thing: the video lessons are a respectable length, clocking in at about 20 minutes each. That’s long enough to give some substance. Also gone is the stylistic artsy shots in favor of a just as well-designed group setting. It’s Judah, a handful of people, and he just preaches. Man, if the guy preaches like this all the time, I see why people listen. Now true, he’s still got some of the issues of pandering to pop culture, but in this case he comes off more genuine and less parody of himself. As a pastor, I’ll be honest, it’s hard to keep me focused on someone else’s sermon. It just is. I start thinking about how I’d preach it, how I’d do it different, so some point that I would’ve used or not used. Judah put me right in the groove of worship. And it was awesome. The six lessons roughly correlate to the book’s four primary headings, which is the answer to my second major criticism of his previous work. The lessons are: Life is to be loved by God. Life is to love others. Life is to trust God. Life is to be at peace with God. Life is to be at peace with yourself. Life is to enjoy God.Frankly, anything I say will not do it justice. Just get it and listen for yourself. The study guide is meatier and better structured, though it still lacks pre-video questions or activity/object lesson ideas. I was very glad that they kept the daily readings/devotional for the between days. As a leader, I’d probably still use and adapt some of that material to the small group, but now I’d do it just to encourage people to engage with the material rather than feeling like I needed to in order to provide a substantive lesson.Overall, the two series are like night and day. Smith and his team took things back to the drawing board and they created a masterpiece.

I would recommend the study guide and DVD to get the most out of the study... but you can get a lot out of just reading the book too. Both are easy reads and fun... they keep your attention.

Leadership From Behind the Scenes, by Dr. Ron webb

Review "Leadership from Behind the Scenes removes the mask of ministry and looks beneath to expose the strategies of the enemy. In this book, Bishop Webb will take you behind the red curtain and deal with issues previously undiscussed in Christian literature; such as depression in ministry, divorce, betrayal, and the weight of leadership. You will walk with him through the proper process for dealing with these issues. Through Biblical example, and his own experience, Bishop Webb shares the keys and tools needed to become a successful and powerful leader for God." --Paula White, Senior Pastor, New Destiny Christian Center, Apopka, Florida"A successful pastor and leader of a fellowship of pastors, Bishop Webb has earned the right, through much experience, to write and speak to leaders throughout the world. I highly recommend this book to church leaders and those who are led." --Bishop Charles Rodgers, Memphis, Tennessee

Best Ebook Enter Mo Pai: The Ancient Training of the Immortals, by Mr James Van Gelder

This book is for the seekers. It is for those who have a true interest in uncovering the mysteries surrounding the mechanics behind the ancient training of Mo Pai.

From the Back Cover

Enter Mo Pai: The Ancient Training of the Immortals dives into the world of Mo Pai, a legendary internal cultivation system that has been secretly handed down by successions of meditation masters for well over 2,000 years. The path of Mo Pai develops the practitioner in the present life, but also ascends the practitioner in status with regards to the afterlife. In the present life, the goal of Mo Pai is to develop supernatural abilities capable of aiding an individual both in self-defense and in the rejuvenation of the physical body. Concerning the afterlife, the true master of Mo Pai reserves the ability to consciously navigate their soul after the death of the physical body, freeing themselves from the continuous cycle of death and rebirth.

The greatest Mo Pai practitioner on Earth today, Master John Chang, has publicly displayed his extraordinary developments to the world by performing many spectacular abilities on video such as electrokinesis, pyrokinesis, levitation, suspended animation, and telekinesis.

In order to attain supernatural capacities, this ancient training augments the innate potential of the human body through gathering and harnessing the two fundamental life-force energies known as Yin Chi and Yang Chi. These two energies are abundant in nature and play an important role in sustaining the human body. Developing these vital energies to levels that many would consider unnatural, the Mo Pai student quickly gains an edge when compared to the average human.

Included in this book is an analysis of the Mo Pai training and the techniques used for gathering, manipulating, and finally combining the two fundamental vital energies of Yang Chi and Yin Chi.

