What Urban Fantasy Is Supposed to Be By Coach of Alva In New York City, Siobhan Quinn, half-vampire, half-werewolf, falls in love with a beautiful young woman who trades in supernatural artifacts and who has made terrible enemies.Kiernan began this series a few years ago when her contempt for the degeneration of urban fantasy into a subgenre of paranormal romance boiled over. She fired back by creating a series heroine -- anti-heroine, rather -- designed to surprise and repulse admirers of Anita and Rachel and Sookie. Her creation, Siobhan Quinn, was foul-mouthed, cruel, emotionally detached, amoral, uninterested in romance. She told her stories in first person but was proudly semi-literate and mocked the reader by making clear her unreliability as a narrator and her contempt for linear storytelling. It was a good joke but it began to wear thin towards the end of the second volume.Here, in what Kiernan says will be the last in novel in the series, the author does something different and something better. Instead of mocking what other writers have done with the genre, she provides instead an example of what they should have done with it. She brings back the ghouls and the noir she used in "Daughter of Hounds" and mixes them with a story line that she used in two of her best Martian stories, "Bradbury Weather" and "Slouching towards the House of Glass Coffins," i.e., a heroine on a doomed quest to save her beloved. More importantly, she dumps Quinn's bad writer pose and replaces it with some of the best descriptive writing she has done in a novel in ages. Everything she writes about the ghoul dens, in particular, is classic, horrific, unforgettable.And will she really stop writing Quinn novels now that she has learned to do them well? Probably, for she usually means what she says. I hope she changes her mind.

She’s walked away from her old life and is shacked up with a woman who is a CPA by day/sub by night. She meets Selwyn Throckmorton at a BDSM club and is immediately enamored. For a woman who has always been emotionally distant and truly indifferent to romance, always looking for a quick screw not cuddle-time, she’s unwound. Quinn will follow her ladylove into hell and that just may be what it takes to save them both. CHERRY BOMB is the best of the three Quinn books by far, still snarky and breaking the fourth wall, but with an edge so razor sharp every word cuts at your soul. CHERRY BOMB breaks the mold of what paranormal & urban fantasy is today and is viciously memorable. I’ll miss Quinn…

Twisted enough it might make you squirm By Pabkins Twisted enough it might make you squirmYeah in case you didn’t know already from having read the previous two books, Cherry Bomb is a dark, twisted and sometimes sick comedy filled with cussing, blood, gore, death and disturbing sex which I don’t know if I should laugh sickly at or be grossed out by. Hardy har har lol. Maybe both. Maybe I’m more sick and twisted then I thought since I still get a kick out of these novels otherwise I wouldn’t have continued reading them. This one however was even darker and twisted then the previous two. But it all comes to an end with Cherry Bomb as the author noted at the end of the novel that this would be her last Siobhan Quinn novel.That instant attraction will always bite you in the ass in the endIt’s years after the events of Red Delicious and Quinn is now in New York and has settled into a comfortable albeit boring living arrangement with a woman that likes to play in the BDSM scene and she provides Quinn with a place to live as well as the occasional meal in exchange for Quinn playing her dominant and sometimes giving her sips of her vampiric blood. All that changes one night at the bar when Quinn meets Selwyn and has an instant attraction.Dealing in the dark and double crossingSelwyn just so happens to be an antiquities dealer and has been dealing in some rather dark items. When Quinn finds this out and that Selwyn has a very upset customer she starts to realize just why Selwyn sought her out at the club. But so much happens to quickly that Quinn is soon in for a penny, in for a pound so to speak and can’t or won’t walk away now. Things between these two are strange – but then things with Quinn are always strange. I am being very serious when I say that everything about this installment was much more unnerving for me then the previous two novels. I really don’t think I was prepared for it. I still recommend it if you read the other two – you might as well finish off and read this one. However, there really wasn’t an “ending” like I would have expected from a trilogy or urban fantasy series final book. But it wasn’t really not an ending either. Its hard to explain but I’m sure already fans will definitely still enjoy.

Eoghan Schwope This is required reading for a class I registered for in Religious Studies. I already read the book before the semester began and I think that had I discovered the book on my own would have found it interesting. As described it is written from a feminist perspective so it mostly kvetches about the fact that throughout history women's points of view and contributions to history in various religious cultures are largely absent. I did have to do some follow up reading on various points made in some of the chapters where assertions were made or not fully fleshed out. I really hoped to glean more about the roles women have in religious traditions -- read: gender roles -- as the title misleads one to believe the book tell. The book's organization is also poorly executed, going from oldest religion to newest religion. It would have been better to organize it based on the relationships of the cultures, rather than on their chronology of existence. For example, Chapter 1 is Hinduism, Chapter 2 is Judaism, then much later in the book Buddhism is discussed and later still Sikhism. And actually that is how I read the book. It didn't make sense to me to read it in the order it was published.

