One of the most important public debates in our time By Roger Lipsey Ayaan Hirsi Ali has been conducting for some years now one of the most important public debates in our time and facing immense risk to do so. Her clarity of mind and purpose are stunning. For her there are three camps in Islam: Medina, Mecca, and Reform-minded. Her exposition and critique of their values and stances within the Muslim world and toward the non-Muslim world is uniquely insightful and, I hope, influential where it most counts in the Muslim world and among global political leaders, and among the rest of us who are not just along for the ride; we are involved. For me, on the basis of quite different experience from hers, Muslim civilization over the centuries divides differently--between its achievements in literature, visual art and craft, architecture, and spirituality, and the incessant violence and inhumanity of jihad today. Which is the true Islam? The honest answer is both--both the serenely glorious Taj Mahal and the insane massacre in Kenya. Islam is the Thousand and One Nights--among the greatest, funniest, most thought-provoking tales told on this Earth--and the beheadings. It is the fantastic carpets and rugs made by villagers, nomads, and teams of court artisans, and the blood endlessly spilled. It is the inspiring determination of young Malala and the disgusting determination of those who nearly murdered her because she champions education for girls. Ayaan Hirsi Ali wins the argument, in my view: it is time and past time for religious reform in Islam, so that the genius responsible for the books and carpets and supremely great buildings prevails over murderous chaos in the name of religion.
187 of 206 people found the following review helpful. Heretic Deserves A Hearing By S. Anne Johnson Ayaan Hirsi Ali is not the uncomplicated Islamophobe she has been portrayed as. She has a nuanced and important perspective to share. That is not to say that I agree with her every particular. But what is the point of only reading those you whole heartedly agree with? If you are not challenged, how do you learn? Fundamentalist Islam, like all fundamentalist religions, is oppressive to women and non-believers or even different believers. And the facts show that since the 1970s there has been a shift in Islam toward fundamentalism. Because this shift has global impacts and, even where localized, implicates human rights principles, an honest and searching discussion needs to be had about how to confront it and defeat it, preferably, as Ms. Hirsi Ali makes clear, through peaceful means. I applaud Ms. Hirsi Ali for continuing to speak out against fundamentalist Islam, despite all the criticism she has received--from all sides. Her writing is clear and measured. Her voice is engaged but not shrill. She has demonstrated a willingness to engage in a civil dialog about a pressing global issue. If only her detractors would do the same.

Although I do not agree with all her points the work is really valuable and a must read to all Muslims as well as non-Muslims. It took Christianity over 15 centuries to reform, hopefully Islam will get there faster...