About the Author

JAMES VAN GELDER has studied energy cultivation from various avenues including Western Hermetics, Daoist Energy Cultivation/Nei Gong, Tibetan Buddhist Alchemy, and the systems of Indian Kundalini Yoga.

Foreword

Derrick Arnold: Internal martial arts instructor, herbalist, academic, and author. Editions printed before 11/07/15 will not have the foreword included.

Editorial Reviews

“Well researched training manual that references a variety of Mo Pai masters, with visuals and quotes. It is a great tool for any student looking to embrace the practice of Mo Pai. Van Gelder introduces four levels in depth, and describes briefly, the other 72 levels, so that one will know the challenges and advantages of Mo Pai. Follow the steps closely, and one will truly achieve a degree of Mo Pai mastery.” (Julie Moree's News Watch, March 2015)

“I thoroughly enjoyed this read! Ancient wisdom is timeless. It teaches us what we are reawakening to as a society; we are spiritual beings and once we realize that our existence far exceeds the confines of the physical, our potential and our power can be limitless. The author does a great job of summarizing the experiences of Jim McMillan and John Chang. This book can serve as the perfect companion piece to these readings outlined in this work. For those who are complete novices, the book can also be a great introduction because it outlines these practices in a way that is easily accessible to a wide audience. Enter Mo Pai does an excellent job highlighting the levels that will lead one to immortality. There are concepts present that defy physical explanation that are introduced. These ancient concepts are interesting, intriguing and challenge the modern day perception of reality.” (Tiffany Newborn MBA, Author of The Staff of Tzaddi, May 2015)

The man does not know the teachings from the first hands. He even did not meet any of the living masters of Mo Pai. Well, and he could not, considering that the Indonesian Master does not teach westerners any longer. This is just a compilation of ideas and thoughts taken from others' books. Not worth to waist your time on. Read the original sources, find the real masters or drown in your own dreams and vanity.p.s. Since I personally contacted and received some instructions from Jim some time before he passed away I know what I am talking about.

Not the correct training method for Mopai By Charles Huffman After making it no further than the end of the sample of this book, where the author gives what he calls the training method for the first level of Mopai, I was extremely disappointed. The training method he mentions is NOT how one develops the first level of Mopai. I have been fortunate enough to receive this practice from two different teachers, one of whom was Jim McMillan (who actually trained with John Chang). What is in this book is a meditation technique, but it is not what is taught within the Mopai. Very disappointing.

It reminds me of my brother, who went to a kung fu school in China and is now practicing Krav Maga. But Mo Pai also includes an underlying spiritual background, meditation, and a balance in life. It involved the more common discussed “chakras” and other elements that make this unique. The writer explains it really well and there is no mistake as to what it is after your read this book.

“A story about love, marriage, compromise, parenthood and the difference between the life one imagined and reality.”* Fifteen years ago, Krista Bremer, a California-bred feminist, surfer, and aspiring journalist, met Ismail Suayah, sincere, passionate, kind, yet from a very different world. One of eight siblings born in an impoverished fishing village in Libya, Ismail was raised a Muslim--and his faith informed his life. When Krista and Ismail made the decision to become a family, she embarked on a journey she never could have imagined, an accidental jihad: a quest for spiritual and intellectual growth that would open her mind and, more important, her heart. “A bold piece of writing (and thinking) by an incredibly brave woman.”  —Elizabeth Gilbert, author of The Signature of All Things “A moving, lyrical memoir.”—Kirkus Reviews “Candid and rich.” —Good Housekeeping “Unrelenting candor and  gorgeous prose.” —BookPage “Krista Bremer has a very good story.” —The New York Times Book Review “A beautiful account of [Krista’s] jihad, or struggle, to find peace within herself and within her marriage.” —The Kansas City Star “Lucid, heartfelt, and profoundly humane . . . Navigates the boundaries of religion and politics to arrive at the universal experience of love.” —G. Willow Wilson, author of Alif the Unseen “This is a memoir worth reading.” —*Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A Tender Struggle: Story of a Marriage, by Krista Bremer

