Finding Peter: A True Story of the Hand of Providence and Evidence of Life after Death, by William Peter Blatty

Review "The master has returned. The author of the scariest novel ever written and the funniest of the Pink Panther films has finally penned his own personal tale. One part Hollywood memoir (with appearances by everyone from Streisand to Elvis to Judy Garland) and one part spiritual autobiography, this is a work filled with uproarious laughs and not a few tears. Then just when you think you've figured it out, Blatty delivers a life-affirming twist as mysterious and moving as anything he has written. If you've ever lost a loved one and longed for their presence, Blatty's consoling wild ride in search of the hereafter is a journey you must take."—Raymond Arroyo, New York Times bestselling author and host of EWTN's The World Over Live"The author of the scariest movie ever made is also an endearing writer and laugh-out-loud hilarious. This book is as entertaining as it is profound."—Dinesh D'Souza, author of Life After Death: The Evidence"I couldn't put it down. I read it in one sitting. Truly, a wonderful book. Much more than an eloquent and oftentimes very funny autobiography, Finding Peter is also a very moving expression of the loss of loved ones. A must-read for all who want to believe that Providence works miracles in our lives, often inexplicably. I loved it."—Stacy Keach, actor and narrator

I found this book both hilariously funny and profoundly moving By A critic I found this book both hilariously funny and profoundly moving; a rare combination in any book exceptone written by the author of both "The Exorcist" and "The Ninth Configuration". Much of it is an account ofthe author's life which, if his stories are to be believed, is one of the most extraordinary I have ever read abouta contemporary writer. But the heart (and soul) of the book is about the author's 19-year-old son Peter whodied of a rare heart condition and whose communications with his parents (as described by Blatty) have led theauthor to the unshakeable conviction that life does not in fact end at death. While the examples Blatty offersof his son Peter's continued presence do not convince me in every instance, I must say that they are impressivewhen taken as a whole and seem to amount to a great deal more than mere coincidences. But whatever the case,I found Blatty's reflections upon the question of death and the possibility of an afterlife extremely interesting andthought-provoking - not to say moving which this book certainly is. If you have mourned the death of a loved oneas I have and have often wondered if there is not something more to life than we have dreamed of in our philosophiesthen this is a book that will speak to you on many levels. I highly recommend it.

Whether or not you believe, it's FUNNY - so enjoy! :-) By Chrissy the Stooges Woman Even if you're a skeptic, if you enjoy good comic writing and entertaining stories about old-time Hollywood, you owe it to yourself to read this!I was perusing this on my Kindle while taking a relaxing bath (as you do). Just as I was about to step out of the tub, I got to the anecdote about Mickey Rooney trying to seduce Tallulah Bankhead. I laughed so hard I almost found out about the afterlife for myself!Highly recommended, whether or not you believe at the end!

Having lost our daughter almost nineteen years ago, I read Mr. Blatty's book, hoping to learn from his experiences. I haven't had the kind of experiences he has, but I know she is always with us. He is both funny and profound. Thank you for such a personal, spiritual and humorous read.

Its not very deep but just enough for the average laymen. For those wanting more depth on the doctrine of the Bible I would suggest the book "Seven Reasons why you can trust the Bible" by Erwin Lutzer.

"Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth." - John 17:17 By Tom In "Why Believe the Bible" Pastor Johnny Mac upholds the Bible as the infallible and inerrant Word of God. This book would be especially helpful for new believers but even seasoned Christians would enjoy reading it and learning a thing or two. You can't go wrong with Pastor Johnny Mac.

Okay, not great -- loses steam -- prefer the 1st one By Avid Reader The author does a decent but not wonderful follow up to her popular, well written 100 Things book. You get the sense that she loses steam, especially at the end when the tips perceptibly go from many pages to just half a page. The insights are still well researched and backed by data.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A few WOWs here and there By Scott Magnificent I haven’t read the first book, but chose to read the follow-up instead. As with many “xx things about” books, this was not the most enjoyable thing to read. However, it does provide some reinforcement on topics if you’ve already done some research. For example, she mentions System 1 (she calls “truthiness”) and System 2 thinking from the book “Thinking Fast and Slow”. It also comes across a few marketing-related subjects like shopping and storytelling based on cognitive dissonance. The book does fall of a bit at the last quarter, which gives you the impression that the author is rushing just to reach 100 (there you go, cognitive dissonance!).

