The key to this book is that it outlines both the science and art of anxiety therapy. The science of overcoming anxiety is using the well researched approach called gradual exposure therapy which involves helping individuals gradually face their fears. The art of therapy is figuring out how to actually convince someone to face their fears. Jed describes motivational techniques, cognitive behavioral strategies, exercises, relaxation and mindfulness guides to lower anxiety to the point where individuals can begin to confront their fears . The book covers: simple phobias, social phobia, selective mutism, separation anxiety and school refusal, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, somatic symptom disorder and/or illness anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, perfectionism, and other common fears.

He explains all of the major types of anxiety (including social anxiety, generalized anxiety, phobias, OCD, perfectionism, school refusal, selective mutism, and more) and gives us the words and methods to use to show kids and teens that we know how to support them and to guide them in facing their fears. He includes relaxation strategies, exposure therapy, and several components of cognitive behavioral therapies. He packs in a great deal of information about working with those on the autism spectrum as well, from strategies for those who are non-verbal to individuals with high-functioning Asperger's.

Dr. Baker's book has been a valuable tool in my work with anxious children and teens. The materials are easy to use and understand. The scientific reasoning approach has worked well with many of my spectrum clients who have natural tendencies for concrete thinking. I found the chapters with case examples very useful in working with clients who present with various forms of anxiety. I will keep it on my desk rather than the book shelf!Janice M. Bryk LCSW

A rewarding experience By Katherine Davis Extremely useful tool for gaining a better understanding of anxiety-related behaviors and how to use that understanding to apply the practical strategies developed by Dr. Baker. I highly recommend this book for parents and teachers alike as the increasing academic and social expectations of children/teens can impair their ability to appropriately manage stress. Overcoming Anxiety In Children and Teens offers compassionate insights and effective management strategies for children/teens who have varying levels of anxiety. Success is apparent in positive changes in behavior, confidence, and independence...a very rewarding experience.

The life of Susanna Wesley 1669–1742 is both intriguing and illuminating to explore. This book presents her life in ways that will astound the modern reader. Susanna was brought up in a Puritan home as the youngest of twenty–five children. As a teenager, she became a member of the Church of England. She became the wife of a chronically debt–ridden parish rector in an English village. She said, I have had a large experience of what the world calls adverse fortune. Nonetheless, Susanna managed to pass down to her children Christian principles that stayed with them. Ray Comfort and Trish Ramos quote from Susanna's many letters and other sources to reveal a true woman of faith, who strongly endured the trials of life. Susanna Wesley: Her Remarkable Life gives readers a generous glimpse into the life of this exemplary wife and mother. In addition, the authors provide us with contemporary illustrations and faith–building stories that parallel Susanna's experiences of walking out her faith.

I think the layout of chapters was a little unusual. It was almost like a research for a dissertation rather than a typical biography. I would like to read another one on her life as well personally. This book had a lot of information on Puritan writers and quotes by puritans which may or may not have influenced her life. There were a lot of uplifting quotes by those writers, but to me a biography is about a person, not about all the people who she could have met. I would probably give this a 3 1/2 star if Amazon would allow it.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A Great Resource By Amoran Girl Heidi Sawyer covers a lot of ground in her book about highly intuitive people. Beginning with how to recognize if you are highly sensitive, the book progresses to how to come to terms with and embrace it. You are who you are, the narrative says often enough, and this was to me the most helpful part. There are case histories, including examples from the author’s own life, and references to research studies to support her conclusions. While I did not always agree with every statement on every page, there are so many gems in this book that my highlighter pen ran dry! This is a wonderful resource whether you are brand new to the concept of (and perhaps discovering yourself as) a Highly Intuitive-Sensitive person, or well on your journey to living to your fullness as one.

12 of 15 people found the following review helpful. It's like God had Heidi write this just for me. By Amazon Customer This is the book I've been waiting for all my life, in fact it was so close to home that it felt like Heidi had been inside my mind and knew my thoughts and feelings. It has changed my life and I find more self acceptance inside now. i read close to half the first sitting and found it very open and honest with some personal life experiences along the way. It's one of those books that I want to keep close to me forever. I understand myself more, God more and my fellow humans much more and I can now notice in them if they're intuitive. It's very comforting. She answers all the questions I've tried to find the answers to for years. It's witty and charming and written in a very easy to read style which I personally like. In fact I plan on reading it again just as soon as I can digest what this information means for my life and I can see myself using her suggestions every day. I highly recommend it for anyone who even remotely questions if they're intuitive. Just read it.....you will find your spiritual world open more with every word.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. astounding, accurate, helpful book. By Amazon Customer I LOVE this book. It's like finally someone understands me. Understands my sensitivity, my quirks, my ability to read people, have people share their deepest secrets.... it's reassuring to know that I'm perfectly ok with these abilities. What a beautiful relief.

