About the Author Lauren Scruggs is the founder and editor of LOLO Magazine, an online lifestyle hub that unites all things fashion, beauty, and health. Lauren was born in Redondo Beach and raised in Dallas, so you can call her a California girl whose roots are deep in the heart of Texas. Celebrating true beauty in an airbrushed world By writer@heart “Your Beautiful Heart: 31 Reflections on love, faith, friendship and becoming a girl who shines” is a beautiful, real-life story equipped with a timeless message for females both young and old. A book worth every bit of a five-star rating, fortified with a message that’s worth sharing. God’s glory which shines through Lauren’s story has the power to uplift, educate and inspire the world.Just within the first few pages of the Introduction called “An Imprint on Your Heart”, the author Lauren Scruggs identifies a lie and a truth. The lie is from the world of fashion and beauty which tells young women everywhere that “A certain kind of physical appearance equals beauty.” As the reader turns the page, the author refutes that lie with a timeless truth: “God’s love in your heart is your beauty” and the heart of Lauren’s message is laid bare. “This book is about how God’s love makes a person breathtaking,” she says.In “Your Seeking Heart”, the opening chapter for her book, Lauren spends two pages pointing out that nowhere in the Bible will you find much attention paid to a person’s looks. No deep description of a person’s outward appearance is mentioned. “And even Jesus, the pivotal person in the whole Bible, is never described in terms of his appearance,” Lauren writes. Therein the author explains her point for I believe the entire book. The point is if looks are not highlighted or touted as important in the Bible then why are we so focused on it in our modern day world?Lauren drives her message home in the section of the book titled “Your Changed Heart” with a question posed on page 55 of chapter 07 which is called “A Heart that Knows.” Lauren asks the reader, “Have you ever thought of the Bible as God’s voice? As him coming down to speak to you and me and everyone?” Following her on the next few pages, Lauren proves why the thought behind her question is true and on page 57 she so perfectly ends that conversation with this quote, “A beautiful heart wants to know God and gets to know him through his Word.” It becomes clear to the reader as they flip through the pages of Lauren’s book that she not only knows God but loves Him and endeavors to share His love with the world. Such is the story of a person’s life transformed by God’s love. It is a testimony of how God can always turn broken into beautiful and that with God, no pain in your life is without purpose.God used Lauren’s pain in losing her left eye and hand to launch a ministry. He worked through Lauren to not only bring healing to her own heart but to give Lauren a mission of spreading His love, joy and peace to a broken world through the sharing of her story. God continues to use Lauren as an instrument of His peace through her ministry of writing books and reaching people through her work in the fashion, print media and publishing industries. But God did not stop there! Lauren’s unique story changed her life in a special way when it led to her being interviewed on E! Your Beautiful Heart By L123 Ever since I read Still Lolo, that told the story of Lauren Scruggs, and the airplane accident she was involved in, I was interested in reading books she may release in the future. Added to that is the fact that she recently married Jason Kennedy who I really enjoy watching on ENews, since I always like seeing young Christians making a name for themselves in Hollywood.As soon as I heard about this book releasing, I was excited to get the chance to read her new book, Your Beautiful Heart: 31 Reflections on Love, Faith, Friendship, and Becoming a Girl who Shines. The book is set up like a devotional that can be read just one chapter at a time, or you can read an entire section at a time. There are six main sections of the book, including Your Seeking Heart, Your Changed Heart, Your Obedient Heart, Your Heart for Others, Your Distinctive Heart, and Your Heart Looking Forward. Within these sections, there are about 4-8 chapters that fit into the specific categories. The chapters begin with a short story that connects to a Biblical lesson we can learn, or a Bible story. The chapters end with Discussion Starters that contain Bible verses that tie in to what has just been read.I am sure some of my younger cousins would love to have this type of devotional to read, and I can’t wait to get a few of these to buy for them for their upcoming birthdays! I am a mother of four daughters. We live in a world that is very hard to navigate through as young woman. I have read "your beautiful heart" with my daughters and am ordering copies to study with my youth, small group girls. Such a wonderful reminder of who we are in Christ and where true beauty lies. I highly recommend this book! It would make an exceptional study for woman of all ages. I am big fan of Lisa Velthouse. I also recommend "Saving my first kiss".