From Booklist After quitting her So-Cal beach-bum lifestyle to attend graduate school, Bremer found herself pregnant and impulsively married Ismail, an older Libyan man. Basing this book on her Pushcart Prize–winning essay, “My Accidental Jihad,” Bremer details her youthful Barbie-doll dreams of marriage and wealth and the sweetness of their newborn daughter and then bolts to the comparative ickiness of Ramadan. Ismail’s breath smells bad, for one thing, and his fasting makes him too tired to help around the house. Further, he doesn’t quite comprehend American celebrations, such as Easter and Christmas. “It was difficult for him to understand holidays untethered from meaning and drifting in an ocean of desire and delight.” A trip to Libya to meet Ismail’s family is nearly all dismal, with Bremer grousing about how uncomfortable she is. There’s no coffee, nowhere to go running, and so on. The book’s title refers not to her falling in love with a Muslim but her “own accidental jihad, forcing me to wrestle with my intolerance and self-absorption.” Readers with similar mind-sets will want to follow Bremer’s “love story.” --Eloise Kinney

From Kirkus Reviews A moving, lyrical memoir about how an American essayist fell in love with a Libyan-born Muslim man and learned to embrace the life she made with him. Sun associate publisher Bremer was a wayward former California surfer girl just starting to build her life in North Carolina when she met Ismail. He was 15 years older than she and different from her in almost every possible way. Yet his gentle simplicity made her feel as though she could “finally exhale…and [open] up to [herself]” in ways she had not been able to with anyone else. When she unexpectedly became pregnant not long after they met, she faced a difficult choice: terminate the pregnancy and continue her pursuit of a promising career in journalism or keep the baby and accept Ismail’s heartfelt offer of marriage. Unable to resist the mysterious allure of the future she “never intended—or even knew how much [she] wanted,” Bremer chose to “stitch [their] mismatched lives together to make a family.” Among the many challenges she encountered was coming to terms with Ismail’s loving but traditionalist family in Tripoli. To them, she was a woman “weighed down by so much individualism, impatience, and desire.” Yet through her visits with them, she also learned to temper the Western individualism she came to realize had been the source of the “creeping despair that comes from doggedly chasing the elusive dream that women can be everything at once.” As she gradually came to accept a different way of living—and eventually, worshipping—in middle-class America, Bremer grew to appreciate Ismail, her extended family and the struggle they brought into her life more than she even imagined possible. A sweet and rewarding journey of a book.

Beautifully written story of finding yourself through the magnifying glass of a multi-cultural marriage By Janet D I purchased this book because I was inspired to read her heartfelt story about falling in love, building a life, sharing dreams, and raising children with a man from a North African country. I'm married to a Moroccan man who came to America for school and ended up falling in love with me who happens to be southern and very American. There aren't many tales written of how multi-cultural couples end up exploring not only the other culture they married into, but also themselves and ultimately how their children are being raised. This is a coming-into-one's-skin kind of story. Krista Bremer is wonderfully open and honest with herself and how she deals with her frustrations, her challenges, and how she comes full circle to a place of peace and mutual respect. I adored her tales of her visit to Libya with her in-laws and their extended community. Her colorful way of writing puts the reader firmly there, experiencing all of the sights, smells, tastes and bewilderment of finding oneself in a family that you don't share the language of nor the traditions. Krista also paints a peaceful and loving picture of a Muslim family and community. Those glimpses into a world that very few Americans experience are sorely needed today. This is a must-read for all multi-cultural families and those who are connected to them. It's also an enlightening book club read. Lots of topics for passionate discussions!