Good Kids, Big Events, & Matching T-Shirts invites youth leaders into a game-changing conversation. It helps them create and sustain a ministry to youth that is fueled by an effective, contagious relationship with God and others. Writer and youth worker David Hertweck makes great discoveries with fellow youth leaders while moving through three pivotal points:   Are youth becoming fluent in the gospel? Are youth Spirit-dependent? Do youth have biblical community?   Hertweck, a veteran youth worker, explains that if those who work in student ministry celebrate some wins while unintentionally missing the big picture―new life in Christ―students will believe the wrong things count. That could have enormous implications for how today’s kids live out their faith now and as adults.   When youth leaders choose to refocus on these values, they are heeding Jesus’ command to make disciples. The teens in their groups will thrive both now and later.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. My favorite book on youth ministry. By Tyler This book truly changed the way that I do ministry. It did not simply offer some new idea to implement, but instead it offered a compelling argument for simplifying youth ministry, by presenting the Gospel in perpetual and diverse ways.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Perfect mix of timeless principles & practical application By Michael Becher There are three huge wins for this book. First, it's packed with meaty, timeless, biblical principles that will take time to flesh out opposed to flimsy, dated, personal fads that die by the the time the next iPhone comes out.Second, the content outlined by David isn't limited to the world of youth ministry but is useful and recommended for anyone leading a ministry. It is a great addition to, and holds up to, the most sought after youth ministry resources available today. That's because he doesn't start with youth ministry practices and then fits the gospel into it, he starts with the gospel and outlines youth ministry practices within it.Lastly, it's super practical. Along with each well-developed section on three main ways to measure ministry effectiveness (gospel-fluency, Spirit-dependency, and biblical-community) he includes a chapter with practical ways to begin to implement them. He uses the insights of various other proven youth ministry leaders to add to the conversation as well. But the thing I love most about this book is the same reason I like books like "Simple Church" by Thomas Rainer & Eric Geiger and "Deep & Wide" by Andy Stanely.; they aren't proposing models to imitate or ministries to emulate, but are outlining timeless perspectives to consider, chew one with your team, and implement as it makes sense for the dynamics of your ministry and church setting.David isn't proposing you "do ministry like this because it's the best way" he simply awakes our hearts to gospel and how it, and it alone, should shape how we evaluate ministry effectiveness. And he does it with great wit, humor, and unapologetic urgency.Overall, this book raises the bar on measuring the effectiveness of youth ministry in this informative, and much needed resource for youth leaders today. David challenges the natural tendencies and inclinations youth workers fall prey and introduces deeper, more meaningful questions to consider. It doesn't take long to realize that he is a seasoned youth leader, with years under his belt. He's not interested in quick fixes... he's zealous for the next generation of students to grasp the gospel, love the Savior, and be on mission with God for the rest of their lives. You leave loving Jesus more, and feeling equipped to help teenagers love him too! This should be on the shelf of every youth worker on the planet.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. but did Jesus come to make us morally superior? Big events are cool By GOwensby How many times have you thought about the youth ministry in which you are involved and thought, "Am I making a difference?" David Hertweck proposes that it could be because we are basing our success on the wrong values. Sure we want our students to behave, but did Jesus come to make us morally superior? Big events are cool, but is that what the Gospel is about? David's writing is refreshingly honest and unapologetic about the need to make Jesus the center and core of our youth ministries. Buy this one now and be challenged.

It is broken into six sections -Truth DetectivesBible Beauty and BeausDivine DesignBody BuildersCharacter QuestMind GamesThe first section talks about lies girls believe and the truth in Scripture that counters that lie. The next about growing their inner beauty. The third section focuses more on how amazing God the Creator is and how to enjoy His creation and see Him in it. Section four covers praying power, using their mental muscles and exercises in encouragement. The Character quest is exactly what its name says - a quest for character. And last but not least the Mind Game section which includes questions, puzzles, and games to grow them spiritually. Each day begins with a short Scripture verse, then a devotional with a story and explanation of how to apply that verse to our lives, and ends with a prayer pointer. On some days there are additional things to do such as - questions to answer, something to cook, or an activity to do.I really enjoyed this devotional and am excited to be able to share it with my daughter. I would say its mostly geared towards younger elementary age girls. I believe most girls will enjoy using it and doing the activities as well as finding things they can apply to their lives.Personally, the only thing I may have wished different would have been a little more Scripture. Maybe an actual passage to read instead of just one verse, but overall I found it quite appealing.