I highly recommend this book (and this series) to anyone who preaches or teaches in a church or bible study setting. A Commentary for the Lay By Dr Conrade Yap There is always a special need for commentaries that laypersons, especially teachers of Bible classes need. Not many people have the time and money to go through intense seminary education or Bible training. Without a proper guide, it is easy to let subjective opinions on Bible passages lead the way. This is not good for students. It is also not good for the Church. Without oversimplifying things, Churches still need Bible resources that are easy to refer to but also dependable and faithful to the biblical contexts. Using the New Revised Standard Version Bible, the two letters written by Paul to the Corinthian Church are examined in this book and presented to the public for easy reference and reading. The usual stuff is there. There is the overall map of the region the Apostle Paul writes to. There is the introductory material to give readers a short description of the contexts, the theological themes, the major issues of the day, the authorship and audience, and the unique place of Corinth. This is followed by a map to outline how the letter develops.A) Overall SummaryThe two letters of Paul are not only described in themselves, they are also contrasted with each other to highlight the same author but different emotional conditions. While the former is one of firmness, the latter reflects a brokenness. This can be seen as a metaphor for Christian ministry. There are ups and downs, good times and bad, pleasant moments and unpleasant circumstances. It is all part and parcel of the work. In expressing these in letter format, we learn about how human Paul is and how much the gospel plays in his own life and teaching. In it, he is not only a theologian and a pastor, but also a pilgrim and friend.Calling it one of the easiest of Paul's letters to outline, First Corinthians is mapped according to three major "People" sections. Sometimes, the commentary reads like a sermon in which the author attempts to strike a mental conversation with the reader. The descriptions are relatively brief and to the point, without theological jargon or much Greek grammatical references. With a systematic point by point structure, it is very easy to follow Proctor's arguments.Structure wise, this book follows the passage by passage format instead of the conventional verse by verse manner. This not only saves space but allows the author to summarize the whole passage in his own way. This frees him from being stuck at a verse by verse method that can sometimes appear disjointed. That said, the chosen pericope can be a limitation itself, so readers will benefit if they read the actual Biblical texts prior to referring to this commentary.The copy I had has a distinct lack of cross references to other scholarship material and theological resources for further research. Perhaps, these will be included in the final version but readers will need to find out for themselves. Proctor does a good job in training readers how to stay with the text and not be too quick to walk away from it. He reminds readers to see from two angles. The first angle is how the Corinthians would read the letter and the second is what it means for us in our modern era. Believing the Bible speaks to us today, Proctor provides challenges to both our vertical relationships to God as well as our horizontal relationships to one another. He brings in references to historical creeds. He uses imagery brilliantly when he talks about leadership matters in the Church, that leadership is like being farmers and gardeners who take care of the land and garden without lording over them. It requires the virtues of patience, perseverance, and passion. Paul's openness is made bare often and this commentary pays special attention to Paul not only as a theologian but more so as a pastor.All in all, this is a passable commentary and should appeal to Bible study leaders and Sunday school teachers. By RHH Christian Exegesis of the Qur’an was written to answer the questions whether Christians are justified in making a positive apologetic use of the Qur’an in Arabic speaking context (1), and what western evangelicals can learn about the apologetic use of the Qur’an in medieval and contemporary Arabic Christian theological writings (31). Bridger argues that Arabic-speaking Christians are justified in using the Qur’an in communicating the Biblical doctrines to Muslims, he stated his Statement of Thesis as follows "This book argues that in Arabic-speaking Muslim milieus Christians are justified in making positive apologetic use of qur’anic points of contact in religious discourse about the Bible and Christian doctrines, including Christology (31)".Dr. Bridger divided his book into five chapters; all of these chapters work together to present three grounds of defense for Bridger’s thesis (31). First, an exegetical argument based on Acts 17 (chapter two). Second, historical and textual arguments based on representative examples of positive use of qur’anic points of contact selected from two medieval and two contemporary Arabic Christian texts (chapter three and four) (41). Third, a theological argument based n the dialogical method of contextualization (chapter five).Dr. Bridger was very academic and fair in his representation of both camps (the ones that support using the Qur'an and