Every pastor struggles with demands for his time, and how to determine priorities in ministry. Some choose to respond to the most urgent needs, while others seek a more balanced and intentional approach. But what determines these priorities? Where should a busy pastor look for wisdom in making decisions?

In the Pastor’s Ministry, pastor and author Brian Croft looks to the Scriptures to determine the top ten priorities for a faithful pastoral ministry. These biblically rooted responsibilities help pastors determine how to spend their time and with greater discernment respond to the demands of the church. Each of these priorities is rooted in a direct command of God’s Word, including:

  • Guarding the Truth
  • Preaching and Teaching the Word
  • Praying for the Flock
  • Setting an Example
  • Visiting the Sick
  • Comforting the Grieving
  • Caring for Widows
  • Confronting Sin
  • Encouraging the Faint-Hearted
  • Identifying and Training Other Leaders

To be successful and faithful in pastoral ministry, every pastor needs to understand these core callings and make them part of his regular practice.  These ten responsibilities guide how a pastor schedules his time, helping him to lay the foundation for a biblically faithful ministry in his church.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An Aid for the Pastor's "to-do" list By Erik Raymond Brian Croft has proven himself to be a shepherd of shepherds. I can attest to this personally as I've benefited from the Practical Shepherding website and seminars, and even phone conversations with him and my elder team. The book The Pastor's Ministry is like a roundtable discussion with Croft as he instructs on 10 priorities of a pastor. This is a much needed book for us "younger" reformed guys who may know theology like the back of our hand but could definitely benefit from deepening our wells in the practical side of pastoral care. Although I think every pastor should read the classic, The Christian Ministry by Charles Bridges, it's not necessarily a book I would hand a busy pastor to help him get back to the basics of shepherding. Croft's book, on the other hand, can be read in a few hours and bring immediate reform. He breaks the book into 3 parts:Foundation1. Guard the Truth2. Preach the Word3. Pray for the FlockFocus4. Set an Example5. Visit the Sick6. Comfort the Grieving7. Care for WidowsFaithfulness8. Confront Sin9. Encourage the Weaker Sheep10. Identify and Train LeadersAs a pastor I'm always trying to keep my job description at the front of my mind. What do I need to prioritize? What do I need to do? This is what Croft is after,My hope is that the power of God's word expounded in these pages will invigorate every pastor to see what God desires for his life and ministry and to better discern what he can do that will please the Chief Shepherd (pg. 18)Oftentimes you will read books on ministry for the "how to" aspect, but The Pastor's Ministry is a theologically dense, gospel rich and devotional work. You'll find biblical, systematic, historical, and pastoral theology interwoven in these pages. It is an edifying read.At the same time, the book is immensely practical. Croft details personal experiences that some young pastors don't have experience with until they are blind-sided by them. In particular, he writes about visiting a member in the hospital who's about to die, funeral preparations, dealing with a divisive man, what questions to ask when you're sitting in a widow's living room, how to comfort the grieving, how to encourage the weaker sheep who seem to have besetting sins. The chapter, Set an Example, has a subsection on spending time with your people. It's one thing to live out the Christian life but in order to actually serve as "an example" people have to be around you. They have to see you. This means the pastor can't be in his study 40 hours a week. He must disciple, visit, and fellowship with the rest of the church. This no doubt adds to the challenge of finding adequate time for study but it is essential if we want to be faithful shepherds. The chapter, Preach the Word, will doubtlessly put wind in the sails of any expositor who week after week wrings out the text while trusting in the power of God for fruit. The book ends with the priority to raise up the next generation of leaders within the church. He helpfully starts with the "how to" of identifying potential leaders. As pastors we want to get on with the training process, but he says it's just as important to spend time in the identification of potential leaders and lists 3 qualifications:1. One who is transformed by the Gospel.2. One who earnestly desires the work3. One who possesses Biblical character. It's easy to get excited when you get guys who want further training, but Croft highlights the value of evaluation on the front end. This is obvious in a scenario where expectations are high and resources are limited. The next process is to Test, Train, Affirm, and Send. While affirming the importance of seminary he does not negate the local church's role in identifying and training leaders. There is nothing earth shattering in these pages, but that's not what Croft is going for. He wants an easily digestible read that reminds pastors to not lose sight of the biblical mandate we have to shepherd the flock among us. With a consumer mindset dominating many in fad-driven churches it's easy for pastors to be drawn after the shiny wrappers of what is "in" or what is supposed to work. The Pastor's Ministry is a helpful guide that, if applied well, will certainly encourage and disciple a new generation of godly pastors.

The Pastor's Ministry: A Profoundly Simple Call to shepherd like the Good Shepherd By Amazon Customer The beauty, strength, and appeal of this book is that it was not written by someone who merely studies the pastorate from a safe distance. Rather, this work was written from the trenches and it bears the marks of a proven, tested, mature, sanctified, and affectionate shepherd. I remember approaching Brian as a new pastor with the question, "What do I do?" After reading this book, every pastor will not only know the answer to that question, but will be abundantly equipped to thrive. It is quite refreshing in a numbers-driven, program-centric, cutting edge, and rapidly shifting culture to read a book that captures the biblical heart of a shepherd and call pastors to that model.Especially helpful is the focus on caring for the weak in the church and training leaders. It is incredibly tempting to "shepherd" only those who can produce an immediate and equal payback while marginalizing those who can't. It is abundantly clear that Brian Croft sees the sick, the widow, the orphan, and the weak as not just a nice side ministry, but as the frontline of Gospel work. And, as a personal fruit of his pattern to train and disciple leaders in the church, Brian's desire to raise up the next generation of shepherds has been instrumental in our own church's desire to do the same.Whether you read "The Pastor's Ministry" or any other resource from Brian Croft's ministry Practical Shepherding, you will be blessed, equipped, and pointed faithfully to the True Shepherd who is the source of our life and godliness!