For ex By Alysa This book is a 90 day devotional (actually 86 specified days) geared toward girls. Honor and Faith are two girls who "wrote" this book with the purpose of remembering that God sees the bigger picture. There are six sections in the book. Each day starts with a scripture verse and ends with a Prayer Pointer (which is a one line prayer that applies to the reading).Section 1: Truth Detectives--- Each day in this section has a Lie that girls believe and the Truth based on scripture. An example of a Lie and Truth are: "I need to have money to be happy" and the Truth is "God not only meets our needs--He's what we need most!" There is a paragraph or two under both the lie and the truth that helps explain them.Section 2: Bible Beauties and Beaus--- Each day in this section talks about a woman or man in the Bible who God used in a great way. For example, Hagar--The One Who Was Seen & Josiah-- The King Who Repented.Section 3: Divine Design-- This section talks about a variety of subjects that show how God's designed the world around us. Examples include: the platypus, pearls, and chocolate. There is also a baking recipe and instructions for a craft in this section.Section 4: Body Builders-- Each day gives instructions for practical ways of building the reader's faith and how the reader can encourage others.Section 5: Character Quest-- This section has thought provoking questions related character traits that brave girls will want to cultivate in their lives. For example, courage, truth telling, love, and peace.Section 6: Mind Games--This section includes instructions to a game, cross word puzzles and an opportunity for the reader to insert her name throughout 1 Corinthians 13 (the Love chapter). All six of these sections end with a question(s) and space to journal the answer.I reviewed a different devotional book several months ago with the purpose of trying to find a devotional that was age appropriate for my 8 year old daughter. I thought that book was too advanced for my daughter so when the opportunity to review this book came, I was hopeful that it might be what I was looking for. It was! I am pleased to say that it is perfect for my daughter. She has already started reading it and loves it! I think a 90 day devotional is also a lot less overwhelming than the 365 day book. I think that the devotionals are simple enough for an early chapter book reader to understand but still thought provoking. This will be a good introduction to a daily devotional routine. I would say that this book is for girls who are 7-8 years old through the pre-teen ages.In accordance with the Federal Trade Commission I am required to disclose that Tommy Nelson provided this book for free in exchange for my review. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own.

By sc2424 Brave Girls Better Than Perfect is a 90 (or so) day devotional for preteen girls. It has an eye-catching cover and I love the "brave girls" theme :)I have a daughter who is 10, so we are constantly on the lookout for reading/devotional materials which will benefit her and be do-able for her. She took a look at this book already and asked when we could begin!Reading through this book I like the themes and the way they are written. I did think the format was kind of weird and disjointed -- the different sections are SO different, almost look like they were separate books just mashed together with the same cover -- the different areas are: Truth Detectives, Bible Beauties and Beaus, Divine Design, Body Builders, Character Quest, and Mind Games. Each of the daily devotions features a Bible verse(s), a narrative about the passage, and a suggested prayer. The format for each of the sections is different. My favorite was the first one, the Truth Detectives, where there is a lie (which we tell ourselves or hear from others) and the TRUTH (from God's Word). As a mom, the different formats throughout the book are a bit of a turn-off, but honestly, for using with my daughter, they will not be a hindrance at all. There are many many topics touched upon in this devotion book and I look forward to reading it and discussing them with her!YES, I will recommend this book and I would also suggest it as a gift for a preteen. It could be used with a parent or adult mentor or even on her own.I received a copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review. I was not required to write a positive review.

A provocative and contrarian religious history that charts the rise of Christianity from the point of view of traditional” religion from the religious scholar and critically acclaimed author of Augustine.

Pagans explores the rise of Christianity from a surprising and unique viewpoint: that of the people who witnessed their ways of life destroyed by what seemed then a powerful religious cult. These “pagans” were actually pious Greeks, Romans, Syrians, and Gauls who observed the traditions of their ancestors. To these devout polytheists, Christians who worshipped only one deity were immoral atheists who believed that a splash of water on the deathbed could erase a lifetime of sin.

Religious scholar James J. O’Donnell takes us on a lively tour of the Ancient Roman world through the fourth century CE, when Romans of every nationality, social class, and religious preference found their world suddenly constrained by rulers who preferred a strange new god. Some joined this new cult, while others denied its power, erroneously believing it was little more than a passing fad.

In Pagans, O’Donnell brings to life various pagan rites and essential features of Roman religion and life, offers fresh portraits of iconic historical figures, including Constantine, Julian, and Augustine, and explores important themes—Rome versus the east, civilization versus barbarism, plurality versus unity, rich versus poor, and tradition versus innovation—in this startling account.