others who are against it), and he presented some great historical and textual evidences that showed how early Arab Christians used the Qur'an in their witness.As you read this book you can clearly see the deep understanding that Dr. Bridger has for the Arabic culture, history and challenges, adding to that a clear understanding of the Arabic language.One of the things I enjoyed as I was reading the book is "The Guidelines For Using the Qur'an and point of contact" (61). I found it really important to emphasis those guidelines before even considering using the Qur'an or any other sacred text.I disagree with Dr. Bridger in a part of chapter four. Dr. Bridger refers to a book called The True Meaning of the Gospel and Acts (can be found on Amazon) as an example of Christian Exegesis and Apologetics use of the Qur'an in contemporary Arabic texts (105) . Unfortunately, this book was written by muslim "scholars" not to communicate the real gospel of Christ, but to criticizes the Christian faith. Actually, in the first 6 pages of that book (the true meaning...) the authors indicate that the Bible that Christians have is not the real Injeel of Christ, and that the real Injeel was corrupted. This book (the true meaning...) is neither a commentary nor a translation of the Bible, it's an alteration of the real Bible. The two points that I disagree with Dr. Bridger in are: First, I don't agree in putting Dr. Maluhi's book in the same category as "the true meaning..."; because Dr. Maluhi's book is a fair contextualization of the Injeel without altering the main doctrines of the orthodox Christian faith. While "the true meaning...) assumes that the Bible is corrupted, and based on this assumption the authors changed important phrases with others that serve their goals (i.e. the author changed the Son of God to the beloved of God!). The second thing I disagree with Dr. Bridger in, is the idea that the "true meaning.." is a good representation of using the Qur'an to reach out to Muslims, I think it's an "over-textualization" to the level that it preaches "another gospel".I have met many missionaries that use this book (the true meaning...) to reach out to Muslims in the Arab world, especially in the Arab Peninsula, but what I also found that non of them actually took the time to read the book (mainly because it's only available in Arabic), and non of them knew that this book attacks the Christian faith and the inerrancy of the Bible. Saying that, I am not saying that this is the case with Dr. Bridger, on the contrary, I think Dr. Bridger studied the book carefully before he wrote his book.My disagreement with Dr. Bridger in using this text (the true meaning....) does not decrease the value of his work whatsoever. This is just my personal opinion only.As an Arab Christian, I believe that using the Qur'an in witnessing to Muslim is such an effective tool, that helps communicating the Gospel is a familiar phrases and concepts, as long as we don't use the qur'anic text out of its context. For most Arab Christian, the issue of whether we can use the Qur'an in our witness to Muslim or not, has already been settled long time ago. But because this is still an issue in the West, I do see the need for books like Dr. Bridger's.One of my favorite passages of this book is found in page 63 "Christians must guard against reducing their presentations of the gospel to a mere attestation of belief in core doctrines like the Trinity and Incarnation. Abstracting these doctrines from the Bible's narrative reduces the Christian faith to a list of proposition that can appear detached from God's redemptive activity in the whole of creation and throughout history. Christians must make sure that they tie any explanation of these doctrines to how they are revealed, developed, and explicated in the whole of the canon and thought the course of redemptive history. in other words, they must employ scriptural reasoning and not mere rational argumentation"In the back of the book, Dr. Bridger's bio states that he is the Director of the Jenkins Center for the Christian Understanding of Islam in the Souther Baptist Theological Seminary, and that's true for the time that the book was published in. But now Dr. Bridger is back in The Criswell College in Dallas, Texas. I thought some people may want to know that.I am thankful for such a book, and I really enjoyed reading it.Dr. Rami HalasehMay 17th, 2015

About the Author Margaret Carlisle Cupit is a summa cum laude graduate of Rhodes College. Maggie faces her loss of control head-on allowing readers to join her journey of healing and faith. Maggie journals through the gritty experiences of cancer and describes in detail good days and bad. Her grandfather writes philosophical insights alongside her experiences. The insights engage the intellect while the raw experiences capture the heart. Both Maggie and her grandfather humbly focus on the loving nature of God. They don't push an agenda or attempt to have all the answers. Maggie writes about what she sees and feels. The grandfather writes about what is unseen; the hidden kingdom of God as Maggie experiences both hardship and love.I am a mom of a childhood cancer fighter. I would recommend this book to anyone who has engaged in cancer combat. Or to anyone wondering what the cancer battlefield is all about. I identify with Maggie's conclusions that the losses are great but love reigns victoriously in the fight.