Author's own "bright illusions of superiority" By Mary Reinert Near the end of this book the author tells of an instance being with a friend who makes what she considers a snide remark about Islam and reminds herself that she too once had a "soothing homogeneity, its bright illusions of superiority.." From my perspective, she still has an illusion of superiority; now however, it's her feeling of heterogeneousness. Although I definitely feel the author loved the man she married, I can't help but sense that it was that "difference" was a lot of the appeal. Even before meeting Ismail, the author relished a non-traditional path: "unshaved legs" and discussions about wearing a tampon on a nude beach. In short, being different from the pack was important and somehow more exhilarating, more interesting, more worthy. The book is definitely well-written and I appreciated the author's clarity, style of writing and wit throughout the book. However, I was disappointed in the subject matter. The daily challenges of marrying someone of a different faith were interesting. The trip to Libya and the meeting of Ismail's family was fascinating. Nevertheless, at times, the book had the tone of a tempest in a teapot; to her credit, she does reflect on her own self-absorption.Finally, I'm not sure I completely understand the title. As a westerner (she never calls herself Christian so not sure) living with a Muslim, she was forced to come to grips with her own intolerance and self-absorption calling that her "accidental jihad". However, the issues seem to be cultural rather than faith driven. She tells of attending church but nothing is said about her own personal faith and how that conflicts or reinforces her marriage or experiences with Islam. Ismail prays regularly, but I believe there is only one reference that she meditates. Religion is only a cultural difference and theology and belief are only important in that they affect culture. The author at one point is very concerned about the number of prayer rugs in the house; the rugs are more important to her than the act of prayer itself as her husband does remind her. The ending of the book just seems hokey; is swaying at a rock concert a religious experience? Was that to be a conversion experience? In short, although a good read, way less than I had expected.

It's a quiet testament to two cultures blending, two lovers finding--and appreciating--each other amidst all of the potential differences they bring. You don't have to be marrying someone from a different culture to appreciate this story--even the smallest family of origin creates a culture of its own. This is about finding a place of your own, as a couple--a huge challenge with an even bigger reward. Beautiful writing--some vivid and memorable scenes--highly recommended.

Poems , by Walt Whitman, by Walt Whitman

About the Author Walt Whitman was an American poet and writer born in New York in 1819. Despite his family s financial troubles, Whitman attended school and, after graduating at age eleven, worked in a lawyer s office before becoming a printer s apprentice. Before he had even turned sixteen Whitman began anonymously publishing his poetry at the Long Island Star, where he worked. After leaving the Star, Whitman moved through several jobs including teaching, publishing and typesetting. Eventually, though, Whitman determined to make his living writing poetry, and paid for the first publication of Leaves of Grass himself when he was thirty-seven. At the time of its publication, Leaves of Grass was met with controversy and was criticized for its overtly sexual themes, however, but it has since come to be one of the most important works in early American literature and a product of the transcendentalist movement. Whitman died in 1892 at the age of seventy-two.

However, I was very disappointed by the lack of formatting and navigation options. The line breaks are practically non-existent, with the exception of punctuation that serves as line breaks (colons and so forth). Furthermore, the table of contents is not linked/click-able. You can't use it to navigate from poem to poem. You will have to use the search function and bookmarks extensively to make your version comfortable to navigate. The collection itself is rather extensive, which is nice.

Loved content, hard to read By Judy K M If you can make your way around by your self, it is great--but the table of contents is difficult and it is hard to flip through and find your well remembered poems. Probably should have bought an annotated version. Will probably buy a paper used version instead.

Pope Francis' Revolution of Tenderness and Love: Theological and Pastoral Perspectives, by Cardinal Walter Kasper

Review 'As Cardinal Kasper makes clear in his short but insightful book, the Pope is completely committed to the Synodical process. Holding a synod in two sessions, a year apart, and encouraging consultation by the bishops of the wider Church really does mark a new development...Kasper also emphasises the importance of 'mercy' in the present Pope's thinking.' -- Paul Richardson, www.churchnewspaper.com

Exciting Wisdom and Balance By denregan As a retired seminary prof with an earned doctorate in theology, I have had the time and interest to read and digest pretty much everything said or written by Pope Francis. Just having finished Kasper's new book on "Pope Francis' Revolution of Tenderness and Love" (and profiting as well from Kasper's fairly recent work on "Mercy"), may I endorse a prior comment (above) on the "accessibility" of the wisdom and theological soundness Kasper has articulated in this new, rather concise, book.. What an immensely valuable contribution to those who may be either "rejoicing in" or "worried by" Pope Francis! Since there is that extensive "comment" above, I can rely on the included "citations" from Francis' own homilies and talks so one can begin to appreciate the balance and depth of his thinking/hopes/goals. I am in awe of both Francis' vision, humility and spirituality, and Kasper's ability (only two years into this Pontificate) to weave together such a tapestry of wisdom and hope. Even on a retirement pension, I have ordered 5 copies for lay or clerical friends so they too can marvel at these two "gifts of the Spirit" who are lighting a fire illuminating Gospel, Church and Hope -- and challenge each of us to find our own way to add something good.