Pagans: The End of Traditional Religion and the Rise of Christianity, by James J. O'Donnell

Review “Trenchantly interprets how an oddball religious cult became the official faith of Rome. . . . It makes for a thoughtful tour of Rome.” (New York Times Book Review)“Mr. O’Donnell tells the familiar story of Christianity’s heroic age of expansion, from Constantine to Theodosius, with verve and wit.” (Wall Street Journal)“James J. O’Donnell’s fine new book . . . is short but multilayered, erudite and dense.” (Cleveland Plain-Dealer)“[A] fascinating and insightful study of the pluralistic pagan gods. This book is a must read for everyone who is interested in either general history or the history of Christianity in particular.” (Washington Book Review)“Although [Pagans] is serious scholarship, it does not take itself too seriously. The result is an engaging view of antiquity few of us have seen. (Booklist)

From the Back Cover

“Mr. O’Donnell tells the familiar story of Christianity’s heroic age of expansion, from Constantine to Theodosius, with verve and wit.”—Wall Street Journal

For hundreds of years, religious and spiritual pluralism thrived in the Roman Empire. In the fourth century, however, as Christianity became the state religion, Christians developed the concept of the “pagan” to stigmatize and ostracize those who refused to devote themselves to the Christian god. These pagans were Greeks, Romans, Gauls, and Syrians who chose to piously observe the traditions of their ancestors.

Pagans uncovers how the ancient and deeply rooted religious traditions of these polytheistic Romans were undermined and suppressed by the rise of Christianity in little more than a hundred years. James J. O’Donnell explores the foundational features of Roman religion and culture, paints fresh portraits of iconic historical figures—including Constantine, Julian, and Augustine—and breathes new life into the defining tensions of the era: Rome versus the East, civilization versus barbarism, plurality versus unity, rich versus poor, and tradition versus innovation.

In this nuanced account of religious repression, O’Donnell offers an iconoclastic history of religion that tells an exciting new story that is deeply relevant to the way we think about religion in our own time.

How Christianity displaced traditional religions and defined Paganism By Montana Skyline O'Donnell has the scholarly credentials to provide a comprehensive account of the displacement of the traditional religions of the Mediterranean and near-eastern world by the Christians who subsequently labeled those religious cultures (and later non-Christian religions) as "pagan." This is not that comprehensive treatment. It does, however, offer a fair amount of insight into the weakening traditions that fell out of favor, as well as a corrective to some of the dubious history of struggle between Christianity and the losing traditions. The book's tone, particularly the first half of the book, which seeks to put the reader in the time and mind-set of the classical religious culture, is rather easy-going. This has the benefit of making for quick and often amusing reading, but also undermines the seriousness of its treatment at times. The book's first half does succeed in giving the reader an improved sense of what "religion without a history" may have been like for contemporaries, but otherwise seems disjointed. The book's second half, "The History of Paganism," is more interesting: Not because it provides a detailed history of the religions preceding or competing with early Christianity (it doesn't and disclaims doing so), but rather because it explains how the notion of "paganism" arose as defined by Christianity. Put differently, the subject matter is not a history of traditional, non-Christian beliefs, but rather how Christianity came to define the notion of paganism. At times, this is a bit too clever in approach. That being said, O'Donnell has a fine grasp of the development of Christianity in calculated opposition to a supposed pagan alternative, and provides many nice insights into the Christian mythology developed. One would expect no less from the author of a definitive, three-volume treatment of Augustine, as well as the well-regarded "The Ruin of the Roman Empire."In sum, this is not exactly the book that I expected on purchase, and I think that it suffers somewhat from tone and lack of a sustained argument of theme --- but it is an interesting read and offers many smart observations about Christianity's displacement of classical/traditional religions.

Sometimes annoying but always thought-provoking By physics student I agree with Montana Skyline's extensive review above: the style can be annoyingly clever. For example, the subject of a chapter entitled "The First Christian Emperor" turns out to be Julian the Apostate, the last pagan Emperor of Rome, who followed after several Christian emperors. But even here O'Donnell is thought-provoking. His point is that Julian was the first emperor who grew up with a Christian education. Many such insights appear throughout. This small book cannot be comprehensive, but by the same token it's quite readable. So a full five stars from me!

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. The Dividing Line Between Pagans and Christians By R.H. It is a curious book. The first two chapters held marginal interest and I almost put the book down. Somewhere in the third chapter (An Eloquent Man), it suddenly picked up and became a fascinating read. So, what this historical piece covers is this transformation of Rome from a wide-open field of religion to one that is dominated by Christianity, and eventually dissolves the empire. It lays out the habits and rituals of old Rome, and how it slowly became a different atmosphere. For those trying to conceive how the Roman Empire came to an end.....I would suggest to start with this book.As for the read? Well....you need to have some interest in the period (Roman era), the track of the Christian religion, and history. I might also suggest a brief read over the leadership of Rome prior to taking on this book because various names get mentioned and you need some insight. Overall, I think the book probably needed a better edit of chapter one/two, but it does hold your interest as you get deeper into the book. I also think that chapter ten (Constantine) probably deserves an entire book by itself, with O'Donnell opening up a lot of insight to the Constantine era (more than I ever knew). A great read for the Roman era.