This is what I wrote: "What my friend Brian Croft says in this book should be so obvious that it barely needs saying. Tragically, these are the very principles and practices that are so often unknown or neglected and so quickly lost or forgotten. Whether you need instruction or correction, learning or reminding, Brian's gift for simple and clear communication of plain pastoral realities will clear your head, warm your heart, and strengthen your hands."If you are setting out in pastoral ministry, seeking a measure of clarity and focus as you wrestle with the work, or trying to clear away the bewildering mess of modern theories about pastoring and preaching, you will find in this simple introduction a refreshingly straightforward and simple outline of the work of ministry.

An uplifting study of the scientific evidence for the afterlife from an experienced anesthesiologist/intensive care physician • Details meticulously recorded and hospital-verified cases of near-death experiences • Cites scientific research on NDEs to refute the standard objections of doubters and materialists point by point • Explores out-of-body experiences, sessions with mediums, electronic communication with the deceased, and other signs from the afterlife Over the course of his 25-year career as an anesthesiologist and intensive care physician, Jean Jacques Charbonier, M.D., gathered hundreds of accounts of patients who returned from clinical death. Across all of these accounts--from patients with vastly different backgrounds--Dr. Charbonier found striking similarities as well as indisputable proof that these experiences were more than hallucinations. He surveyed other physicians, nurses, and professional caregivers and discovered that their patients described the same experiences as well as exhibited the same positive life transformations afterward. Igniting a scientific quest to learn more, he collected more accounts of near-death experiences as well as out-of-body experiences, attended dozens of sessions with mediums, experimented successfully with electronic communication with the deceased (EVP), interviewed hundreds of people who have cared for the dying, and gathered countless inexplicable stories of “signs” from the afterlife. With each experience he studied, he found himself more firmly believing in the survival of consciousness beyond death. Dr. Charbonier distills his findings into 7 reasons to believe in the afterlife, beginning with the more than 60 million people worldwide who have reported a transcendent afterlife experience. He refutes the standard objections of doubters and materialists point by point, citing scientific research on NDEs and the work of pioneers in the field of consciousness studies such as Raymond Moody and Pim van Lommel. Drawing on meticulously recorded and hospital-verified cases, Dr. Charbonier explains that we should not fear death for ourselves or our loved ones. By releasing our fear of death, we can properly prepare for “the final journey.” As those who have returned from death reveal, death is simply a transition and its lessons enable us to live more fully, peacefully, and happily in the now.

7 Reasons to Believe in the Afterlife: A Doctor Reviews the Case for Consciousness after Death, by Jean Jacques Charbonier M.D.

Review “This wonderful book provides detailed accounts of a wide variety of diverse phenomena that all point in one direction--toward the survival of the mind, with its personality and memories intact, after the change called death.” (Chris Carter, author of Science and the Afterlife Experience)“As a researcher in the field of near-death studies since 1978, I can say without hesitation that 7 Reasons to Believe in the Afterlife is exceptional. There is nothing else in the field quite like it.” (P. M. H. Atwater, L.H.D., author of 11 books on her research findings, including Near-Death Experien)“At last, summary of NDE research and phenomena from someone on the front line of life and death, an intensive care physician. This book is fascinating and scientifically sound while also being easy to read, personable, and humorous. It should become a classic.”  (Manjir Samanta-Laughton, M.D., award-winning international speaker and author of Punk Science and Th)“Dr. Charbonier teaches us that the brain is the link between the soul and the physical body and that it represents a set of structures optimized to create, record, and/or change patterns. When your brain dies your consciousness continues. Death is a transition to another life not an end in itself. When you are‘supposedly’ dead; you are more alive than before!” (The Rev. Karen E. Herrick, Ph.D., president of the Academy of Spirituality and Consciousness Studies)“7 Reasons to Believe in the Afterlife presents seven perfect reasons to believe and to know that you are more than your body. Charbonier’s book should be compulsory reading for every poor skeptic who still believes that he disappears when his brain stops.” (Ervin Laszlo, author of The Immortal Mind and Science and the Akashic Field)

About the Author Jean Jacques Charbonier, M.D., is a writer and lecturer whose 25 years as an anesthesiologist and intensive care physician led him to investigate near-death experience and the survival of consciousness after death. He lives in France.