McLain I have just finished reading and digesting as best I can this wonderful new book, "Revolution of Tenderness and Love".It is a fitting and needed addition to the book, "Mercy", both so well written by Cardinal Walter Kasper. I cannot help but believe and see that both of these books have the Holy Spirit written all over them; they represent, A CALL TO ACTION, addressed to all those who will vote with and or those who may be thinking of voting against the inspirational call of His Holiness Pope Francis. It is abundantly clear to me that the continuation of the work of Vatican 2 needs the affirmation and continuation His Holiness Pope Francis is calling for; needed to be the outcome of this Fall's secondand decisive meeting of the worldwide Synod of Bishops. There is so much good compressed into this smaller book that it would take pages on end to cover all that thrilled my soul as I read carefully each and every page with awe and wonder. At the top of page 64 though, is to me, the Heart of it all, "keeping alive in the world the thirst for the Absolute. The Absolute is recognized, even in the secular world, when capitalized as defined in the "unabridged Websters Dictionary of the English Language" Absolute: theindependent, unrestricted, and perfect Being: God. The One God we all seek to know. Praise His Holy Name!True, there is only one God who is God, yet we worship the Trinity, the mystery of Three in One, yet still One; the One God: the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit: the One God who is God. The Great I AM, who when Moses asked by whatname shall I/we call you; He answered, "I AM WHO AM. I AM IS GOD, the WHO AM is the Union of God with man, Jesus, the Christ, the First of many in whose Life we are all called to share Eternally in as new Creation in Christ. theFirst and we in Him the many; the reason we are here on this earth is to complete our Redemption given to us as a gift from the "Faith of Christ" our path to becoming now, in this mortal life, the beginning of full salvation; the gracious Gift of God for all who will open their eyes; open their ears; hear the Word of God, then freely receive all that Goddesires to give to all who will receive by grace this Gift from God; to share freely with our neighbor as well.Somehow by God's grace this has all been given to me, one who was lost, to affirm the call of His Holiness Pope Francis for the purpose of "unity through diversity", the end result of ecumenism. The perfection of "unity through diversity" is the Holy Trinity of the One God who is God. This gracious God is callingus now to also share with all who will this "unity through diversity" Pope Francis, as the Vicar of Christ on earth, aschampioned by Cardinal Walter Kasper in his two wonderful books, "Mercy" and "Revolution of Tenderness andLove", is putting into words that can be understood this calling. Please hear and respond to the call of His HolinessPope Francis; read, see, and understand "the theology of the people" the "unity through diversity". God is calling forinclusiveness, not exclusiveness. "Behold, he is coming... for all eyes to see".

Ervin Cardinal Kasper writes with insight, wisdom and great respect for the current holy father, Francis and of his predecessors. He is educated and knowledgeable. Kasper understands the context and culture of Francis' South American world and ministry - familiar as well with the Aparecido document and St Ignatius of Loyola's thinking with the church. The cardinal is also familiar with the curial world of Rome. He writes with clarity, care and compassion for a church and its shepherd that appear to be moving by the Holy Spirit in a new and refreshed direction.