My fear is that this leads to being "spiritual but not religious" at best, and hopeless and cynical at worst By AJ Heine As a priest in the 21st century, I am grateful for this faithful, honest, and thought-provoking book that Ed and Maggie have given us. I see a huge generation of young adults who have a lot of information, yet struggle to synthesize it into wisdom. My fear is that this leads to being "spiritual but not religious" at best, and hopeless and cynical at worst. During times of suffering and doubt, faithful people need wise words and patient conversation. Unfortunately, often times the loudest voices in Christianity serve to drive these authentic seekers further away with trite answers and disregard for deeper questions. The authors provide us with a refreshingly honest and faithful alternative. I am grateful for this resource, because it gives voice to the possibility and appropriateness of faith seeking answers--seeking them honestly, courageously, and joyfully. It is important work. And I'm thrilled to have a new tool to help me do it.

A book for everyone on the journey By Nancy Jo Poirrier One’s journey toward the deeper truths is often hidden from the young by their activity and search for identity and career.Maggie Cupit has taken us on her travels from a typical young college student toward this deeper journey, through a very dark time in her young life where she was diagnosed with cancer and simultaneously developed questions about God.Her journey involves a dialogue with her grandfather, a philosophy professor, through an exchange of letters. This is the format of their thought provoking book. The questions about God are universal, not just about a battle with cancer. The answers given by Maggie and her grandfather are uplifting for everyone and most definitely worth reading.

By Rebbeca arsenault What a wonderful tool for any leader with the desire to accomplish success! We all have flaws, it is how we overcome them that matters, holding ourselves accountable. I love how Pastor Godbee used heroes from the Bible as examples, great men of God, yet flawed, and you can place a sure bet that what you read and learn from this author, Pastor, and man, is full of wisdom and truth. The mix of scripture within these pages sends it over the edge in to excellence. I highly recommend this read to everyone not just leaders, and I guarantee it will be a blessing to your life and others'.

I wish that I had had this book or any of Steve Sampson's other books when I first was seeking to know God. He teaches in such a clear, anointed way what no other minister, Christian, or church has communicated to me in many years of searching to find out HOW to hear and know the Lord. It's the difference between being told to follow principles and guidelines and being told how to have real communion with the Lord. Steve Sampson's books brought me very much into the latter. I wish that every Christian had this book, it is that life changing.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Finished the book, and God woke me up twice that night By Truth Triumphs This is the truth. I had first heard from God 2 nights after my 22nd anniversary when God woke me up at 1 am and told me to go check my husband's phone. I did, dialed the last number, and my best friend at church answered with "hey honey, how ya doing?". My husband was a deacon in the church and I went to wake him up and discover that he had been in adultery with her (being intimate and unprotected with both of us) for 2.5 years. God used this to bring me to my own repentance and discovering that I had been a false conversion and church lady for 32 years. I surrendered to Jesus and asked Him to take my life which He did and I was born again. Shortly thereafter, I read this book. The night that I finished it God woke me up at 2:22 am (see 2 and 22 like my second sentence) and said "things God hates". I had not followed Steve's directions to have a piece of paper next to the bed, so I got up, and wrote it down in the dark down the hall. Surprisingly, then at 3:33, God woke me up again and said "God permeates the Christian". I had to get up again and go write it down. The next day I told my twin daughters what God had said, and I spent time in the Scriptures to see what God hated and how He permeated. Some of the things He hates: sin, the list in Proverbs 6 and divorce. The word "permeated" was only in the Message translation. My daughters came home from school (Christian school) amazed and laughing because that day the school had assigned them a new parking sticker for their car--333. Yes, for a year I saw their car with the message "God permeates the Christian" on the back of their car. Also, I will point out that the number 3 is of course important in the Bible and 333 would be like holy, holy, holy. Also the number 22 is important in the Bible such as Genesis 22, Galatians 5:22, Romans 6:22, Revelation 22 being the last chapter in the Bible, 2 Samueal 22 and so on. God speaks to His sheep. In fact, He is speaking all the time, but we must be listening. This book is one that I give away often because it is clear and understandable and speaks the truth!! Matthew 7:21-23 says that it doesn't matter if you call Him "Lord, Lord", only those who obey the will of the Father and KNOW Jesus personally get in. Hearing the voice of God is key to knowing His will and being in a personal relationship. Bless you and listen.