The 2nd Good Reason A Case That Is Hard to Argue Against Pamela Reynold’s clinical death was medically induced by a surgical team whose goal was to remove a large aneurism lodged in her brain stem. Dr. Robert Spetzier hesitated a long time before undertaking this operation. The risks were enormous, and yet, if he had not proceeded with this intervention, the woman was likely to suffer an early death. Her vascular tumor was like a veritable time bomb that, as it enlarged, could explode at any moment. It is worth going into detail about the preparations for Pamela’s operation to illustrate the extent to which her brain was inactive at the moment when the vascular malformation was being removed. Hypothermic circulatory arrest is a technique used in extremely serious cases and only rarely, because many patients are unable to withstand such a disruption of blood flow and die before the intervention can be completed. The procedure involves the diversion of all blood flow from the area of the operation--the brain in Pamela’s case--to a circulation outside the patient’s body. The procedure must take place in a state of hypothermia to prevent formation of irreversible brain lesions that ordinarily would form within five minutes of stopping cerebral blood flow. Having anesthetized Pamela with a strong dose of barbiturates, the team diverted her blood flow outside her body while progressively lowering her temperature to the record level of 15.5°C (60°F). Once the blood flow had been cut off, the patient’s surgical table was tilted steeply to ensure that her brain would no longer contain a single drop of blood. As you might expect, the EEG quickly flatlined and stayed that way for almost an hour. The intervention took place without any major problems. Once the aneurism was removed, there was nothing more to do but wait for Pamela to awaken to determine her neurological state. The first surprise was that Pamela suffered virtually no aftereffect from this artificially induced cerebral death. The second surprise was even more stunning: her state of confirmed clinical death, controlled and remaining incontrovertible, in no way prevented her from observing everything that took place around her during the operation! Even with her brain completely taken offline, she was able to see, to hear, and to understand the smallest details of her surgery--a simply impossible feat if we believe that consciousness is fabricated by the brain. Here is her astounding account. I heard a mechanical noise, and it reminded me of a dentist’s drill. Then I just sort of popped out of the top of my head. In this state, I was able to see the situation very clearly. I remember that my doctor had an instrument in his hand that looked like the handle of my electric toothbrush. It had a dent in it, a groove at the top where the tip appeared to go into the handle, but when I saw it, there was no tip. I looked down and saw a box--it reminded me of my father’s box of tools when I was a child. At about the same moment that I saw the instrument, I heard a woman’s voice. I believe it was the voice of my cardiologist. She was saying that my veins and arteries were too small to extract the blood from them, and the surgeon told her to try the other side. While in a deep coma, Pamela was able to describe the surgical instrument used to operate on her. The same for the metal box of instruments that indeed looked like a toolbox but whose depth meant that it was impossible to see into unless you were well above the level at which the operation was taking place. Moreover, Pam was able to accurately report the conversation between the cardiologist and the surgeon when her blood vessels were too flat to introduce suction tubes into them. And all this while her brain was no longer functioning. That means this patient saw without her eyes, heard without her ears, and understood without her brain! How? The whole phenomenon is easier to believe if we accept that consciousness is found outside the body when the brain stops functioning. What the Detractors Say Pamela’s EEG was flat, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t an unmeasurable residual activity. False, because you must remember that the patient’s body temperature had been lowered to 60°F, and we know that in such a condition there is no chance of having the slightest biochemical exchange between two neurons. All brain functions are therefore out of the question. Pamela’s sensation of leaving the body arose from a stimulation of the right temporal lobe induced by a lack of oxygen in relation to the lowering of blood pressure in the cerebral arteries and caused by the anesthetic, the hypothermia, and the draining of blood from the brain. False, because a stimulation of the right temporal lobe would have been easily detected. We need to remember that the EEG remained totally flat for an hour and specifically during the time when the surgical instruments were taken from their container. The contents of the surgical tool case could have been seen by Pamela when the operating table was tilted up to reduce cerebral perfusion. False, because at the time the table was being tilted Pamela was already deeply asleep from the barbiturates and had her eyes closed, with adhesive bandages on her eyelids. Pamela could have heard the sounds of the tools that reminded her unconsciously of her father’s toolbox and an electric toothbrush. Upon her awakening, her brain could have then put together these images buried in her memory. In the same way she could have heard the conversation of the surgeon and the cardiologist. False, because the pulseless electrical activity (PEA) measured during Pamela’s operation was just as flat as her EEG. It was therefore impossible for her to perceive even the slightest sound at a cerebral level.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An interesting and thought provoking book for anyone who already believes in an afterlife. By Joseph J. Truncale I have been an atheist since I first began to question religious dogma and think for myself. As a scientific minded individual the title and subject of this book sparked (7 Reasons to believe in the afterlife: A doctor reviews the case for consciousness after death by Jean Jacques Charbonier, M.D. translated by Jack Cain) my interest. I have always been a truth and fact searcher and since this 144 page softcover book covers a subject that is both controversial and questionable scientifically I just had to read it.I did find the material very interesting and thought provoking at times. The cases he reports in this volume certainly present a lot of questions of whether or not our consciousness somehow survives when we are dead. This text is organized into seven chapters. The first chapter (The first good reason) the author gives a figure of “Sixty million people" who came back from the dead. The second good reason he presents a case that is hard to argue against. The third good reason is about death’s threshold. The fourth good reason the author explains about “a mind outside the body.” The fifth good reason covers perceptions connected to death. The sixth good reason deals with channeling. The last chapter or reason he explains the signs of the hereafter. This book is well-written and many of the author’s points sound compelling; nevertheless, there has never been real hard scientific proof that our consciousness actually survives when we die. The fact is this hypothesis of the author just creates more questions than it does answers. I did find the book an interesting read and those who are already believers in an afterlife will no doubt love this book.Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Never Trust a Politician: A critical review of politics and politicians).

For all choral directors and singers, 'David Howard's new book has as much to offer the professional musician as the amateur enthusiast. The style ... is refreshingly clear and direct ... an authoritative and brave publication. Talking helpfully about effective choral training requires logic and technical expertise every bit as much as it requires passion and musicianship. David Howard has all these qualities in abundance and his new book is a welcome addition to the choral bibliography', as reviewed by an international choral director in Choir & Organ, the flagship magazine of Rhinegold (the UK's leading publisher for music and the performing arts). Choral singing and healthy voice production is full of practical tips. The book distills years of the author's practical experience as a choral director and singer, and is uniquely informed throughout by his work as a leading voice scientist specialising in the health and acoustics of the human voice and of the performance space. In the Foreword by Ralph Allwood MBE, Director of the Rodolfus Choir, "Achieving an excellent performance is now within the grasp of all choirs ... David Howard's book brings that day closer". The book covers the anatomy of the human voice and how to sing healthily, warm up and cool down exercises, the effect of the environment and food and drink choices, acoustics of space and choral layout, pitch, good choral tuning and blend, common FAQs, and appendices including how hearing works, auditions and setting up a choir. This book is not only for the aspiring choral conductor, but refreshes and brings up to date the experienced choral director (Choir & Organ: "I tried out his suggestions at the earliest opportunity and found out they worked: Howard can indeed teach an old dog new tricks.") For choral singers, this book will hugely enrich their pleasure in singing and performance. They will learn how choral singing 'works', to look after their voices and how to sing so much better.