All her attention was centered on her grandmother Lassiter's house—the house where her mother had been brutally murdered—the house where her father had been arrested as the killer. The house she couldn't remember, even though she had apparently lived here the first seven years of her life. Dark and forbidding, and at least two stories tall, it sat back from the street on a large lot. She hadn't realized the house would be this big—or this intimidating.Lightning flared. A gust of wind rattled the branches overhead like dry bones. She shot a glance upward before giving herself a mental shake. Enough of this. She had to stop being such a coward. It was just a house, the house a grandmother she couldn't remember had left to her.It was hers…and she didn't want it.Didn't want the secrets hiding behind that innocent-looking facade. Secrets better left dormant behind the barrier her mind had erected, protecting her from the horror of that night. She stared up at the rounded turret of the old Queen Anne house. What had really happened here? In spite of her resolve to learn the truth, did she really want to know? Would the knowledge destroy all she wanted to believe about her father? When Grandmother Douglas lay dying she had gasped out "the box." When Macy found the metal box with information about her father's death in prison, there had also been a letter telling her not to come here, that it would be dangerous. But she had come because she needed to know the truth about her family—the truth about what had happened in this house.Lightning flashed again, illuminating the wide porch and the front of the house. Thunder grumbled overhead.Macy climbed the steps and inserted the key her grandmother Lassiter's lawyer had sent her. The door swung open, silent as a shadow. She caught her breath, listening, but the low growl of thunder and the wind whipping the tree limbs were the only sounds. She fumbled for the light switch.A chandelier sprang to life and she had a fleeting impression of a mahogany table, the glint of a gold framed mirror, before a jagged spear of lightning split the sky.Thunder exploded. The lights went out!Darkness closed around her, the silence like a heavy blanket. Macy glanced behind her. The streetlight on the corner shed a circle of dull light, but all the houses in the area were dark. The lightning must have done major damage. She turned back to face the house, fumbling in her pocket for the penlight she carried. Her fingers closed around the smooth cylinder. The tiny light barely dented the darkness. A staircase rose on the left, disappearing into the ebony depths of the upper regions.A door beckoned, and Macy crept toward it. She caught a glimpse of old-fashioned chairs and a fireplace.A slight movement at the window suddenly caught her attention. A pale oval pressed against the glass—someone was peering in.Watching her.Macy whirled, running to the door. She plunged down the porch steps and strode around the house, swinging the penlight from side to side. Right there. That's where the sneak had to have been standing. So where was he now? Then strong arms clamped around her, yanking her back in a tight embrace. Macy dropped the penlight. A scream ripped from her throat as she clawed at the arms encircling her, trying to break loose.Nick Baldwin grunted and caught the intruder's shoulders, swinging the guy around. The stranger's ball cap fell off and long copper-colored hair swung down, swirling in the wind. Nick revised his impression in a hurry. This was no man.It was a woman! A very angry woman determined to break his hold, and he had his hands full trying to stop her."Let go of me." She twisted her body, trying to wrench loose. His grip tightened. "Whoa! Take it easy. I'm not going to hurt you."He propelled her toward the front porch and jerked out his cell phone. "Sit down on that step so I can keep an eye on you."She sat, glaring up at him, and he had the impression she was braced to jump and run. A jagged flash of lightning slashed the sky, followed by a cannon blast of thunder. The storm was moving closer. He ended the call and stood in front of her, firm and unyielding. "You just sit there for a few minutes. I've got someone coming to help straighten this out."She arched an eyebrow. "You can't handle one woman by yourself?"Amused by her question, he chuckled, breaking the tension. There was laughter in his voice when he spoke. "I don't think that's the problem. I'm Nick Baldwin, a police officer here in Walnut Grove. And right now—like it or not—I'm in charge. You just sit there for the time being and we'll try to get everything worked out before the storm hits."A sprinkle of raindrops greeted his words, and the woman glanced at the sky, looking startled. He hoped it wouldn't start pouring, but if it did, they could move to the wide front porch. He stood before her, relaxed, but blocking her from leaving. Nick was aware that with his back to the street his face was hidden in the shadows, so she would have no idea what he looked like. But the dim glow from the streetlight had to show her he was in uniform. A policeman. She stared up at him. "Why were you looking in