It's 1928 ... the Great Depression lurks just around the corner. Divorcing a cheating husband means disgracing her family, but Claire Devoe can't take it anymore. Forced to provide for herself, she travels the Midwest with a sales crew. Can she trust the God who didn't save her first marriage to lead her through the maze of new love and overwhelming expectations? The long twilight of the Great Depression-with its debt, disgrace, drought, and despair-becomes the crucible that remakes her life. Daughter of the Cimarron is the fictionalized tale of the author's mother as she went from ragtime to breadlines, from the silent cities and melancholy towns to a dugout overlooking the Cimarron Canyon, from brokenness to strength. "Readers who find themselves wrestling for control over what needs to be left in God's hands will see themselves in Claire." ROMANTIC TIMES "As a consummate crafter of words and characters, Sam Hall weaves an engaging story of one woman's search for herself and her God." BILL MYERS, Author of Eli "Bravo to author Sam Hall on his debut novel, Daughter of the Cimarron! His heroine is a character you'll never forget. Troubled, but always determined, she and the love of her life struggle through the Depression and the Dust Bowl in a twister of a story. Sam doesn't shy away from the tough issues, both in life and love, and his hard work has paid off in a memorable tale of what really matters." LESLIE GOULD, #1 Best-Selling and Christy Award-Winning Author "Sam Hall writes the kind of narrative I love most, the search for self amidst the search for faith." GINA OCHSNER, Author of The Necessary Grace to Fall (Winner of the Flannery O'Connor Award) and People I Wanted to Be (Winner of the Oregon Book Award) "Daughter of the Cimarron grips the reader's heart while at the same time illuminating the historical period in which the story is set. Author Samuel Hall hits all the right notes in this compelling debut novel. Recommended!" ANN SHOREY, Author of the At Home in Beldon Grove and Sisters at Heart Series "Sam Hall's debut novel, Daughter of the Cimarron, kept me reading when I should have been doing other things. A historical novel based on real life, its readers are plunged into Claire's struggle to live down a divorce and find a way to earn a living in 1928, at the beginning of the Great Depression. How do we find faith after we've been disillusioned? Crawl under the covers if you plan to read this book before bedtime, because you won't want to put it down." MARION DUCKWORTH, Author of 16 Books, including Naked on God's Doorstep and The Greening of Mrs. Duckworth

My wife and I were invited into her home in Forgan, OK, what a great experience this was. Several years later we had the pleasure of meeting Samuel Hall, this too was a great honor. When we learned of the 'Daughter of the Cimarron', we hasten to purchase a copy. The author enable me to become involved in Claire's life, almost as an observer, I enjoyed her happy times, sad times, lonely times, and even her angry times. There were periods that I felt like an eavesdropper. This book was an eye opener to me, learning in depth what my parents experienced during the 'Great Depression'. As a 76 year old, not much impresses me as this book has these last few days. My express compliments to Mr. Sam Hall, for a work that in my considered opinion was quite stirring and worthwhile read. Congratulations.

I have been privileged to know Sam Hall for a few years now, but I did not know until now that he is also a gifted writer. This story is the story of his parents, told in the form of a novel. It recounts their early lives, their failed marriages, and their marriage to each other. Their story begins in the run-up to the Great Depression and takes the reader well into that era. Very much to Sam's credit, the narrative focuses very little on the Depression itself or its political ramifications. Certainly, there is more than enough commentary there. Rather, he is telling of the lives his parents, their interactions with each other, with their friends and family, and how they coped during this time. What we see here is a married couple with all the issues that couples face as they struggle to make a life together, compounded by their financial difficulties implicit in the Depression. And ultimately, we see their coming to Faith in Christ together. It is clear that Sam spent a lot of time discussing these times with his Mom and Dad, and that he loved them enough to record their story in such a unique way. I very much recommend 'Daughter Of The Cimarron', for its look into the lives of Sam's parents. It likewise tells the story our parents and grandparents who experienced this time.

Its high quality reporting is centered around the Great Depression years in America. The essence of that challenging period of time in our national heritage is captured by this author. Reading Samuel Hall's book literally allowed me to view the Depression years as though I were living in that period of history. I am thankful the author invested so much time, energy, and love into this chronicle. Read his fine work if you enjoy good writing that provokes thought, provides vicarious experience, teaches history, and demonstrates the value of perseverance through difficult times. I believe reading this book strengthened me.

This is digital and I knew it was. I don't have a smart phone or an I phone so for me to really use the book I have to either boot up my laptop and take it in the kitchen or print what I am going to be using. I usually print it. Just not something I refer to often because it is very inconvenient for me.