One of the best books in my choral library By Canipus I purchased this book because I wanted to understand better how to make a choir's sound more unified and natural. Howard brilliantly covers the subject of tonality and scales singing with and without an instrument. The exercises and tips regarding a healthy singing voice really work and I consider this practical help to be concise and relevant. Moreover, it is one of the few books that is a joy to read being light in style and beautifully illustrated in color. Excellent value. Highly recommended.

Espiritismo Criollo is not a New World tradition, nor is it a New Age Concept, it is not exclusive to Puerto Rico, and it was not founded by Kardecian Spiritualism. It has always been present on the island of Borinquen, always changing, evolving, and assimilating to the changes around it. Espiritismo Criollo Folclorica de ;a Mesa Blanca is just the Puerto Rican experience, how we as a culture, perceive the realm of Spirit. It is the tradition of the rural Jibaro folk, that has its roots in the blood and sweat of the Taino, African and Spanish people of the island of Boriken, also known as Puerto Rico.

Many spelling errors could use a better editor. Hope the author will continue to write and share to help preserve the tradition of espiritismo and sanse. Not really a handbook for developing mediums skills more about the spiritist cultural philosophy and religious practice.

A Spectators Review By Carolina Guerrero As a client of Sancista Brujo Luis and a follower on his Facebook page, I was intrigued to learn he had wrote "Luz y Progresso,"  a manuel for developing mediums. Although I am not a medium, or initiate of Espiritismo Criollo or Sanse, I have studied world religions, specifically in the Caribbean. For that reason,  I decided to purchase the book, to understand the basic construct of Espiritismo Criollo and how spectators such as myself can understand the basic premise of the religion. Luz y Progresso starts with an explanation of Allen Kardec and his role in Espiritismo criollo. Sancista Luis,  explains Kardec's role in the religion and how his doctrine was initiated, while at the same time explains how it applies in present day misas. As a person who has attended Spiritual Feast Day Misas, Coronaciones, and Levantamiento de Causas, I found this intriguing. For starters, I am better able to understand why Kardec's literary work is used at the beginning of each misa, regardless of the type of gathering. I always wondered why a European man's literary work was used in spiritual gatherings of indigenous a Taino and African belief system. Sancista explains the premise, regardless of the belief system the prayers are utilized to protect the mediums and guests from unwanted negative spirits, while only allowing spirits of the mediums own court and spirits of light, to participate in the gathering. I found this aspect intresting because it set a structure to the belief system, unifying the circle of mediums in a common goal that only spirits of light and elevated spritits, will participate in this ceremony. As a spectator in the misas, I observed that once the ceremony had commenced no spirits were allowed to mount until the prayers were finished. If a spirit tried to come through in a medium while the prayers were taking place,  the spirit was sometimes scolded, since the spirit should no better than to come through when the spiritual gathering was trying to cleanse the area of unwanted negative spirits, which the author describes as "causas" or "espritos atrasados" in his book.In sum, I found the book facinating. It helped me, a person whom is not initiated in Espiritismo Criollo,  understand the basic premise of the brief system and the important symbology used as a vehicle to communicate with the spirit realm, from the use of water, which Sancista describes as the bóveda to the use of tarot cards, while also using a medium as a "caballo", allowing the spirit to use his/her body to provide messages. I've had the  opportunity to witness all these things as a client and when participating in misas. The book gave me a better understanding of the process,  since I'm most circumstances I was just interested in hearing the messages from the spirits were delivering to the participants. I highly recommend this book to developing mediums,  as well as those studying anthropology, world religions, and for those like myself, occasionally assisting  misas as a spectator.

Confucius is perhaps the most important philosopher in history. Today, his teachings shape the daily lives of more than 1.6 billion people. Throughout East Asia, Confucius’s influence can be seen in everything from business practices and family relationships to educational standards and government policies. Even as western ideas from Christianity to Communism have bombarded the region, Confucius’s doctrine has endured as the foundation of East Asian culture. It is impossible to understand East Asia, journalist Michael Schuman demonstrates, without first engaging with Confucius and his vast legacy.Confucius created a worldview that is in many respects distinct from, and in conflict with, Western culture. As Schuman shows, the way that East Asian companies are managed, how family members interact with each other, and how governments see their role in society all differ from the norm in the West due to Confucius’s lasting impact. Confucius has been credited with giving East Asia an advantage in today’s world, by instilling its people with a devotion to learning, and propelling the region’s economic progress. Still, the sage has also been highly controversial. For the past 100 years, East Asians have questioned if the region can become truly modern while Confucius remains so entrenched in society. He has been criticized for causing the inequality of women, promoting authoritarian regimes, and suppressing human rights.Despite these debates, East Asians today are turning to Confucius to help them solve the ills of modern life more than they have in a century. As a wealthy and increasingly powerful Asia rises on the world stage, Confucius, too, will command a more prominent place in global culture.Touching on philosophy, history, and current affairs, Confucius tells the vivid, dramatic story of the enigmatic philosopher whose ideas remain at the heart of East Asian civilization.