PREFACE If the reader has ever met with the works of the learned folk-lorist G. Pitré, or the articles contributed by "Lady Vere De Vere" to the Italian Rivista, or that of J. H. Andrews to Folk-Lore, 1 he will be aware that there are in Italy great numbers of strege, fortune-tellers or witches, who divine by cards, perform strange ceremonies in which spirits are supposed to be invoked, make and sell amulets, and, in fact, comport themselves generally as their reputed kind are wont to do, be they Black Voodoos in America or sorceresses anywhere. But the Italian strega or sorceress is in certain respects a different character from these. In most cases she comes of a family in which her calling or art has been practised for many generations. I have no doubt that there are in stances in which the ancestry remounts to mediæval, Roman, or it may be Etruscan times. The result has naturally been the accumulation in such families of much tradition. But in Northern Italy, as its literature indicates, though there has been some slight gathering of fairy tales and popular superstitions by scholars, there has never existed the least interest as regarded the strange lore of the witches, nor any suspicion that it embraced an incredible quantity of old Roman minor myths and legends, such as Ovid has recorded, but of which much escaped him and all other Latin writers. This ignorance was greatly aided by the wizards themselves, in making a profound secret of all their traditions, urged thereto by fear of the priests. In fact, the latter all unconsciously actually contributed immensely to the preservation of such lore, since the charm of the forbidden is very great, and witchcraft, like the truffle, grows best and has its raciest flavour when most deeply hidden. However this may be, both priest and wizard are vanishing now with incredible rapidity--it has even struck a French writer that a Franciscan in a railway carriage is a strange anomaly--and a few more years of newspapers and bicycles (Heaven knows what it will be when flying-machines appear!) will probably cause an evanishment of all. However, they die slowly, and even yet there are old people in the Romagna of the North who know the Etruscan names of the Twelve Gods, and invocations to Bacchus, Jupiter, and Venus, Mercury, and the Lares or ancestral spirits, and in the cities are women who prepare strange amulets, over which they mutter spells, all known in the old Roman time, and who can astonish even the learned by their legends of Latin gods, mingled with lore which may be found in Cato or Theocritus. With one of these I became intimately acquainted in 1886, and have ever since employed her specially to collect among her sisters of the hidden spell in many places all the traditions of the olden time known to them. It is true that I have drawn from other sources, but this woman by long practice has perfectly learned what few understand, or just what I want, and how to extract it from those of her kind. Among other strange relics, she succeeded, after many years, in obtaining the following "Gospel," which I have in her handwriting. A full account of its nature with many details will be found in an Appendix. I do not know definitely whether my informant derived a part of these traditions from written sources or oral narration, but believe it was chiefly the latter. However, there are a few wizards who copy or preserve documents relative to their art. I have not seen my collector since the "Gospel" was sent to me. I hope at some future time to be better informed. For brief explanation I may say that witch craft is known to its votaries as la vecchia religione, or the old religion, of which Diana is the Goddess, her daughter Aradia (or Herodias) the female Messiah, and that this little work sets forth how the latter was born, came down to earth, established witches and witchcraft, and then returned to heaven...

Aradia: Gospel of the Witches (Annotated), by Charles Godfrey Leland

About the Author Charles Godfrey Leland (August 15, 1824 – March 20, 1903) was an American humorist and folklorist, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was educated at Princeton University and in Europe. Leland worked in journalism, travelled extensively, and became interested in folklore and folk linguistics, publishing books and articles on American and European languages and folk traditions. By the end of his life shortly after the turn of the century, Leland had worked in a wide variety of trades, achieved recognition as the author of the comic Hans Breitmann’s Ballads, fought in two conflicts, and had written what was to become a primary source text for Neopaganism half a century later, Aradia, or the Gospel of the Witches. Leland travelled widely, eventually settling in London. In his travels, he made a study of the Gypsies, on whom he wrote more than one book. Leland began to publish a number of books on ethnography, folklore and language. His fame during his lifetime rested chiefly on his comic Hans Breitmann’s Ballads (1871), written in a combination of broken English and German (not to be confused, as it often has been, with Pennsylvania German). His writings on Algonquian and gypsy culture were part of the contemporary interest in pagan and Aryan traditions. He erroneously claimed to have discovered 'the fifth Celtic tongue': the form of Cant, spoken among Irish Travellers. He named it Shelta. Leland became president of the English Gypsy-Lore Society in 1888. Eleven years later Godfrey produced Aradia, or the Gospel of the Witches.