The writing speaks to believers in Jesus Christ at every level. There is at times more power in one sentence of this book than in whole series on the so-called Christian life. This is the real deal. You do what the author advises and you will begin to confidently recognize and hear the voice of God and you will be able to help others do the same. It is probably one of my top five Christian books.

Charles Erlandson One of the most important issues facing the Church today is how to engage with the culture and to bring it the saving message of the gospel - without becoming like the culture. This issue has special relevance with regards to the digital communications that seem to govern and rule our lives.I can't think of a person better qualified to address the place of the Christian in the midst of this digital explosion than Tim Challies. Challies is both a solid Christian with a Reformed background, as well as someone who is intimately familiar with the effects of the digital world on the lives of Christians. Challies is not only a web designer but also a very popular Christian blogger and book reviewer.This past year, I've read a large number of books dealing with exactly the issue of how Christians should engage the digital world all around us: "The Next Story" is to date the best book I've read on the issue. There are a number of reasons for this. First, Challies ties what he says back to a theological foundation for what he writes. He brings a distinctly Christian perspective that avoids the extremes of jumping on the digital bandwagon or of being afraid to use the new technologies. Instead, he advocates what he calls "disciplined discernment," a trait that he himself manifests throughout the entire book. Second, Challies deals with a large number of relevant issues. While he provides something of a theological basis for what he says, he also writes about the particular issues that are most relevant to the digital world. In this way, "The Next Story" bridges the gap between theory and practice, between theology and real life. Third, Challies has provided what I think is the best overall discussion of the impact of the various digital technologies on our lives and souls - as well as the best discussion of some of the things that we as Christians must practice if we are not be to distracted and led astray by this omnipresent digital world. Throughout "The Next Story," Challies has read and interacted with the best thinkers in the area of media and its influence in our lives.Let me be more specific about a few of the issues with which "The Next Story" deals. While the book is a little slow in the beginning, Challies really hits his stride in Part 2 of the book when he shows us how to put the theory into practice. In Chapter 4 on Communication, Challies hits the nail on the proverbial head when he dissects some of the ways in which digital communication can become idolatrous: we have fashioned idols of productivity, significance, and a desire for information.Chapter 5 is even better, when Challies discusses the nature of the mediated world we live in. He sustains an important discussion of the way that digital technologies are disembodying us or "disincarnating" us. One all too real example is the notion of how in the digital world identity is fluid and something we create for ourselves. We take "avatars" for ourselves, and multiple ones at that. We begin to think of ourselves as something apart from our bodies and as beings we can re-create in any image we desire to. We also pursue "networked individualism," based not on a real community but only on the basis of similar, ephemeral shared interests.Chapter 6 deals with Distraction, a topic I'm keenly aware of as a father of five children and as a high school teacher. Distraction, Challies argues, leads to shallow thinking, which in turn leads to shallow living. And the truth is that we are all more distracted by our digital technologies than we recognize. Even multi-tasking turns out to be highly overrated as a strategy for dealing with our communication overload.One of my favorite chapters is Chapter 8, on Truth and Authority. Challies' reflection on the "authority" that Wikipedia has developed for itself is worth the price of the book all by itself. Isn't it a little scary that the number one page that shows up on Google for almost any search is Wikipedia, an encyclopedia which has only relatively poor oversight and which has been known to have inaccuracies? What happens when authority is based on popularity, rather than expertise, tradition, or revelation?Make sure you read the Epilogue, in which Challies reveals to us some of the ways in which he personally has learned to combat the challenges of the digital world. In so doing, he begins to teach us some of the spiritual disciplines we will all need to undertake if we don't want the digital technologies to distract us from Christ. We all know it; we see it (or not), experience it, live with it, use it, and are surrounded by it all the time. From cars to cell phones to shopping to reading, 'the digital explosion' is as good a phrase as any to characterize our time. However, there are many important questions to ask in the face of this explosion. Questions like: How has life and faith been changed by these technologies? How does out constant connected-ness affect us? And what does it mean that we are under surveillance most of our lives? These, and more, are the questions Challies addresses in this book as he seeks to help the reader know how to think about technology as a Christian.Challies first spends three chapters examining how we have arrived at this place of digital explosion. He then lays out three principles to keep in mind while evaluating technology. 