Confucius: And the World He Created, by Michael Schuman

Review Winner of the 2015 Nautilus Book Award winner in the Religion/Spirituality of Eastern Thought categoryWall Street Journal“Lively and well-rounded.... A very satisfying account.”Asian Review of Books“Wonderful.... No reader could do better than Michael Schuman as a contemporary guide to Confucius. Confucius emerges from these pages a real human figure, not an icon from the past, and his philosophy is attractive and alive, too.”Literary Review (UK)“Schuman has done a difficult thing. He has produced a book introducing new readers to a great subject in plainly written English, while explaining with considerable force the ideas related to that subject, which happens to be one on which academics and politicians hold strongly differing opinions. [An] enlightening and well-balanced book.”Open Letters Monthly“It’s not easy to write well for non-experts about a deeply foreign system of thought. It’s virtually impossible to do so fairly when that system has developed over millennia and continues to animate people increasingly feared as civilizational rivals. But Michael Schuman has done it, telling the story of Confucianism, explaining what makes it unique, and considering with refreshing fairness the challenge it poses to the complacency of western culture — all in a short book composed with the vivid energy of journalism.”Publishers Weekly“Part biography, part history, and part analysis of Chinese current affairs, this remarkable book…traces the lasting influence of Confucianism in China, despite enormous political and social changes in Chinese society.”Library Journal“A great read for anyone interested in Confucius, philosophy, or culture in East Asia.”NPR’s International Desk’s list of Favorite Reads of 2015“The book has an interesting structure that looks at Confucius from various angles — as a man, a sage, a chauvinist, a businessman — that allows Schuman to track Confucius' life, teachings and relevance over time. Schuman sprinkles easily digestible anecdotes throughout the book including original reporting and observations of his own.”O.A. Westad, author of Restless Empire: China and the World since 1750“A fine account of Confucius’ world, and of the use and misuse of the Master’s thinking throughout Chinese history. Whoever wants to understand China must start with Master Kong!”Jon Huntsman, former United States Ambassador to China“Michael Schuman’s book is nothing short of indispensable reading for anyone trying to comprehend the local, regional, and global impact of China and its motivating philosophical underpinnings. Today’s China is an extension of its past and Confucius’ guiding influence remains at its core. China is incomprehensible without this intellectual framework. To that end, Confucius is a generationally significant contribution.”Evan Osnos, author of Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth, and Faith in the New China“To understand the philosophical heart of East Asia, read this book. In his vibrant and engaging portrait of Confucius, Michael Schuman gives us the sage as we've never seen him, undeniably shaping modern politics, business, and private life for a quarter of humanity. It is a marvel of intelligent research, great reporting, and clear analysis.”John Negroponte, former Director of National Intelligence“Michael Schuman skillfully traces the ebb and flow of Confucius’ influence through the millennia. He also reflects on the enduring impact of Confucian thought on the lives of millions of contemporary East Asians. As the United States’ attention shifts increasingly towards that part of the world, Schuman’s book enriches our understanding of the values underlying that dynamic region.”Christopher Patten, former British Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Hong Kong“This fascinating book rescues Confucius, his teaching, and his wisdom from the authoritarian embrace which has so distorted what we should learn from the Analects. Michael Schuman helps us to better understand Asia’s past, present, and indeed future.”

About the Author Michael Schuman has been a correspondent for Time and the Wall Street Journal, covering Asia and the global economy. The author of The Miracle: The Epic Story of Asia’s Quest for Wealth, Schuman lives in Beijing, China.

Essential to Understanding the Recent Successes of Far Eastern Nations By Loyd Eskildson Confucian societies have arguably been the world's most successful since WWII. Confucian values such as thrift and a devotion to hard work have gotten much of the credit. However, the truth is much more complex - for example, East Asian counties have further benefited from exceptionally strong governance compared to most developing nations, partly due to a Confucian-inspired preference among the most talented to seek public service. Confucius has also been blamed for suppressing women, stifling innovation by junior staffers (suppressed by top-down decision-making), impoverishing peasant, encouraging despotism, and sparking financial crises. Reality, Confucianism has evolved over the 1,500+ years since its originator died.Born in the sixth-century B.C., Confucius considered filial piety the foundation of a peaceful and prosperous society. Per Confucius, there is no more important relationship within society than that between father and son. His adherents contend that the morals and rules of propriety learned within the family are easily transferable to society at large. Confucius never claimed his teachings were divinely revealed, never wove tales about the creation of the world or the origins of man, nor did he speculate on the afterlife. His goals was to teach people to be virtuous and put that virtue to use building a better society. The benefit received for doing a good deed was the knowledge that you'd behaved honorably and perhaps done some good for the world.Per Confucius, a minister in a government should administer his responsibilities wisely and serve his ruler loyally. If that minister shirked his responsibilities, acted for personal gain rather than public good, or usurped the power of the sovereign, he was not living up to his duties and could not be called a minister. Citizens have responsibilities as well - to pay taxes, serve in the armed forces, and be respectful to the sovereign. If they did not, they were not proper citizens. The ruler was supposed to be benevolent (respectful, tolerant, trustworthy, generous, and quick) to the people, governing in their best interests and caring for their welfare. If the ruler lazed about all day in luxury, amassed great wealth at the expense of the common man, or ignored affairs of state, then he too had no right to his title. The leader should encourage the people to work hard by setting an example himself.'Do not impose on others what you yourself would not desire' - a Confucian statement predating the Golden Rule by hundreds of years.Dong Zhongshu (a disciple) recommended that the emperor establish a national university to train scholars to serve in the bureaucracy. In 136 B.C., study of the Five Classics became a prerequisite for attaining official academic posts, and in 124 B.C. an Imperial University was opened to train civil servants with a curriculum based on the classics. In 960, the Song dynasty took hold of China and its leaders embraced Confucianism with a fervor unmatched by prior rulers. The new emperor (19 years old) reinstated civil service exams and greatly expanded their scope and influence. They became the primary route to lucrative and respected government service. Books became more widely available - moveable type was invented in 11th century China) and an authoritative compilation of Confucian classics became available in 1011. This did not, however, preclude debate about optimal public policies.Much of the 1800's brought challenges from belligerent foreigners. China had lost two Opium Wars with Great Britain - the first, in the early 1840's, cost it Hong Kong and the second resulted in the looting and burning of the Summer Palace outside Beijing. France, Germany, Russia, and especially Japan had also humiliated China - the latter cost China its rule over Korea. At the same time, European missionaries were scouring the countryside for converts and criticizing Chinese traditions. Confucius came in for considerable blame - eg. discouraging the educated from probing math and the sciences - instead focusing on memorizing Confucian doctrine. (This begs the question of 'Why did Chinese science previously lead the world, Confucius notwithstanding?') Others contended China needed more Confucius-type thinking.Regardless, the Qing Dynasty collapsed in 1911, plunging China into chaos for nearly 70 years and costing the lives of tens of millions. Discontent over China's failure to prevent Britain and others from awarding Japan rights over Chinese territory previously held by Germany as part of the Treaty of Versailles brought even more antagonism towards Confucianism; Mao Zedong imbibed this anti-Confucianism and declared war on Confucianism after founding the People's Republic in 1949. Books were burned, temples and monuments burned and torn down, scholars driven out of colleges, and eventually all formal education ceased during the Cultural Revolution. Confucianism, however, lived on in the homes of China's populace.Filial obligations were a never-ending pursuit that shaped most major family decisions, aided by eg. 'The Book of Rites' and popularized short fables. After Mao, Confucianism was also used by leaders to engender loyalty to the state. Some Asian writers blame filial piety as one reason Asians in the U.S. have generally failed to grasped leadership positions. A 2013 of China's 185 million citizens over age 60 found that while only 38% were living with their children (the traditional mode) and far fewer marriages were arranged by parents, nearly 89% of the elderly in China requiring assistance in daily activities received that from family members, and 47% not living with their children still received financial support from them.Asia's obsession with education comes directly from Confucius. His ideas on the importance of learning may be the only aspect of his teachings that have survived largely unscathed - because of the positive influence those ideas have had. Top performers in Asian schools are the most admired by other children. Per Confucius, 'To love benevolence without loving learning is liable to lead to follishness. To love trustworthiness without loving learning is liable to lead to harmful behavior.'Confucius believed that the first place to find fault was within oneself. Confucius also contended that everyone was deserving of education and the opportunities that came with it. Society ought to be a meritocracy. (Except for women - they weren't even admitted to the civil-service exams.)Families in East Asia today are often measured by which university accepts their children. Critics contend there is too much emphasis on memorization, not enough on creativity. Confucius taught via debate, and criticized those who slavishly followed whatever he said.Confucius believed that ensuring prosperity was one of the primary tasks of any good government. ('How could a person remain ethical if he was starving?') He was also biased against merchants - seeing them as simply selling what others had created.Lee Kuan Yew (former Singapore P.M.) contends that because of Confucian values, East Asians place the interests of the community over those of individuals, and that a Confucian society does not require detailed laws - underlying principles can guide. He also contends that 'The weakness of democracy is the assumption that all men are equal and capable of equal contribution to the common good.' Lee further asserts that when the rights of the individual are put above all, the greater community suffers, that the individualistic pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness has degenerated into moral decadence and selfishness in America. 'The success of a government depends not on its process or structure, but on the individuals running it. We decide what is right. Never mind what the people think.