I can honestly say this is indeed a fresh and original story, and very timely! The imagery and the use of a small boy as the voices of the pertinent personnel involved in the War on Terror is pitch-perfect, it is a most unlikely page turner. He gets to the point at the beginning, explosive situation after explosive situation; both intellectually and through perfect use of language.The interrogator of the boy begins to see himself as one of those responsible for the carnage and corruption enmeshed in this dark time in U.S. history. A great story teller educates and informs as well as entertains. Mr. Doten has done that!

Original and Haunting By Alohanaut The writing is so fine, this novel pulled me right in, delivering an original, horrifying, sometimes hilarious and ultimately lyrical reading experience. The deft tonal shifts reminded me of early David Lynch--a head bobbing between satire and horror--but here those shifts recalled what I remember feeling during what seemed like an explosion of national psychosis post 9/11.At one point, the book's Mark Doten character says: "The natural order one year--what we thought was the natural order--is overturned, the next it's proved just one out of many possible arrangements."A mad assemblage of obsessive characters, most named after familiar 'dramatis personae' from the war on terror--characters crippled by blindspots and narcissism--stitch together narratives and meta-narratives in the face of this dislocating truth. (Where is "the reality based community" when you really need it?) As told in The Infernal, their story is a literary Frankenstein monster. It lives. It's horrible and beautiful.Their voices also channel our collective gasp in the face of this real horror--terror, and our shambolic answer to it. We observe ourselves responding to all of the absurdity, denatured bigotry, cruelty and madness the book so fertilely imagines. It's something we do these days, in the privacy of our own homes, on television, in video games, or visiting the grand theater of barking insanity known as cable news.In a great review in The Millions, Adam Petty notes that:"In The Inferno, Dante Alighieri placed all his enemies from 14th-century Florence in Hell, where they gave accounts of their sins while suffering elaborate, ironic punishments. Doten wants to place these historical figures in his fiction where they will be forced to explain themselves, as this is unlikely to happen in the real world."This seemed pretty accurate to me. But the design of the book pushes the point back at us as well. We're creating The Inferno that we're all trapped in. If the results are obscene, well, they're our doing. Are we having fun yet?

Masterful By Long Division Twisted and timely, The Infernal showcases Doten's masterful use of voice (there are dozens of them here) and his deft, lyrical sentences. This book is as entertaining as it is important--a striking debut from an author with a long, brilliant career ahead of him.

It is difficult to find good, clean adventure books for young boys, and I highly recommend "the Long Ride Home" by Mr. Michael Staires.The reader is captivated from the first page as we meet the cowboy sitting by the crackling campfire out under the stars with only his horse to talk to. The intrigue continues to draw us in as we are introduced to young Billy Christian who lives with his grandpa out on the farm. When the lone rider comes riding up to the farm, the adventure is only beginning.Not only is this book an adventure, it is a thought-provoking story with excellent life lessons woven throughout. Whether read alone, or read aloud together, this is a wonderful book and I am excited for more adventures from the Billy Christian series.Pam Agee

I have had the privilege of participating in many journeys that he has led outdoors in the Osage Hills of Oklahoma. When hearing him share a story, I often feel like I can picture the adventure. Your imagination will be activated as you read of Billy and Son Christian and the saga of the horse, Spirit. I can not wait until the next book comes out! This is a great read that is very hard to put down. Michael Staires is a phenomenal writer that tells a story inside of a story! He is one of the best story tellers I have ever met and he has put his greatest work into this book.

I was completely engrossed by the stories the spirits shared. I think that's due not only to their compelling messages/stories, but especially because of the early chapters in which the author explains her processes of tuning in and listening to those who have passed to the "other side." I have a new-found appreciation for and understanding of the ways in which people with intuitive gifts do their work. For that reason I recommend this book to skeptics as well as "believers" in paranormal/supernatural activity. I'm somewhere in the middle of belief and skepticism: not fully accepting that spirits of people who've passed on would still be making contact, yet acknowledging that I don't know what's possible. Marylee Trettenero has moved me along the spectrum toward belief/acceptance because of her clear, thoughtful explanations of the care she brings to her work, the privilege her gifts have afforded her (in terms of learning from spirits), and the complete lack of self-aggrandizement and "cheesiness" in her explanations. I found her to be a wise, trustworthy guide to intuitive mediumship in general and the particular, very interesting spirits of Charlestown.