1. It is a good, God-given gift. 2. It is under the curse, just like everything else. 3. "It is the human application of technology that helps us determine if it is being used to honor God or further human sin." With these in mind, Challies explores 5 major issues: speaking the truth in love (communication), mediation and identity, distraction, information, truth and authority, and, lastly, visibility and privacy.Next is a book which contains some great insights; it is an important addition to Christian literature. There is a great need for teaching and good material on how to think about technology rather than what to think about technology. There are simply too many new things coming at us to fast for us to rely on other people to determine for us what we ought to think and how we ought to react to each new item. This is, above all else, the great strength of Next: That it seeks to aid the reader in just this way, despite only succeeding at times.Challies words were particularly penetrating as he spoke, in various places throughout the book, about how technology or information can easily become idols in our lives. Of all the problems of technology this age-old issue is the worst; it is a must-have discussion in most of our churches.Unfortunately, Challies has also written a very inconsistent and, at times, shallow book. He does not keep to his own definition of technology, nor the list of three points he makes about technology (which I noted above). At times he speaks as if it is the application which makes a technology good or bad, and at times he does not. Frankly, I find point number 3 to be naive at best; the instrumentalist approach to technology is widely and, in my opinion, rightly rejected. The fact that we can use technology for good or ill is an obvious, and overstated, truth. The deeper truth is that technologies affect us in ways independent of how we use them. Challies bounces around the instrumentalist approach, affirming it here and denying it there. He notes that technology is a good gift of God but several times writes as if it were merely a necessary evil. Which is it? Further, his thoughts on mediated vs. unmediated communication are a muddle at best; skip that chapter.Overall, the best chapters in this book were on distraction and information. This is where Challies theological insight is keenest and where he focuses on idolatry and how technology, in general, is affecting us. The rest of his book was both philosophically and theologically weak. Yes, technology is under the curse, but what do we do with that? Challies never says. His conclusion is that we just need to think better about technology. While this is certainly true it is not enough. In many cases, technology itself inhibits better and deeper thinking. I would put a much stronger emphasis on digital fasting than Challies did, as well as on several other time honored practices of the Christian faith.Conclusion: 3.5 Stars. Conditionally Recommended. This is a good, and needed, book on the intersection of technology and faith. It is worth reading. Be aware, however, that it contains a subtle but extremely negative view of technology and has embedded within it several areas of naivety in regards to what technology is, how it affects us, and how we can or should respond.Thanks to EngagingChurchBlog for the chance to review this book.

Great help in thinking theologically about the massive influx of information By Matt Heerema If you are interested in how a Christian worldview sees the current tsunami-like influx of media technology, this is a book to read.What is wonderful about the book is that it won't tell you what to think about technology, but it strives to help with how to think, theologically, philosophically, and technologically, about different facets of the information tidal wave.Seeking to help us gain a better understanding of the nature of our current technological scene, Tim gives a brief overview history of the progression of technology, offering good insights such as the fact that prior to the nationwide expansion of the railroad, no information in the world travelled faster than a horse. (Though, I'd question the outcome of a race between a horse and carrier pigeon perhaps?). This was followed shortly on by the telegraph, the telephone, the radio, the television, and the Internet. In short, in a short 150 years, the entire nature of information flow has been fundamentally altered.We are not dealing simply with a new tool we need to know how to master, we are dealing with a new reality, requiring new skills, new disciplines, new discernment, and fresh thought. Ironically, if we are to succeed, we must implement these new modes of operation using ancient wisdom. Tim helps bring this to bear.He then goes on with some practical implications of this new reality, again not giving us methods and how-to's, or what-to-think's but rather the more helpful how-to-think-about's. One of my favorite concepts he unpacks is the idea of "mediacy". Most of our communication no longer happens face-to-face, but through a medium (e-mail, text, phone or voice chat, video chat, etc).This medium, by definition acts as a "mediator" (something that stands between), and it has effects on the communication. As I learned in my 101 speech class in college, the medium literally distorts the message, and so requires effort on the part of the communicator and receiver in order to understand properly. Understanding how various media impact your communication will help you apply the correct effort.This book is worth a read.