Ever since, I’ve been trying to figure out Chinese culture. One thing that always struck me was that Confucius was behind a lot of it. I never was interested enough to read the Analects, but now it looks like I don’t have to. This book does a wonderful job confirming my thoughts, and explaining exactly how, why, and to what degree Confucius became so central. The book also does an excellent job showing the strengths of Confucianism (the emphasis on education, say) and the weaknesses (for example, the hierarchical, rather subservient nature of society). It also, though, does a wonderful job showing how Confucianism changed over the years, usually to support the next ruling clique to come along. Schuman points out, though, that the essentials of Confucianism remain the same, and are much more sophisticated and worthy of study. There are plenty of books out there that purport to explain Chinese culture. Some are better than others, but I would probably recommend this book as the place to go.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The Malleability of Confucianism By Amazon Customer It took me a while to warm to this book. Schuman has been a foreign correspondent for Time Magazine and the WSJ, and his book is written in Time's breezy, informal style. "Confucius" is a bit repetitive and can feel superficial, but ends up covering its subject pretty well. Part of my initial frustration was the lack of any clear definition in the book of the Confucian creed is. The reason for this, I gradually realized, is that no definitive, canonical statement of such a creed exists. The Analects, apparently, is the closest there is. Given the somewhat amorphous and fragmented nature of Confucius’ written legacy, Schuman does a good job showing how his teachings have been reinterpreted and manipulated in different historical eras. His most interesting chapters, I thought, are those showing the continuing influence of Confucian values in east Asia today: in business, in politics, in education, in family values. The core concepts of Confucianism, as I understand them from this book are: the family as the institution core of society, and a strongly hierarchical (and patriarchal) view of the ideal social order, based on interlocking sets of reciprocal obligations between superiors and subordinates. Schuman’s account frequently reminded me of Plato’s Republic, not least in that the Confucian model shares the same weakness: success of the system depends almost entirely upon getting the right “guardian/rulers” on top. If not, and you end up with a “bad emperor” (or bad father, husband, CEO, etc.), and there is no self-correcting mechanism. Or as Schuman puts it: “the mortal flaw in (Confucius’) teachings can be found…in his undying and ultimately misplaced faith in humanity.”

I actually read this book while on a beautiful beach. Great book to remind you that we all have inner guidance. One of my favorite lines? ' Don't compare your insides to someone else's outsides' and ' your mistakes do not trap you, but serve as kindling for your authenticity'. While reading many of the genius themes, I felt so free, inspired and hopeful for myself for the future. Elisa Romeo is someone that really gets it. So many themes just comforted me to no end. Reading it felt like you had either a cozy warm blanket with dogs snuggling next to you or being surrounded by a community of loving, like minded individuals! The themes of death wish vs. life wish - so relevant. Even just the awareness that knowing we all struggle with these in our human bodies, bring comfort and allows one to them be easy on themselves. Loved the bookending chapter, spiritual temper tantrums, dark night of the soul, death wish vs. life wish, spiritual judgement - I think that every human being on this planet can relate to (and some animals!) these ideas! Many beautiful lines pop out right to connect to your heart as do all the quotes in the beginning of the chapters. I read it quickly and plan to re-read it again. My favorites were Elias's real life vignettes!Have read some of her recommended books, but excited to read some more, including Thomas Moore's books.I journaled a ton with this book and after I finished it, felt inspired to ask the most silly questions, and I always got the right answers! Silly things like ' should I go to soccer practice?' 'Why do I do such and such'? I now feel more connected with my soul, and can gain wonderful, clear practical information from Her.My friend that was with me on the beach even noticed how much I was journaling as well! I highly recommend it, as it really puts you in the present moment and you can feel your Soul as writing away.

