Bruno Johnson, a tough street cop, member of the elite violent-crime task force, feared by the bad guys, admired by the good, finds his life derailed when a personal tragedy forces him to break the law. Now he's an ex-con, and his life on parole is not going well. He is hassled by the police at every opportunity, and, to make matters even more difficult, his former partner, Robby Wicks, now a high-ranking detective, bullies him into helping solve a high profile crime...unofficially, of course.
Meanwhile Bruno's girlfriend, Marie, brings out the good, real Bruno, and even though they veer totally outside the law, he and Marie dedicate themselves to saving abused children and creating a type of underground railroad for neglected kids at risk - disposable kids.
What they must do is perilous as they take matters into their own hands, battling a warped justice system and Bruno's former partner, who has his own evil agenda.

I was not disappointed. I immediately identified with the main character, Bruno Johnson, and my interest was held until the last page. He was a good cop but got caught up in other things because of his soft spot for abused children. I don't want to ruin the story for you but he ends up being an ex- con and here the story begins. I have read a lot of police and detective novels and I was impressed that this one was refreshing and had twists that were not reinvented. Being in law enforcement, I can also attest that the author definitely had a handle on how both cops and crooks think and do. He also did a great job keeping police procedure understandable so that people not in law enforcement would also easily follow the story. I couldn't put the book down so I hope this author follows in the steps of well known authors such as Joseph Wambaugh, Patricia Cornwell, James Peterson, Janet Evanovich, James lee Burke, etc, and makes this the first in a series of books about the escapades of Bruno Johnson. An excellent fast paced read!

Bruno Johnson makes most other ex-cop protagonists look like wimps by comparison. Putnam doesn't so much invite you as grab you by the neck and pull you into L.A.'s underbelly where you can hear the sirens and smell the sweat. To say Bruno is flawed is an understatement, yet his motives are pure and his heart, while crusted, is in the right place. You move so fast through the pages you find yourself gasping for air. I guarantee you will not be able to put it down. Highest recommendation.

Populated with characters who add new meaning to the "good cop-bad cop" dichotomy, Putnam creates a layered identity for each of these cops and ex-cops that inhabit these gritty settings of Los Angeles county. The reader connects to them and turns the pages to learn their secrets and what consequences will result.Ex-detective Bruno Johnson leads this cast and his complexities make him at same time likable and unappealing. Putnam's background as retired detective, ex-Hawaii 5-0, etc, makes the seedy underside of cop-dom all too believable.I am recommending to all my friends and hope that we'll be able to follow Bruno in a future release.