Everyone who reviewed this book made these assumptions which are grossly incorrect. 1) Lucifer(latin for light-bearer) is mentioned only once in the Bible, Isaiah 14:12 where it is used to refer to the king of Babylon. In Aradia the title of Light Bearer or Dawn Bringer is used to refer to the God Dianus who was Diana's other half/soulmate in Etruscan Mythology. 2)Aradia was never meant to be "a forerunner to Wicca". It was a scholarly work by Charles Leland documenting the vestiges of witchcraft in Northern Italy. Against popular opinion Wicca does NOT mean "practicer of the Celtic paths" it has become the title of a religion (thanks to Gerald Gardner...who apparently wasn't able to determine the meanings of "simple words"). If you claim to follow the Old Ways you should at least understand that *all* Old Ways are worthy of respect, even the Italian ones.Obviously, Aradia greatly influenced the creators of the modern Wicca religion. It is the first time the Charge appeared in print. (It was later taken by Gardner for his covens and rewritten by Doreen Valiente.) There is a lot of negative magick in this book. Then again, it is thought that Maddalena either belonged to a group of witches who were called "Malandanti" (evil witches) or she was purposely feeding Leland false information. However, the roots of the witchcraft are evident. They were descendants of Etruria, still living in the ancestral homeland of Tuscany. They were still worshipping their ancient Goddess of Light, Diana and Her other half, Dianus called Lucifer or Light Bringer.I highly recommend this book for historical purposes. The serious student of traditional witchcraft should definitely consider this book, especially at the relatively inexpensive price. I do not recommend this book to Wiccans unless they are interested in the roots of their religion i.e. important documents co-opted or plundered by Gardner et al.

Silenzio The controversies surrounding Leland's book aside, this edition, which includes several essays as well as side-by-side translations of the origianl texts, is an invaluable resource. No matter what its faults, "Aradia" remains an important link in the chain of neopaganism in the past century. This expanded edition will remain an important reference work for folklorists and ethnographers, and for Wiccans, Witches, and neopagans whose traditions have been heavily influenced by this work.

Italy's "strege" provide early inspiration to modern Wiccans By A Customer First published over 100 years ago this little book probablywould have vanished into obscurity like Leland's other works if ithadn't been one of Gerald Gardner's sources for building up his Wiccan traditions. While Leland claims to be presenting us with an authentic ancient, or at least medieval, treatise on the religion of the "strege" or Italian gypsy/witches, the text's validity is questionable. Leland claims to have obtained the manuscript from an Italian witch named Madellana who was the most recent witch in a long family line of witches. Critics have challenged the vailidity of the text & even Leland admits his manuscript is in Madellana's own handwritting. However, he attributes this to the fact that she had commited to paper what was a mostly oral tradition & not to the idea that she intentionally decieved him. Aradia contains little material that is recognizable as typical Wiccan doctrine but behind the corrupted Latin invocations & spells lie the inspiration behind "The Charge Of The Goddess". There are no mention of familar elements such as the pentagram & the word "Wicca" is never used. However, we find traces of what would become the ritual of "drawing down the moon" & the idea that meetings, or esbats, should be determined by a lunar calander & meetings were preferably held on nights of the full moon. We also encounter the requirement of ritual nudity.Besides the invocations, spells & rituals Aradia also offers a fair portion of witch mythology or witch-lore. There is the standard mother/moon goddess & father/sun god story. They differ from typcial Wiccan myth in the fact that their union produces a divine daughter instead of a divine son. This divine daughter (Aradia) is sent to Earth "to be a teacher unto women & men who fain would study witchcraft". While there are some respemblances between this "gospel" & modern Wiccan traditions in the area of ritual, they're hardly alike in intent. The main deities of Aradia are the mother goddess Diana & her husband the father god Lucifer. While Lucifer is clearly not synonymous with the biblical Lucifer it's obvious that some confusion between the two has occured. Aradia herself seem primarily to be goddesses of ill intent & protectors of genrally unsavory people. She teaches all the stock medeval maleficarum such as poisoning, blighting crops & man, determining future lovers & casting love spells. In the end Aradia is a combination of witch-lore, occultism, demonology & traces of Greek mythology & mystery religions. Such a unusual mixture of sources leads many to discredit Aradia as a fake. Leland never did produce the handwritten manuscript & even failed to produce Madellana herself as evidence. However, the mixture found in Aradia could also be the result of a long hidden & garbled oral tradition which had been corrupted over time by supersition & other religions. Either way, Aradia remains a forerunner of the Wiccan religion.