the window?""I saw a light moving around in the house and then you came barreling out. I've got some questions for you, but they can wait for a few minutes."A police car pulled into the driveway and parked behind her Chevy. Sam Halston got out and left the motor running and the lights on, illuminating the scene."Hey, Nick. What've we got here?"Nick turned to face him. "I saw something like a flashlight in a house that's supposed to be locked and unoccupied, and then she came rushing out the door and down the steps like something was chasing her. Thought it might be a good idea to check her out. I'd be interested in learning how she got inside and what she was doing there."Sam approached. "Okay, let's see what's going on. You got any identification?"The woman switched her attention to him, but she didn't look any friendlier. "It's in the car. If you can call off your watchdog, I'll go get it.""Well, now, I think it might be better if Nick escorted you. We can't take a chance on you hopping in and driving off, now can we?"She didn't answer, but she got to her feet and marched down the drive. Nick followed her, watching as she reached inside the car and retrieved her purse. She took out her driver's license and handed it to him, but he could tell from her expression she was ticked off.He tilted the license to the light, then glanced in her direction. "Macy Douglas. You're not from here, so what are you doing in Opal Lassiter's house?""She was my grandmother."Sam stepped forward. "Let me see that."He took her license from Nick. "So, you're Steve Douglas's daughter. I heard you might be coming to town. How long are you here for?""I have no idea. Does it matter?" A gust of wind lashed the branches of the trees and whipped her long copper-colored hair into her eyes. She sent a quick glance overhead at the approaching storm. He handed back the license. "I'm Sam Halston, chief of police in Walnut Grove."Nick glanced at him through narrowed eyes. So Sam was familiar with her name. And how had he heard she might be coming to town? It was time he took part in the conversation. "We've had a problem with attempted break-ins at this house recently. So far, whoever it was got scared off before getting in, and the neighborhood watch in this area is used to being on guard. They kept an eye on Opal while she lived here.""Are you saying someone reported me when I drove in? How did you get here so fast? I'd only been in the house for a few minutes before you showed up."He could hear the suspicion in her voice. Well, that worked both ways. He was a little suspicious himself and he hadn't learned yet why she was in the house. "I've made a habit of driving by and keeping an eye on things, and it's a small town. It doesn't take long to get to any part of it. But none of this answers the most important question. Why are you here at this time of the night?"She hesitated, and he waited, his eyes holding hers. Finally she sighed and started talking. "This house is a piece of my family history, and I was curious about it. I suppose I could have waited until morning, but I wanted to find it and see what it looked like.""You lived here when you were young," Sam said. "You ought to have some memories of it.""I was seven years old when I left, and no, I don't remember much." She slid her license into her wallet and closed her purse, slinging it over her shoulder. "May I go now?""That depends," Sam said, sounding reluctant. "Where are you going?""To a motel, I guess. If there's one in town that still has lights.""There's a good one on the highway, and the outage is just on this side of town. It'll probably be off for several hours. Nick'll show you how to find the motel, and I want to have a talk with you in the morning."Macy shook her head. "I have a nine o'clock appointment with Raleigh Benson, my grandmother's lawyer.""Make it eight, then. Nick will give you directions." He turned and walked away. A handful of raindrops splattered around them and Nick motioned toward her car."We'd better get. It's going to start pouring in a few minutes. I'm parked just around the corner. Follow me, and I'll show you the way to the motel.""First I have to lock the house."They hurried back to the porch and he waited while she climbed the steps, checked the light switch and locked the door before jogging over to their separate cars.Nick walked around the corner to his car and drove back to the driveway, pulling in front of Macy to lead the way. He watched in his rearview mirror, making sure she followed him. She hadn't been all that cooperative, and he wouldn't put it past her to speed off in the other direction.Of course, the way he'd surprised her might have something to do with how she'd acted. The minute he'd felt the softness of her shoulders, seen the glimmer of that long hair flashing across her face, he knew he'd messed up. Even in the pale glow of the streetlight, that copper-colored hair held a fire of its own. A man could warm his hands by it.Since she was from out of town the possibilities of her being their mystery burglar were practically nonexistent. But why didn't she remember living here? After all, she'd spent a few