We' Still Here makes Charlestown's rich history accessible in an entirely new way. It adds another dimension to our understanding of what took place in this one square mile. A real plus is that the author explains the way in which information was obtained and psychic terminology so that the reader feels like they are in the field working alongside her. I couldn't wait to discover what was in the next chapter!

After having just read Nathaniel Philbrick's Bunker Hill, reading this book was like having the historical characters come to life and tell their true story to the author. I was impressed with the thought and care that was taken in the discovery process. I was most surprised by author's unexpected connection to the past.This book really challenges you stop and think on many levels.

About the Author Marion G. “Bud” Fray is an inspiring man of God. A Missouri native, he now calls Tennessee home. He and Jane have been married 65 years and are proud parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents.Kim P. Davis, an Atlanta native, is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a bachelor of arts in journalism. Her experience with newspapers and covering stories on the missions field have contributed to her adventurous life. A former missionary with husband, D. By saram This is a wonderful story about a friend who spent many years in Africa spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. He has inspirational stories of God's guidance and protection, and heartwarming responses from the people he and his wife ministered to. It was a very interesting story to me as I remember the Frays from Arkansas many years ago.

It is simultaneously a missionary adventure, set in Africa, and a tale of spiritual growth. What I loved the most was the author's transparency about the journey. It's obvious that Dr. Fray and his wife, Jane, didn't already know everything when they set foot in Zimbabwe for the first time, but they made themselves available, and Jesus both taught and cared for them. Beautiful and informative!

"Both Feet In" By Lora G.Burney "Both Feet In" is an inspiring journey of faith that testifies to the love of our Heavenly Father's heart by blessing his children in Zimbabwe and South Africa with Baba Moyo (father of the heart). The surrendered lives of Bud and Jane Fray speak volumes and teach us well. So very thankful that our Heavenly Father saw fit to bring Baba Moyo and his faithful, loving wife of 65 years to his children in Crossville, TN. What a blessing to know "wholeness is not a prerequisite for worship of God, but worship is a prerequisite for wholeness." Thank you BOTH for teaching us to be "both feet-in followers."

It has a lot of the notes from the larger ESV Study Bible edition, but also has a few features geared toward students that I really like. For anyone who finds themselves trying to see how the big story of the Bible fits together, trying to make sense of who is who, or wrestling with some of the complicated sayings in the Bible, this resource is a must!

ESV is a wonderful translation and the commentary, references and notations make this a very functional Bible. As a Lutheran Christian I was also greatly encouraged by the fact that, while not "Lutheran" the study notes are quite faithful to our theological perspective, which is almost unheard of in a study Bible. It is appropriate for Jr. High and high school aged children. I commend it to you.