The Songs of Ascents: Psalms 120 to 134 in the Worship of Jerusalem's Temples, by David C. Mitchell

About the Author David Mitchell is a Scottish musicologist, biblical scholar, and musical director. He is Precentor and Director of Music in Holy Trinity Pro-Cathedral in Brussels. His ‘The Message of the Psalter’ (1997) proposes that the Book of Psalms was redacted to reflect an eschatological timetable similar to Zechariah 9-14. In ‘The Songs of Ascents: Psalms 120-134 in the Worship of the Jerusalem Temple’ (2015), he traces the Songs of Ascents as liturgy from the day of their first performance on 15 Ethanim 959 BC, to the last days of the second temple, and provides a reconstruction of their original music, based on the Masoretic cantillation. 'Messiah ben Joseph' is a detailed study of the most enigmatic figure in Rabbinic Literature, the dying Joshua Messiah ben Joseph, who also appears in the book of Psalms. By Book Foreword David Mitchell’s Songs of Ascents is a fresh direction in the study of the Psalms. In the twentieth century, scholars tended to regard the Psalms as ‘early’ (stemming from Solomon’s temple), against the older idea that they belonged to second temple Judaism, and there were many reconstructions of the kind of liturgy they belonged to. More recently, interest has shifted to the Psalter as a book, a compilation showing signs of deliberate design. Mitchell is the first scholar to combine these interests. The Psalms of Ascents, he argues, were composed not only for Solomon’s temple but actually for its dedication; yet they represent also a coherent collection, with shared themes and a progression of thought. Drawing on his musical knowledge, he also shows how they may have been sung, drawing on recent archaeomusicological insights into the meaning of the Masoretic cantillation signs. This is a novel and stimulating study, which should engage all who are interested in the origins of the Psalms. It depends on very detailed study by one who knows the Hebrew Psalter well, and who has access not only to technical musical knowledge not shared by many, but also to rabbinic sources and to modern scholarship. This ground-breaking study will have to be taken into account by future students of the most enigmatic Book of Psalms. Professor John Barton, FSA.