years in this house. She should remember something. But what was she doing here, alone, at this time of night? Her explanation had been lame, to put it mildly. And what was she doing inside the house?Macy Douglas still had some explaining to do.Macy followed him into the parking lot of a Motel 6, the windshield wipers slapping at a barrage of raindrops. Nick got out and hurried toward her car, shoulders hunched and head ducked against the wind. She rolled down the window and he stuck his head inside, the rain pelting his shoulders. She stared at him, looking startled as their eyes met—and held. His heartbeat kicked up a notch. A reaction he hadn't expected and definitely didn't want. Macy leaned back as if trying to put a little distance between them. Maybe he needed to try that, too. Regardless of how lovely she was, he didn't need any more complications in his life. She seemed almost as surprised as he was. After a split-second hesitation, he said, "You'll be all right here. I'll drop by in the morning and show you the way to the police station. Be ready about seven thirty and we'll pick up a bite to eat first. There's a restaurant in town that puts out a good breakfast.""That will be fine, I guess," she muttered. He nodded and stepped back. "I'll go with you to check in and get your room number."They hurried toward the office, Nick striding along with her. She probably didn't want to check in with a policeman standing beside her. He could understand that. It wasn't the best way to make a good impression. The motel clerk eyed them curiously, but he assigned her a room and handed her a key. Nick lifted her suitcase out of the car. A curtain of rain danced on the pavement and bounced off the motel roof, soaking them both. She unlocked the door and turned to face him. Crystal raindrops glistened in her hair, and those sea-green eyes fringed with thick dark lashes seemed to warm for a moment. She smiled suddenly and his heartbeat kicked up another notch. "Thank you for showing me the way to the motel. I'd probably still be driving around, lost in a strange town. Now you'd better get in out of the rain."He nodded and handed her a card. "You need anything, call me. I'll see you in the morning."He noticed she watched him run back to his patrol car before going inside and locking the door.Nick drove away from the motel thinking about Macy Douglas. The sudden flare of attraction he'd felt that moment in the motel parking lot had surprised him, but he couldn't deny there had been a spark between them. The way she had stood up to him and to Sam, not giving an inch, was impressive. He'd give her one thing, she was a fighter. And she had the kind of beauty that would be hard for any man to resist. He'd known her grandmother Lassiter, and everyone in town knew about the brutal murder of Opal's daughter, Megan Douglas, and that Steve, Megan's husband, had been convicted of killing her and had died in prison. It was part of the town's history. A part most of them would just as soon forget. He drew up to a stoplight, his thoughts still on Macy.Opal had led a quiet life, not getting involved in community affairs, but he had a hunch her granddaughter would be different. Yet he sensed vulnerability behind that feisty behavior, as if she were afraid of something. Maybe he could find out more tomorrow at breakfast.Nick hurried home to change into dry clothes and then drove to the police station. Sam greeted him as he entered. "You get the Douglas woman settled all right?""She's at Motel 6. Or at least that's where I left her. Why? What's up?""I'm wondering why she came to town, and why now. She hasn't been back since she was a kid, and I've got a hunch she's up to something. You're too young to remember what it was like when Megan Douglas was killed. She was well liked, went to church, owned and ran her own business. Steve was something else.""How so?"

The story is well written, fast paced, and full of complex, broken people. Faith is a big part of the story too and I like that.Macy Douglas just lost her grandmother to cancer; before she died her grandmother mentioned something about a box. Macy found the box and found out about her mother's death, supposedly by her father's hand. Her father had died in prison; she must prove his innocence. A lawyer notified her that her mother's mother had died and she had inherited her family home. Unable to remember anything in her first seven years she goes back to hopefully remember what had actually happened. Macy's return brought out anger and hatred from some of the town. There were a few who believed her father innocent but didn't want the town pulled apart.Officer Nick Balwin bumps into her the night of her arrival. The light was on in the deserted house and he was afraid someone had finally broken into the house, as there had been several attempts. Macy's sees him looking into the window and runs out to confront him. Nick is drawn to Macy and against orders struggles to protect her, help her remember, and find the killer.A great journey of two people trying to prove that the people they loved did no wrong and to stay alive in the process. This is a great read.