I never thought of looking to 'Meet' my Soul, new concept. However, it does make sense on how to stay grounded sometimes and not live totally in the fluff fluff land of Angels all the time. Who would know you better than your own soul? There are very good exercises and tools to use, such as the Mirror Soul gazing.GREAT BOOK!

Elisa Romeo beautifully illustrates how to take spiritual ownership and navigate within yourself so that you understand the difference between soul voice and ego voice. This has been a challenge for me for years but thorough the meditations and inquiry exercises in this book I now understand how to distinguish between the two and can choose to follow my soul voice - a very empowering and beautiful experience. This book is a must for anyone desiring clarity and divine guidance through spiritual ownership and listening to their soul.

The ancient Chinese were profoundly influenced by the Sun, Moon and stars, making persistent efforts to mirror astral phenomena in shaping their civilization. In this pioneering text, David W. Pankenier introduces readers to a seriously understudied field, illustrating how astronomy shaped the culture of China from the very beginning and how it influenced areas as disparate as art, architecture, calendrical science, myth, technology, and political and military decision-making. As elsewhere in the ancient world, there was no positive distinction between astronomy and astrology in ancient China, and so astrology, or more precisely, astral omenology, is a principal focus of the book. Drawing on a broad range of sources, including archaeological discoveries, classical texts, inscriptions and paleography, this thought-provoking book documents the role of astronomical phenomena in the development of the 'Celestial Empire' from the late Neolithic through the late imperial period.

Astrology and Cosmology in Early China: Conforming Earth to Heaven, by David W. Pankenier

Review 'David Pankenier's examination of traditional cosmology and astrology in China is the authoritative work in the area. It draws on the latest evidence and most recent scholarship to make a compelling case for the central role of the sky in Chinese religion, philosophy, political thought and social organisation. This book makes a significant contribution both to our understanding of Chinese history and culture, and to the wider history of ideas.' Nicholas Campion, Sophia Centre for the Study of Cosmology in Culture, University of Wales, Trinity Saint David'Professor Pankenier has made many important discoveries about the sky in Early China ... This is a series of admirably ingenious probes into not only the darkness of the sky above, but also that of the ancient mind. Hardly any other book has disclosed nearly as many secrets about early human history as does [this] volume, which the specialists will find deeply educating, even entertaining, and everyone else will find exciting.' Li Feng, Columbia University, New York'Astrology and Cosmology in Early China is a unique and profoundly learned contribution to early Chinese intellectual history, religion, and science - nothing like it exists in any Western language. The comprehensive sum of the author's deep research over three decades, the book offers a magisterial cultural history of what the astral order meant to the ancient Chinese, how they explored it, and how they interpreted it in political and religious terms. With his broad comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives, authoritative command of the ancient sources, and bold and imaginative interpretations, Pankenier has given us a true intellectual thrill, and one of far-reaching consequences for an entire range of fields both within and beyond the study of China.' Martin Kern, Princeton University, New Jersey'Using an enormous wealth of archaeological discoveries, inscriptions, linguistic evidence, religious rites and historical sources, the author has succeeded in recovering ancient Chinese astronomical concepts and practices of paramount importance for our understanding of the formation of the Chinese civilization. A brilliant achievement!' Göran Malmqvist, Professor Emeritus, Stockholm University, and Member, Swedish Academy'A tremendously exciting book that powerfully demonstrates the extraordinary importance of astronomy in early China. David Pankenier argues that significant aspects of early Chinese civilization - including highly influential notions such as the Mandate of Heaven - were based upon astronomical views. The work also helps to bring early Chinese astronomy into the larger comparative study of archaeoastronomy.' Michael Puett, Harvard University, Massachusetts'Professor David Pankenier is a renowned sinologist who is very well known to Chinese academics. For many years his research has focused on texts and artifacts connected with ancient Chinese astronomy, yielding outstanding achievements and many profound insights ... From Pankenier's book the reader can acquire a full appreciation of the special characteristics of ancient Chinese ways of thinking. He ingeniously combines in-depth analysis, discussion, and interpretation of ancient astronomy, in particular the nature and significance of astrology, to explore and integrate intellectual history and astronomy with political and military history, research from which scholars of many disciplines will derive benefit.' Li Xueqin, Director, Institute of History, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing, and Director, Institute of Sinology, Tsinghua University

About the Author David W. Pankenier is Professor of Chinese at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania. His current research interests range from the history of ideas in early China, to archaeoastronomy and cultural astronomy. He is particularly interested in the connection between rare astronomical phenomena and epoch-making political and military events in ancient China.