Mitchell is a Biblical scholar, archaeomusicologist and the author of the influential The Message of the Psalter released back in 1997. In The Songs of Ascents, he applies these skills to create a fresh and novel study on Psalms 120-134. Though he calls it a “commentary”, one soon recognizes a book that surpasses expectations from this label by encompassing ancient Israelite worship. If this still sounds too narrow or abstract, let me spoil the ending: this would have been a strong contender for my favourite book of 2015 if I had read it before the end of the year.Mitchell wants contribute something new to the study of these Psalms, so four avenues are pursued in In The Songs of Ascents:1. Mitchell aims to recover the ancient music of the Songs of Ascents. Upon first skimming through the book, I was shocked to see sheet music for each Psalm that attempts to capture the original music. Mitchell argues that the music of the Psalms is recoverable; this is “the first Psalms commentary to attempt a printed version of the ancient music of the Psalms” (x).2. Many studies have attempted to reconstruct theoretical settings for individual Psalms, while others have reacted by focusing only on the text. Mitchell avoids both paths and attempts to “reconstruct the ritual and liturgical context in which the Songs of Ascents were first sung” (x). He goes so far as to propose not only the single event for which they were created, but an exact date, even to the hour, of when these songs were first sung!3.Mitchell considers the different layers to these Psalms, such as historical events that lay behind them (Davidic covenant in Ps 132, situation of the kingdom at the time, etc) but also how they were later used prophetically. In their placement within the Psalter context, they contributed to the Messiah’s coming kingdom.4. Numerology, or gematria, is employed. Though modern biblical scholarship has generally avoided gematria due to abuse and excess, Mitchell argues that “it has always been intrinsic to rabbinic interpretation” (x) and that it plays a significant role in the Ascents that shouldn’t be ignored.Over the course of fifteen chapters, Mitchell examines the Ascents from different perspectives. In chapter one, the Songs of Ascents are seen as their own collection, within a collection (Psalter), within a collection (Bible). Unique features include a focus on Zion, a meta-narrative flow, and intentional structures. In chapter two, restrained numerology (gematria) is applied to reveal surprising “encoded messages” within the collection (p15). Chapter three explains that ma’alot is translatable as either “ascents” or “steps”, and thus applicable both to pilgrimages to Jerusalem and also the 15 steps of Solomon’s temple. Chapter four surveys the options for when this collection was written and compiled, and concludes that only the period from Solomon’s temple until his death (959-930BC) matches the details. So what period in Solomon’s reign would provoke this collection? Chapter five lays the foundation for Mitchell’s argument by giving a history of the ark, while chapter six answers the question by arguing that the Ascents form the liturgy of the ark’s entry into Solomon’s temple (see Ps 132). Chapter seven explores the authorship of these Psalms, suggesting that the ten anonymous Psalms are the work of Jeduthun and the Merarite Levites.Chapters eight through thirteen form a larger unit in the book devoted to the music of these Psalms. Chapter eight begins with the temple musicians and their instruments, while chapter nine is about singers and cantillation. Chapter ten uses rabbinic literature to recreate the Sukkot liturgy before AD70, and uses this as a lens to imagine that of Solomon’s time. Chapter eleven surveys the recent attempts to recover ancient melodies of the Psalms through the Masoretic cantillation, and chapter twelve explains how these are deciphered and applied in modern musical theory. In the longest chapter of the book, chapter thirteen provides sheet music for each of the 15 Ascent Psalms and a few pages of commentary that incorporates musical and liturgical insights. Chapter fourteen asks the question of why these songs were preserved if the kingdom, king, and temple were all gone when the Psalter was completed. The answer: these Psalms take on new eschatological hope for the ingathering of God’s people to Zion, according with the hopes passages like Zechariah 14:16, Micah 4:2, and Isaiah 2:3. Chapter fifteen concludes the book by explaining the relevance of the Psalms for today and the power of music. Four appendices explore the name of YHWH, the historicity of Solomon’s temple, the Hebrew calendar, and the debated meaning of the two cantillation marks. As I said at the beginning of the review, this is one of the best books I have read recently. It opened my eyes in many ways and was filled with provocative insights and suggestions. I was surprised how fruitful and frankly, fascinating, a study of ancient music and liturgy could be and how much could be known. Some of Mitchell’s suggestions are controversial and even idiosyncratic, but how else would one propose new ideas? I find the majority of the unique arguments within The Songs of Ascents compelling, and mostly convincing. His suggestion for the origin and purpose of Psalms 120-134 makes perfect sense and filled these Psalms with fresh significance. It’s stunning how a close reading of these Psalms can lead to not only the event for which these were composed, but even the day and hour of when these songs were first sung. Beyond the Ascents, one finds comprehensive information (with illustrations) about ancient worship, making this a useful resource for other texts referencing instruments and worship. This says nothing of the several rabbit trails, such as the discussions regarding the proper pronunciation of YHWH, or the current location of the ark (yes, you read correctly). As if the heart of the book were not interesting enough as it is, these diversions are fascinating and provocative. More than most I’ve read recently, The Songs of Ascents inspired numerous study detours before I could return to the book. Most importantly, through a detailed study of Psalms 120-134 and a survey of ancient Israelite worship, I can say I understand Scripture better. Small niggles, such as a lack of Scripture index, some noticeable typos, and common references to Psalms without specifying verse numbers, are unfortunate but hardly detrimental. The Songs of Ascents deserves a wide audience. Those interested in the Psalms and/or ancient music and liturgy, with a basic knowledge of Hebrew and a decent understanding of musical theory, will glean the most. However, I wish that all Christians would read this book as it opens up Biblical concepts and no doubt covers neglected blind spots in our understanding of ancient Israelite worship. Since the Psalms is one of the most popular books of the Bible, plumbing its depths is never a wasted opportunity.

String of Pearls: Healing from Sexual Abuse is a Christ-centered journey from pain to pearls to purpose for women who have been sexually abused. The author, Dr. Masica Jordan, was a victim of and now a victor over horrendous sexual abuse beginning in childhood. Dr. Jordan's String of Pearls (SOP) model for healing from sexual abuse takes the reader through a 54 day process that is divided into six sections. Each section is a stage in the process of healing sexual abuse that parallels the stages the oyster goes through in creating its pearl and how it is finally presented to the world in all its beauty. It all begins with an Intrusion, then the painful Recognition that this intrusion was a damaging violation and betrayal. This realization is followed by the Transformation of the harmful "irritant" into a precious pearl. Once the creation of the pearl is complete, it is time for Extraction, the opening up of the oyster and removing the pearl so that it can become a testimony of God's grace. The fifth stage is the Presentation of the pearl to the world in a jewelry setting or on a String of Pearls. Here Dr. Jordan tells the sexually abused woman, "Just as a pearl is used to make beautiful jewelry, so will you be able to use the pearls that come out of your trauma to help others." The final stage is the life-long process of Polishing this costly pearl, this "pearl of great price." Dr. Jordan is personally and painfully aware that the thought that something beautiful can be created out of something that was once so painful, damaging and debilitating may seem impossible, but she herself is now a beautiful String of Pearls that gives hope to others and this book is a powerful testimony to her faith that "with God, all things are possible."
