Christianity is about love ("God is love," "Jesus loves me"), and Christians are to love self, neighbors, even enemies. So, when people are asked what Christians are known for today, why is "love" not listed?
Tony Jones, popular theologian, speaker, blogger, and a founder of the emergent church movement, claims that much of the fault can be placed at the foot of the church's most common explanations of Jesus' crucifixion. While the Bible and Christian experience tell us the cross is all about love, today's most popular model for understanding the cross leaves us feeling guilty, ashamed, even unlovable, and thus disinclined to love others. How did the meaning of the cross change so radically from its biblical roots?
In Did God Kill Jesus? Jones takes us on an intriguing biblical and historical journey revealing just how this message of love was subverted and how it can be restored. Destined to Become A Contemporary Spiritual Classic By Klondike I am a Catholic priest in Utah and I found this book to provide excellent and profound insights into the mystery of the crucifixion of Jesus. It cuts across denominational lines appealing to both Catholics and Protestants and even non-believers. Professor Jones incorporates scripture and theological tradition to explain the crucifixion with new insights. He carefully lays out his argument by beginning with traditional theories of atonement spirituality and then lays out his argument that God's love for us is seen be God's willingness to enter fully and humbly into our brokenness and powerlessness so we can rise to new life. Not only will this be an invaluable tool in my preaching but in my personal spiritual life. A must read for any Christian wanting a deeper encounter with Christ.
22 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Just so so... By @BrianMacArevey I'm just not really sure who the intended audience of this book is. It's an average, popular level examination of a number of historical and modern atonement theories. Conservative proponents of Penal Substitution will be turned off before even getting to the other options (options that they really could use to hear!). Even though I am not a fan of PS, do not regard it as (on the whole, at least) "Biblically" based, and agree with many of the author's criticisms of it, I think that a good part of his argument against the model was a straw man. He certainly could have been more generous towards it in some respects. The view's adherents will hardly recognize the author's presentation, and thus will not take his (oft times valid) criticisms very seriously. If you are looking for a serious, in depth, scholarly look at atonement theology, this book will leave you disappointed as well. I'm sure that there are better resources. Perhaps it would be most useful in liberal, mainline churches, in particular those that reject notions of blood atonement as primitive and/or cruel. The author does a fine job of showing how other, non-retributive atonement models can be valuable to the church even in our "enlightened" era. All in all, I was hoping for more than I got.

By Rich Lewis "Across the theological spectrum, Christians struggle to explain how Jesus’ death worked on our behalf." What really happened on the cross? Tony reminds us that it is not necessarily one united voice. "What I mean is that the Bible and the Christian tradition are not unanimous about the reason that Jesus had to die and what his death accomplished."Tony begins the book discussing sacrifice, the Gospels' views on the death of Jesus and Paul's theology. In subsequent chapters, models that explain what happened on the cross are laid out: The Payment Model, The Victory Model, The Magnet Model, The Divinity Model to name a few.The last few chapters of the book were particularly interesting to me. Tony shares his views. Tony has spent much time meditating on the cross. I enjoyed hearing what his faith journey has revealed to him.I will admit, the Divinity model resonated with me. I am a centering prayer practitioner. I believe that each one of us is a divine being with a little "d". I believe that our humanity is best expressed when we connect to our inner divinity.After reading this book, for now, I have concluded that I am a blend of the Divinity model and the below key points from Tony's views."And the main message of both Father and Son is that they love us and want to be united with us." This ultimately is what the cross accomplishes. We are united with God and Jesus!"While we can only guess as to God’s motivation for creating us, we can conclude that God’s act of creation was an act of self-limiting love. God’s very first act was an act of humble love, an act in which God retreated and gave us room to live." This makes much sense for us as it does for Jesus. "God the Father withdrew enough to let Jesus follow his own fate." God withdraws and lets us live our life. I do this with my children. I love them by withdrawing and letting them live too."And when Jesus cried out from the cross in despair and anguish, God experienced something that God had never before experienced: God experienced the absence of God. God experienced atheism." As Tony mentions, God became fully human. God's Divinity took a backseat to His humanity. Note this in no way diminished God's humanity."God chose not to stop the execution, as we have seen, because God’s chosen deportment is one of self-limitation and humility." This is the ultimate act of love.I have to be honest. I never thought God could change. I never thought God could learn. After reading Tony's book, I believe God does both. "In Jesus, God moved from sympathy with the human condition to empathy. And God changed as a result." "We can say that in Jesus, God was experiencing something that God had not experienced before. To take it one step further, we can surmise that in Jesus, God was learning.""The beauty and power of the resurrection is that our friend didn’t just die on that cross. He lives on, offering us ongoing friendship. Even death couldn’t kill this friendship between God and humanity." Yes, we are given the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit continues to be present with us and within us. As Tony says, "God’s power is presence, quiet presence."Meditate on the cross. Keep asking questions. Why did Jesus die?