An impressive and innovative book By Gill Zukovskis This impressive and innovative book offers a detailed topical treatment of how the heavens have played a key role in shaping the culture and civilization of China in ancient and historical periods. The author David Pankenier is Professor of Chinese at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania and he has applied his specialist expertise in Sinology and long-term interests in cultural astronomy and archaeoastronomy to offer both broad sweeps and fine brush-strokes in an illuminating series of case studies of specific events and concepts. His writing combines scholarly authority with a clear style accessible to general readers, though naturally aimed primarily at those with more serious interests in this area. The material is based on thirty years of ongoing research, extending some information appearing previously in journal articles and adding many new insights. It follows an academic format, with copious footnotes and a helpful list of References, an Index and a Glossary of Chinese characters, as well as a wealth of illustrations, including sky charts, ground maps, photographs and drawings. The Introduction gives brief outlines on general and Chinese archaeoastronomy and for the fourteen chapters, while the Appendix offers a valuable new annotated translation of the major astronomical-astrological text known as the `Treatise on the Celestial Offices' (written in c.100 BCE by China's most famous historian Sima Qian and his father).Among the key themes discussed are: much earlier dating for the origins of traditional correlative cosmology and astrology than the general scholarly consensus; the significance of multiple planet groupings in political and military affairs, including a detailed comparison between European and Chinese interpretations of such an event in AD 1524; a study of astronomical observation at the third millennium BCE site at Taosi; calendrical and cultural functions of the Milky Way and the asterism known as the Cerulean Dragon; the importance of polar and cardinal alignments and suggested ancient methods to establish them; and links between skywatching and the evolution of the Chinese script.Creative, exciting hypotheses are supported throughout by detailed analysis of textual, epigraphic, archaeological and astronomical evidence as well as relevant theoretical models. Although comparative approaches are not the book's chief aim, points of similarity and difference with other ancient civilizations are mentioned in relevant instances, along with discussions of the views of other writers in the field. This is a well-bound volume, printed on high quality paper. Its compact size makes it a pleasure to handle, for browsing and detailed study. The standard of editing and proof reading is high, as befits a major academic publisher, with commendably few typographical errors and lapses, especially given the large quantity of technical vocabulary. In short, like the rich brocade adorning the cover, this valuable book contains a treasure trove of interwoven data and ideas threading through the wide-ranging chapters in recurrent motifs, and it looks set to serve as a fruitful reference source for years to come. For a more detailed review, see [...]

Note: Problems on the Kindle edition with display of archaic Chinese characters. Also graphics and conventional Chinese characters show as greyed out, so print book is recommended.

Galatians by George R. Brunk III tracks the important role that this epistle of the apostle Paul played in Christianity s shift from being a messianic sect within Judaism to a Gentile-dominated religious movement. As a sustained defense of Jesus Christ as the center of faith, the full unity and equality of Christ's followers, and the Spirit's empowerment in the life of the believer, Galatians holds both world-changing and personally transforming power for the contemporary church. Brunk's commentary, an important contribution to biblical studies, includes historical and cultural background; shares necessary theological, sociological, and ethical meanings; and, in general, makes the rough places plain. Galatians is the twenty-eighth volume in the Believers Church Bible Commentary series. Accessible to lay readers, useful in preaching and pastoral care, helpful for Bible study groups and Sunday school teachers, while academically sound, the commentary foregrounds an Anabaptist reading of Scripture.

Review "The fact that your vision is thirty years ahead is indicative of how I see the breaking down of walls between high-end academic work and the work of the church. The essays assist in understanding background and theology of the texts and are enormously helpful." -- Gordon Brown "Northern Ireland"

Loving an Addict: Gospel Reflections of Hope and Healing, by Alyssa Phillips

Review Within these meditations, Alyssa Phillips s devotional use of scripture combined with immersion in 12-step recovery bridge a significant gap for Christians seeking to draw strength from both dimensions of God s loving activity. She writes authentically and openly of the experience that besets addicts and their families, balanced by the strength and hope found in the Gospels and practiced in recovery. These words exemplify how the darkness of one s past can be redeemed as a resource for helping others. The Rev. Stuart H. Hoke, Th.D. Adjunct Professor of Pastoral Theology General Theological Seminary, New York City --The Rev. Stuart H. Hoke

About the Author Alyssa Phillips is a pseudonym. The author s personal experience with addiction has motivated her to work with the homeless and befriend addicted men and women.

I say this both as a christian and as an addiction's counselor for over 20 years. From my years of experience I have found that the ineffective use of one's higher power as being the most common and significant impediment to the healing and growth process of alcoholics and their loved ones. It is one thing to say, "I have a higher power," and quite another thing to say, "My higher power protects me, guides me and enriches me every day in so many ways." Alyssa does a masterful job through her own journey, her own discovery in learning how to effectively use her higher power in her own life. Readers will appreciate Alyssa's understanding of bible scriptures and through her own story, helping us to integrate their meaning and lessons in helping us to better deal with our alcoholic or addict as well as how to more effectively use our higher power in all aspects of our lives. In all of this, Alyssa has blessed us with this important book, to own and to bestow onto others as a most meaningful and helpful gift.Alan Burt

What a powerful message within the pages of this easy to read collection of reflections! I love it!. This book takes a refreshingly unique look at the topic of loving an addict by drawing its reader to receive the grace and help they themselves need from God while loving the alcoholic or addict in their lives. Alyssa has been beautifully transparent and genuine in her desire to understand her husband, his addiction and the impact that addiction has upon her own life. She has skillfully shared lessons learned from the pages of scripture that have empowered her to grow in the grace and knowledge of the God who loves them both. This book is a must read for anyone that has ever loved someone bound by an addiction- a mother, father, sister, brother, spouse, friend, self, anyone - who wants to live a life free of the turmoil that often exist in such relationships..

Loving an Addict is a perfect combination of Biblical truths and inspiration from Alanon By Christine Banks Loving an Addict is a perfect combination of Biblical truths and inspiration from Alanon. As a member of Alanon for over five years, I have always struggled with the fact that although it has a "spiritual" component, it isn't Christ-centered. Alyssa marries the Alanon concepts with Christ-centered truths for a truly inspiring message! Its devotional-style reading allows the reader to digest various topics in manageable chunks while meditating on scripture. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has struggled, or is struggling, with loving an addict. I have loved an addict for the past fifteen years; and although my marriage has ended, this book has helped me to look back upon my marriage with a new perspective that has brought healing to my heart and hope for my future.