Britain's pagan past, with its mysterious monuments, atmospheric sites, enigmatic artifacts, bloodthirsty legends, and cryptic inscriptions, is both enthralling and perplexing to a resident of the twenty-first century. In this ambitious and thoroughly up-to-date book, Ronald Hutton reveals the long development, rapid suppression, and enduring cultural significance of paganism, from the Paleolithic Era to the coming of Christianity. He draws on an array of recently discovered evidence and shows how new findings have radically transformed understandings of belief and ritual in Britain before the arrival of organized religion.   Setting forth a chronological narrative, Hutton along the way makes side visits to explore specific locations of ancient pagan activity. He includes the well-known sacred sites—Stonehenge, Avebury, Seahenge, Maiden Castle, Anglesey—as well as more obscure locations across the mainland and coastal islands. In tireless pursuit of the elusive “why” of pagan behavior, Hutton astonishes with the breadth of his understanding of Britain’s deep past and inspires with the originality of his insights.

An exceptional book By Comment Man Ronald Hutton's Pagan Britain is a fascinating and comprehensive survey of the archaeological and historical evidence for British paganism. His erudition is amazing. Hutton considers literally hundreds of articles, books, objects and sites in his quest to provide a complete review of what is known about British pagan beliefs. He also traces how British paganism has been interpreted from Victorian times to the present day. The historiography often fascinated me as much as the discussions of henges and burial mounds. He analyzes how scientists and humanists approach the same material in markedly different fashions. Thus, the book is ultimately a meditation on how (in his words) "truth can be established in scholarship...especially in the study of the remote past."I can best give you an idea of his comprehensive approach by discussing his chapters on Mesolithic and Neolithic Britain. He discusses famous sites, such as Stonehenge, and the history of both the research at the site and theories about the site. He discusses typical artifacts from the period, and how they have been used to contemporary scholars to try to understand the past. Scholars have used many approaches to understand this material and Hutton never uses dismissive language to discuss any of them. He has a fascinating discussion on how contemporary academicians and "alternative" archaeologists have approached the same material. He traces the intellectual history of both and shows how what was yesterday's "alternative" explanation sometimes becomes today's orthodoxy. Again and again, Hutton emphasizes how little we actually know about the preliterate past and how many explanations can be attached to the same artifacts. Archaeology of religion, he writes, can "recover the material remains of ritual action...but not (usually) the ideas which inspired them."Little seems to escape his purview as he discusses paganism through the Iron Age, Roman Britain and the conversion of Britain to Christianity. He also has a comprehensive discussion of possible survivals of paganism in Christian period. Contemporary Pagans may be disappointed that he finds relatively little evidence for paganism surviving into the medieval age. In these chapters again he emphasizes what is actually concretely known and how this evidence is used. Thus, in discussing the possibility of human sacrifices, he devotes much time to detailing graves, burial practices and human skeletal remains found in unusual locations. Decapitated skeletons have been found and Hutton discusses alternative explanations for this. Roman sources claiming the British practiced human sacrifice are carefully deconstructed. Hutton also discusses various contemporary theories about human sacrifice. Hutton's conclusion here--as it is again and again in this book--is that the evidence supports a variety of possible explanation for archaeological remains and that human sacrifice in prehistoric Britain remains and will probably remain unprovable. He also discusses the intellectual history of modern interpretations of the British pagan past. Thus, he has an illuminating discussion on the "Goddess" theory which so riveted many scholars earlier in the 20th century. He shows how the needs and thought patterns of the present have often skewed the interpretations of the past.Hutton is a very fine writer. His prose is always clear and often beautiful. I imagined once or twice that a reincarnation of Shakespeare might shamelessly lift from Hutton's prose the way the actual bard did from Holinshed, though I suppose today creative plagiarism of that nature is out of style. The major difficulties reading the book result from the sheer amount of information presented. This is a dense and fascinating book. The book is illustrated with drawings and black and white photographs. Embedded in the text, they illuminate the argument of the book but do not particularly add to its beauty.I think anyone interested in history, archaeology, pagan religions or Britain would find this book well worth the time. Hutton is not sensational the way some books and TV shows about this material have been but his solid scholarship is much more illuminating.I do not know how a contemporary Pagan would react to this book; but it seems to me Hutton, a genial and intelligent man, is totally and completely respectful of contemporary Pagan spirituality and that a contemporary Pagan might very well want this book in his library.

In this detailed survey of the archaeology and history of pre-Christian Britain, Ronald Hutton demolishes most of the hypotheses and theories other scholars have put forth in the last 150 years. It's not that these earlier interpretations were entirely wrong, exactly; but as a historian, Prof. Hutton is interested in how the interpretations tell us more about the periods that produced them than they do about the remote past. The trouble with that past is that it leaves very little evidence of ritual behavior or beliefs, and there are many different ways, all legitimate, to interpret it. This book does not offer one coherent interpretation of Britain's Pagan past; it leaves readers to make up their own minds about which theories they find more persuasive, or in harmony with their own approach, meaning that any number of interpretations are possible and potentially equally valid. Two more things are noteworthy and innovative in this book. The first is that Prof. Hutton takes seriously the work of amateur, non-academic archaeologists and historians, many of whom have made important contributions to knowledge about ancient ritual sites. The second is his treatment of how interpretations of Pagan Britain have always been rooted in the cultural and historical contexts that produced them. Thus, the book's most valuable contribution is its historicization of archaeological and historical interpretations of how people thought about pagans and their ritual practice. This book will be of great interest to archaeologists, historians, and anyone interested in epistemology: how we know what we know. It will also appeal to modern Pagans looking for antecedents, as long as they are comfortable with uncertainty and multiple interpretations of the past.