Serendipity, I Think Not By woody carter Two books published this year – Phil DeCardo’s biography, The Saintly Life of Luther McKinnie: A Great African-American Devotee of Paramahansa Yogananda and my novel, Narada’s Children: A Visionary Tale of Two Cities [also on Amazon.com], honor the life of a relatively unknown man, Luther McKinnie, who passed away at the age of 94 years old in 2002. While DeCardo’s biographical portrait is of a man who came from humble beginnings to follow in the footsteps of his beloved guru, Yogananda, and become a mystic, my fictional work bases the life of a central character on the person - Luther McKinnie. Little did I realize when writing that both the “real” Luther that DeCardo describes and the character of my protagonist have much in common.It needs to be acknowledged that while I met Phil at one of Self-Realization Fellowship’s [the organization founded by Paramahansa Yogananda in 1920] World Convocations in Los Angeles in the late 1970s, neither DeCardo nor I have been in touch with one another for well over 40 years. In fact, neither one of us had an inkling that the other was writing for publication nor reflecting on Luther’s life.Phil’s work is especially noteworthy, because Luther was a private person who rarely talked about himself; however, the author describes a very personal relationship he had with him for over 30 years, and shares with us the stories that Luther told him and personal experiences he witnessed throughout their long friendship.Certainly, when I first met Luther while both of us oth lived in New York City, I was too pre-occupied with mental afflictions to recognize the qualities of the man who sat with me and who invited me to the SRF Center. I had recently returned to New York City after living in a relatively small town on the edges of the Ogaden Dessert, in eastern Ethiopia, for two years. Upon my return to the City, I rented a small apartment in Harlem; often walked alone on the streets at night and mentally thought I was going off the deep end.A mutual friend referred me to Luther who at the time lived in a one-bedroom apartment in upper Manhattan. I’d knock on his door talking a mile-a-minute, non-stop. Without directly responding to my madness, Luther would usher me into his sitting room where two straight chairs sat and would gently say, “Woody, come sit down…come sit down,” and gesture towards a chair. “Meditate with me.” I’d eventually close my eyes and together we’d sit in silence for a while until Luther recited a prayer, and begin to play his harmonium [an acoustical keyboard instrument] and chant. It was the weirdest…dare say, oddest experience at first but each time I left his apartment after sitting with him for, perhaps, an hour or more I’d be cooled out; like a wrinkled shirt that had been well ironed.DeCardo writes, “Although Luther was born into a poor farming family, he left this world…a saint – a man of wisdom, love, and abiding joy. Against incredible odds, he overcame the limitations of poverty, racial prejudice, and the weakness of human nature to achieve a blissful soul knowledge that many aspire to but few have attained.” Phil’s book is well written and truly fascinating. Soloway Up front, I must say that my granddaughter ordered this and decided she wanted another one instead, so I kept it for myself even though it is a more modern version than I have used. It is very pretty, well bound, and is soft and feels good in hand, but the illustrations are not religious but are of branches and leaves that mimic the cover. It does not look very "Holy". Quality is very nice, and I would have rated higher if I were a teen or it were written in a more traditional style and looked more like a Bible than a teen journal.

About the Author Vladimir Nikolaevich Megre (born 23 July, 1950 in Kuznichi village, Gorodnyansky District, Chernigov Region in Ukraine), the author of The Ringing Cedars of Russia book series, was a well-known entrepreneur. He spent most of his childhood with his grandmother Efrosinia Verkhusha, a village healer. As a teenager Vladimir occasionally visited Father Feodorit, a priest of the Trinity-Sergiyev Monastery. Later he was shown there the picture «The One and Only» which he described in his second book before the picture was revealed to the world. Vladimir started an independent life early and left the parents' house at the age of 16. Since 1974 he lived in Novosibirsk and worked as a photographer with Novosibirskoblfoto, a service company. At the beginning of Perestroika (reforms of the late 1980s) he was the president of the Inter-Regional Association of Siberian Entrepreneurs. In 1994-5 he organized two large-scale trade expeditions with a fleet of river steamers along the River Ob along the route Novosibirsk -- Salekhard -- Novosibirsk at his own expense. On this trip, an encounter with Anastasia in the Siberian taiga changed his entire life. It had been a secret for a long time for relatives and friends what made him, an entrepreneur with ten years experience, to pledge his property and spend his savings on unprofitable trading trips. The mystery was revealed in his books with Anastasia as the main character. Vladimir Megre brought something really invaluable from the trips. Throughout 1996-2006 nine books were written by Vladimir Megre (The Ringing Cedars of Russia Series: Anastasia, The Ringing Cedars of Russia, The Space of Love, Co-Creation, Who Are We?, Book of Kin, The Energy of Life, The New Civilization, Rites of Love). In 2011 the author became Laureate of Gusi Peace Prize.

I have read it more than once, in fact I've been reading and re-reading the series. Still, I haven't made up my mind about the series, it contains lots of food for worthwhile thought and I think, 5 stars.The reason I bought the ebook was the Whispercast feature. I am disappointed that it is not as advertised... a free addition. I have not been able to access this audio feature.

Really people, start with the first volume and read them all. Then...read them all again! Doing so will change your life and the world around you! If this were a required reading in grade schools, the impact would transform the entire planet within a generation!

What a nice surprise it was for me to find that Adam has done this devotional on it. Not only is it a devotional but the prayers each day are great. After that base is set he goes about demolishing intelligent design in a very concise manner By Rae I really appreciated this book The author begins with an example of a very cut and dry argument that anyone can understand and agree with the outcome of. He then assures the reader that he will be staying within the guidelines of a proper debate and even sets forth rules that he will follow. After that base is set he goes about demolishing intelligent design in a very concise manner. I found myself chuckling at moments because the argument is so sound that you would have to outright ignore facts in an effort to not agree. This was my first book by the Author Casper Rigsby but because of it I have decided to purchase his others!

That said, the argument itself was not explored as thoroughly as it might have been.