By John Richard Lovell Once again Hutton provides a meticulously written work that is long on scholarly research and short on the fuzziness and conjecture that is seen in a lot of work on this subject. 'Pagan Britain ' covers the length and breadth of the island with frequent references to Ireland as well. Although Hutton's work is (at times) heavy going, this is really to be expected when the material is covered in such exhaustive depth, the information contained in this book can be used again and again for academic research ( which is my purpose) or for simply allowing oneself to take a snapshot look back into a much maligned period in history. Hutton doesn't advocate any specific position in this book, but he does allow room for new scholarly works that could be viewed as controversial. A very interesting book and an important book for any seerious book collector.

On Dee Branch’s first date with Johnnie Oliver, a fourth-generation funeral director, she knew she was in for a unique relationship when he had to leave “for just a minute”—and he came back to the car with a corpse.

Over twenty years later, Dee was still in love with her charming southern gentleman when he passed away suddenly in 2007. Determined to carry on Johnnie’s work, Dee earned her mortuary science degree, only to find herself no longer needed in the family business. So Dee crossed the racial divide in the most segregated industry in America and joined the staff of an African-American funeral home as a single white woman.

In The Undertaker’s Wife, Oliver draws from her wealth of experience to provide candid and often hysterically funny advice on dying well and surviving the loss of those who have gone before. Her insights on the common ground of grief, survival, and the ever-present faithfulness of God (to all of us, regardless of our race, religious upbringing, or socio-economic background) will help readers prepare for one of life’s only certainties—and do it with wisdom, grace, and a healthy dose of joy.

This is a heartfelt account of one woman's journey through life, love, marriage and death (on many levels.)If you want a good laugh (as in belly laugh where you have tears streaming down your face) this is the book to do it. Granted, the entire book is not that way, there are many different emotional reactions caused by this memoir, but laughter is certainly one of them. Most of the time I don't read memoirs with any gusto, but I finished this book in a single afternoon. The author is so honest about her feelings and I felt a kinship with her early on in her writing. This is a book that you won't forget once you have read it. I am not particularly religious, and there is a lot of talk about God in this book, but it is not the in your face sort of preaching that many books present. Instead, you will find the beliefs of this woman and those she came into contact with during the course of her life clearly stated, but she never tells the reader what to believe.I have the utmost respect for Dee and her ability to not only roll with the changes in her life but to improve it every step of the way. She also offers some great advice.I definitely recommend this book. This review is based on a complimentary copy from the publisher and provided through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

The humor spills off the pages in tummy aching doses, enabling the reader appreciate the sad moments of loss. I love the simplicity of Dee' s relationship with the Lord, and how real she is in her questioning and assumptions about God. This book put a smile on my face from page one to the end, with an evenly spread sprinkling of tears which made it a 5-star read...not to mention the most useful advice for everyone destined to die eventually!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. unique story By Kelsey I was originally drawn to this book because I am great friends with a real life undertaker's wife. Their stories are some of my favorites. Just like the author, Dee Oliver, describes on her first date, my friend has had to be a part of a few "detours" with her husband while a "third wheel" joined them in the back of their van. So I was excited to read some more stories from an undertaker's wife. This book shares the true story of Oliver's first dates with her husband, a fourth generation funeral director, as well as his sudden death which left her with their three girls to raise. She then shares her journey into becoming a certified funeral director. This book, while entertaining, wasn't super captivating for me. There are bits of humor, some of which is redundant, and glimmers here and there of her faith. The story is interesting, but I found myself having a hard time relating to her wealthy, Southern lifestyle: she mentions being in Garden Club, and the Country Club, and her decorator, and lawn guy, and botox. Actually, she mentions botox A LOT. Which just felt strange to me.I did appreciate the vulnerability she shared, and I liked that the last few chapters were more "how-to" than story. She shared what was helpful to her in her early widow days. And she shared what spouses should do to prepare for their death, because we never know when it will happen and the even the smallest preparations-- like having your obituary already written-- can help your grieving family tremendously.I finished this book wanting it to contain a little more depth, but it was a unique story none the less.I was provided a copy of this book from the publisher, but all opinions are my own.
